- I purchase quite a few broken or malfunctioning consoles and repair/modify them in my spare time for fun and for the learning experience. I've done this with more consoles and devices than I've kept track of and thought it would be neat to record this! In comes the series "Let's Repair!" which will consist of me on occasion purchasing an untested or broken device and doing a free form video of myself reviving it and doing whatever else I feel like trying.

another great watch, love tsoped xboxs and 128mb moding them, its alot of fun, finding a large pata or sata conector that works was a thing but it worked out.
adding a cpu socket was also a nifty mod.
chamelion chip booted with cromwell and evox m8, short the tsop points, boot to slayer or hexens disc, install the softmod (if you dont feel like going through the provess to add a disable switch) remove chip reboot into evox, flash whatever matches your xbox tsop size unless you setup a bank switch.

Found the issue, Maxtor drive.

+MrMario2011 Out of HS ran a computer repair company. For IDE Maxtor had the worst, WD was second.
I tried to put in a maxtor drive and got error 13. Yay this isn't funny!
I'm assuming it's new old stock? Maxtor was the worst brand you could purchase. Also, you really shouldn't be touching the PCB.
I worked at a data recovery biz back in summer 07. So much Maxtor, it was like a 80/20 ratio. They were so so bad.

Hey there, i have a og xbox 1.4 and is tsop'd with evo x bios (not sure what version as it says unknown bios). i have evoloution x dashboard v+3935 but if i leave it unplugged for awhile it will auto set the time to 2002. I also still have access to the ms dashboard. i heard evo x m8+ has the clock patch, is that what i have?. And am i ok to remove the clock capacitor if its auto setting the time to 2002?

That damn clock capacitor is the thing I've always hated of the original xbox. If that thing leaks and you are not aware of it, your xbox is toast.
If you have V1.6 or 1.6 b you're lucky. That's the version of my system.
1.6 and 1.6b are the only versions that have a chip with the original Xbox logo printed on it.

Man, I failed TSOP flash on mine, the video settings were bamboozeld to a point wich the screen was pich black, but i used muscle memory and Hexen to re-flash TSOP "blind-folded" xDDDD Nice Vid Mario

i stuck on error 05 but mine soft modded without any chip, i accidentally use some software and i click one option says do you want to unlock the HDD i hit yes and now shows error 05, is there any way to fix it without using any chip-mode?
question, since its TSOP'd I assume the error drive isn't locked. could you plug it into your computer, have it come up as unallocated, initialize the drive, format it, wipe it, than reformat it and try the clone again? would that possibly fix the errors on the disc? just an idea...

Ughhhhhh those Thompson drives are a bane! I had a Thompson drive back when i had an Xbox and a friend gave me a Samsung drive. Needless to say that the Thompcrap drive was quickly removed for the Samsung drive

It's strange that there are two type of error screens the one that show the screen you had and the one that says "oops something went wrong" and explain the erros how do people get that screen it looks awesome for being an error?
I Softmodded my original xbox successfully, but after a couple of days my younger brother tried to connect to xbox live(for some stupid reason) and now the softmod doesn't open and goes straight to the MSdashboard the console still works but i cant softmodded again when i load the save on spinter cell the games just restarts. what should i do ?

Just a note, when you select "full disk byte by byte" in chimp you actually have to click in the right thumbstick in order to select it, pressing A just advances to the next menu screen. Just fyi dude if you're going to be doing this on multiple xbox's.

Just a small correction. That gray bag is called a static shielding bag, and the item is protected only if you put it inside.
Also static is an issue only if you're dealing with exposed chips (like doing motherboard repair) and in a dry environment (say < 50% humidity).

Hi I have a v1.1-1.5 console (uncertain of exactly which but definitely 1 of those) with a win bond chip that has a mod chip installed and has no evidence of the tsop flashing bridges but when I remove the mod chip it FRAG's even when I have installed the softmod I want to tsop this console but I can't remove the mod chip what can I do?
+William Lowry Why are you trying to downgrade your modification? A modchip is better than A TSOP flash.
Anyways it might be the hard drive in your system. If it was replaced it could still be unlocked, only locked drives work with softmodded systems.
MrMario2011 I have a 1.6 console that I want to put the chip in from this console and I have locked the drive I've tried installing the softmod then powering it on and waiting for the bios to load and taking the chip out and then trying to tsop I've tried another hdd I've Tried pretty much everything I could think of it really seems as though it's had a bad tsop flash and so it had a chip put in but there no evidence whatsoever of the tsop bridges before I did them
just an FYI it's possible to bridge the points of a TSOP without having to solder them. amateurs who dont like to solder will do silly things like use their fingers to hold a wire down on top of the points. Winbond is a two step process to flash, erase and then flash. they may have just tried to straight flash it and that wouldnt work, then they'd need a mod chip to fix
also pull the sticker off the fan and put a few drops of lubricating oil in.
Also, I do happen to have a random 400 GB or something around that IDE drive gathering dust in a enclosure that I lost the power cord to. But we need to keep that address private, so yeah. not sure what to say now.

