Is it odd that I move between J and P depending on the situation? So I may be pressure prompted when it comes to some things, but others not as much. I am mainly J when it comes to work or big life decisions. That said? I think I do "plan" for some failures in advance and make an alternate plan- so maybe that's not very P of me after all. LMAO
For me N and S are likely the 2 biggest that I sometimes mix-match. I do have a science degree and we have to rely somewhat on concrete knowledge, but some rely on it too much and cling to old ways of research. I guess I like to use the concrete known to find the unknown?

I’m ENFP and I swear I’ve been in so many social situations that I thought I’d never be able to speak to a single person only to find one dude and chat with him for the entire time. We are very introspective people and oftentimes play around in our heads, but love seeking joy in others.

This makes a lot of sense. And I find it scary that I was actually thinking about this concept last night before this video even came out. I find that I still strongly identify as an INTJ since my cognitive functions are things I do naturally. However, I had been questioning if I am an ENTP since I can find myself behaving as one at times. Whether stressed or not. So this video has provided answers to my nagging question.

Haha that is interesting! I identify as an ENTP but I sometimes wonder if I behave more like an INTJ, especially in comparison to another ENTP I know. But I guess I just have one or two outliers in the I/E and the P/J dichotomy... How funny that it is reverse for you!! On the other hand, while those "substrates" or whatever they are called might be useful tools in order to measure preference within the dichotomies (eg as items on a mbti test) this video makes the whole system seem much more flexible than makes sense. Mbti is a preference system, based on the idea that mastery follows time you spend using a cognitive functions which in turn follows preference. You'll use more what you prefer and because of the time invested practising you become more skilled at it... This goes against the idea of any "middle ground" ... Frank? Do explain! ;)

I’m INFP to the max. As in, most of the percentages were 70% to 30% and the closest to middle ground was around 60% to 40%. However, I resonated with more Js than Ps in this. I hate it when I have to deal with something pushed onto me last second, I hate it when my plans are changed, and I specifically hate it when *a certain friend of mine texts me and says ‘I feel like coming over today’ when I already had been looking forward to do absolutely nothing at all.*

@Jaime Phillips It’s more about knowing how long I have until the time I had planned to do a certain thing. It gives me more peace of mind knowing that it has a set date and time rather than be in the heat of the moment. Sometimes it can factor into a social battery because I need to have at least a day minimum in advance to mentally prepare for a huge time with friends, but I overall just really don’t like it when something suddenly pops up that I can only describe as spur of the moment because it interrupts what I was expecting out of the day. If something changes and I don’t have enough time to prepare myself for it, I have to change everything else I had in mind for what I felt like doing in to accommodate that and it just makes me stressed out

As an INTJ I have put a lot of effort into my less naturally developed strenghts so this this is very interesting. When it comes to I vs E I have basically said "frack it" and jumped into all kinds of situations lately, including some pretty challenging ones. I`ll just write down my thoughts on the various points here...
Initiating vs Receiving - probably in the middle now.
Expressive vs Contained - well into expressive.
Gregarious vs Intimate - hard intimate.
Active vs Reflective - both are essential so.. middle?
Enthusiastic vs Quiet - very much enthused.
    - mid zone overall, guess I am not betraying my I ?
Concrete vs Abstract - both, middle.
Realistic vs Imaginative - both but tending towards imaginative.
Practical vs Conceptual - both but tending towards conceptual.
Experiental vs Theoretical - oh boy.. let us just say middle.
Traditional vs Original - hard original.
-clearly N, but less so than expected
Logical vs Empathetic - hard logic.
Reasonable vs Compassionate - strongly reasonable despite "big heart"
Questioning vs Accomodating - hard Q.
Critial vs Accepting - pretty strong critic.
Though vs Tender - I am mr T, what do you mean "focus on the meaning"?
    -no real surprises here
Systematic vs Casual - strong S.
Planning vs Open ended - well into planning.
Early Starter vs Pressure Promted - depends, but probably solid ES.
Scheduled vs Spontanous - tending to scheduled.
Methodical vs Emergent - tending to Methodical
    -as expected
Confirmed INTJ with boundless energy and strong empathy I guess....

