    Looking to get into kayak fishing in this area and your intro describes me perfectly. Eager but not sure where to go and what to look out for. Keep up the series!

      Thanks Simon, yeah I see all these amazing spots to fish all across my socials, but never get around to it because I don’t know those little things that make a big difference, so I always end up fishing the spot I know well as I am time poor and have to make the most of every session. That’s why I thought other anglers might benefit from these videos .😁

      Good on ya mate, Yacht club is a good launching spot. As you don't have to worry about paying parking fees, if your not a local. Some good squid and Salmon in that region. Don't forget to check out part one of this video

      @@hookinmouthtackle8508 Subscribed 👌🏻. I've just moved to Altona and started spearing here. Going to use your info to try to chase some Flatties down the Webb St side although 500m is a decent fin!
      Really great info in your video, clearly laid out. Awesome work!

      Welcome to Altona mate, best place to live we have a great local community here. A spear fisherman once told me that the snapper schools move through Millers rd to flemings pool like clockwork in the spring/summer late afternoon and he is spot on

    Relly amazing video, very informative. If its okay can you share some.e landbase area too?

    • @hookinmouthtackle8508
      @hookinmouthtackle8508  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching. From a land based perspective I would fish off the boat ramp rock walls or wade into the shallow water to the right hand side of the pier. And use soft plastics chasing flathead.

    The two yellow markers on the east side of the pier are called special marks. They can indicate a number of things such as a wreck, or pipeline or other special feature. In this instance they indicate a 'No Boating Zone'. They are not there to highlight a drop off. Likewise on the west side of the pier. The two yellow buoys are also special marks. One has broken free and is currently sitting on the western shore. They don't indicate a drop off. They are there to mark the area that kite surfers must operate within to keep them away from swimmers near the pier. The other two markers off Apex Park aren't channel markers. They are called cardinal marks and indicate which side has safe navigable water. They are there to keep boat traffic away from the outlet from the waste water treatment plant which sits between them.

    • @hookinmouthtackle8508
      @hookinmouthtackle8508  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your contribution Darren, much appreciated. Regardless of the exact meaning of each of these markers, they still make good points for the kayak angler to reference as a guide in order to help line things up. The yellow maker that has recently floated off may not be there to indicate the depth but it again is roughly where the water does drop off.
      Let’s hope they put it back in its place soon 😁

      Thanks for the comment. I’ve at some point done all of the above, but now days I mostly use roof racks. I also live close enough to just wheel my kayak out of my garage and in a short walk be able to launch 🚀, so that is my main method these days

    Great practical advice. We're lucky to live in Altona. what would recommend as a good rod/reel combo for the Apex Park region. KGW, Flathead etc. Thank you

    • @hookinmouthtackle8508
      @hookinmouthtackle8508  2 роки тому

      I do like the Savage gear 1Dfr in a 7ft length, however, I think they have stopped making them. A nice light rod with plenty of flex for casting distance 👍 as for reels if you are a kayak angler then it pays to get a reel that is a little more pricey, as they often get a good dunking in the salt water, the cheap ones just don’t last. But I like to use shimmano reels about 2000 or 2500.
      Altona is a great place for many things and especially fishing. Hope this helps cheers
      Rob

    Just to let you know there's also two reefs that run out in front of miller's road that contain bronze whalers when the bay is flooded with baby snapper

    • @hookinmouthtackle8508
      @hookinmouthtackle8508  Рік тому

      Yeah mate generally I don’t fish those reefs that often, so therefore I didn’t cover them. Having said that I have had plenty of success on them in years gone by, however found the inner Flemings pool more productive

    It’s that dirty the water there atm I went there yesterday made me sick so polluted now I wouldn’t even eat out if it … there was dead fish washing up at Altona beach see about 6 dead ones never used to be that bad

    • @hookinmouthtackle8508
      @hookinmouthtackle8508  7 місяців тому +1

      Hey, normally the EPA shut the beach down when it is polluted to point of danger for people. There was a lot of people down here over the last few days and in the water. It has been smelling strongly over the last two weeks up near Apex park. Given it has been pretty choppy for a number of days the water is dark at the movement, the last two days have had calm conditions, it was like glass out there this morning and for most of the day, plenty of Kayaker out too.
