Between you, Morgan Donner, and Rachel Maksy all creating these gorgeously aesthetic historical studio spaces, my husband's about to be very annoyed with my home improvement decisions. 😅
Same 😂
Don't forget Nicole's!
@Elizabeth Pratt The OG, Love them all but she set the bar for this.
The amount this made me giggle - is a lot. ALL of the kudos to you!
Its even more infuriating when your partner has a more modern tastes...
As a woman working in the AV industry that niche rant about the tech bros was food for my soul ❤ Also the space looks absolutely beautiful!!
*tech bro lighting ranting*
"No SHADE, guys, BUT..."
Seconding what @payden said, it’s hard to learn how to do lighting in lots of different ways from folks telling you the same three ways of lighting. The best coworkers I’ve had have repeatedly told me - “there isn’t just one right way, there’s only what’s considered familiar and ‘standard’.” But it’s a CREATIVE industry for a reason! Creative problem solving and learning by doing is hard, but Abby teaching us another use and another lighting technique that isn’t vaguely labeled as “cinematic” is important because of that!
I actually really liked the lighting rant! It's important for it to be said 🤩
Also: your dad is very dadly, just an extremely dadlike dad ya know? Lol
"we'll make this sh*t happen. How bout that?" Let me tell you... as someone who lost their super handy dad over a decade ago, I needed to hear Someone's dad say that sorta thing. My heart just about burst. Also love all the other things about this video too :)
Your parents are a national treasure and should be protected at all costs. Imagine a world where everyone had parents as supportive and in your corner as Abby's, y'all - 🤯💗✨🏡🏆🕉️
#exactly!!!!
I am sooooooo envious of Abby’s parents! To be fair, mine did drive across country with a moving van full of antiques and furniture when my ex and I bought our house in the 90’s. But the level of DIY support that Abby is getting is just next level!
The space looks sooooo cool! I’m glad it makes you feel all those great things, Abby!
I wish one of my parents could have given me that kind of mechanical help in my 8th grade science class when I had to make a model car from scratch. Not one of us knew how to do it and it was very stressful. Was much happier with the next project of a mousetrap car where we were allowed to buy a model kit. I was in my happy place following the directions.
It isn't just lighting, when figuring out the microphone I wanted to buy I wanted to listen to samples recorded on them but the space is dominated by guys so finding someone with a similar voice to mine reviewing different mics was a challenge!
The mantle size is actually perfect for your backdrop as it seems like the corner of a much larger salon. The effect is perfect. You' ve seen it in camera yourself. Looks great and you'd never know how close the other walls actually are. I'd say hang nice spare remnant fabric on them with hoocks or hangersfor accoustics, display, and storage?
Congrats on your new space! I do some event lighting, which means I play with colored lights, and I think you might like the effect of moving slightly away from the color light you have coming from your Aperture front lights. Right now they're very cool/blue, which combined with your very fair skin and the blue background (and the blue dress for this video), it's washing you out slightly. This color light is just ever so slightly on the harsh end. So, if you can re-color your LED bulbs via your phone, I'd suggest perhaps shifting the light ever so slightly into yellow, orange, or red. (How this is presented in your app can change from app to app.) Not a lot, just a touch, and perhaps pull out some of the blue. That can warm up your skin a little without the need for adjustments via makeup, and it can make your studio overall feel a little more warm and inviting without decreasing the amount of light you want to get rid of unflattering shadows. If you can't program the color of your LEDs, there's also going for some old school gel filters, which are just sheets of acetate in various colors that will tint the light flowing through them, and for these I'd use a yellow or light orange. You'll want to experiment with this (and for all I know, you like the very blue light!), but overall I think you've light the space really well!
I usually keep them around 5200-5400k just a touch warmer than daylight cause of that reason. They were on full blast though for this video, in part because I wanted people to really see behind me. Lol I’ll def experiment with even a bit warmer! I’m still trying to figure it all out so I appreciate the feedback! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Very interesting. I was noticing the cool lighting too from a Victorian interior perspective - a more amber cast gives candlelight, firelight, gaslight. And makes old wood and wallpaper glow in that magical “historically accurate” way ha ha. Beautiful, intricate set!
