Error 16 means "clock can not be set". This is often caused by corrupted or missing dashboard files. It may be the result of a failed softmod.
I acquired this Xbox that had been discarded. I was completely unfamiliar with the Xbox. I have never owned one. It had this cryptic error 16. Fortunately several smart people have figured this problem out and shared with the rest of us.
The hardest thing about working on the Xbox is "disk locking". The disk drive in the Xbox is "locked" when it powers down. If the drive is removed from the Xbox and placed in a PC, it can not be accessed. There is key number stored in the Xbox BIOS that is needed to unlock it. Normally the key number must be used to unlock the drive. If the key is not known, one trick to access the disk drive is "hot swapping".
Hot swap: When the Xbox is turned on, the BIOS applies the key and unlocks the disk drive. As long as the drive remains powered up, it will stay unlocked. The trick is to pull the IDE data cable from the Xbox disk drive while it is running and then connect the Xbox drive to an external PC IDE cable. The PC must be turned on ahead of time, but the boot up must be halted before the PC Bios searches for attached peripherals. After the PC is connected to the Xbox drive, the PC is un-halted and completes the boots up.
The PC is booted with a Linux boot CD which contains a program call Xbox HD Maker (XBOXHDM). XBOXHDM can perform several functions, including rebuilding a damaged C partition or creating an entire Xbox disk drive.

The Xbox key can be obtained directly from the system board. It is possible to connect the serial port of an external PC to an Xbox system board with a cable and extract the Bios. Excellent Instructional videos on how to make and use the cable were posted by Slot1Gamer.

I ran into this problem about 12 years ago. I could never get the hot swap to method to work, I was missing a pivotal step. I never thought to hit the pause/break key! Of course, there was no video on the topic back then and I was 14, I didn't understand anything about the pause/break key then. Thank you so much this video.

Dude! I never knew that unplugging the DVD drive would stop the XBOX in unlocked state. That makes the hotswap a lot easier. The way I used to do it was I would unplug the IDE at the moment the microsoft logo appeared below the xbox logo. The timing had to be perfect though, otherwise the PC couldn't find the XBOXHD. Thanks for teaching the method!

thank you it worked with a older PC perfectly .. first i had to set in the bios boot from CDrom,A,C and then disconect the DVD in the xbox and starup the xbox then power up the PC and push the pause/break key disconect the hdd from the xbox and conect the pc then hit enter i follow the steps to the letter and it worked .. thanks a lot .. i messed up may xbox by deleting the files but befor i could put back the softmod files the hole thing freezedup.. i thout i lost my xbox but did keep it .. then i saw your video and tryed it.. and it works :) :)

So, if am understanding this correctly, if you have an error 16 and it is softmodded, you have to basically create a new disk using XBHDM meaning everything on the previous drive is lost because it's locked. I have two Xbox's that are softmodded and both are giving me er 16. I need the files on the one Xbox as it has so many games on it that you can no longer get.
My knowledge on these Xboxes and softmodding them in general as slipped as it's been many years since I've used them.
Error 16 probably indicates the dash files on the "C" partition are corrupted. Using XBOXHDM, you need to rebuild only the "C" partition. Leave the other partitions alone. Games are usually backup up on the "F" partition and they should survive intact.

I got almost all the way to the finish line, and computer boots into XboxHDM from the DVD fine, but when I do the hotswap, it refuses to boot. Am I doing something wrong?
Isn't there like a disc that you can use to force boot?
So you can have the Xbox on and functional from that disc and that lets you get the files on it
Cause I did a Linux and deleted the Xbox off the Xbox
hello i tried to softmod my xbox and error 16 appears now. i have the backup files . is there any way to use them?
oh, I tried I really tried but everytime is getting worse, sometimes it can detect de xbox hdd, sometimes I can access the C partition but can not write the files, now my xbox definitely is broken, I get error 16 and nothing more, before it swaped between error 16 and glitchy original dashboard which also froze trying to read the game disc.
Now only shows error 16.

