Sorry for poor quality, found on an old VHS tape from around the 70's. Believe the original was shot on early camcorder or similar. Interesting to see the old motors etc:
Many thanks for the upload! Lived in Summit Road, between 1967 & 1976, backing onto the huge Gallahers factory - the trading estate was our playground, particularly on Sundays, when it felt as though the whole country was shut
I grew up in Southall (born 1966), so this is great. That kid you saw at the end could easily have been me (don't think it was) as I spent weekends with grandparents just the other side of the pedestrian tunnel on Clarence Street and used to mess about in the abandoned buildings on White St - as that kid possibly was. Bring backs so many memories. Lived just off Lady Margaret Rd (on North Ave) almost all my childhood.
what a great vid....lived on lady margaret road all my childhood......i knew all them roads even the old gas works...played in them areas all the time....well bought back memories this did...and moved to northolt in 76.....so know all the part/areas to......thanks for posting
I was born in Southall in 1957 ( ascot gardens ) good rare video, thanks. What I notice is how traffic free it was. Newest car was that cortina mk3 , L reg so 08/1972-07/1973
Interesting video - thanks for posting. Nice to see the small parade of shops again at the junction (read bend) of Rowdell and Kensington road - a shame the camera didn't capture the area on the left of Kensington road before the canal bridge- this would have been before the council estate was built?
Hi, this film is amazing, i have lived in the Airways housing estate off the Kensington Road (Star Path) since 1973 and this is amazing, looks as if it was not built during this filming, thank you for the posting.
What a gem. People dont attach importance to stuff like this when they were recording it. Shame people on here have to start making racist comments. Its all our history!
Nice bit of nostalgia. in the 70's I lived in Hounslow West and worked in Wealdstone, so drove that route morning and evenings. What an absolute fking bottleneck Southall was in the rush hours, a nightmare. Thank God they built the Hayes bypass A312 in the 80's.
Thanks for the upload. Did Southall Tyres exist on Lady Margaret Road during this period? I remember the owner, such a pleasant guy, always had my tyres replaced there. Anyone know what happened to him? I remember Beaconsfield Road well, I went to SCoT. The gas tower has a personal significance for me. Where the Sikh temple stands today was the site of Norman Reeves Ford. So many Mk II Cortina's! My brother and cousins all owned 1600E's. Those checkered traffic lights are going way back for me. And Fosters at the corner of Southall Broadway is just surreal now. Thanks.
Tyre shop still run by Bill's son, and the Gas Tower is no more they finished taking it down in January just gone (2019) will be housing 4,000 dwellings and a new entrance off Pump Lane Hayes all changing but NOT for the better. Thanks for comment
Really interesting video. The Glassy Junction was previously called The Railway and can be partly seen at 2:32 next to the traffic lights. Ah, Southall Gasworks, scene location for many a gritty cop drama like The Sweeney and The Professionals. Lived on the Golflinks Estate 69-81 myself.
The Railway Arms, We used to go there on Friday nights to see Charlie Take Five play... 2:39 seeing old Judd's SCRAP merchants in The Crescent - We offloaded many a dodgy bit of old lead and copper there... A lot of fun as kids spent demolishing the Gasworks after it became disused. Fun and interesting... Thanks!
1:24 Anyone recall the motor spares place opposite the Seagull pub run by a lady called Anne ? Always open, always had what you needed to keep your banger on the road for another couple of months...
I don't recall ever seeing her husband (didn't even occur to me that she had one) Although I do seem to remember there being someone else behind the counter from time to time.. I also seem to recall that there used to be a gaggle of car sales men who used to frequent the Lady Margaret pub a bit further along the Lady Margaret road, sadly no longer a pub but the building is still there and used as a clinic... I used to use the bike shop on Lady Margaret road run by a lovely old fella called Vic who used to be pro bike rider back in the day... Again, always very helpful to us young lads... There used to be a club behind the Seagull pub where we used to go and dance on a Friday night I think, and on Sunday the same outfit which ran the music at the Seagull set up camp at the Byron pub on the Ruislip road Northolt. Worked there a few times myself over the years, sadly that one has long since given way to housing but the music hall at the rear of the pub had a great sprung dance floor... Lovely memories of growing up in the Greenford/Southall area... If anyone else has any such memories it would be great to read about them... I went to Stanhope school on Greenford broadway by the way and lots of my school friends would have lived around that area, Somerset road, Mansell road etc. I lived the other side of Greenford towards Perivale park and still remember great times playing footfall in that park or making rope swings across the stream and collecting golf balls and selling them back to the golfers, probably the same ones who lost them !! I still can't resist picking up the odd lost ball when I walk through the park, nowadays I just throw them back onto the green though...
sorry if it was besides the point, the sikh community would be amazed of what the community looked like back then. still southall is a great place for sikhs either way.
The Sikhs who were around at this time (My family arrived in the late 60s) remark Southall as incredible in that time... what a hell it turned into eh?
Hughie Dixon.... Dixon of Dockhughie.... Or just Dixon of Norwood green.... or even Sikh Hughie.... Anyone recall a Hughie Dixon from back in the day ? Maybe you sat next to a certain Mr Dixon at school, or maybe you recall a young Hughie who was always a little over delighted at the sight of a bit of Sari... Either way we'd like to hear from you, we have people waiting for your call... and remember... 'Keep em peeled'
@mrbillhicks , plenty of skinheads in sight, then the racist violent bastards were chased out of southall. Also the people with the turbans the Sikhs have contrbuted to your country and its war effects.without them you would have lost both world wars. Your country the Uk robbed the world

Incredible footage. Thank you for sharing.
This is incredible footage. Wow, it’s a gem to see such videos from so many years back. Thank you for uploading!
Lived in Southall on Rosecroft Road from '62 until '69. Thanks for uploading.

I lived in Allendale Ave just around the corner from you until about the time you were born. Thanks for comment

Are you still living in Southall?
Great stuff to see Southall in the 70s and see the change now.
For the worse I think, thanks for comment

A312 started 80s finished in early 90s, thanks for comment
Is that the same Hayes bypass that killed the shops in Hayes Town centre and dumped all the traffic in Northolt?
@@jeffholt9437 Hayes town centre was probably killed when they pedestrianised it. But more likely when Hayes became a third world shit hole.
@@shirleymental4189 lol
Thanks for the upload.

I would say definately 70's rather than 80's..great video!!!

1:24 Anyone recall the motor spares place opposite the Seagull pub run by a lady called Anne ? Always open, always had what you needed to keep your banger on the road for another couple of months...
Yes I do! her husband did virtually nothing, apart from drive about in his Roller. I had a small car sales next door in the early days. Great memories

Yep! run entirely by Anne, but her Lazy Husband did nothing apart from posing in his Roller, those were the days. Thanks for comment
Was that on Lady Margaret rd then yes I met her once.
Sorry to hear that :(
