Awesome review as always, and thank you for the kind words! This song is a ton of fun to play so I’m glad you enjoyed it. Best wishes and see ya for the next one hopefully! Much appreciated!
Awesome to see you commenting on his reaction videos. I knew that when I saw your video that I had to recommend it to him. You are an amazing drummer and I believe anyone with any type of musical taste can enjoy and appreciate your playing. Keep up the awesome work Matt!
I have one drum hero, he's called Mike Portnoy. Since I watched Rick Beato's review of absolomb, I have two...Satellites is the best song ever congrats !
I don't care what anyone else says, Periphery is one of the best bands out there and have been for years now. They only get better with every album and I can safely say they are in my top 5. Between the monstrous Matt, the crazy dynamic range that Mark, Misha, Jake, and Nolly, and the PHENOMENAL range and power that Spencer has. Nobody is like them.
My youngest boy was given a pair of Matt’s drumsticks after a gig of theirs back in ‘18. The drum tech was a super guy for spotting a kid in the very front.
Man, that was some of the best drumming I have ever seen/heard. He also looks so into the music he is playing you kind of get carried away just buy looking at him play. I get the same feeling when watching David Gilmour play guitar solos live.
Polished performance by Matt as we’ve come to expect. Such a relaxed technique and I’m digging that snare tone. Digging the humour also Andrew (your insights aren’t too shabby either lol).
Matt's amazing. Just all that subtlety and nuance. Even his cymbal choices change depending on the mood of the song. He's a master of his craft and periphery is from my state in silverspring,md. Amazing drummer and outstanding guitar playing and bass. The orchestration of thier song structure is impeccable.
Matt is a complete rock drummer. He can do it all, including being a showman from behind the kit. Such tasteful playing all the time. I might have gone to three Periphery shows just to see him play. He was replaced at the last minute in one of the shows, lol, but the other two times I did get to enjoy the magic.
I would love to see your reaction to Matt on early Periphery material when he only used a 3 piece kit (snare, kick, floor tom) Its cool to see the contrast in his playing and stylistic choices on a smaller kit. Totla Mad, Insomnia, The Walk or Icarus Lives are all solid choices to see him in action
You have no idea how much I smiled after I clicked on this and heard that beautiful accent on top of the fact that this is one of my favourite drum playthroughs It's always so nice when I hear an accent from home This gives me the same feeling as me getting someone to watch this - I really dig it!
Had the chance to see the magician live recently. Mind was blown, and left with more respect for his technique and play style. Truly one of the best out there and one that inspires me to want to learn how to play each day.
Yeah, he sure is! There are people in (progressive) metal who play more extreme stuff, faster, more complicated, whatever metric you wanna apply, but Matt has such a sophisticated musical intelligence, he weaves drums into the whole ensemble in a way that I've rarely seen anywhere else. He takes all the notes from pop (let the singer shine, play in service of the song), applies rudiments in so many beautiful ways (especially the flams, I love his flams so much), seasons it with bites out of different percussion styles (like that bossa nova-ish part in Dracul Gras) and still manages to have plenty "wtf did bro just do there" chops moments. And the best of all - he's obviously having the time of his life just playing.
Loving the little intro bits man. ICYMI, this was kind of a huge deal for Matt. His signature Pearl snare was announced with this video, as well as a new Heavyweight Dry snare head he worked on with Evans. The man is a beast in the music business as much as he is behind the kit!
That crash at 3:26 of your video is mesmerizing. Looks like a larger crash, and hanging loose, just fades out beautifully. You gotta air drum that crash every time you listen. Been a Periphery fan forever, for obvious reason. Thanks Matt. Thanks Andrew. Good day.
**extremely Andrew voice**: "Maaaaaann" Halpern's ride swing reminds me so much of old-school Nick Mason. Come at it from all directions and keep it moving!
Uh & these drums sound amazing! I love how it's metal but I can still hear the natural sound of the shell. Thank god someone knows the balance between tuning & compression.
Very nice! Your comments echoed my sentiments. No chops for chops' sake. Everything was played to support the song. His sound is amazing. The left hand ghost notes at the beginning were so clean and precise. Great articulation and clarity in his playing across the dynamic range. A real pleasure to hear. Thanks Andrew.
Such a good vibe on this channel. Love your work. Im getting back into drums after a few years off, and you have got me so hyped about drums again. Thanks!
Matt is unmistakable. No other drummer sounds like him. You should check out "Icarus Lives", that is another properly tasty Matt Halpern groove with lots of quintuplets in it.
10:38 I had the same question when I first saw the video. It looks like a trigger, but since the snare has too much texture for triggers, I imagine it's a sensor for some extra reverb to give the track more ambience
You've earned another sub! I don't think there's a drum playthrough, but if you'd want, check out either Simple Boy or Goliath by Karnivool (or the entire Sound Awake album for that matter). Also one hell of a drummer!
I've been watching this like a lot and not any single thing bored about this kind of your honestest opinions. Thanks for your consideration about my request. There are so many positive vibes since in the first place. I hope this channel gone to great while you are doing very very well. So come on guys why you don't subscribe to Andrew's channel yet? I'd love to see you react to Nic from Northlane, my favourite band too which would be cooler for me aha. But he angles his drums away from him and is also very progressive/polyrhythmic which I think you'd enjoy
Love the reaction, but that background beat in the beginning being the same as "Waiting On The World To Change" by John Mayer is really distracting, I was just humming the song the whole time lol
I do like this guy, but he uses so much cymbal its almost to much for me *shrugs* (by to much cymbal I mean like loads of hits on different ones in the choruses)
Great video and I love the song too, but your outro that almost feels like it's constantly speeding up just a tiny bit is going to give me a heart attack. Not an actual criticism just thought it was funny. Maybe I'm just crazy
Awesome review as always, and thank you for the kind words! This song is a ton of fun to play so I’m glad you enjoyed it. Best wishes and see ya for the next one hopefully! Much appreciated!
You are the best Matt! Thanks for being such a good sport :)
Awesome to see you commenting on his reaction videos. I knew that when I saw your video that I had to recommend it to him. You are an amazing drummer and I believe anyone with any type of musical taste can enjoy and appreciate your playing. Keep up the awesome work Matt!