@@grizeldamayhem You do have a point, but I want to point out that part of this is due to the lack of windows in Abby's studio. Bernadette Banner has a strong Edwardian aesthetic, but she films almost exclusively next to windows. Whatever extra lighting she has is matched to the color of natural sunlight. This doesn't take away from the historical aesthetic of her background at all, because it always looks like she's filming on a slightly overcast day next to a window. Which she does do a lot, I just don't think it's 100% time. (Full sunlight will wash you out, so she's not filming while sunlight is streaming directly in.)
Abby has chosen to light her studio in a different way than Bernadette that's not meant to look like she's sitting in front of or next to a window, as she's got three layers of lights in her design (back, top, and front). Which is a good choice (especially for a basement studio) and she doesn't need to go as yellow as candlelight or gaslight for a historical effect. But there is a strong association between yellow light and time periods/interiors that predate lightbulbs capable of a 'pure' white light (which has more blue wavelengths than earlier lights). We also call a yellow heavy light 'warm' because it's closer to firelight, and our brains associate fire with heat more than light, and that creates some unconscious emotional reactions to yellow skewed light.
Fascinating! Lighting is a whole art form in itself. It’s amazing how many genres UA-camrs have to take on to create the fantasy.
@@grizeldamayhem yeah I was thinking about that too as I was watching. I have zero technical idea of how to achieve that warm candle-lit effect though
In the years I got to teach advanced placement art history it was always fun for me to see which artist/period/style that the class resonated with. Every year a class would latch onto something and it would inform their every experience. Only once did a class come to LOVE Roccoco. It was the strangest group I ever had. They were so much fun, yet puzzling in so many ways. I would always conceal from all classes my own preferences as I wanted them to find themselves. I'm not sorry that I retired - but I am sorry that I don't get to have groups of art history students in my life. :)
If I could, I'd go full on Rocco and baroque, "if it's not baroque, don't fix it.) Cogsworth was not wrong,😊
i love roccoco! my favourite probably tends towards more late victorian but roccoco belongs in like... kitchens, bathrooms, entryways. it feels like light and fun and public to me, whereas I'd want a darker look for more private spaces like bedrooms. also, roccoco always makes me think of cake frosting and ice cream, and then i get hungry 😂😂
As someone who is very accident prone and suffers from intrusive thoughts, power tools scare me. As such those willing to learn to use them inspire me and command respect... even as I fear for them. Go you Abby for all the work that went into bringing this room together.
Wdym by "suffers from intrusive thoughts"? Do you act on them?
Mine are more like: if I'm cutting things with a knife, I think, "What if I lifted this up and cut my hand off? That would probably hurt." But would you go through with the action of the hand cutting?
@@zvezdoblyat Intrusive thoughts are those that you can NOT just put aside. It would be more like "What if I lifted this up and cut my hand off? I need to be careful doing that. But what if I lifted this up and cut my hand off? I should watch a youtube tutorial. But what if I cut my hand off? I have made doubly sure and have done several dry runs to see how it works inside and out, I CANNOT cut my hand off.
... But what if I am such a dumbass that I forget all that in the moment and cut my hand off?"
And so on and so forth.
@@Nala15-Artist wow, that sucks :( is there anything you can do to prevent them?
@Nala15 DA-Artist yep. That is pretty much a look into my head. However, the original responder is right in labeling what they exampled as an intrusive thought in that for some people an intrusive thought is something that more pops in the head, maybe vaguely disturbing/unwanted, then be dismissed and set aside. My understanding is that is actually how it works for most neurotypical folks with the occurrence of such thoughts being more rare. Its for those of us with anxiety or ocd (or both) and certain other conditions that the thought can become obsessive/repetitive/really hard to shake.
@딸기 가 좋아 it depends on the person but mostly comes down to how how their brain and triggers work. Generally, there is no way of presenting them as a whole but you can learn coping mechanisms for dealing with them when they come up and there are things that can be done to make them less numerous, frequent, and severe but times of stress along with many other things can work against that. Like most things regarding mental health it involves work and self-care, is different for everyone but will probably involve getting some health professionals involved at some point.