How do i fix a softmodded xbox 1.6
Today I got a rev 1.6 xbox with a dead seagate hard drive, It just ticks and does nothing. I tried to boot a game up but still refuses to do anything. Is there a way that I can replace the original hard drive? I'm not sure if it's modded or not but since in my country piracy has always been an issue, I'm almost certain that it is. It would be a shame to see that console die for something this stupid.

This system wasn't softmodded, and you're not doing anything if the hard drive itself has gone bust, as demonstrated in this video. 😁
I get error 21 when i launch xbox live and now when i turn on my xbox it wont launch into the custom firmware just the original dashboard. Do i need to softmod it again??

heXen disc can take up to 2 minutes to boot, as long as the ring stays red you should give it time. You didnt wait nearly long enough before ejecting. The fact that it says "Linux" instead of "Microsoft" means it is actually working, it recognized the disc and is reading it.

No 80 pin IDE cable? (I just did my Xbox yesterday) I was told the 80 pin can make the system access the drives faster. Not sure how true it is but I will say this it felt easier to work with (the cable I used was a good quality Asus branded one)
I myself didn't notice a difference, many others haven't and claim that it's a placebo effect, but we'd need to do some proper head-to-head comparisons to verify that. I only upgrade the IDE cable if I'm going to SATA.
yeah it might be placebo the difficulty is that larger capacity drives are going to be faster because the data is physically closer... Like 7200 RPM on a 10GB drive has to spin X times to read data where a 100GB drive only has to spin 1/10th the same distance... if that makes sense lol So I suspect some of the difference people probably notice is from that aspect and maybe not the cable so much. I put one in because it looked cool and I had it laying around doing nothing lol
Edit: Also I love your video's :) I swear I am addicted to modding stuff... I do the mod I load up like 200 games on things then I play like 5 of them for like 10 minutes then I never touch it again. I guess it's the puzzle aspect I like lol

I truly don't understand the fascination of putting a SSD into something that tops out at IDE speeds, even with an IDE to SATA adapter.
MrMario2011 you would be the person to ask this for sure, I have a modded original Xbox of course (love it) and I recently got some 360's (waiting for tools to open them in the mail) could I use my original Xbox to power the DVD drive to flash the drive and not trigger the 360's ban thing for booting it with no DVD drive? I hope that convoluted sentence made some sort of sense...
I can't find anything online about doing that, other than people mentioning it's the same type of connector. That doesn't mean electrically compatible though.

I don't see a reason why you couldn't, although banning for not having the DVD drive plugged in has not been a thing for years. It might have even been an urban legend in the modding community, all I can tell you though is since I've been doing this I've never seen anyone with a system ban for that.
Ohh if nothing to worry about then I wont worry :) thank you!!! Ironically another 360 arrived today and it works but sounds like the hard drive or a fan is vibrating. So need to take a look at that when I get my open tool thingy. I went from 0 360's to 5 when the last one arrives. but so far 3 working PSU's and one of the PSU's is for a Jasper and I don't have a Jasper yet. So fun :)
Edit: Ironically I think I am most excited about the RROD one, I plan on starting with it first. See if I can fix it or break it.. Either way will be fun to play with :)

No NO NO NO NO , each Motherboard has a KEY that will unlock your hard drive... I suppose if you get your key and lock you drive with it , then it would work.. I haven't modded xbox-0 for a few years though, soo///
No need to install softmod from HEXEN as it's TSOP'd so just install dashboard and apps ! did you format G: partition for the extra missing space or just a BIOS that supports all addidtional space on F:

Maxtor HDDs are on my shitlist of HDD brands. I always had bad luck with those drives because they always died or failed at random (like your Maxtor did)

that sucks when that happens i had hard drive died just in 6 months
So many things you don't know about the original xbox and its mods. First off you don't need to remove those front two screws on ether side of the dvd drive. Only that one screw thats on the top under the ribbon cable needs to be removed if your only taking out the hard drive. 2nd if you just got a copy of slayers and done the reformat and what not without even opening the xbox. if it boots it that is. And also its known that yes they do read them but more often then not all the xbox dvd drives even the better Samsung ones has problems and doesn't really like reading those mini disks.
I'm not sure why I've had to explain the hard drive issue so many times. The hard drive was physically faulty and dead, I tried every recovery disc I had and none went past the Xbox screen because a working drive is still required.
That's why I also showed myself formatting it with my PC to be sure it was the faulty drive and not the Xbox wigging out. It worked just fine and booted a recovery disc as soon as I put in an unformatted, working drive.