My girlfriend and I are both INTPs, yet we're so different that at first I thought she was an INFJ. It took some time to convince me that she is an INTP as well, even though she is more sensitive and organized than I am.
On the other hand, I always considered myself the most stereotypical INTP ever; and I'm pretty sure I would score in preference for the I and N subtraits. However, I would say I'm more tender than tough, and I would score in the middle zone for the last two J/P subtraits. It's so fun to learn about this stuff!

I think it's interesting to reflect on what our typical patterns of behavior were before we learned to change them. For example, as a kid I wasn't organized at all and I did everything I didn't want to do at the last minute. As an adult, if I don't like the tasks I have to do (laundry for example), I do it first to get it out of the way so I can enjoy endless FREE time. I value both structure and variety, too much of one or the other irritates me which I believe is because I have a high need for autonomy. When I was younger I didn't use critical thinking skills as much as I do now and as an adult I'm a stickler for the facts - three credible sources in a debate or it's a garbage argument IMO. That said, I feel everyone's feelings and I'm always looking for the middle ground or a way to understand their perspective. The sub traits are really interesting.

I also think that ambience can influence on these differences. I'm INTP woman, and I think because of my culture and my sex, my inferior Fe has been encouraged. Also, I was raised by an INFJ mom and a healthy INTP father, who were able to reasoning with me for showing affection towards others.
For years, I thought I was INFP because I genuinely care about other people and I have strong values, and because my logic was pretty subjective, so maybe, I wasn't that logical. I needed to learn about cognitive functions to discover that nope, I was in fact, an INTP.

6:02 I think that the reason that the letter dichotomies (I hope I spelled that right) don't let you be in the middle is because they are based on the cognitive functions, which are very structured. Some people say that I vs E can be in the middle, using the letter A, due to the fact that that letter deals with the order of the cognitive functions, rather than which ones you use, unlike the other letters. The reason the subtraits are less strict is because they are not tied to anything else that could limit them in any way (You can be an initiating introvert, for example). I hope this made sense.

“this video was filmed an hour ago.” 🤣 hm...i will ponder this, but initial reaction is that MBI is trying too hard and bending to pressure by expanding the types. i find it much more helpful to think of mbti type as the base layer of a person, where other layers such as life experiences, mental health/illness, maturity level, etc are other layers resting over the top. kind of like if you take a red photo gel and lay a blue gel on top. it doesnt totally obscure the red or the blue but both colors are modified. to understand what you’re truly looking at you cant just say purple. you have to observe and hold in your mind the whole as an amalgamation of its parts and their interactions.

I really feel this, and helps me as an ISFP understand why I don't feel super instant with things and prefer a slightly more structured schedule.
I'm the Feeler that prefers to have a set time for work lunch, but casually at home I don't care. I'm a Perceiver that prefers to approach a situation with enough info before I work on the task, because if I don't get enough to work with I feel frustrated with the task at hand and nothing comes close to that with most Turn Based games where you have to "guess" the boss's attack a few turns ahead. I'm more spontaneous with info before that works into the equation and when I'm use to the problem, rather than guessing it every time. Action or puzzle games is what I'm great at, rather than turn waiting strategy because when I'm usually relaxed and working being reactive is much more easier for me than working on a set to-do list unless its just a casual list to help me know what I'm doing. If I don't know what I'm doing, then my god its hard. I hate being relaxed at work when there's nothing to do on the clock, and would rather do something else than just sit or stand around if I can help it unless on a break time. But I also don't like being overwhelmed with things to do, then I feel I have to get them done before I leave, since I fit into a bit with getting my homework done as much as possible to relax. Off the clock I'm typically relaxed and like to have no surprises, but in most causes welcome most casual surprises.