Youngest of 3 daughters here and "last chance at a boy" I was the defacto helper for my dad growing up. It started with holding flashlights and handing tools. I honestly don't know when I first used the table saw (under supervision of course!) I blame my extreme potty mouth on these experiences 😂😂 your room is f-ing LOVELY!! You should absolutely be super proud!
Funny that you're the defacto helper. I'm the same in my family but I'm the oldest and the ONLY girl. My dad and I joke that I'm the favorite son because he knows he can count on me to help him.
A Catherine de Medici Time Travelling Society bluestocking-soiree-themed live would work :)
I absolutely adore how the wallpaper and the fireplace grate reflect each other. And I love your explanation of how this is a salon space that we are invited into. It turned out beautifully and I look forward to many conversations here!
I love everything about this room - the wall paper, the paint colour, the mantlepiece, the stained glass fireguard. I also had no idea how hard it was the light a room well, my respect for you-tubers has definitely gone up! I'm gonna be really disappointed though if your gin jar isn't full of actual gin - a raging gin habit would definitely go with the whole aesthetic!
it doesn't have it's stopper lol
@@AbbyCox You can get one!
Thank you for saving the mantle and showing the beautiful wood that it was made out of. I like the finish, appreciate the small imperfections, agree gives history. As a woodshop teacher’s daughter, learning to use the power tools were necessary evil.
Oh, to have been a woodshop teacher's daughter... 🤩 I would have loved the chance to learn all the Serious™ power tools!
@@moxiebombshell I inherited my dads tools, I don’t have room for them all. Although it comes in handy, it wasn’t pushed to learn how to use the tools. I just wish I had all Dads experience too. Not as good of a woodworker but am learning woodcarving. Would like to get a table lathe.
@Tudorosities by Maureen look for a "Makers Space", they often have classes to learn. Cheaper than buying a new tool & deciding you don't like it or have room for it. Also, consider dust collection now. Wood turning = mess. A cheap way to start is a shop vac attached to a "flue" - dust tape the hose to the flue & mount flue beside lathe. They sell "flue" pieces made out of tin, or just make a box and cut a hole for the shop vac's hose !?
Also, still use a ventilator !!!!
This room is gloriously eclectic, utterly feminine, amusingly chaotic and totally Abby 😍 It's perfection ❤
I was thinking "Whimsical Historical Maximalism"
Btw… just enjoying your journey from repping shoes, sewing, and sewing archeology, living in high in desert (I’m from the valley, Sacramento) to now. Seeing you make your way with change happening in your life and making art and making art of life, it lets me be a little more accepting of my journey. From the outside, yours looks full of good humor, gentleness, focused on moving forward. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Seeing the ways you and Nicole have.....reimagined.....the ways you approach your passions, over the last months, has been really inspiring to me. Knowing that people with considerably more life experience and understanding of who they are still need to reevaluate and make changes to their path is incredibly reassuring as I figure out what my life looks like after university. Thank you so much for being willing to share with us through this time!!
If you haven't already noticed this, it can be fun to start asking people you know who are working in different fields what their degree is actually in (or what they started out training for, for non-degree-holding folks). In my experience, many if not most people end up working in an entirely different field than the one they originally went to school for 😊
I love the 1830s hair vibe that's been going on in the past couple of videos. It just looks so fun!
The room is gorgeous, but I also spent a lot of time admiring that beautiful grey top/tunic (dress?) you were wearing.
Meee tooo!
Did she make it, thrift it, or is it possibly available somewhere for purchase? I want one or three!
I enjoy seeing your doggo participating in the clearing out process 😂
The Voriagh dress and studio decor are chef's kiss together 👌🤌
I'm always so fascinated by how American houses seem to have drop ceilings and what's beyond them, I've pulled apart wall and ceilings here in Finland and they're filled with sawdust or wool for insulation and have untreated wood that you could never make look that nice 😂
I love the wallpapers you chose, hope you can figure out the final touches with lighting! 💕
Never before had the modern use of aesthetic hit so hard. That room is a wonder and the result of much hardwork, skill and style. Thank goodness there is a place to swoon when the beauty is too much to behold.