That's true for the Xbox 360, not the OG Xbox. Once you mod the console you can pop in out of region games.

At 4m03s into the video, HeXEn had started because you see the word "Linux" under the X logo; otherwise, it would show "Microsoft" with the EvoX BIOS flashed to TSOP. HeXEn takes about 45 seconds to a minute before the screen changes to show the menu. You ejected the disc after 21s. In 25-40s, HeXEn's menu would have been displayed. A slow starter it is!
If the Xbox is unplugged too long, >4hours with a good clock cap, the Xbox upon power on wants to set the time/date. Error 16 because the Xbox could not read the file it wants to run from the HDD to set the clock.
I left it for much longer off camera before I made the video, it never started.
Only place to get 'Linux' from is by reading it off the HeXEn disk, default.xbe started but was not able to continue with the faulty HDD.. When I boot HeXEn with Evox BIOS it too shows LiNUX under the X logo. And, finally a minute later HeXEn's menu is presented. This being the 2017 update that wasn't out when the video was made. You were able to fix it by replacing the bad HDD with a new one . It all worked out eventually. :) I just know the time to HeXEN's menu being displayed takes FOREVER and one thinks it is stuck.
O the original xbox a great game system one of the first if not the first game system to have a built in hard drive had a nice long legacy but if its so great WHY THE HELL IS IT NOT WORKING LOL this had me laughing so hard I was crying LOL XD

At least a XBOX original is not super difficult like a Playstation 2 to take apart and put back together again. You need to be a black belt in origami with the latter.