    @jenniferhanses7064 2 роки тому +1

Wow. I found that one very useful and illuminating.
I'm an INTJ, and here's how I shake out:
    I:
I can initiate in the right circumstances, but I definitely prefer to receive. Ideal for me have been boardgame meet ups where I go out once a month and meet some new people, but there's not as much social pressure because we're all busy playing. Also, mainly introverts, so really low social pressure.
Expressive is me. Once I have a topic or a story to tell, I can get rambling along with facial expressions, and voice intonations, and hand gestures, etc. Contained is just the default until I find something interesting to talk about or someone interesting to interact with.
Intimate, and I'm back on I preference.
Active is me again. Phones exist to call people to meet up in person. In person is always better. I mentioned those board game parties? Sometimes we pulled 2 and 3 day weekends of togetherness and gaming. I'd usually have a headache the next day, and learned to just take that day off of work to be alone and nap an read. But the pain was the price I chose to pay to spend time with people. Although I do learn a lot through reading and writing, so perhaps I have a medium score here.
I think I split the difference on enthusiastic v. quiet. Depends on the situation.
N: I find myself more medium on these, but both my parents are S as well as one of my sisters (other sis is also INTJ)
I've gotten more into the symbolic as I've aged. But ... well, maybe I'm just so used to explaining things that I've latched onto concrete because I'm trying to find something the S people can understand, so I tell stories of examples, trying to make them understand what I'm saying. So probably middle ground?
Realistic v. Imaginative. Ummm... Both? I'm not bound to what I know works. But it's only in taking what I know works that I can extrapolate new things that might work better. It's my default state to try to make things as good as they can be, so I guess I'm more imaginative. But I'm not out there scribbling and speaking in tongues because I just refuse to use the tried and true methods.
Practical v. Conceptual -- I'm practical pretty much all the way except for, say writing and roleplaying, which I think are more conceptual hobbies.
Theoretical. I've heard the whole "learning from my mistakes" thing and I believe I can also learn from other people's mistakes. I do not need to see it, but my data is better if I do also experience it.
I guess Original. I mean, I do like Traditions. But the traditions I like, I understand why they are the way they are and I agree with them. I'm highly into manners and etiquette for example, as they create boundaries for smooth operation in the world. But I also understand why things like "don't brag to people about parties they're not invited to" are rules.
    T:
Logical all the way. Who wouldn't prefer to be logical? the problem is just that reality is complicated.
Reasonable. Mostly reasonable. I'm not opposed to softening language to be polite or out of deference to the emotions of the opposing (wrong ;) ) side. I strongly believe that it is possible to marry justice and mercy through creative solutions, and am not inclined to hurting people out of hand.
Questioning. Soooo questioning. I mean, it would be nice if everyone would come to the group consensus of just agreeing with me, but as that doesn't generally happen, and I'm not inclined to beating them over the head to achieve my ends, it's got to be questioning. Also, conflict is the best. The thing I miss most about my long term ex is the arguments. We'd argue and reason through all kinds of movies and books and problems and it was awesome. We also didn't insult each other in these arguments because they were never meant personally. They were purely about the ideas and seeking understanding, accord, and/or solutions.
Critical with a very low tolerance for stupidity.
Ummm... I'm very end goal oriented, but means is often very important to achieving a lasting end goal. Like I think I'm Tough personality-wise. I'm just very pragmatic. There's no point in me fighting for a thing and beating people's heads in to get it only for someone else to come by five seconds later and destroy what I achieved unless I only needed it to last for five seconds.
    J:
Casual. I'm very off type here. The thing is, I've planned and back up planned for pretty much anything and would just love for you to throw me a curveball because it would be interesting. I will adapt to most things unless you throw off my schedule for something that needed to be done or I was looking forward to. At times, I'll even specifically open up my schedule if I know general life is all Whack-a-ding-hoy. Opening the schedule and creating time provides more ability to react with less stress. I think my byword for all of the J/P subtypes is "don't stress me out, man. It's not worth it."
Assuming you read the previous paragraph, this should be obvious: Planful. If I already created a plan when I had spare time, then that means I don't need to stress out when shit hits the fan. I can just take what I have, adapt it as needed, and move on with my life.
Early Starting. I don't get huge projects done the next day. I pull out my schedule, break them down into little chunks between now and the due date, and figure I will do those chunks on the day scheduled, and if something comes up and I have to move it, there will be time in the next day or the day after to catch up because the chunks are all small. No pressure. I can get it all done on time without sacrificing my personal life.
Scheduled, as you can probably tell if you read above. I can get bored of my routine. I've kind of wondered during quarantine if I needed to go out and make more ESFP friends to blow things up in my general vicinity to keep life interesting. But if it's not on my schedule, I will forget to do it. And it's easy to remember things when you have a routine.
Methodical in an ideal world, but I can deal with having to be emergent so long as I'm not making life or death choices. Maybe 80% to 20%?

