Just mind blowing watching you Matt that’s incredible. What an achievement!! When I started watching this video i had no idea you were to last that long…..
Man, that was hard to watch, those shakes! Gives me the willies! An amazing breath hold though, wow, that’s a serious achievement! What happened at the end with the judge? I don’t know how the competitions work so didn’t quite understand that bit.
Hi mate, thanks! Pretty happy with the time! So the judge basically disqualified me for surface protocol. Which meant I didn't get any points for it... When you surface you have 15 seconds to remove facial equipment, give an OK sign and say you're OK. After I lost control it took me a little while to snap back into reality and by that point it was too late! Even with my mate saying surface protocol at me repeatedly - I didn't have a clue what was going on 😂. Quite funny really because at the time I only felt a little bit dizzy!
@@OceanicMatt It's quite a staggering time to be able to hold your breath, I'm slightly in awe. It's quite scary that you're able to push yourself to the absolute edge. Shame you got disqualified but definitely doesn't take anything away from the achievement! Serious question, do you feel like you're doing yourself any harm by holding your breath that long? I used to train my breath-hold but got a bit freaked out once I started going over 4 minutes. I didn't do any research on it but it just felt a bit 'wrong', I'd be interested to know your thoughts. I presume this ability must make a massive difference when you're spearfishing? What kind of bottom times are generally doing when you're hunting?
Thanks mate, to be fair I never push myself like this in other disciplines - only static. Even if it's a DQ its still something! Maybe if I'd come up maybe 10 secs early might have been ok but hey! Learning points lol In terms of doing yourself damage, I don't think so really, the point where you black out is where not enough O2 is getting to the brain, so before then it should be fine. I don't know if there are any long term health impacts of long breath holding are though.. For Spearfishing I'd say the Freediving training definitely helps, not just for bottom time but also things like duck diving, finning & relaxation. My bottom time rarely goes over 2 minutes though, mainly because I never take the time to get fully relaxed. I don't like to push either as I'm alone all of the time!
@@OceanicMatt really interesting mate, again a big well done and fingers crossed on the long term side of things, I'm sure it's fine. Interesting on the bottom times, 2 minutes is a very solid time for spearing. Mine are more like 1:20 on average, as you said, no-one wants to push it when you're by yourself but it must be nice to have that ability in the tank if you need it. Do you do a lot of depth work? Personally, I've never been overly comfortable going deep, almost all of my diving is less than 6m, although a lot of that is due to the locations I fish.
It's pretty fascinating how far the body can go really.. I couldn't hold my breath for longer than a minute really before I started diving.. Can't find much about long term impact of breath holding so I'm sure we're fine lol! 1:20 for average is still good though mate. More than enough time to get a fish! I haven't done much depth work lately but I'm starting to again now, did some diving in a lake today and went to 25m, it was bloody freezing! And spearfishing I usually dive between 8 - 15m, yet again due to location.. We'll see what happens this year though, try a few more spots and maybe some deeper ones? Who knows... Portland has quite a variety of depths, probs head there more this year. You got any spots in mind for this season?
Great effort Matt! A PB is still a PB 👏
Thanks Abbie! ♥️

Thanks mate, really happy with this attempt, even if I was disqualified!
Haha I'm glad I surprised you!