@@mihaialexandrulungu2681 thanks but the hdd seems to be broken, I tried other method using xbox pc hotswap and the program 360xplorer but the program at first game me an cluster error and later tries simply couldn't detect the hdd, though the pc does, anyway gotta try to make an eeprom reader to fix my xbox someday. by the way the error I get is 13 everytime I turn on my xbox.
@@aspinia buy a cheap wd caviar black 320gb. then use that hdd with your xbox. the steps are simple.

Because you finished doing the disc then all of a sudden you had the xbox opened up plugged into a pc (the editing confused me)
Its not clear if you have to do the hotswap and the iso disc

So I unplugged my disk drive to get an error 11 which I assume is the same as 12, and with the Xbox screen still on that error I switch the hdd to be plugged into my PC master cable. (This pc does have sata but it’s unplugged) I turn the pc on with the Xbox hdd plugged in instead of pause break and then plugging it in. It boots into the Xbox hd maker, and I press 1, which stops at a blank screen. If I retry and press 2 that works fine. I typed out that Xboxhd command and it said it couldn’t be found on the master. This is weird to me because in the boot menu the drive is shown as the 6.5 drive that it is. (Is it necessary to pausebreak and does 2 do anything different from 1?) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Cant you disconnect all the sata cables and make the ide cable work that way? Maybe having to change settings in pc bios.

Hi. I know that this video is 2 years old now and I'm not expecting a response, but I unfortunately don't have access to any older IDE primarily based PCs. Is there any way a SATA to IDE converter that is the correct pin size for the hard drive would work for this or am i stuck?

I have a error 16 on my modded original xbox will this Hot swap work ? I mean will I be able to play the games installed on the hard drive ? Or will the hot swap only allow me to play disc games ?
I deleted my E partition like the dufus I am. Is there a way for me to get back to any dashboard or load an unlicensed disc?

Damn! I was looking for a way to replace the Xbox hard drive without modding the system! I want to prolong the life of my console! Isn’t there a way to make a perfect copy of the hard drive, including the ID code? Which hard drive should I buy as a replacement and where can I buy it?
The XBOXHDM program lets you copy Xbox disc drives, including the key. I copied my 8GB original to a 160 GB Western Digital IDE drive. You can also use a SATA drive with an adapter. Because the XBOX uses the FAT32 system, you are limiter to 2GB. How ever, if you are going to run games off the disc drive, you will need to mod the XBOX. Either soft or hard mod work. If you hard mod it, you can get rid of disc locking.

Correct, the computer hard drive is normally connected to the primary master. How ever, in this case the computer is booting from the CD only and bypassing the computer hard drive. By switching cables before the BIOS looks for the hard drive, the BIOS thinks the XBOX hard drive is the computer hard drive.

Is the softmod still good like it'll do everything still
The softmod works and you can back up games on the HD, but if you want to eliminate disc locking, you will need to do a hardware mode and install custom firmware. I have done it both ways.

i have been working a week on my xbox that i salvaged, i thought the harddrive in it was dead cause a computer wouldn't even see it, i realized it was locked now i followed everything down to pulling eeprom info off the chip and storing the bin in eeprom folder got the new c and e folders but when i made iso from mkisofs.bat it made a small 185MB iso not 400~ something like yours i had to boot up an old motherboard with it and it wrote the files to the new harddrive from scratch. i then made a bootable floppy ran the lockhd.bat and put the new drive in xbox but still get error 16 im at a loss at this point i was finally able to get the original harddrive which is barely 10GB however everytime i power up i have to input the time & date,,, I am not sure if softmoding it will even work if i cant get any other harddrive in it to work. do you have any advise?
1. The original HD is only 8 GB. The main reason for modding is to put in a bigger one.
2. You are losing time/date because your memory capacitor is bad. The XBOX does not use a memory battery, it uses a memory capacitor. This capacitor goes bad in all of them. There are several videos on UA-cam that tell you have to replace the memory cap. Even when the cap is good, it only holds charge for approx 3 hrs.
3. Did you copy the C and E files from the "C and E" download into the C and E directories of xbox maker before making the ISO?
Zettu install mod chip. $4 from AliExpress super simple install and your box will boot past the errors into the chip bios.

The hard drive in the Xbox is only an 8 GB IDE drive. It is probably too small to be of any real use.

My god could you speak and slower? I had to watch at 2x speed and even then half the video can be removed and nothing will change.
