She’s really in her prime here, I feel like positions as an album has great staying power and will continue to age well, and eternal sunshine is finally a collected cohesive project that feels like more than just a tracklist of radio bops and ballads.

This album has no skips. Beautifully produced, modern and nostalgic. The whispers of “real life events” is just a cherry on top that makes us connect with the artist, but not a necessity.

I think "but at least I look this good" is not a lazy line, Ariana is so comedic and as you said, has a hard time confronting emotions head-on. It's an element of comedic relief that I think she needed in order to feel good about the song. Like in the vulnerable last verse of thank u next when she says "God forbid something happens, least this song is a smash"

also, if u look at the song in a different light, it becomes something totally different. i think the song is about how she is portrayed in the media, 'dont wanna let this story die', 'papers and pens', 'me and my truth we sit in silence' referring to how she never replies, 'u got me misunderstood but at least i look this good' as in youre reporting on the story wrong and using my face for it

No I thought this was exactly a rip off of “at least this song is a smash” and does feel lazy and out of beat with the rest of the songs.
I agree that it's not a lazy line, but I actually read it more, in the context of the prior lyrics, that her partner doesn't understand her, her intentions, how she's feeling, but seems to value or appreciate her body/aesthetics. Like sure, you don't get *me* but I'm still hot to you so it's whatever.

I was judging her for a whole year and then I suddenly remembered that 2 years ago I wanted this man so bad I thought he would choose me over his girlfriend... I just erased it from my memory. Curious what you think about “we can’t be friends” being about the general public/critics/ even her fans?
The “papers and pens” line and her not wanting to answer the question who the song is about in the Zac Sang interview sold it for me.
Honestly, it made me respect her even more considering all the parasocial pop star relationships. Also feels very self aware “I’ll wait for your love”
I don't really put a lot of stock into that opinion bc I think the lyrics quite clearly describe a public breakup, and the video depicts pretty much the whole conceit of the album mediated through the lyrics of this song. there's a BTS video she just uploaded where she talks about what the song actually means, and it's not about the media lmao
I thought being played like Atari might be a reference to page 6 via page 6 Atari magazine. In this song tho the papers and pens maybe represent fixed ideas or ones influenced or altered by media or smear. Maybe getting back to the truth after being brainwashed. It is a bit like honeymoon avenue. The live from london last year is one of her best performances.

Eternal sunshine is one of my favorite movies mostly because I’m a Long Island native so when she centered the theme of this album around the movie I was more emotional than I should’ve been, that music video was a perfect tribute to the movie

i feel like going from eternal sunshine to supernatural kind of dulled down supernatural imo. i mean going from eternal sunshine with debatably the catchiest chorus of the album and such a golden amazing beautiful bridge to supernatural made supernatural doomed to be frowned upon. i also think supernatural ft troye is better than the original. true story though... dont even get me started i could write a whole essay on why true story is one of my favs from ari of all time

I've been listening to this album on repeat since it came out. Although I wish some of the notes were a little more belty instead of this airy tone, I understand why she did it. Her performance overall is sooo good.

I have never listened to a full ariana grande album and I was pleasantly surprised! The songs lean more into my type of music than her other singles like positions
One thing I was thinking about was how True Story is a song that is supposed to be telling something, but I felt as if she wasn't really saying anything at all in detail
And now seeing this video I understand it better that this was what she intended to do lol

As a huge arianator I am happy with how much it seems Ariana contributed to the writing since it was done mostly by herself. Something that I’ve always looked to other artists like Olivia Rodrigo is for more emotional music since as you said Ariana tends to pull back from those feelings in order to push herself forward in healing and put out there things her fans can hear to feel better. Eternal Sunshine isn’t afraid to acknowledge the pain and sit with it. The production makes it feel like a dreamy void, perfect for the movie it takes inspiration from. I think that can also contribute to thinking that it is missing that fullness that Ariana gives with all her layering (like in REM and Shut up) it feels intentional and I appreciate it. I will say something I think her other albums had was more variety from song to song. And I say this as a positions fan since that’s a criticism often given to the album (all the songs sound the same). But I don’t think that all the singles (except for we can’t be friends) really compare to those that came before it. Which to me is a telling sign that there was something missing. I think most of the songs makes more sense within the album instead of listening to one song I just listen to the whole album, which is not a bad thing but it’s different from her other work in that way. I don’t think it’s her best album I still think DW or sweetener takes that spot but it’s in the top three of her discography. I think as a fan it’s a bittersweet thing to not get as much music from her as before, but her relationship to the public and her management has changed so I am happy cause I know it’s better for her.

I’ve been an Ariana fan since 2016. Dangerous Woman, Sweetener, and TUN are my favorite albums. I would say that eternal sunshine is my 4th favorite, but 1st favorite in terms of the honesty and subjects she tackles. I didn’t like Positions much even though I really wanted to. I didn’t know how eternal sunshine would be because I didn’t care much for yes, and? but I was blown away by all of it. I’m so glad I decided to give it a listen with an open mind!!! I fell in love with it by the second listen through. I wasn’t expecting it to have so many soft vocals that really make the lyrics stand out. I wasn’t expecting to be as taken into her world as I was. I listened to nothing but the new album for a week straight. It’s not my favorite, but I feel like it’ll be one of the underrated ones that people will end up appreciating more as time goes on. I’m really hoping that she’ll eventually tour again. It’ll be interesting to see how the songs translate to a live show!

i clocked in with Ariana with her Thank U, Next album. Mostly because sonically that’s more my speed. Thank, U Next, Positions, and this Eternal Sunshine album are my FAVORITE projects she’s ever put out. The drama was insane to at least me because I’d assumed in 2024 people would have put more flack on THE MAN but obviously misogyny is still strong. I had to listen to Eternal Sunshine twice because i couldn’t think with THEM BEATS 😩. I will be honest yes, and scared me because it’s just not my speed but at least for me yes, and feels almost like an outlier in the album. She killed this album. Grammys 2025 will be CRAZY 😭

I think yes, and? was a good first single in the way that she needed to address the rumors somehow. There's no way she could've released a break-up/vulnerable song, no matter how great the lyrics and catchy the production, and the general public / average pop culture consumer would've accepted her skipping over all the drama.
It does have basic production and I definitely like it more in the album context than as a stand-alone single, but I think content-wise it makes sense to release it as the first single.
Edit: Huh, I haven't thought about the lyrical placement too much, because true story -> the boy is mine -> yes, and? -> we can't be friends all address the public in a way or another. I guess the difference is that you can interpret all three (besides yes, and?) to be about a relationship too, but after she explained true story and the boy is mine... album context imo.

I have this idea that the title track eternal sunshine might be directed towards herself. There's this line 'now she's in my bed laying on your chest' which is literally depicted on the album cover as two versions of herself. Also the phrase 'yet you played me like Atari' has a shortened version of her name in it that people often use. Calling her ex her eternal sunshine also seems kinda weird to me, I think she's rather talking about the hopeful person she used to be during the relationship and wants to continue being without him. Ariana isn't unfamiliar with making songs as inner dialogues and disguising them as being about external people. For instance, there's this theory break up with your girlfriend I'm bored is about a boyfriend she actually was with at that time and said the title jokingly cus she wanted some time for herself to get to know herself better. The video for that song involved a Ariana lookalike actress who was named Ariel (if I remember right) that Ariana gets 'involved' with after she broke up with her girlfriend

I've looked at that interpretation and while it is interesting, I don't agree. Just based on what Ariana's actually said about the song, and by viewing it in the context of the broader album on a very concise track list.