Since the p and j basically change all the cognitive functions, this is confusing to me. Am I an INTP like I’ve always tested as or could I be an INTJ? I'd say maybe research the specific cognitive functions of each more in depth if you haven't already since no offence to whatever entity came up with this it doesn't seem all the more accurate when it come to cognitive functions, it's kind of just breaking down the letter stereotypes into categories of the letter stereotype so you can tick some boxes and validate why "specifically" you may not relate to literally a jumble of cognitive functions that have been messily boiled down to some inaccurate, messy, and just maybe a little bit nonsense meanings for one "letter". functions are actually so great at not only like being specific and helping you understand your type or others type like more... I dunno clearly? (like broken down past stereotypes to more accurate pieces that make up each type) but also it's sort of exposes to another extent the level of like nonsense that's kind of being drizzled on with these letter typings. it's not all bad but it's certainly not all accurate, no offense to the man Frank James but sometimes you wonder just how much he knows what he's talking about... anyways yes, research is my only recommendation!

I never heard about that "phase II" before.🤔
Going along the video, I found out:
    - E: all in preference except for Intimate
    - N: all in the mid-zone (as if "N" was for "neutral")
    - F: just a little more empathetic than logical...and anything else in the mid-zone
    - J: slightly more systematic than casual...and anything else in the mid-zone
That could explain why I come across as a "no nonsense" ENFJ to my friends and family (my "Ti whip" might be a lil bit more striking 😅)
Thanks again for the great video FJ! Keep them coming!

As an INTJ, the first two are always pretty clear, no doubt. It's the last two that are softer, and this lets me see why. I do tend to hold back on what I really think in the interests of preserving the peace a bit more as I get older and I like trying to find a compromise that works for all parties instead of taking my way or the highway, but that doesn't mean I still don't think my way is right. As for the last, I do plan ahead, I like having a plan and routine, but unless I'm already stressed, I can generally handle it already if things change up on me. And my tendency to procrastinate definitely depends on the size of the project and my interest in doing a thorough job on it. Some things I work through methodically with a definite plan of attack, and others I leave to the last minute.

but how do cognitive functions fit into the equation? i'm thinking maybe how much variation there is in the subtraits of a letter dichotomy has to do with your function stack. like as an INFP, i'm and Fi dom so i fit 4/5 F traits. but since my Ne and Si are in the middle, the N/S subtraits had me thinking "it depends" a lot

Perfect timing! I was actually confused if I'm INFJ or INFP but now I'm quite sure it's INFJ, I scored somewhere in the middle in some subtraits but overall it's J not P. I identify 7/10 with INFJ overall.
    Thanks

I have a question 🙋🏻‍♀️ I've only recently started learning about the cognitive functions and now that I know that introverted types' dominant function is the opposite of their last letter, I've wondered whether in this case, therefore, it makes sense that I see myself much more in that opposite letter.. for explanation I am an infp but all judging subtraits except the pressure prompted one resonate with me

