  • What an amazing experience to hike and fish Lake Blanch near Salt Lake City, Utah. The hike is not easy, but well worth it for the views and scenery. The hike is roughly 7 miles round trip with 2,500 feet of elevation gain. Luckily, I brought my fly rod to fly fish for the trout that call these waters home. I caught both Arctic Grayling and Brook Trout (@ 3:40). We also got to watch a bull moose at the water's edge. On the way back down, we saw an elusive Pika. Unfortunately, the Pika was too fast and we were unable to get a picture or video.
One of our favorite parts of the hike was seeing the brook trout trying to jump up the waterfall in the creek that connects the lower two lakes. I was able to get some underwater footage of the trout, as well (@ 4:30).
If you enjoy hiking or fishing in beautiful alpine terrain, I highly recommend this hike. It's important to note that this hike is moderately difficult and quite exposed. It can also be very hot in the summer, so be prepared.
    Thanks for watching!!!

Awesome. You'll love it. There will be a lot of people up there. I recommend going to the lower lake (far right once you get there). It's another quarter mile or so, but well worth it and probably less crowded. Have a great time!

Benjamin! Thanks for sharing. We will be backpacking and hiking to this lake this weekend Sept 20th. What kind of flys do you recommend for these lakes? Thanks in advance!

Hi Michael - I fished near the inlet on the lower lake (Florian, I believe) and had good success on a flashback pheasant tail (size 14). I am sure most mayfly nymphs will produce. Brook trout generally like bright colors or flash. Good luck!
