    This is the importance of picking a close in intermediate, trusting it and lining up to that line. It is well known that humans can always nail a right angle but underestimate acute and overestimate obtuse. A university of Wisconsin paper showed that at 75 degrees we underestimate 6 degrees and at 105 degrees we overestimate 7.5 degrees but we nail 90 degrees. Pick a point 18 inches in front of your ball on the target line and come in at a right angle. Always right on.

    Or you could you Nicklaus's method. Jack Niclaus had in actual fact 4 aspects of his alignment routine. 1. Ball 2. Target. 3. Intermediate target about 3-4 feet in front of ball 4. Marker about 3-4 feet behind the ball. He would then ensure that all these points lined up, set his club square to this imagined line and then set his body perpendicular to this line. That was the intent, however, Fred Griffin in the 80's showed that most tour players set up very slight open with their shoulders.

    Great job Brendan! The vision parallax gets even worse if you are left eye dominant but play right handed. I've been fighting this my entire golfing life. It takes discipline to go thru the routine for every shot in practice. I've really focused on it over the past month and it is paying off. I'd seen other players use this method and it has worked for me. Malaska's practice station works very well for training the eyes.

      Birdie Gof I am exactly that and have the worst time lining up, especially putts. I use alignment sticks on the range every time, use my putting mirror, and have to do a Mickelson style 3 foot circle putt drill in order to be able to aim on the course. Glad to know it’s not just me!

    Or you could do what Nicklaus did and find a spot a divot or discoloration in grass a foot or so from ball and set up parallel to that line, and just focus on that spot and don’t let the target alter your alignment to that spot.

    Pick a spot in line a yard or two ahead of the ball, line up square to that line and hit over it. Done! Simple!

  • @TheNYgolfer
    @TheNYgolfer 5 років тому +3

    Just stand straight up and make sure your feet, hips and shoulders are all parallel to each other. Now turn your head 90 degrees to your left (for right handed golfers) and see where your left shoulder is aimed. The shoulder should NOT be aimed exactly at your target of course. It should be aimed slightly left since your are standing not directly over the ball. How much left? That depends on how far you are standing away from the ball. With a driver it may be 3 feet. With a wedge , maybe just one foot or less.
    You have just taken aiming properly out of the equation, so if your ball doesn't go where it is supposed to go, don't blame your aim. blame your swing path and/or your clubface alignment.

  • @cs1810

    It's kinda confusing because on a golf course your intermediatry target wouldn't be 3ft in the air. To me, it looks like the base of that alignment stick actually goes left, while the top of it goes right. So i guess feeling slightly left aligned is actually pretty straight.

  • @The_YouTube_Critic

    100% I realized this on the range yesterday. I was subconsciously opening my shoulders at address as it felt like I was too closed to the target. I ended up hitting a lot of pull hooks or big blocks. Put my shoulder back on the right line, no more big misses.

    One thing you could have mentioned since you were on a perspective sidewalk is that some people that use a club or practice stick for range alignment tend to set it so your feet point to the target. You have to set it parallel to your swing target line or your path wil be a little to a lot(on shorter shots) to the right of your intended swing path. Does that make any sense the way I put that?

  • @gototcm
    @gototcm 5 років тому +2

    Must have missed something. Once you have everything lined up correctly looking down the line from behind, but how do you orient your shoulders at address to be parallel to the target line? I could maintain club alignment when behind the target line but at address I have no assurance of lining up square to that target line. You have a ruler on the ground but that doesn't exist on the course.

    • @BEBETTERGOLF
      @BEBETTERGOLF  5 років тому +1

      U just don’t change the distance from the clubface to your shoulder u set up behind the ball. From face on to target it is easier to to be square

    • @lawman78727
      @lawman78727 5 років тому

      I agree with Tom M's comment. Without the yardstick you can be square to the ball but many degrees off parallel to target.

    • @billknodlegolf8762
      @billknodlegolf8762 5 років тому

      When you're standing behind your ball, you set the clubface square to your body; in other words, your clubface is perpendicular to your shoulder line. Wherever you point the clubface when you set up, as long as you don't change that initial relationship between club and shoulders, your shoulders will be parallel left and in perfect alignment. The simplicity of it is this: all you need to focus on is aiming the blade at an intermediate target and shoulders will be in alignment. Hope that clears things up a bit.

    • @dmkappa62
      @dmkappa62 5 років тому

      Don’t get confused people. This is a great way to consistently have your club face and body square. it doesn’t mean that’s all you do. You still need to have your intermediate target and than put your already “aligned” body, parallel to that. Alignment is hard and you need to work on it constantly. But this drill or pre-shot will definitely help

    • @gototcm
      @gototcm 5 років тому

      @@dmkappa62 I understand and this does eliminate some of the variables in what I call poor aim. I think you nailed it though. As in putting, you should have an in-line target a few feet from the ball that you attempt to align yourself with (this is easier said than done). When you are hitting a 150 yard shot, a mere 3 degrees of misalignment (which is not much) means you are off the flagstick by + 7 yards, even assuming a perfect swing plane and clubface alignment.

  • @peterd5496
    @peterd5496 5 років тому

    I pick a close intermediary target then set up to it(I practice setting up the same to the ball every time). Then I simply play the shot having picked the correct club. Point is I do not check the target so don't see the parallax effect ;) Under 100 yards I visualise the shots. If I put a good swing on it I get a good result.

    I just aim the face first, then square my body to that. Works pretty well and is simple to do. Stand behind your ball, align with your target, pick an intermediate spot two or three feet in front of your ball and visually lock that spot in. Stand beside your ball, align club face to that intermediate spot, square up your stance and fire. Works for me.

I mean sure Ill keep my shoulders nice and square while I move to the adress position but then what? How do I know Im aligned? Maybe I setup my nice squared relation to the club behind the ball but im at 47 degrees to the side of the ball at adress so I still wont shoot down the target line that way...??? Is this just a longterm drill? Like you get used to lining up with a alignment stick until you dont need it anymore? I thought this was an actual trick not a long term thing.

  • @johnoxley1946
    @johnoxley1946 6 місяців тому

    I don't agree with your statement that when you're at address the target looks/feels as though it's 20 yards to the right. It only looks to the right when you look at the intermediate point. In truth, and this has been proven by Mike Malaska, Eric Cogorno and several other coaches, some of whom you've done video sessions with, when you are at address the target actually looks 20 yards to the left (for a right handed golfer), and that is what prompts over the top and pull shots, and to compensate for the optical illusion you need to actually hit what feels like 20 yards to the righ of th intermediate point to be on target. So you've got the illusion partially wrong but the correction for the illusion correct.

He says keep the relationship between shaft and body when pointing it down the line to establish your target line and then move into the setup position and keep that same relationship however when hitting an iron you need to lean the shaft a little forward ahead of the bal so you cannot maintain that same relationship.

    "The emperor has no clothes." That doesn't make any sense at all. Keeping your shoulders square has nothing to do with whether or not you are aligned to target. You can have all the square shoulders you want, but still be misaligned to target. Having square shoulders doesn't automatically align you to the target. The only helpful tip here, is how your perception changes from a down the line view, to a side view.

    Eye dominance man. Left eye dominance wont look the same as right eye dominance and vice versa.

    Mom, did you see that guy?? He really drove his ball way off the course I guess. Probably needs to work on his alignment. That's right, dear. No mom, he looks way right!

    A head on view of you aligning to the target would have more beneficial. Instead of just looking at your back on the video.
