Ahh, my new addiction. Copiapoa. I have 6 different ones now and one in a cart on a website waiting for me to get paid. 😂 my wife and I have been on a roll the last few weeks buying plants, not a surprise for us this time of year.

Theres actually a really good video from a professional copiapoa grower in california thats well worth a watch, as Copiapoa come from literally the driest desert in the world you can actually withdraw from even watering them in the summer and get them to there natural blueish colour doing it this way, i'm not sure that would work though in the uk, our climate is pretty bad most of the times and especially this year

I just found out recently, from Peter Walkowiak, an excellent grower of cacti and succulents, that you should still irrigate somewhat over winter to ensure the fine roots don't completely desiccate and rot away after spring watering. You might want to reconsider your winter irrigation methods and you might have healthier cacti in spring with a root system still existing

A sparkling start to the new week for you and Hans and your montana (cant remember how to type the genus name 😅) i love the blooms on that one. They are so big compared to the plant, and anything sparkly, i am all over that 😊😊

That's a lovely old plant Lyn, any idea why the fine root hairs have disappeared? It turns out a very similar thing has happened to my Parodia Magnifica, but the main root doesn't appear to be rotting. I hope it enjoys its new substrate and let's hope you see it back in flower again very soon!

So happy you love this old Copiapoa Donald :-D I think I have kept this plant to dry over the winter and this has caused the fine root hairs to die back, luckily they should grow back, but I will have to be careful with the watering at first, the good news is if your Parodia magnifica has its main root the fine root hairs should re grow again, I am pretty sure that may be why your magnifica was not taking up water, fingers crossed it will really plump up again once it has re grown its fine roots, thanks so much Donald for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle for a super Sunday today XXXX

Interesting looking cactus! Is it possible it lost those tiny feeder roots over the dry period in the winter and now it has to grow them back?🥰🥰

I don't mean to be truly critical but your copiapoa seems to be a little spindly meaning not enough sunlight these things can take strong sunlight in the morning
Thanks so much Jerry, yes this Copiapoa was not getting enough light previously due to my old greenhouse being too shady with the green cover, but thankfully our new polytunnel is much lighter as it has a clear cover and will let a lot more direct sun onto this Copiapoa, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX
