Spearfishing for Flatfish in shallow water & strong currents!
In this video I initially started with a plan to dive a wreck at Chesil beach. The conditions turned out to be less than ideal and were not what I was expecting. So I changed my plans and dive a different location just next to it - Ferry Bridge. This tidal bay can house Flat fish and other marine life so I decided to explore this area, rather than simply go home.
After exploring the deeper areas in the centre, I find flatfish in shallow water. The tide then turns and I fight against the current to find more fish. I was surprised to be greeted by a school of Bass, I then shoot a barely legal Bass and call it a day.

PB Static 05:46 at AIDA UK Pool Championship (Full attempt)

This video is my static attempt during the AIDA UK Freediving Pool Championship. My total time ended up being 05:46, which is a new PB and I am pretty happy about it.. But, I ended up pushing pretty close to my limit and surfaced pretty hypoxic and things went down hill! Luckily I didn't fully pass out but I did have a minor loss of motor control (LMC)! At the time I didn't really know it was h...
How to make a Neck weight for Freediving or Spearfishing.

"In this video I will show you how to make a Freediving neck weight! This is an easy DIY that requires minimal materials and equipment. If you are a new Freediver who is interested in dynamic disciplines, you will 100% need a neck weight if you want to have better control over your buoyancy! Neck weights can also be used in depth diving, to aid the diver in their descent. Neck weights can even ...
DIY Spearfishing Gear: Making a unique measuring tool for Shellfish and foraging
Переглядів 2925 місяців тому
In this video I design and create a bespoke measuring tool for coastal foraging, lobstering and crabbing. With the wintery weather in the UK making chances to dive very uncommon, it's time to focus on next season and making new bits of gear! Firstly I design the tool on fusion 360, then I 3d print in PETG. After a clean up it is partially assembled and nail polish is added to the images on the ...
DIY Spearfishing gear: Making a Wooden Line Winder for Spearfishing
Переглядів 2528 місяців тому
In this video I make a DIY line winder for Spearfishing! I had enough of tying clove hitches in the water every time I needed to adjust my float line, so I made this line winder. I made it from some Mahogany I had lying around in the garage. I designed the part on CAD software and tried to cut it on my CNC, the job didn't go to plan and I had to finish the job by hand anyway! Despite this, I wa...

Elephant seal attack him😭
Don't worry though. No-one was hurt!
That seal had the eyes as me when i play with my friend all nighters
Good vidéo 👍
Thanks very much! 🤙
F that
Yeah, not recommended
whites being whites
Southern elephant seal, northern elephant seal what’s the difference? and did the man got away and if he did then with what a minor injury or something pls let me know!
Southern Elephant Seals are only found in the South Atlantic & Antarctic regions. Whereas Northern Elephant Seals are found much higher up, on the USA west coast and higher. Southern Elephant Seals are also the largest species of Seal. Also I did not die or get injured from this incident! I just walked away feeling pretty shocked and stupid 😂
@@OceanicMatt well good to know.❤️
Seal: "Tf kinda Seal is you mfer?"
As far as I’m aware, the taking off bass is discouraged as it is a nursery, however definitely allowed, fished there as an angler for years and taken a fair few too, I can’t see why the rules wouldn’t be the same as rod and line🤷♂️ Brilliant video though!
Fair enough! I only found this area was a nursery after putting the video up! Good to know, but I'll leave Bass alone in this area and use it for flatties only from now on! From the regulation imagery it looks like under the bridge and out to Portland harbour aren't part of the nursery though so that could be alright? Glad you enjoyed the video too, thanks!
@@OceanicMatt Yes, bridge out into the harbour is where the nursery ends, should be fine!
Will PM you a spot for scallops in and around there if you fancy?👍
@@Jst99z What man wouldn't turn down a place to find scallops! Thanks man, PM me through my channel email 🤙
where do I find that?
Is he okay after that?
I'm all good!
Can you make the files available to download?
I can put it on thingiverse if you want?
People are oblivious to the obvious, dangerous animals about your size or bigger should be dangerous!
I wouldn't say I was oblivious to the animal being dangerous - I knew the risk. I made the mistake of getting too close and assuming the animal wasn't going to become aggressive.
Love this beach! Have you ever seen any sharks on your dive?
Awesome beach isn't it.. Been going to it for years but have only just started diving it! I haven't seen any sharks yet.. I've seen all the reports of Blue sharks coming into shallow water around St. Ives etc but unfortunately never seen one yet! Maybe one day!
@@OceanicMatt yeah I’ve never considered diving in the uk to be honest but after watching your video I’m really considering it! Just abit cold for my taste haha. And even though great whites aren’t officially in our waters I struggle to put that thought out of my mind!
