    To all of you who attended the Premiere THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of your generosity!!! Love you guys! When Jonah and I were chatting about how they did their videos I sent him a screenshot of the poll (ua-cam.com/users/StrateleStudioscommunity) and this was his response....
    Jeff: "Looks like people wanna be "Rickrolled" by Dirty Loops 😆"
    Jonah: "Hahahahaha! Well this could happen! 😆 that's hilarious! I wonder what we would do with that song, hmmm"
    Jeff: "You would be legendary if you did it! Wonder? Just do what you always do...make it 10 times better😆

    This was the first song that I heard from Dirty Loops. It came up as a recomendation from UA-cam.
    I Love the original Alphaville version so I gave it a try.
    I could not stop repeating the song.
    Att first it was the drumming. Soo tight and in the pocket. I had a hard time to believe, it was possible to play that tight. Short after that discovery they released "Work shit out" and I was sold. For real I was crying. It just blew My mind.

    I can't help feeling like they took some cues from The Pat Metheny Group's 'Letter from Home' album: at the beginning, I thought, "this feels a lot like 5-5-7" and at 4:15 I was transported straight to 'Are We There Yet,' with a reprise of the '5-5-7' feel laid on top of the texture of the second half of that chart. My favorite part of this cover is the subtle pedal tone in the chorus. I think the pedal tone is an F#, and the first four notes in the bass line are D, E, F# and G# (sort of outlining D lydian). Meaning that F# is a 3rd against D, a 9th against E, a root/an octave against F#, and as a dominant 7th against G#. I'm not sure G# is the root though, I'm hearing an inversion. But man, those four chords are uplifting! #justmusictheorynerding
    You can hear it better in the synth solo (starting from "that" 4:3 polyrhythmic run), which is killer, by the way... I swear, I'm done nerding out now...
    And I feel you, man. Isn't it great that there's actually music out there that actually makes us feel like that. Dirty Loops is just one of those bands. Jacob Collier made me cry from the first chord of a song ("Butterflies" off Vol. 3)... 2021 is a great year for music.

    • @StrateleStudios
      @StrateleStudios  2 роки тому +3

      Fellow theory geek! hahaha...what do you think about the opening of the song being in G# Phrygian? The bass guitar notes right at the top sound like G# D# F# G#...THEN homeboy starts the next lick with A! I was just playing along improvising in G# Phrygian and it sounded nice...after that I'm not sure without pulling out my headphones. Curious to know what you think! :)

    • @straazz
      @straazz 2 роки тому

      @@StrateleStudios Always love nerding out about these things. ;)
      Interesting point about G# Phrygian though! I'm really a product of growing up in the 80's and 90's listening to mostly hard rock and metal music (thanks dad), in which phrygian is heavily used, no pun intended. So phrygian does fly under the radar sometimes. l have to listen to the opening again, it seems. I'm just a sucker for those super bright sounds.
      And to that end: I figured out the chord progression in Jonahs solo during that 16-th note run. After dissecting the melody line I believe it's D13#11 (there's your lydian), E6-9, F#add9, G#7sus4. It starts out tense with the first chord, then mellows out a bit on the E and F# chords, but that G#7sus4 has a tritone in it between the ... Hold up....
      G# major is.. G# A# *B#* C# D# *E#* F# G#... Think I'll swap the 7 sharps for 5 flats...
      That *Ab7sus4* has a tritone in it between the final note C in the melody and the pedal tone b7. To me it ends up sounding both bright and dark.
      I'll get back to you on the phrygian thing👍

    • @straazz
      @straazz 2 роки тому

      @@StrateleStudios Sadly I was never any good at keyboards. I began as a flutist, believe it or not. Then I taught myself guitar, bass and a smattering of other stuff. It's been years and years since I recorded anything, mostly on account of being a dad.
      The theory stuff is also self taught. I just love figuring stuff out. Why does this chord sound bright or dark? Is this a polyrhythmic or wonky groove? And why does leaning on the 2 and 6 when improvising over a minor7 chord sound "fusion-y" rather than blues-y?
      That's all good fun, but I've always been better at the theory stuff than the actual playing. I mean, on the flute was more than fine, but with the guitar in particular I could never get my left hand dexterity going. So no noodling or lead stuff, no matter how much I practiced. I did get pretty good with a pick, and I can do some Tosin Abasi style "thumping." Think I'll have to get more serious with it again.
      I thought I'd mention what music inspires me these days, because you seem just as thirsty for music that's full of information, so to speak, both technically and emotionally. My absolute favorite guitarist right now is Joshua De La Victoria. He has a few releases to his name, and a UA-cam channel with short snippets of ideas which are fully produced. He delves into pretty advanced stuff without it sounding overly complex or void of emotion. Like metric modulation.
      And you obviosly know of Owane, who's actually an aquaintance of one of my younger brothers (should probably mention I'm Norwegian). And he's made insane strides in his playing over a very short period of time. Like the Crossroad Blues guy...
      Finally, the phenomenon that is Louis Cole, and his band Knower. The music is chord heavy his drumming is insane. He also has a two man side project called Clown Core with himself on drums, Sam Gendel on sax, and the both of them on a smattering of synths and horns. I imagine that started just as a joke, but is still just entertaining. I mean, the last album was recorded in a moving van in Garage band.
      Wow, this was a long one... I'll end on this note: Jonah uploaded a session breakdown of "Bad" on UA-cam. You'll probably want to get on it ;)

    Hi Jeff! I have question to you. Do you think DL use auto tune? You are a musician and a producer. Sometime the high notes sounds artificiell. Maybe I’m wrong but I have read about auto tune and that many artist use it today. Anyway, thank you for your wonderful reactions.

    • @StrateleStudios
      @StrateleStudios  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Thomas, that is a great question! I would say that if Jonah does use auto tune it’s to hasten the recording process and not because he CAN’T sing it “perfectly”. In the old days we’d have to sing something 20 times to get the one take “perfectly” executed but today we have tools that allow us to correct minor issues then go on our way. Can it be abused? You bet it can and you hear it when it is. To get a good sense of how much it is or isn’t used with Jonah take a listen to his live performances. It’s obvious he needs very little help from auto tune.

    The original always annoyed the hell out of me…😂 and now it’s a thing of beauty. Agree on the shuffle 100% and together with the harmonies, bass lines to die for, vocals. It’s too good. I recently discovered this band, so I'm sure there's a lot of DGD fans that would disagree; but I think "strawberry swisher pt 3 (tree city session 2)" is something you would enjoy (the video is of a live set, rather than a conventional music video)