This is also without a doubt one of the best vocal performances on any Periphery song. Spencer is absolutely filthy on this track.
True, but I wouldn't wanna hear him attempt this live.
i could listen to this song 100 times and still be in awe during the entire the last half of the song
@@lolh4x The dude is a god live. Saw reptile played and it was almost 1 to 1

Sick Periphery track/vocals/drums. 👌
I just love how Matt makes it so obvious how fun and visceral playing the drums is.

100% agree.
It’s pure beauty and the love of his craft. He’s just so proud and happy. We could all be so fuckimg lucky to love what we do
My youngest boy was given a pair of Matt’s drumsticks after a gig of theirs back in ‘18. The drum tech was a super guy for spotting a kid in the very front.
That snare sound is incredible. His touch is beautiful.
I actually laughed out loud at that chicken drum stick dad joke. That was genuinely funny holy shit hahahahaha
Great song to show all sides of Periphery. They are an awesome band!
Woohoo! Thanks for reacting to my PAYPAL pick! I appreciate it dude! Matt is a bad ass drummer. Always enjoyable to watch
Thanks for making this happen 👏🏽
Man, that was some of the best drumming I have ever seen/heard. He also looks so into the music he is playing you kind of get carried away just buy looking at him play. I get the same feeling when watching David Gilmour play guitar solos live.
I’ve met Matt a bunch of times. Great guy and freaking badass on the drums
100%
The Halpern game is awesome to watch when the drummer is that fluid with their movements.
A Matt Halpern in full flight is a glorious sight
Polished performance by Matt as we’ve come to expect. Such a relaxed technique and I’m digging that snare tone. Digging the humour also Andrew (your insights aren’t too shabby either lol).

I love how this is reviewed, no stopping the song every 2 seconds. He gives his opinions as the song plays. Well done.
Matt is a complete rock drummer. He can do it all, including being a showman from behind the kit. Such tasteful playing all the time. I might have gone to three Periphery shows just to see him play. Matt Halpern, 66Samus, and Alex Rudinger got me into watching drum playthroughs.
Same here lol

My gosh, the sound of the cymbals!! Note density and texture are awesome. The tone of the ride is so dry and clean!

Such a smooth flow with his playing. And headphones are definitely a must for this listen. Great reaction. Matt, you're a beast!
Matt Halpern is a ninja...of this I am convinced. A drum ninja.
**extremely Andrew voice**: "Maaaaaann"
Halpern's ride swing reminds me so much of old-school Nick Mason. Come at it from all directions and keep it moving!
Matt's dynamics in this video are just amazing!
Matt’s ear and vocabulary is just too good!

Loving that snare sound, hell the whole kit sounds amazing.
Oh nice! Was hoping you would cover this one. I see Halpern, I click.
He definitely creates a wall of sound all by himself.

For those loving the snare sound, Matt recently released his own Pearl snare drum which is what he is using in this video.
you really need to watch his performance of "The way the news goes" from the Meinl performance
Hes just so good.
So inspiring .. thank you so much Andrew! Love your channel man..
Another GREAT video..thanks so much!
His video for "22 Faces" is soooo good, man..
god, he's such a joy to watch
Something you'll probably be interested in, that snare is his new Pearl signature snare!

I think its a Snare Weight :) its basically an adjustable drum dampener.

Aside from the stellar jokes at the beginning 😂😂
I can’t tell for certain but the hi hats and ride look like Sand Hats? And the Sand Ride I thiiiiink
Ah yup. That'd make sense bro!
Super dry and very quiet when I jammed on them a few years ago. Sound great with mics!
After watching, I anxiously await your Dracul Gras reaction.
Ridiculously tasty, great dynamics and fantastic feel. It gets a little bit busy for me in parts but that's his style.
Don’t think I’ve seen you react to any of Mike Mangini’s drumming but the man is incredible.
Trigger on the snare & floor tom really add depth.
The drum sound is amazing! Such a powerful drummer. I think the continuous cymbal crashing is distracting though.
Beatiful

To take over for Travis you better be top notch.