@@willheath407That's awesome, you should definitely give it a try in the summer when it's flat and the Vis is good, you'll be surprised how good it is when the conditions are right! A decent fitting open cell wetsuit will sort the cold out for you too. I dive in a 5.5mm and it's fine all year round for me! Understandable about shark worries but the chances of you running into anything dangerous are pretty small, especially in shallow waters!
@@OceanicMatt oh awesome thanks man I’ll definitely have a look into that! Cheers
My friend lure fishes for Bass there. He hates you 😂
😂 Spearos in general or me personally 😂😂
@@OceanicMatt Ha! I won't be mean. Generally.
@@johnratcliffe6438 Haha well that's very kind of you 😂 Your friend must not have met many spearos / freedivers because we're a pretty nice bunch of people who love the ocean and harvest sustainably! 🤙🤙
Very nice video. Awesome landscape underwater. Beautiful kelp forest to dive in🤩
Thanks mate. I do miss diving here, I had an amazing time
had been a little traumatized by that 🤯 Those eyes on that seal. Jeez. cool that you got it on video😃
I know, the eyes are very creepy....So glad I caught it on video too! No one would have believed me otherwise! 😂
The heaven gates were seen when it stirked- but i also saw that insane dodge within half a second that was sick
I was very lucky 😅
Just watch out for the Great Whites
Hopefully I don't have to worry about those for a little while!
Bloody epic views, looked like alot of fun 😊
It was great fun! Swimming with these guys so regularly is probably one of my favourite things I've done since starting diving!
ITS EYES ARE SO ROUND WHAT???
Doesn't look natural does it 😂
I lure fish Sennen for Bass up the Gwenva end
Is that by boat? I've yet to dive around that area! Sennen's awesome isn't it.
@@OceanicMatt shore
Where was this?
The Falkland Islands, specifically Fox Point.
What did you expect to happen?
Was expecting it to act like a Grey Seal and just swim with / around me - not try to kill me! But I did get too close..
@@OceanicMatt I like leopard seals
They are pretty cool, wouldn't want to come across one in the water though!
@@OceanicMatt nooooo no no no stunning predator but still no
Your amazing mate. Clicked on the link as I thought it was a scuba dive. Incredible total respect for free divers. Stay safe.
Thanks Steve that's really nice of you to say! I hope you enjoyed the video even if it wasn't a scuba dive 😉
Wasn't an elephant seal it was a sea lion
Definitely isn't a Sea Lion - check the ears!
Seal said " get the fuck out of my ocean "
Did u have a floater ??
Not at the time!
I’ve had close calls before whole diving without the floater… I really hate using it but we have to man !
@@radwanhdeifeh223 Yeah?? What happened? I like my latest one which is more like a raft. But this trip I had nothing with me and hadn't seen any boats in the area for days, assumed it was quiet enough to risk it and then this happened 😂
Why you square up?
What would you do in this situation?
Looks tasty 😋🤤
It tasted great! 🤙
You’re lucky that wasn’t a male
Great video mate! I’ve always wondered about spearing that side of chesil, I’ll give it a go next week 🫡🔱
Thanks mate! Good luck! And don't shoot a Bass there 😅
Guys, I f*@cked up taking the Bass from this area. I've only just found this out but landing Bass in the tidal areas of Ferry Bridge is prohibited. I feel awful about this but people make mistakes, I have educated myself and I won't be making this mistake twice. Please don't make the same mistake I did and take Bass from this area.
Don't beat yourself up mate, we learn from these mistakes! I've done it before once at Wembury in Plymouth, now I obsessively check any new beach I go to
@@BenMopster Thanks Ben, I appreciate that! I have a feeling I'll be obsessively checking every time from now on too!
Hi matt Looking at going down there my self in a couple of weeks just getting in to spearfishing a thought it would be a good place to start.is it just bass you can't take from there or is it all fish?
@@leerimini858 Hi mate. From what I've read on the Southern IFCA, Bass is the only restriction (no take) at Ferry bridge. So you'd be fine for flatties and Mullet. Ferry bridge is nice and shallow so it wouldn't be a bad place to start. Get there at high tide and be careful of the currents when the tide goes out and you'll be fine!
random question but what do you do with the loose line that attaches to the spear gun and the spear
That line is wrapped between the line release in the trigger mech at the rear of the gun, and its anchor point on the underside front of the gun. A bungee keeps the line in tension so it stays in position when the gun is cocked!
Hey mate, what is the tool you use to wrap your float line around called Cheers from Australia 🤙
Hi Aaron! It's a wooden line winder that I made up myself! There's a video on my channel of the build if you're interested 🤙
WELL DONE FOR HITTING 1K SUBS!!!
