This is also without a doubt one of the best vocal performances on any Periphery song. Spencer is absolutely filthy on this track.

I don't care what anyone else says, Periphery is one of the best bands out there and have been for years now. They only get better with every album and I can safely say they are in my top 5. Between the monstrous Matt, the crazy dynamic range that Mark, Misha, Jake, and Nolly, and the PHENOMENAL range and power that Spencer has. Nobody is like them.

My youngest boy was given a pair of Matt’s drumsticks after a gig of theirs back in ‘18. The drum tech was a super guy for spotting a kid in the very front.

Man, that was some of the best drumming I have ever seen/heard. He also looks so into the music he is playing you kind of get carried away just buy looking at him play. I get the same feeling when watching David Gilmour play guitar solos live.

Matt is a complete rock drummer. He can do it all, including being a showman from behind the kit. Such tasteful playing all the time. I might have gone to three Periphery shows just to see him play. He was replaced at the last minute in one of the shows, lol, but the other two times I did get to enjoy the magic.
Polished performance by Matt as we’ve come to expect. Such a relaxed technique and I’m digging that snare tone. Digging the humour also Andrew (your insights aren’t too shabby either lol).

I would love to see your reaction to Matt on early Periphery material when he only used a 3 piece kit (snare, kick, floor tom)
Its cool to see the contrast in his playing and stylistic choices on a smaller kit.
Totla Mad, Insomnia, The Walk or Icarus Lives are all solid choices to see him in action
Matt's amazing. Just all that subtlety and nuance. Even his cymbal choices change depending on the mood of the song. He's a master of his craft and periphery is from my state in silverspring,md. Amazing drummer and outstanding guitar playing and bass. The orchestration of thier song structure is impeccable.

Uh & these drums sound amazing! I love how it's metal but I can still hear the natural sound of the shell. Thank god someone knows the balance between tuning & compression.

Loving the little intro bits man. ICYMI, this was kind of a huge deal for Matt. His signature Pearl snare was announced with this video, as well as a new Heavyweight Dry snare head he worked on with Evans. The man is a beast in the music business as much as he is behind the kit!
Had the chance to see the magician live recently. Mind was blown, and left with more respect for his technique and play style. Truly one of the best out there and one that inspires me to want to learn how to play each day.

For those loving the snare sound, Matt recently released his own Pearl snare drum which is what he is using in this video.

Yeah, he sure is! There are people in (progressive) metal who play more extreme stuff, faster, more complicated, whatever metric you wanna apply, but Matt has such a sophisticated musical intelligence, he weaves drums into the whole ensemble in a way that I've rarely seen anywhere else.
He takes all the notes from pop (let the singer shine, play in service of the song), applies rudiments in so many beautiful ways (especially the flams, I love his flams so much), seasons it with bites out of different percussion styles (like that bossa nova-ish part in Dracul Gras) and still manages to have plenty "wtf did bro just do there" chops moments. And the best of all - he's obviously having the time of his life just playing.
So inspiring .. thank you so much Andrew! Love your channel man..

Matt is unmistakable. No other drummer sounds like him. You should check out "Icarus Lives", that is another properly tasty Matt Halpern groove with lots of quintuplets in it.

Ridiculously tasty, great dynamics and fantastic feel. It gets a little bit busy for me in parts but that's his style.
10:38 I had the same question when I first saw the video. It looks like a trigger, but since the snare has too much texture for triggers, I imagine it's a sensor for some extra reverb to give the track more ambience
I think its a Snare Weight :) its basically an adjustable drum dampener.
