“Old” Hodinkee is so refreshing these days! It is different from what you get from “new” Hodinkee or any other watches channel. It is just RIGHT. Hopefully Ben will see the light again soon.
Sounds kind of nuts, but I’m not sure Ben cares too much about hodinkee’s trajectory. He’s often said that it’s great that it can pay the bills, but for him it’s all about the watches. Hodinkee was the writing project he used to get into Columbia and It’s like it outgrew his purpose for it. It made him a titan in the industry, but his focus is the watches not the business, which is his prerogative I guess. I personally feel the loss of Jack Forster very keenly. His charismatic, passionate, humorous and deeply intellectual approach to watch talk is hard to replicate
The Hodonkey is still good in some respects, but its marketing is clearly directed at Millenials and even Gen Z’s. They’ve lost their original direction and think that they will adapt to the market that best suits them. Watch journalism site to watch retail site. Unfortunately, they’ve abandoned many of those that started their site.
@@alexspink4325 I have no idea what Ben ambitions are. But I do get the sense that he believes the current path Hodinkee is following is the right one from a business perspective. I have my doubts but he may be right. He has a track record of great success after all. Personally, I identify with the Hodinkee content less and less. But it is really about personal taste in the end of the day.
@@rodrigorios3271 Yes I agree on all counts. I’d say he thinks he’s doing what’s best commercially, and perhaps he is. Certainly Hodinkee is a bigger corporate entity than it’s ever been. Really enjoyed this video. I hate to be one of those "new hodinkee vs old hodinkee" people but this really felt like a return to form for A Week On The Wrist that I haven't seen in a while. Great job James!
When it comes to sports watches nobody does A Week On The Wrist better than James Stacey and Cole Pennington. It's a breath of fresh air to see James back here talking substance and not just munching on a burger like that other dude with a stache.
Is nice to see some of the old Hodinkee still is alive ... just matter of time he also will go ... since Jack left I barely see or read any Hodinkee. I miss the old good days when they were doing the Friday Live show☹️
Hearing James do this review was nostalgic Hodinkee. It was like putting on an old watch. It reminded me of his review of the Tudor Black Bay GMT in San Francisco and the Rolex Explorer in New York. I miss those reviews taking the wrist watches out in the field with camera in hand. This brought back that memory. James is still the legend!
I have one of those older 2-line titaniium Pelagos, and your comment about it being so stoic it is almost boring is pretty on point. It is my most valuable piece but it gets very little comment when i wear it. Very unassuming, but a favorite in my collection.
I went to an amazing jeweler recently and tried on some incredible watches. The Tudor Pelagos 39 was the watch I tried on and just instantly thought "yes, this is the one." It's light, comfortable, perfectly proportioned (in my opinion), and just hits all the right notes for an everyday wear, no non sense kind of watch. It's one of those watches you really don't "get" fully until you try it on. Can't wait to pick one up when I have the cash.
Can always rely on this man to encapsulate watches that are right up my alley. A well put together production outlining what seems to be one of the most perfect watches released in the last few years (in my eyes). Well done, James!
thank you for reminding me that i have an incredible watch. I recently got the call for the sub! bought it and im super glad i have these two in my watch collection they are so different but so classic at the same time. Think the pelagos 39 is more of the everyday workhores tough and cool and the rolex sub is the most sofisticated tool watch but you use it in special ocations.
I agree with you 💯 that the clasp on the original Pelagos is simply the best in the business. I also adjust it 3-4 times a day as my wrist expands and contracts. The Pelagos is the Tudor for me. I own a blue 42

Happy to hear this review! In all honesty I've heard these comments many times before on TGN but great to hear them again over the great shots of the watch
Ill be honest i was really excited about this watch. Handled one in person at local AD here in Vancouver and was shocked at how bad the finishing was - the shield on the clasp was completely lopsided, whomever finished and approved the clasp should be fired and it was very surprising they would let it out...
This is a great release by Tudor. Figured I’d own it one day. I recently got offered a no date sub at retail. Haven’t thought about the Pelagos 39 since. Guess you can’t beat a sub 🤷♂️
Brilliant video, very in depth, thanks very much, I absolutely love it and will definitely be getting one, the T clasp looks spot on to me, never had one but I know for a fact I’d be adjusting it daily.
Do you like it more than the bb 58 or 54? I’m currently deciding between, I’m also waiting to see if they release the pelagos 39 in blue. I would be using the watch mainly to go out and about but also as a daily.
Nice review! I had the 39 myself, but sold it. I really couldn't get over the lume on the hands. Its noticably weaker than the marker, and alsom seems to fade quicker. Which in all honesty almost renders it (the lume) useless. Also, way to few points on the t-fit, at least considering the size of the clasp. I actually had trouble getting a perfect fit... Other than that, love the watch. Looks great, and great specs! If it Tudor ever smooths out those small few point, I will get it again for sure
Mine now stays in the drawer because every time I wore it, I’d lose markers. All I do is walk, drive, have dinner. I’m debating about just getting Pagani design watches, and keep my Tudor pelagos as a reminder of who I was before.
@@seavee2190 the 5, 10, 55 white ceramic indicators on the bezel fell off. I rarely wear it anymore because of that. Almost considering going to homage or replica’s because of how poor quality Tudor is.
I had the new 2022 Pelagos and was very unhappy. After just a few days the upper black ceramic bezel fell off just by turning. That was fixed in Rolex service. When I went to see/salt water, again this time the whole bezel did not turn any more it was stuck. Sounds crazy but so it was. Then I rinsed the watch the bezel action was again back to normal.