Creative product photographer here, loved the rant on lighting! So many videographers/photographers think you need to have a formulaic lighting, done the same way over and over and over, and it’s so wrong! Embrace being creative with your light shaping and try new things! Sure it can be frustrating trying to plan a studio, but its sooo worth it. First thing I noticed about this video is wow that lighting is so flattering and refreshing. Your studio is adorable and LOVE the embrace of color and shapes and design! Great job!
I am in love with the fireplace mantle!! I am so glad you put in the effort to strip the paint, but I also love that there's still bit of the paint there to tell its story. AHHH I just love it!! The whole room came out fantastic, but I'm a sucker for a good mantle, as weird as that sounds...
This space is so beautiful, I love it. ❤
Also, thank you for your random ADHD mentions. I aspire to be as creative and skilled as you are and knowing we both face the same struggles I feel more capable and motivated to try and do different kind of things. 😊
I feel like many creatives, including a lot of youtubers, are neurodivergent! (How many people don't know and how many are just keeping it private?)
I think ADHD works well with content creation because it's all about seeking novelty and jumping from project to project! I certainly work like that with my art projects 😅
@@helenm1085 I know, but just hearing those little mentions from her makes me happy at the moment. It just feels validating.
I love trying out new things and I want to do a lot, but very often I am too overwhelmed to start. Or I wait for weeks or months to finish something, because one part makes me stressed. 😬
@@klaudynakot yes! Totally! I have ADHD too and it's nice to see some representation :~)
omg i love your studio! amazing transformation. I love how personal it is :) great job on the lighting too, thanks for the mention!! ❤ p.s. outlets in the ceiling or the floor are a game changer!
Ahhh thank you! Huge fan of your channel! ❤️
I love that you explained your studio. The dark wallpaper and couch and fireplace work really well together and I love them! I'm not dissing the rest of the room but you didn't focus on it enough for me to appreciate it. Looking forward to whatever topic you decide to introduce next!
I love a period-minded reno and I LOVE the idea of you channel as your salon where we come in and exchange ideas 💜💜💜💜💜
First thing, Abby, I love your space. It really works because you never really shoot a wide angle of both sides of the room. You can almost pass it off as two different rooms.
Thank you for the lighting lesson! As an aspiring UA-camr that was very educational. Also just seeing your studio from a wide angle and being able to see that context of it.
The fireplace is beautiful and leaving some paint in the crevices was absolutely a good choice. You don't get into those tight corners with sandpaper. There are sharp thin metal scrapers for that but it beautiful just as it is.
OMG! That miter saw! You spent at least three times too much money on a saw four times more powerful that you needed to cut a few pieces of trim molding. A hand saw would have worked though, admittedly, more trouble than necessary but you can build an entire house with a saw like that! When you said how intimidated you were I thought, "Really, Abby?" Then you cut to the garage and trying to cut those tiny sticks with a fourteen inch in blade, I just died! 😆
Abby, I love the way that your home is coming together. When you showed the second wallpaper and got to the historical rant (loved it) my first thought was about how old structures change through history. Families collect, pass down, change these pieces. They also mix and match. We had beautiful colonial back in the day, it had tongue and grove floors, built in place kitchen cabinets, stained-leaded glass windows, etc… and someone put asbestos siding on the outside. Anyway, history is what we carry with us and then we grow more.
OMG the paint stripping is giving me PTSD when I did that with an old dresser. It was unending but in the end was worth it. I applaud your dedication Abby. ❤
I am honoured to hang out into your lovely and ever so stunning salon with you and I thank you for the constant invitation, conversation and the awesome shenanigans you bring. 'Twould be far more boring on these here interwebs without the likes of you.
I once had to peel epoxy off of wood I was finishing, it took d a y s and in the end I had to re-sand and re-stain the top. I imagine stripping paint is similarly hellish but I haven’t had to do that just yet 😂 the wood came out fine btw, it’s now my sewing desk, but boy are DIYs a JOURNEY sometimes
You *should* feel Proud, Abby! That's a lot of work, done well.
