    A musician friend recommended this trio's video to me six years ago. I'm not an Adele fan, so was begrudgingly putting off watching it. But Dewey has excellent taste in music, so when I relented to my hesitation and finally watched it...I was absolutely slack-jawed at their sheer innovative approach & stellar musicianship on this banal Adele cover. Ever since that moment, I have been amazed & delighted at Dirty Loops 'Loopifying' covers and totally absorbing their originals. It was the beginning of my trip down the rabbit hole that is Dirty Loops. I simply never tire of listening and watching these guys, and I hope they never stop making music--and that you never stop reacting to it! Thanks again, Jeff. ❤‍🔥

    I love songs like this that sound really neat the first time you hear them but then on repeat you discover sooooo many candies (as Jonah calls them)…love the Baby Loops as much as the more mature Dirty Loops!

    Haha, yeah, they renamed all (or at least most) of the covers to silly alternate names in the drum and bass books. It's quite fun to try and figure them out. :)
    And as far as I've understood it over the years, "loopifying" is a term they jokingly use to say that they're doing their special thing to a melody, no matter if they're written the melody themselves or it's someone else's song. So it doesn't necessarily mean doing one specific thing, but rather that they're putting their own spin on it. You're right about it being them using everything they've ever listened to or played over the years (at least that's what they're saying themselves in interviews), and it's kind of an eclectic mix of stuff, what with Jonah having played and listended to a lot of classical music (and also, quite obviously, singers like Stevie Wonder), Henrik listing Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tribal Tech as big influences, and Aron having Toto and Pat Metheny as some of his favourites.
    I've heard them describe their own music as "extra everything on steroids". :D

    • @fiddlestix3025
      @fiddlestix3025 2 роки тому +1

      Henrik once described it as “taking a song, making a kind of cover of it, and then messing with it” ;) and yeah, this could include all of the above (and is a huge understatement :D )
      Jonah also somewhere talks about a particular Dirty Loops synth sound, as I understand.
      And to watch the development of this band and each one of their members is super interesting! Shame that the C bug has thrown such a huge spanner into their works, -absolutely abysmal…..

    I think you made a very good point here: What they bring to the table and what they keep. It’s just like a baby beginning to talk - they have all the sounds from start, and they select which ones to keep, which results in a language or dialect or accent after a while. Just as DL does. But there’s more - the Loopifying, as I hear it, is like they go through all those decisions for every song, over and over again. They don’t just pick a style and therefrom keep the same recipe for everything they coop with. They are going all into what suits each song best in every arrangement they write.

      You are 100 percent correct! Even Jonah was telling me that he feels he needs to keep pushing himself with his parts and keyboard sounds. What a task he has made for himself...but he always manages to do it.

    Definitely agree with you! You can definitely hear the stuff they preserved and still keep bringing into their "Loopified" covers. This one is especially reminiscent of "Hit Me" (funnily, the first track in their album titled "Loopified"). You can absolutely tell they recycled (nothing bad about it) some musical ideas from this track for that one!

    Agree that they were still in development. Can't believe I heard this a few years before you did. How they riffed this up is interesting...experimental chordal changes and showing their technical prowess yet still showing their "Loopified" adolescence and growth from back then. Happily for all of us, they were almost fully "Loopified" a couple years later on that album of the same name...LoL.

    This is more or less pure Jazz (which I really like) + the loopifying cherries on top from The 3 Magicians. As you mentioned Jeff, the "early works" have their own charm and you can see the development from there nicely.

    • @StrateleStudios
      @StrateleStudios  2 роки тому +1

      @@StrateleStudios Good question Jeff, I actually happened to think about this today.
      If we only focus on pure DL material I guess it´s still "Work Shit Out" from their latest album "Phoenix" because it contains everything I could wish for - incredible performance and a good balance between the flashy stuff and that wonderful lyrical solo by Jonah + the obvious FUN they had doing it ;-)
      From Loopified" it would be "Roller Coaster" because of the BASS there and the funky tight playing/singing or "Circus" because it´s the more rounded composition overall... choices.
      What would be your pick, my friend?

    I've always enjoyed this chart, but I agree, it's clear that this was early in their career. There are early elements of "loopification" but it seems more constrained. They stuck very close to the original without taking many chances. They have clearly evolved from that point and now give themselves artistic license to take an idea and run with it (think of the bridge in Thriller). Still amazing musicianship no matter the chart.

    • @benarmentano3799

      Once thing I noticed was the piano under the verses. It was bouncier and different from what I hear Jonah doing in later songs. He started using more pads and other things to filling up the space underneath his vocals more.

    Like the fellow Swede, mr Yngwie Malmsteen said, " what do you mean less is more??! no, More is more!".
    Man, Jonah auditioned for the Swedish Idol show and it went good, but right now finding his Idol footage is hard. Turned out to be one of the best musicians of the era. All that "oh boo hoo nobody does any good music anymore, they can't play, blah blah..." How about you listen to ANY song by these guys and shut your focking face.
    I really liked the covers, but their originals are just as good and insane. Composers, producers, musicians, and people who don't play but they're into this sort of acrobatic stuff...
    "Show off pop fusion", "The sort of shit that give good pro musicians anxiety", "Is this even real??" Those are my attempts at putting a genre to whatever witchcraft these mo'fockas are doing. They are so fucking good at the craft alone, ANY instrument maker wants them to use their stuff.

    Loopified or not, this shows, more than anything, they were killing it from the start! Have you ever reacted to Jonah and Jacob Collier‘s session at the Montreux Jazz Festival? If not, I’m pretty sure this will blow you away. Jacob’s music is often too esoteric for the masses but his genius is undeniable! He is listed as one of the artists who collaborated on Jonah’s solo Album along with other brilliant artists such as Anomolie, Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) and the 14 y/o phenom, Justin Lee Schultz, all three of whom are featured on Jonah’s version of Bad, another absolutely must see UA-cam video. I realize just how addicted I am to the Loops every day as I notice that very little other music is as satisfying and I find myself blasting their (I don’t think I’ll ever tire of) masterpieces through my reference monitors! I love that you’re as addicted as me 🤭.