When you see this error most of the times you have flashed something wrong. Or you dropped solder on your eeprom chips.
[bold]4 - bootldr - Ram check failed[/bold]
Your Xbox ram chips are wasted.
Maybe you dropped a little solder on it (try to remove it CAREFULLY!). Note, if they are fried, removing solder won't fix them). Maybe you were static when you touched the ram chips. They are kind off sensitive. If they are, they are fried, sell your xbox for spare parts.
[bold]5 - kernel - HDD not locked[/bold] (The retail xbox bioses require the hd to be locked)
When you upgrade your hard disk drive for one that is larger, you most of the times use a new hard drive that you bought in the shop. Now, when you put this hdd in your xbox and you try to boot up with your chip off. It gives you error 5. Why you ask? Well i will try to explain it simple.
The original (also called "Retail") hard drive is locked by MS. Why did they lock the harddrive?
Well if it wasn't it wouldve been more than easy (in the start of xbox hacking)
for hackers to change content on it. Thats why MS locks it. It is just a security measure.
This locking proces uses information thats on the motherboard. The "Lock" on a xbox hard drive contains information that is based on the harddrive itself and the motherboard it came with.
One thing that makes this clear: You can not change a retail harddrive with another one from an other not modded xbox. With every xbox there is only ONE i repeat ONE compatible harddisk drive. That is, if they are locked.
If you don't mod your xbox (tsop or modchips) you can not change harddrives. Not even from another xbox. However when your xbox IS modified you can change your harddisk for almost every other harddisk (thats UNLOCKED). This means that even when your xbox is modified, you can not just put another (retail) XBOX harddisk in your xbox. However some smart people made programs that can lock or unlock your xbox harddisk on the fly.
So when does the error occur? The only time this error should occur is when you boot up your xbox in original mode AND you have a harddisk in your xbox that is not yet locked. So now you ask what do i have to do to make your xbox work again?
Well the answer is pretty easy. Boot up your xbox with the chip on. Preferably with a slayer evo-x cd. Now you choose "Eeprom management." Than you choose: "Lock hdd." It takes one second. After its ready it should say something like "Done"
When it is "Done" just turn off your xbox. Disable your chip and try to boot in original mode. Now there should be no more error 5.
[bold]6 - kernel - Cannot unlock HDD[/bold]
If you understand the above, you should be able to understand what this means. It means you are trying to boot up the xbox with an harddisk that is locked in combination with ANOTHER motherboard than you are using it with right now.
What can i do about it, you ask? Well place the harddisk back in the xbox where it came from. After that, UNLOCK the harddisk with the same procedure i explained above (see error 5). Now when the harddisk is UNLOCKED, put it in the xbox which gave you the error. Now when you boot up with the chip ON it should not give you an error anymore.
However when you put the xbox on with the chip OFF your xbox will give you an error. (error 5) So to make sure you can boot original and boot with the chip ON. Next do the same as above: "Boot up your xbox with the chip on. Preferrably with a slayer evo-x cd. Now you choose "Eeprom management." Than you choose: "Lock hdd." It takes one second. After its ready it should say something like "Done"
When it is ready just turn off your xbox. Disable your chip and try to boot original. Now there should be no more error.
[bold]7 - kernel - HDD timeout[/bold]
Most of the times, the IDE cable is not properly connected when you see this error. Please reattach the ide cable. Not only to the harddisk drive but also to the dvd drive. ALso try to reconnect the ide cable to the motherboard.
Press pretty hard so it goes all the way in. Make sure it is seated straight and proper in the drives and the motherboard. If you still have an error 7. Try another ide cable. If that won't work try another harddisk. If there is still no go, try to set the jumpers on the rearside of the harddisk drive. Set it to master or cable select. If still no succes, good luck and sell your xbox to me rolleyes.gif
[bold]8 - kernel - No HDD found[/bold]
Please make sure your xbox hdd is attached properly. Most of the times the Ide cable came loose, or isn't seated properly in the IDE port of your harddisk. ALso make sure the power supply cables are intact and working.
Make sure the ide cable is also connected properly to the rest of the hardware (dvd and motherboard).
[bold]9 - kernel - HDD parameters[/bold] (PIO/DMA/or size {debug}, certain size minimum is required for debug)
Not very common error, please try another harddisk.
[bold]10 - kernel - DVD timeout[/bold]
Actually its almost the same as error 6/7/8. But also make sure the yellow cables are properly connected to the motherboard and the dvd drive.
1. Make sure ide cables are connected good.
2. Make sure the yellow cables are good and properly connected.
3. Still no succes? Try another dvd drive of which you are sure it is working.
[bold]11 - kernel - No DVD Found[/bold]
Same as #10 So read up please!
[bold]12 - kernel - DVD parameters (PIO/DMA)[/bold]
Same as #10, only not very common.
[bold]13 - kernel - Dashboard launch fail[/bold] (due to missing/bad key, or anything else that would prevent it from running) and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed.
The error it gives is because of the incompatibility between the (older) dashboard (4920) that older slayer cd installs and the new dashboard/kernel versions found in some new xbox's and found in xbox's that have been connected to xbox live (when you go on xbox-live, it'll upgrade your dashboard file to i believe it is now 5659.03. This dasboard is incompatible with the dash that (old) slayer cd installs (for example 2.5 or lower) for you.
(In detail, in the eeprom chip there is a kernel which is incompatible with the dashboard (4920) that slayer installs.)
So what do you do to fix it? You can use the dashupdate found on most new xbox games! Be sure to 1st unplug your ethernet cable before you do so!!!
Besides that, just use a good installation disc and all is fine. Use a 2.6 slayer or something similar
[bold]14 - dashboard - Error loading dashboard[/bold] (dashboard generic error)
Same thing as above (error 13). This time it is also a little mistake from you on changing names or having played around with files on the xbox harddisk. Error 14 is most often because you changed boot orders or names of startup files on the harddisk. It can also happen when you are rebuilding your xbox harddisk with a slayer cd and the power was cut.
[bold]16 - dashboard - Clock cannot be set.[/bold]
Basically it comes down to this. Error 16 has to do with not finding the menu setting with which you can set the clock of the hdd. This happens to a lot of people that erase their hdd (original/upgraded) or MS dashboard files and after that they don't immediatly install the hdd but leave the xbox without power longer than 5 hours.
It's all about the hdd can't find the menu with which it can set the clock. This is mostly because the xbox hdd is empty (you removed dashboard or fux0red it via ftp). The problem arises when xbox searches for menu to set clock with, can't find it and voila: error 16. Well read on please!
So you have an error 16 huh? Don't worry "nothing" is broken!
You have an xbox hdd that is locked. And normally you can boot in original and modded mode. Retail or upgraded doesn't matter. You start playing around with xboxdash.xbe etc. using ftp programs. While doing this you "accidently" remove your MS dashboard and also your alternate dashboard (Evox, etc.) so there is no dash anymore on the xbox hdd.
You end the ftp session and after that you shut off your xbox. Normally when you would start up again it gives you an error 13/14 ( no dashboard found). No worries with a slayer Evox cd (and a hardmod), all is ok. BUT this is only WITHIN 3 hours or so.
This is because the internal clock of the xbox will only be kept alive by the capacitors for only 3 or 4 hours. So when you leave your xbox unplugged from electricity for over 5 hours after you have played with the .xbe's AND you have removed your (ms and evo-x) dash from your xbox than you are fux0red. Why do you ask?
Why can't I boot from disc?
Its as follows Xbox starts booting==> (almost 1st thing a xbox does is) searches for internal clock==> doesnt find internal clock because there hasn't been any electricity on the xbox for 5 hours so battery that kept clock alive is empty and clock is gone==> searches for the proper dashboard menu to set clock with ==> doesnt find msdashboard or evo-x dashboard menu becuz you have removed it from the hdd for whatever reasons you had==> xbox gives error 16: cannot set clock.
So what do you do about it? Two options!
1. There are some bios'es around that allow the chip to boot past the clocksetting. (do a search!). So how do you get that bios on your chip because you cant boot to a flash program or something? Well you need to have an external flasher.
It seems the m8 bios will take care for you of booting past the clocksetting. Or use the latest Xecutor bios
2. This is the more easy and newbie friendly strategy
-Get a friend with a modded xbox.
-Unlock his hdd with eeprom management from a slayer evo-x cd.
-Than, place his hdd in your xbox.
-Boot with your chip on.
-Now the xbox DOES find a dashboard when you boot in original mode and you can set the time in the msdashboard clock settings.
-Shut off xbox and remove your friends hdd
-PLace his hdd back in his xbox and lock it again
-Install your hdd
-(clock is fucked