Epic rant! I adore the space. Love the mixiness of things that represent you. I live in a Skoolie that echoes my personality, where I get the good feels that you do from your *home*. You deserve to be proud! 🤍
LOL Just had to stop and Google 'Skoolie.' That's so awesome. Congrats!
The first gift The Hubs ever purchased me was a scroll saw. We were like early dating. He was adding to my saw collection. 🤣 That was 24 years ago. Never be afraid of a ‘manly’ tool and always hang on to a man who will gift you that tool. 🌈🌈🦋🦋
Your salon is perfection💜 Love your mom & dad getting right to work with you. Makes me miss my dad so hard. However, my burning question is the dress you’re wearing-did I miss the making of, is there a pattern, etc?! I REALLY need it in my life🥰 Thanks for taking us on your adventure in decorating. I’m a maximalist so love all of it.
I love how she was cutting her carrots like a Japanese/Korean mommy/grandma, hahahha, it was so cute, lol. Odie's Oil!! The favorite of Angie of Transcend Furniture!!!! Love that channel
I love the space, and as a fellow W&M grad, the drunken antics story warmed my heart and reminded me of a few of my own friends encounters.
Love the space, your dad is great, seems fun to work with. There are remote switches to control the lights but you have probably already researched that, ours were from radio shack so kinda dated myself.
Love your dad judging your sandals, the room looks amazing but he's the best part of the video hahaha
You got my like at about 10 seconds in. You did create a real salon for us! Oh jeez, the mantle. I feel ya. In high school, I was in the first shop class that allowed girls. It was called basic home maintenance. We'll allow the patriarchal allowing girls into a home maint class and not auto shop yet, but it was the 70s. I chose to strip and refinish a side table given to me by my grandmother. This was before safe chemical strippers. And even the nasty chemical strippers didn't make a dent in the lead paint under several layers. I should have left it at lead because it was pretty, but I ended up with a heat gun and a scraper. Yeah, lead paint fumes for the whole class. But I did learn a lot, and I have more tools than most men, and know how to READ DIRECTIONS. That wallpaper is gorgeous and sort of Morris-ish. Another creator I follow and love as much as you took a month to redo his set, and recently posted that process on Joe Scott - TMI. I was already feeling your pain about lighting and cameras and mics. He did the same brain explosion you did about the tech stuff. Even after having "experts" help him, it was a real bitch to get it done. He's a nerd, not a mechanical sort. ANYWAY... Aren't you hot with all the lights? Girl, I am so jealous you get to have this gorgeous space that is all YOU YOU YOU! You look successful in this space. Full stop.
I'm a staff trainer who's been hoping to make a more professional filming space, and this video and your resources are incredibly useful. THANK YOU for taking the time to discuss this level of detail for us! Now - can you do one specifically on sound and microphones in different environments?
I am too anxious to use a sewing machine, much less a power tool, so kudos! Ready for tea, biscuits, and brilliant chat about history, clothing, food, and decor!
I love that you call this room your salon. Congratulations on how wonderful it looks . Love that you learned new skills.
Your dad radiated such intensely dad-like dad vibes and it made this already incredibly comforting video just infinitely more comforting. Chefs kiss.
Seriously, that entire rant about lighting both makes me happy and makes me feel so seen!
Also, I love your parents so much. xD
Handy moms and dads who get in on the DIYs are the best! 😊
I now have the sudden urge to redecorate. My poor bank account can't cope 😂.
I really really really like that it reminds me of your first space but is just different enough that my eyes are having fun looking around ☺️also that blue is so pretty with that wallpaper!!!
Fabulous looking room! I think Nicole R. 's youtube setting has some competition, girl! And I bet you saved a ton of $$ doing a lot of the work "DIY' and with friends who knew what they were doing (the lighting dude!)! Love all your wallpaper choises! Congrats on a job well done!
Great job with the room!!! It’s fabulous, congratulations 😂 but the story at the end
The things we laypeople know nothing about and how important they are to the quality of a video. I like the room a lot. The lovely blue, the fireplace and wallpaper. It's pretty.
