As a Master Plumber and HVAC Tech., you gave me a lot of laughs at your naming of the parts and tools ! Thanks for teaching me how to build this, as I never learned that on the job !
Much better than the last video I watched on the same subject. Not only did I hear step-by-step instructions, but there were also comments on what not to do. An, very importantly, this method of construction did not require any expensive tools. It actually makes me want to try it!
First awesome video! Second to all of you suggesting things, unless you have made a better video keep your suggestions to yourself! This is by far one of the most in depth how to videos. If you can’t follow these instructions you shouldn’t be making anything!!! Consider buying one from this guy already made or on Etsy.
Great video!!! I would suggest using pipe tape the snug up the valve instead of the JB Weld just in case you need to take it apart. The stop the switch from wiggling use poster a putty that will stick and won’t dry out. I so appreciate this video. Thank you.
Thank you so much. Best explanation of how to do this. Im in the process of building my lamp right now. "Unless you let it cure. Then it WILL be the end of the world." Hahah. I laughed out loud. Subscribed!
Great way to do it and the actual switch is replaceable if it goes bad. Others are epoxied in place. I prefer my edison bulb bare filament lamps to have a dimmer switch which I usually put in the base. The bare filament hurts my wyes.
Shopping list: - Dimmer / light switch - 1/2 inch water facet (with gate that is going up and down) - 3/4 inch to 1 inch facet - 1 inch T - 3/8 inch OD Surgical tubing - JB KwikWeld - Pipe Wrench Think I got everything =)
That is vinyl tubing, surgical tubing is made of latex and is like a rubber band and you can make slingshot and water weenies out of it. It also breaks down after a year or two whereas the vinyl tubing will still be good decades later.
Thank you for the video, and thanks for actually speaking and explaining what you are doing! I am thinking about adding epoxy through the plastic tube to add extra strength. Let me know what you think if you get a chance. I will let you know if it works.
Epoxy for extra strength is not a bad idea as long as you get the switch really straight with the switch. You won’t want it to harden with a bend because it could make it difficult to rotate the switch. If you do go that route let me know how it works please.
Hi, did you have the chance to work on that wiring video? I'm working on a three bulbs lamp and will use your switch. I found a step-by-step to connect the bulbs, but i don't know how to connect your switch to the rent of the wiring. Thanks for this very easy video!!
If you count your time I’d be hard pressed to say paying $15 wasn’t worth it. With that said I have never tried one of the pre made ones and I wonder about the quality. I believe on average I have spent right around $15 in parts to make one of the switches
I bought the 3/4" gate valve but it will NOT screw into the 1" x 3/4" bushing. It wants to, but just will not grab on. I've tried it with multiple other bushings as well. Any idea? Grind the threads down?
Since the water tap is threaded, does the handle come out and go in? And does that mean I can only turn it so many times one direction before I have to turn it back the other way? Thank you! Great video!
Thank you. The threaded part goes into the plastic tube. The handle will not actually move up or down as you turn it in this case. Since it’s connected to a continuous switch you can keep turning it. I hope this helps
Wire all of the lights in series, or parallel if you wanted to stop all the lights from going out when out burns out. Wire the switch on the hot side of the wires from the power source.
Hey, I have just designed and developed a diy dimmer kit that is designed to fit inside of a 3/4 tee fitting. I can send you everything required to make one if you would do a video on it? It does require soldering.
Hey man thanks a lot for the video, right now I am building my own project and I have a question for you since I am using the same cylinder cage what kind of bulb size and brand are you using? And where can I buy it? Thanks a lot.
Nice. Just a couple suggestions. First, you ought to learn and use the actual names for the plumping parts to be more clear for those who are beginners so they know what to ask for. That's not a water faucet, it's a shut off valve-a gate valve to be specific, and that's a 3/4 by 1 bushing. Secondly, you should never use a pipe wrench on that brass nut to remove the stem. A crescent or standard wrench will prevent marring. And finally, i'd never use the JB Weld-it's unnecessary and will be a nightmare if you ever need to repair/replace the switch. If you feel the parts aren't threaded securely enough (which they should be) use what's used in plumbing-pipe dope, or even some teflon tape.
onitram1 you have not visited you tube that much. You can use either valve. You can also use red or blue lock Tite on the pipe. You can also use hot glue too. You could also double insulate the wires.
Sorry about your toe. Typically I use two large pipe wrench’s and get them apart pretty relatively easily. But I’ll admit some are more difficult then others
Crane Video I'll remember that for the second attempt, super cool trick and now my sister will have a lamp that's cool and can be used in self defense!
where can i get cheap bulk 1/2 inch by 1/8 inch hex bushings? i want to screw a lamp socket nipple that's 1/8 inch into it and attach it to a half inch pipe. they are 5$ each on amazon and i refuse to pay that when i just got 10 iron floor flanges for 12$.
You could just dont get any on the switch itself. I have put it on the switch side in the past but do not do it anymore because it is such a tight fit.
I just made 4 of those idential switches yesterday! I’m shocked to see that you’re using the same method I came up with, and that being using the surgical tubing! BTW, I used Lock Tite. It’s faster and it works well, without having to mix the epoxy.
Crane Video go outside and look at what your garden hose is attached too. That is a hose bib, same thing your washing machine hot and cold attached too. The brass fitting that you took apart is a gate valve because it has a gate stop to shut the water or liquid off and goes up and down.
Not the end of the world, you can just get the bigger three way tee and get reducers to 1/2". its an option. Don't feel bad I have picked up the wrong stuff so many times I have built lamps from them lol.