Thanks very much!
I wish I was you:( I wish I had more subs. Maybe I don’t make good videos?
@@TheRandomBozosofficial That's very kind but it's taken me a year to get where I am and I was lucky because one of my videos popped off ages ago! I've still got a long way to go! I'm in no position to give advice but I'd say that finding a subject you are passionate about that actually makes you want to keep making videos is key. The subs and numbers will follow, just make sure you don't give up 🤙
@@OceanicMattI mean the ocean is my best friend though.. but I don’t spend enough time with him
@@OceanicMattI can’t give up. If I start fishing videos do I get views? Or subs?
Seal: Omae de mo *stares at him for a sec* SHINDIERU!!!!
O never realized in England we had such clear waters. Next time I visit home I need to dive ( I am PADI certified). 1/4 inch dry suite ? Do you see any big stuff like Tuna, or Halibut, or Mackerel ?
When the conditions are right the UK is really good! The south coast can have great visibility. I get by with a 5.5mm suit - a good thickness, I don't know much about dry suits but I'm sure that would be alright! Bluefin Tuna show up around Cornwall and Devon, I've never seen one yet though. Dolphins, Whales and sharks are in UK waters too!
That wreck could have been the Torri canyon which went aground in the early 70s devastating the whole of Sennen cove . I was there when the RAF blew it up to get rid of the oil, the beaces were shut for years and you can still find little blobs of oil under some of the rocks nearly 60 years on
@@mikeystreets9333 I've just been reading up about it, pretty horrendous environmental disaster! Must have been awful actually seeing that all unfold and the impact it had on the coastline. The wreck that I found isn't on navionics and I can't seem to find anything online about it either. So maybe it could be?
@@OceanicMatt depends how far out you were diving it was behind the large rocky reef, there are thousands of wrecks along that coast
@@mikeystreets9333 I'd say I was about 500m from the beach, around the reef but not past it.
RIP
Yea im never going to a lake or ocean ever again.
I'm sure you'll be fine 😅
Thanks for the video Matt. You can clearly see the current with the seaweed passing by.
You're welcome Clive, yeah it was pretty strong at points but was quite fun to dive!
thats not an elephant seal
Are you sure?
@@OceanicMatt it’s not there’s no elephant trunk thingy
@@CubecatSUPER Its either a very young male or a female. The only 2 other animals of similar size in that area are Leopard Seals and Sea Lions, and it's not either of those.
911:”911 what’s your emergency?” Me:”Neil ain’t Neiling”
diving in shallow water in such environments is exciting. Congratulations on the catch👌
Thanks mate, it was a fun dive! Next time I might check out under the bridge itself when the water is slack, Doubt there will be a 7kg Pollock there though 😂
@@OceanicMatt haha, no. probably not😅 But diving in shallow water has something special about it. I think it's quiet and peaceful. Can find all sorts of things. Good luck at the bridge next time 👍
That ain’t no elephant seal. It’s doesn’t have the little trump
Pretty sure it's a female - which doesn't have the big snoot..
@@OceanicMattoh ok
Or it's a young male.
If you ever make another one I'd put another inner tube around the first one. At some point you'll likely have a (small) tear, resulting in the lead shot pooring out. The pool owner won't like that very much. :) The shrink tube is a lot better thanthe electrical tape that's often used though!
Very good point! So far I've not had any leakage issues, but it's inevitable really isn't it! I'll try an extra inner tube though when I have to make another! Another thing I've seen people use are fabric sleeves that go over the tubes. My next one I might even try using a silicone tube rather than an inner tube. I avoid electrical tape since I started using shrink wrap! Much cleaner!
I just came from the edit, real funny lmao! But sheesh this is the reason why I am more afraid of pinnipeds rather than sharks.
Glad you enjoyed it mate! 😂 Well so far I've only had a Pinniped try to kill me, so I can see why!
@@OceanicMatt and they fear sea lions over here in California, can only imagine a giant ass seal
Idk how I can laugh and be scared pale as a ghost but here I am! Damn thing has eyes of a devil lmfao
😇 *PromoSM*
You do know the size limit on Bass?
42cm
There are still quite a few areas around the country where all bass have to be returned
@@jayinwood647 True, from what I understand those 6 areas in Cornwall are all tidal estuaries/ rivers.. So Sennen cove should be fine, unless I've missed something of course.
@@OceanicMatt I think you might have but I didn’t want to accuse
@@jayinwood647 OK, could you tell me where this information is so I can make sure I'm better prepared next time? Cheers
