I'm not saying that it's better than the other foldable phones but they definitely nailed the overall concept of the hinge and its purpose. Motorola just adding the old, nostalgic element of the old Razr to make a selling point. So what can they do if they want to make the kind of foldable phone like the galaxy fold and the Huawei's? Just make the same thing, same hinge concept but laterally and bigger scale.

That is so true Apple has nothing going and is so far behind time but people buy it because of the name I was so done with Apple after the iphone 4 and when I had it it always stayed jailbroken I went to Samsung and stayed with them up until recently I switched to asus with the Asus ROG phone 2 best specs on the market for the price

Owning a non-iphone design phone brings me back to my college days. The ingenuity of phones in the 2000s were amazing before iPhone arrived and swept the stage. Id buy it just for the feel of having a modern, functional folding phone again.
I always love my Motorola flip phone from the past and I'm going to love this one.... but i know that Motorola is going to focus and make this phone better and better as time goes it is good to blossom into a high-end flagship... you'll see.... and we all want that.
Not only that, there is nothing protecting the screen’s three sides from accumulating gunk that will make it more difficult for the screen to slide into the chin and/or move in and out for the bend.

The gap between the screen and the back as you open/close...things can get inside. But I love how they fixed the things going inside via the back of the hinge issue! I think they did, anyways - maybe? The rounded middle plastic bit and the side pieces sit flush no matter which fold position it is in
This imo is the best implementation of the folding screen mechanism. Not only it keeps the display protected but also avoids the crease. I'm thinking that this implementation can be used with bigger outer display. For example, the external glass display can be as big as the note 10+ screen and the internal display can be twice the size, while avoiding the crease completely and keeping it fairly protected. Although, I do believe their could be some problem but hopefully this implementation really works on larger outer display.
Precisely the mechanism I suggested when early previews of the galaxy fold came out. Tension the screen when folding out to get rid of the crease. Glad Moto noticed this during development shocked Samsung didn't .
Been underwhelmed with recent Samsung and Google efforts but this is the first recent Android phone to tempt me back. Wouldn't have guessed it would be Motorola! Well done Moto.

I'm currently an iPhone user... But I'm really giving this thing serious consideration... I adored flip phones back in the day and have been quite frustrated since that has effectively not been a thing anymore since smart phones appeared..
I am a huge fan of what Motorola did here. Though I'm an Apple person, but this is one of very few android phones I would actually want. I'm a fan of smaller devices, my daily driver is the iPhone SE for that matter. The Galaxy fold is.... something I would never want. Wayyyy too big. But this thing... Is so cool. I love it.

But what's the use case for a phone like this? Galaxy fold gives you a small tablet in the from factor of a smartphone. Razr gives you a normal sized phone in the form factor of a small phone, that made sense when flip phones just had numpads, but it doesn't make sense now.
im torn...i been a long time android user and this WAS going to be my next phone...BUT i recently got to use a iphone 6s YES A OLD IPHONE for a few weeks and i was blown away by how smooth and stable and issue free it runs compared to android....im now leaning towards iphone for my next phone....

It has to move a little so that it doesn't stress the screen when folding. The Galaxy Fold was given crap for having a gap in the frame, not the screen itself.

The tear drop gap is a great idea! I want samsung to copy how it folds, but I hope Samsung doesn't copy Where it folds. Having a phone and a tablet in my pocket is awesome! Cannot wait for the 2nd or 3rd iteration.
i think this is the kinda hinge the galaxy fold should have adopted but overall the razr seems like the most practical design so far though its actually a foldable that doesn't give extra screen like the fold does it just improves pocketability. i hate the battery size, aspect ratio, chipset and the notch but in their defense apple has proven that battery size doesn't necessarily determine battery endurance but android is not power efficient like ios. if apple ever make a folding iPhone i hope it will be more or less like tis design

I remember i when the first razor came out it set the bar for thin phones and ever since then every phone that came out after was designed to be thin. Now I think the new trend is gonna be foldable smart phones.
What people fail to understand is that these phones aren’t for the mass consumer. These devices are for tech enthusiast and for the people that can actually afford them. Reason being is that this technology is in its early stages of life. Company’s are trying to get their foot in the race by bringing these products out. Once the production becomes more main stream and easier to produce and create, the prices will go down and the products will only get better and better.
Hopefully I’m wrong, but I’ve seen some demo unit with minor crease, combined with the screen gap, good luck collecting dust inside your pocket... BTW where is the opening-closing machine that has been used for Galaxy Fold? I want to see that thing test this phone to prove me wrong
This hinge design is very old and has been used for many different applications before Lenovo and Motorola created variants of it. Open gears? Then what are they doing to prevent debris from getting in there and damaging the screen and/or the hinge mechanism? Until that is addressed foldable displays will always have a serious weakness.
Dust, dirt, rocks, lint, hair, and any other small object will work it's way behind the screen, in the hinge and in the gears. Gonna require cleaning often with compressed air.
If this is turning out even half as good as the original Razr, this will be a damn good phone. I had that for like 3 years until a drunken party and a drop in the toilet. Let's just hope this time it can withstand the water.
In my opinion, the Razor is the most practical device with this new trend of foldable screens.

no. It scratches at level 3. It´s a foil display. Tempered glass cannot fold.
I'm pretty sure it has ZERO scratch protection. The Fold's screen can be damaged by fingernails.