+Mary Brown Awesome. If you do try it please let me know how it went. So glad you liked it
I used this method a couple of times. It worked really well.
Looks so much easier than drilling and sanding out the valve. Thank you
I’m a huge fan of easier. Thanks

Nice and simple, the KISS Principal. Cheers from Michael. Australia.
Thank you 😊
Great video! Made 2 lamps for my bus.
Hey man that was awesome. I was trying to wrap my head around how to do that and got lost. But you clear that up. Thank you.
So happy you found it helpful
Well done. I like the simplicity of the tubing coupler and your humor!
Thank you
Nice easy to follow video. Thank you. Humor was great!
Good Lord, thank you for the plastic tubing idea for coupling. +1 ingenuity to you, sir.
+Tom Kennish I’m happy you liked it.
This was awesome! I was looking through so many videos for the switch part and this was the easiest to follow. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. I watched it decided to do it my own away(forgot what you did). On my way to menards to get more parts...
Best by far. Thank you
Zac Staylon thank you ☺️
Thanks for the video, I knew there was an easier way to do it.
+andygomez416 so glad you found it helpful.

+Drummers Eve that's awesome that you liked the video. Love the feedback.
Crane Video So you cant use a 3/4? Also, Every valve i looked at was apoxyed and i couldnt get the damn thing apart.
+Drummers Eve I could never get the switch to fit in the 3/4 pipe. I am not sure about the valve being apoxyed I have not run into that issue
Wonderful video! How can I earth/ground the lamp with this switch please, for safety reasons?
Most house-hold lamps do not have a ground. But you could always use a three wire cord and soldier the ground on the inside of the pipe.
Thank you so much for the fast and informative response! As the lamps are metal I thought an earth wire to be safer?
Nice Walkthrough, easy steps to follow. Thanks!
Just made one of your switches works perfect and so much easier then other ones I have looked at . Thanks
+Jason Marshall Thats awesome! Thank you for the feed back.
thank you sir. yours was the first faucet switch that went step by step. very helpful
Very helpful video! Thanks!
Awesome. thanks for the video. Have been looking for this for quite a while now. Thanks for figuring it out!
I’m so glad you found it helpful