I love you, your Mom, and your Dad. Thank you for making my life brighter.
Looks amazing Abby! Stripping is hard! ❤
So cute! Love the room, and all the things in it! Also, especially love the paint residue on the fireplace; my mom is VERY into that aesthetic, so I grew up with it, and love it too. There's just something so lovely about being able to see a piece of furniture's lived history!
Love your boudoir!! It is beautiful. Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky is the best area to find beautiful antiques. My husband's side of the family brought our antique furniture from Indiana to California and I got all the pieces as both of my sister-in-laws like modern. My mom is from Indiana too. I have most of her glassware that was her mother's. Unfortunately, a lot broke in the Sylmar Earthquake. I love what you are doing with your house. I can't wait to see what you are going to do with the rest of the rooms.
The mantle being that size gives the impression you are sitting in the corner of your salon. If it was smaller that illusion wouldn't hold. I love that wallpaper!
The Williamsburg Police Station story is so chaotic 😅 Playing beer pong with rum gives you some rough nights, haha! Gorgeous studio by the way. The wallpaper is chic and I am here for the MANTLE!
I love so much about this room, but most of all I love how joyous and confident you look in it! Brava, ma’am.
OMG. You nailed the "What's Up". There are also uses for people of color. No one addresses this. Thank You.
So proud of you and your space! Love the blue and the pink floral wallpaper. So pretty!
I'm very much here for the light geekery and for the heavy sighs from your dad.
It looks gorgeous!!! Did you consider using a dremmel tool to get into the crevices? They work brilliantly.
It is definitely YOU! A perfect space to do what you do... I must admit though, I thought you were going to break into song at about 25:24... 😆 🎶"I fell pretty! Oh so pretty! 🎶
The stained glass at the fire place is just beautiful.
I agree! If I hear 'What's up everybody!' as the first line of a video - I switch off!
I loved this look into everything. all your thoughts. Lighting ranr. Thanks so much Abby!
The studio looks SO GOOD! You did a great job!
Your relationship with your parents remind me of my own. Dad is the handyman who's always ready to help, and mom and I go antiquing at least once per year (and always come home with more than we intended). 😅
I feel that barrier to woodworking tools, as well. I think of them as a land beyond and I'm always so impressed (and unfortunately surprised - I am a child of my time) when ladies on the UA-cam get amongst it with real for true wood tools - just like the one you used! I gave a happy clap when you did the thing and cut the bit of boarding - go you! I adore your lovely and elegant room.
So, I am not remotely interested in getting into filming, but the lighting discussion was really interesting and I very appreciated you sharing your process for that.
Hearing you talk about the lighting was really interesting! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it
Thank you for the light dude rant. I felt exactly the same frustration coming up when setting up my studio. I really don't want a purple color in the background and I also really don't want to sit in a dark room illuminated by bright lights. I want the room to be filled with light, too! Not everyone is going for the cool vibe. I want cozy vibes!
I was feeling the mantle reno, too. It is now year 3 that I tackle to remove the many coats of color from our wooden doors. The many details make it so pretty but also impossible to get all the paint stripped away. It is totally worth it and your mantle piece looks amazing :D
Mr Morgan Doner would be so proud of you conquering your mitre saw fear. It looks amazing! Can see many shenanigans going down in there
You are so blessed to have both of your parents. Oh Mum y'all worked so hard.. it's so beautiful!!! What a dream. Oh I love your dad. Thanks Dad for making that a safe hanging piece for her light. You rock. Dad's rock. Oh darling it's so wonderful. Your little magic area. I love it. 🎉❤😊
Just wanted you to know that I absolutely love your vlog style videos. I’m sorry they don’t do as well.
I just spent 27 minutes being totally entertained as well as educated by you. Thank you, Abby, for letting us see not only what you did, but how you did it. I worked in TV years ago and revamped several studios including set design and lighting. There wasn't much to work with in the mid-70s. You, on the other hand, with more education on what you wanted and what was needed, did a wonderful job creating a multi-purpose space. I look forward to each new video to learn new things and be entertained as well. See you next time. Bye.❤
“No shade” mid-lighting rant absolutely sent me 😂💀 as a former production assistant: valid rant! Very much agree.