    • @nuisancepenguin5210
      @nuisancepenguin5210 2 роки тому +2

(this is based on my understanding and learning related to cognitive functions so keep that in mind) well essentially how letter typing works in reference to each types cognitive functions is that "introverted vs extraverted" and "judging vs perceiving" are actually mostly in the letter dichotomy to help decode the order of your functions or your first function and then the rest of them. ok that might not make sense, so "extraverted vs introverted" and "judging vs perceiving" don't technically have specific functions attached to them, they are each types of functions e.g. the extraverted functions: Se, Ne, Te, Fe; the introverted functions: Si, Ti, Fi, Ni; the judging functions: Fe, Fi, Te, Ti; and the perceiving functions: Ne, Ni, Si Se. as you may have noticed your first function Fi is an introverted judging function, so the function you live your life through the lense of is a hiding function which is probably why you relate to some of those things. however another thing to mention about how "i vs e" and "j vs p" is that you saw how many functions that encompassed, they are many quite different functions, so with the 16 personalities way (or the letter typing way) of looking at it each letter needs to have one meaning, to explain take for example F, there are two F functions Fe and Fi, Fe and Fi are quite different but with the letters to have one meaning for F they have to lump together Fi and Fe for one explanation of F so it ends up being a bit more vague and a bit less accurate and leans more into stereotype. with N, S, T, and F it's the same thing, they lump together 2 functions for one explanation, howeeeevvvvveeerrrr with E, I, J, and P they are lumping together 4 verrryyyy different functions for 1 explanation which ends up being very vague and often inaccurate and very very stereotypical. sidenote another explanation of J vs P is also that it lines up with your first extraverted function, so your first extraverted function is actually Ne (my first function!) and since it's an extraverted function it may be hypothetically easier to notice in yourself or for others to notice since as an extraverted function it relates more to interacting with the world around you (even though it is a perceiving function so it's about how you perceive the outside world if that makes sense) so even though your first function is an introverted judging function, your second function (and first extraverted function) is a perceiving or "P" function. ok that's enough from me and you might not understand all of that but what I mean to say is you're right and also that "j vs p" specifically (although "i vs e" too) is like one big massive really quite inaccurate stereotype in letter typing but it's pretty helpful with cognitive functions once you start really understanding not only them but how the letters actually tell you each types cognitive functions (which starts of as a real mental safari but it does get a lot easier I swear). anyways sorry for raving on I'm a bit of a nut for cognitive functions, I really hope you get more into because I can't stress how much more helpful and even just more specific understanding them is (and I didn't think it could get much more specific after taking the 16personalities test). hope this helped in some way,
      - your friendly neighborhood enfp :)

I used to wonder if I was more of an INFP because of my mannerisms, but I still strongly related to the ENFP description.

I'm fairly balanced on my I/E and my N/S, but my F function is off the charts and my P function is fairly high as well. Every time I take the test I always score either an INFP or an ISFP.
Now that I break it all down with these concepts Frank used in this video, I understand the reason! I'm super balanced on my N and S.
It's real easy for me to determine that I'm most definitely an I type, but I definitely can switch over to E tendencies when absolutely needed. I learned a lot from this video, thanks!

I miss frank not rushing through the videos trying to keep the length of the video short and speaking so rapidly I have to repeat it three times in order to get what he explained . Like he used to take his time for commercial breaks and it didn’t feel interrupting at all. I really enjoyed the commercial breaks bc it didn’t have that triggering effect when an ad interrupts ur video. but now it’s the same trigger like in every other video on yt. And even if the video was like 20 minutes long, I understood it on first try and didn’t have to watch the video 5 times trying to understand what he’ s just told me. I still love your channel and appreciate your hard work, but could u please take your time, Frank? Appreciate it