Thx for sharing it was great video.
I'd like to make a lamp for my son's desk.
That’s awesome, I hope he likes it
@@cranevideo3506 I'm sure he will .
Thx
Thank you for the video! Really helpful!
Awesome!
I have wrecked these shut off valves trying to get them apart. even putting them in a vice with a wrench. How are you getting them apart??
Shopping list:
- Dimmer / light switch
- 1/2 inch water facet (with gate that is going up and down)
- 3/4 inch to 1 inch facet
- 1 inch T
- 3/8 inch OD Surgical tubing
- JB KwikWeld
- Pipe Wrench
Think I got everything =)
If you could make another one ill buy it from you
You found a dimmer that fits in there?
This actually blew my mind I honestly didn't think faucet switches are a thing
+smooth shaikh LOL. Hope you liked it.
That is vinyl tubing, surgical tubing is made of latex and is like a rubber band and you can make slingshot and water weenies out of it. It also breaks down after a year or two whereas the vinyl tubing will still be good decades later.
Skip the JB Weld and use some Teflon tape. Save some money and it'll do the job just as well. And it sets instantly lol.
Interesting idea.
I have to give that a try. Not sure it will have a tight enough fit but worth a shot
@@cranevideo3506 the nice thing about it is that if it isn't tight enough, you can wrap it around again. It's completely adjustable.
@@adamlogan384 very true. Thank you for the tip. Will definitely give it a try
What no mason jar lamp shade? The lamp still looks cool.
lol. I’ll have to work on that one
Thanks for tutorial, very easy to follow.
Any ideas on how to use a dimmer switch instead of just on/off?
I have thought about but need to find one that will fit.
Thank you for the video, and thanks for actually speaking and explaining what you are doing! I am thinking about adding epoxy through the plastic tube to add extra strength. Let me know what you think if you get a chance. I will let you know if it works.

Wow, your way is much better than what I was going to try. Thanks
How would you attach this switch to a wall plate. I made a pipe chandelier and I’d love a wall switch to match. Any ideas? Thanks

Hey! You say 1/2 gate valve in video and 3/4 on list? Which one is it good sir
This is great thank you. I was wondering how much you have in parts for this because they seem to be selling them for about $15 now pre-made
If you count your time I’d be hard pressed to say paying $15 wasn’t worth it. With that said I have never tried one of the pre made ones and I wonder about the quality. I believe on average I have spent right around $15 in parts to make one of the switches

@@speckles3012 Amazon and other spots

Can you show how to wire 3 light bulbs using a rotary switch ... ?
Wire all of the lights in series, or parallel if you wanted to stop all the lights from going out when out burns out. Wire the switch on the hot side of the wires from the power source.
Is there a video on how to wire this switch and can u use 3 4 watt led light bulbs with this ?
So you don't need to epoxy the switch inside the pipe?
Can u use a dimmer switch???
The part list says to use a 3/4" gate valve but the video says to use a 1/2" gate valve. Which is it?
Same question
That you so much brother! What a godsend!
Glad this was helpful for you
Cool, thanks
Can you do a video on how you wired everything together?

How the hell did you get the faucet apart!? I'm going crazy trying to do it. Any tips? Tricks?
Bear Iyer same problem now did you figure it out?
2 twelve inch pipe wrench’s has always worked. Don’t get me wrong they are tight
Cheaper, easier alternatives to JB Kwik Weld, you could use either 1. Hot glue, or 2. Pipe Dope, which is a bit cheaper than JP Weld
Good idea.
I had thought about hot glue but I’m no sure it will stand the test of time.
Good problem solve.
Love Smart people... Thanks a lot

Recommended local brand named products. So it can not be a global tutorial video ( I am from thousands of miles away)
ua-cam.com/play/PLegBPdOQn4AitIXcFXITbF8bSNsYHB-Z1.html
For the record, it is VERY hard to undo the valve from its original tee. Like 30 minutes of frustration and almost a broken toe later it came off
Sorry about your toe. Typically I use two large pipe wrench’s and get them apart pretty relatively easily. But I’ll admit some are more difficult then others

What are you using to unscrew the valve? I've been using a pipe wrench but half the time the nut just gets crushed as I'm trying to loosen it.
Small pipe wrench’s’ or channel-locks it what I have used. Yeah it can be a pain to loosen it with out damaging it.
@@cranevideo3506 I've used a socket wrench to open these - worked well.
Good idea I will have to try that
Pretty damn good!
Thanks
how do you connect the cables?
Are usually solder all my connections
You don't secure the switch itself in any way? Don't you think that after a lot of movement, it would chafe the wires?
+tubefluid you could always throw some tape or shrink tube on the wires
Channel-lock pliers will work fine
+Genius Russell this is true
Can you put the JB Weld on the switch side of the tube or just on the handle side?
You could just dont get any on the switch itself. I have put it on the switch side in the past but do not do it anymore because it is such a tight fit.
Very clever way to connect them, much better than gluing the ends. Where's your other video?

would heat shrink tubing work