This error says that the machine was booted to display a error, basically someone told the machine to reboot (or launch a xbe) with this flag, and the error code just means its been rebooted by the flag
This occurs frequently when the xbox is unable to boot due to dashboard changes being made (ie Gcue true blue hasnt been resigned, parts of the stock dash are missing - incomplete FTP backups copied to a new HDD for example).

Lesson learned: Don't trust Maxtor hard disks for amything important. Those things blow balls.
just an FYI for people viewing this - most of the time your error 16 is not going to be hardware failure, most of the time it's going to be dash failure. There are multiple ways to check and fix this.
In re: the Thompson drive, while it isn't my favourite at all, it's been crapped on for a long time without a lot to back it up. Hexen is a very large and complex disk and it will run slow and/or fail to load on any DVD drive. Also for most viewers if you are not running Evox you will need to change the name of Hexen's launch default.xbe to rescue.xbe.
rather than trying to do a clone of the drive (which is fine) it's just as easy to get to the dashboard with Hexen sitting in the tray but not launched, swap the IDE cable with the new hard drive from the old hard drive, and then launch Hexen. it'll pick up the new hard drive and let you re-do it. In this case that wouldnt have helped since it was hardware failure.
a lot of odd things were mentioned in this that made no sense or weren't applicable e.g.: formatting the drive before putting it into the xbox (formatting for the xbox would have just re-done the format anyway) saying "I might have to put it all on C" doesn't make sense as the C E XYZ drives have a hard limit set on each, which is why F and G are used. since it is TSOP flashed, you could have booted to do chimp without anything being connected to the DVD drive and it would have (should have) been fine. If you receive any xbox error code the likelihood of the TSOP being shot is almost 0, outside of error 21.
Thanks for the insight, on formatting it outside of the Xbox I did that mainly to make sure the hard drive picked up and worked properly before slapping it into the console. I do that with most of my drives before putting them to use on any platform.
well i had the oldest maxtor IDE in history it was used on upgraded PCs to win XP lol thats so old just think about it 95 ME 3.1 nah thts too old and the secret behind windows is that windows isnt an operationg system it is AN ADDON FOR MSDOS JUST A DAMN GUI UI INTERFACE FOR DAMN USERS (UI USER INTERFACE GET THE JOKE HAHAHAA)

In my experience so far, this has been the only one! I'm blaming Maxtor.
@@MrMario2011 also if you prefer, most sata to ide converters will work if you use an 80 wire ide cable.
I love the XBOX but God almighty half the time they screw up get damaged easily error messages, not to mention the wiring inside that thing is a B-I-T-C-H to do.
