Can a Garmin watch replace your Bike Computer? (Forerunner 55 VS Edge 830)

- Recently I purchased a Garmin Forerunner 55 to help track my running, but it got me wondering. Could it replace my dedicated cycling computer (Garmin Edge 830)? The Forerunner is packed with useful features especially when paired with the Garmin Connect app. In this video I go into a few different factors which I've considered:

Data while riding 02:13
Useability 2:59
Accuracy 03:49
Price 05:22
Conclusions 06:12
Why don't you tell me your thoughts in the comments below!

I recently bought a Foreunner 55 and have been using it as an indoor cycle computer, paired with speed and cadence sensors and a HRM chest strap, and mounted on a watch mount. It works absolutely fine. I've been toying with buying a Garmin 530 for the outdoor season, but I could also see myself saving $250 and using the watch, plus a phone for navigation.
Can you pair a power meter as well as the HR strap at the same time when using the watch?
Just ordered mine today. Thanks for the video. Precisely what i wanted to find out. Cheers from Ottawa Canada. ✌️
I started recording my cycling on a Garmin Fenix. Had maps and everything with HR but was hard to follow maps. If all you want to do is record your rides then they are perfect.
I think the maps/navigation on the Fenix (I had a 6) were probably the deciding factor for me to switch to a head unit tbh.
@@christophershi5605 I was using a 5 as well. Now using a Wahoo Roam and it’s awesome.
I have the forerunner 55 and i am in doubt to buy the Edge 840 so this was a very interesting review for me. Thank you!
Thanks mate! If you ride regularly I think the headunit is worthwhile.
Maps is also a feature where the head unit is shining. The bigger screen is the way to go here. I have an 830 head unit for my bike and have a Fenix 6 for all other activities. As you mentioned, the watch is great because it gets every day usage. But I still concider the head unit as invaluable for the bicycle.
Yep, that’s a big reason why I use the headunit.
Also it’s just good to have something dedicated for the bike. I know some people who love the climbpro feature.
Coincidentally 2 hours after you posted your video, Cycling Weekly published an article comparing an Edge 1040 to a Forerunner 955. Their conclusion was similar to yours.
I used to use my phone with the Strava app but that was a pain for longer rides as it eats up the battery. I bought an Edge 830 when it was on sale; the battery life is great and having an always-on screen for stats is useful. When I commute I don't really care about stats but I want to log the mileage so I know how many kms to go till I should service things, so I track that on my Epix 2 watch. It's one less thing to charge and saves that extra half minute switching a head unit on and waiting for it to get GPS lock. I used to use Strava on my phone for that but kept forgetting to end the ride as I'd switch away to my podcast app or youtube (audio) while I ride.
I tried maps on my old Fenix 6 but navigating a map without a touchscreen is a paaaaain so I understand why chris switched to a head unit! It was the main reason why I switched to the Epix 2. Maps on a small screen is still a pain compared to a head unit, but it's great for breadcrumbing a hike.
Haha Cycling Weekly must be subscribed to me ;)
I found a lot of issues using strava on my phone. Sometimes it would close and not log the ride/run. Other times like you, I would forget to stop the activity and be driving in my car.
All in all, a headunit is fantastic training tool. Watch is good for other sports (running/hiking) and tracking the occasional activity.
Btw the Strava integration with Garmin is so good for getting routes onto the device.
I have used the Garmin Watches to grab data on bike rides. Some watch models have longer battery run times than the Garmin Computer on the bike. I always appreciate a larger display on the Garmin Computer that's on my bike. I never felt that I had to take my hand off the handlebar to see what I'm doing while training on my bike.
We need more unhinged content on this channel like the bonus clip 😍
LOL
Nice rolling with you that morning mate!
Ps garmin venu sq, for HR while riding paired with Garmin 530 head unit. Works pretty good so far. Also tracks the occasional run OK.
It was good to meet you too!
Nice comparison
Great vid as usual
Glad you enjoyed it
Commute rider mostly, I use a Garmin Epix G2 as its good enough for what I need, plus its a watch.
I got the head unit before Peaks due to the hands off the handlebars on the descents. I have a theory with my watch that I get an extra 0.5m elevation everytime I raise my hand to turn left. haha. Also you can adjust your elevations onto the AHD mapgrid for more accuracy post ride
Hahaha manually boosting your elevation.
Let’s be real though, the number you choose got adjusted elevation is just whichever is bigger ;)
@@joshkwan Obviously I do :)
I have a Garmin Fenix 6X Pro that I picked up as a shop seconds duty free for AU$350. I wear it on rides for time but also it is a backup HR sensor when I inevitably forget that. While I like it, it isn’t loved, I think that sums Garmin up though. Likeable but not lovable.
Couldn’t agree more. Feels like they’ve settled into their (semi) monopoly in the market, and haven’t innovated or really delivered anything super value/worthwhile in some time.
According to my testing the elevation data is correct if Garmin Connect calculates it (like in this video for the watch), because the barometric altitude sensor in the head unit is always down by a huge margin.
At my last ride my head unit (Sigma ROX 4.0) measured 727 m climb with its altitude sensor, while Garmin Connect corrected the data to 835 m according to the true elevation of that actual track. I also checked it in Google Earth and it gave me an elevation change of 843 metres. 🤔
Any garmin watch can connect to powet meter for cycling
For heart rate you should be able pair the Garmin heart rate strap
Yep this is true, but in this case I wanted to see the raw data collected by the watch
Personally I use the Garmin GPSMAP 1253XSV as my Bike computer.
Hahahaha I had to google that. Looks very…aero
@joshkwan you can find fish while you ride
Is there a way to use my watch to track but have my phone show the data so I don't have to take my hands off?
Hey mate, I think this would depend on your app on your phone. Some of them can connect directly to the sensors
Can you see the actual speed you riding with the Garmin Watch ?
Yea
If you want more accurate you need to connect a speed sensor otherwise it uses GPS

You can buy a used Apple Watch and a wahoo bike computer for less than that garmin watch
Second hand market has lots of great value deals :)
We are charging our lives away with all these gadgets 🤔😉
Haha in my original cut of video there was a section where I talked about having too much data and gadgets and sometimes its a bit overwhelming...but I took it out :P
Great minds think alike 😉