I don't know what I love about this UA-cam channel more: the historical clothing info, or Abby Cox's delightfully bubbly self?
Another amazing video! Hearing the joy and excitement in your voice put a smile on my face. While I don't know you personally this room seems to echo and bring to life comments you have made in other videos about things you enjoy and personal preferences. Have fun with the miter saw and I think the mantle turned out beautifully. I used to really enjoy furniture refinishing since my sister introduced me to the "hobby" when I was about 8
.
I live in Marion County, Kentucky and was wondering if you would mind sharing some of your favourite shops, markets or events in the Kentucky, Indiana or Ohio area. If you have previously listed these and I missed them, please accept my apology.
I look forward to all your upcoming videos! Thank you!!
omg, your lighting rant was so funny and good
I'm obsessed with the wallpaper! It looks absolutely amazing Abby!
This is fabulous! I understand that particular pride in finding out you're actually good at things, it's powerful! Delighted it turned out how you hoped. Yay!
2:14 It's refreshing to hear people being open about neurodiversity/not feeling like it's some deep dark secret we have to keep secret anymore. Representation matters. ❤
re: lighting, theatre tech still discusses this, I'm sure. I took theatre tech in university in the 80-90s and they taught about colouring the face with a pink/amber on one side and a dim cyan on the other, lighting the back without affecting the front and keying the colors to contrast with the foreground, using backlight, forelight, all that stuff. Maybe you can find an online course in stage lighting. From there, a smart person such as yourself can extrapolate and test with the camera to get exactly what you want. One youtuber who does amazing lighting is contraponts. Check her out some time.
I loved that you added in the....panelling?... wall detail? The narrow framing around your artwork and the floral wallpaper. Great detailing to add in a sense of history.
That room turned out so cute! Not my aesthetic at all but it's part of the reason why I love these kind of channels. It opens me up to new ideas and I've even adopted some of the small aesthetics from Abby, Rachel Maksy, Morgan Donner, The Sewlo Artist & others into my mish-mosh witch-world. Also, that fireplace is so amazing! I love that the history was kept and it shows imperfections. It's become more like art than a brand-spanking new piece of furniture that 'looks' old. Well done Abby!
The studio turned out so great! But I was kinda looking for the three witches picture...
This space really is a testament to how far you've come, and I just really want to congratulate you on that!
And, ok, I just have to say I appreciated the lighting rant. I don't know if I'll ever get to a point where I can invest in a proper lighting setup, or have the space to put it in, but all my knowledge of lighting was for the stage and just doesn't really translate. I've given up even trying to get a ring light to work. Seeing what you've done really helps reframe what my goals could be.
Your new studio reminds me of an old fashion movie set.
LOVE the studio! Fabulous choice with the dark wallpaper, it ties everything together (blue wall, sofa, fireplace). I'm dying for that stained glass fireplace though; did you find that antiquing as well?!
Link is in the description!!!
These spaces make me think of the parlors of old. I love the pretty spaces. We just don't have one at this point. Beautiful! Let it be a Happy Space too!
When you started talking about your lighting setup, I actually had the thought that it and your room set up gave me the same energy as Mister Roger's Neighborhood. It's very soft and cozy and friendly.

Congrats on your new lovely space! So much work and skill that you put in it! The wallpaper is a total win - and I loved the lighting rant. Upwards and onwards!
I adore this but sponsor Abby's aesthetic is everything. The dress, the sunnies, the hair, the sun, the spatula, love your channel. Now I'm super ready to watch the rest of the video and get excited for my potential 2024 houseeeee
As a girl growing up, i am so proud of my dad showing and encouraging me to work with power tools and doing things myself so i would never be tge helpless damsel in distress ❤ he is the best and taught me to be strong and independent. I am teaching this to my daughter too and hope this will be passed on for many many generations 💪
Hallese is my favorite UA-camr when it comes to lighting.
I love your parents. Especially your dad! His energy made me happy lol.
I felt your lighting rant on a spiritual level.
I also love the space you’ve created. You can really see the love and effort put into it!
