Hello Painters :) When I started painting many years ago I didn't quite understand value contrast and why it really mattered. Whether you paint in oils, acrylics or mixed media and whether you paint abstract or realistic - understanding the use of value is important. How to see colors and translate at them into value contrast can be a bit tricky but practice makes perfect. Grab your brushes and paint and give it a go. The more you practice seeing and using value contrast the better your paintings will become. At first it might seem a bit strange how you may get better at painting using this technique but it is a method that all the great masters used (including Leonardo da Vinci and Vincent van Gogh) and it is just as important and relevant for artists today. Happy painting :)
I’m glad you mentioned “overworking a painting” That is by far my greatest problem. Knowing when to stop. I’ll do too much and start losing those values, and like you said, have to go back over it again to fix it when I should have just left it alone. Good tip! Thanks!
First off I must say how gorgeous those black/white paintings were...LOVE them!!! I'm trying to finish a painting for my mom and its from a photo of a storm around her home when I was there years ago....I am a bit stuck and think this is one (just one of probably many things) thing I'm messing up. Think I won't look at my photo much anymore to finish, I think I'm too much in my head about it and making it "right", and try to focus on this aspect....we'll see. I've had it set to the side for a while due health stuff but also because of sorta hitting a wall and just not being able to quite see how to fix it.....but as I start to feel better, hopefully soon cuz I'm super sick of not feeling well ;) , but then I'll definitely be working on this to help me finish it :) Thanks so much as always Marie!!! I hope you are doing well!!🥰
Thank you for this most helpful and informative video. I also enjoyed looking at your tonal sketches which, in my opinion, are beautiful interesting images in their own right. Colin. England.
Un très beau travail , très intéressant , le choix du noir et du blanc en nuances donne une atmosphère à la fois douce intimiste et puissante . Félicitations une belle qualité de travail ! Un grand talent 👍🌸☘️🥀💖
I would say it depends on various factors. As a rule of thumb the bigger the value difference there is the more striking the image will be from afar. With less value contrast the image will be calmer and more subdued (a foggy landscape for examble). It will depend on the feeling you want to convey. Usually I would use them in varying amounts and let one of the values dominate.
What a great idea💡to take photograph of my artwork, and create a black and white picture to find the light, medium, and darker values! Great introspect.🌸

Comme toujours, merci beaucoup pour vos réflexions et observations.
Great Tip! How many degrees of value should a balanced painting have?
