- Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
A few weeks ago in May, I was in Santa Fe teaching a workshop. Despite a packed schedule, I managed to film some footage on the last day before heading home. Initially, I planned to share this exclusively on Patreon, but I've decided to share it with everyone!
Join me as I draw on location at the Santa Fe Farmer's Market, near the iconic water tower at Santa Fe Railyard. In the middle of the bustling market, I found a moment to sketch the vibrant scene. Starting with the "chilli guy", this sketch captures the essence of the market.
While drawing, two artists joined me at the communal table. We chatted as I sketched, adding layers to the experience. I even used a technique called Frankensteining, blending elements from different people to complete my people sketches.
Drawing on location is more than just creating an artwork; it's about soaking up the atmosphere, the sounds, the conversations, and the memories. This experience is captured in my sketch, filled with the buzz of the market, the sounds, the smells.
I hope this inspires you to be brave and courageous, to go on location, and to draw your surroundings. You might even strike up a conversation or inspire someone else to capture what they see.
Materials used in this video:
-Hahnemühle watercolor sketchbook, size A5
-Pentel Pocket Brushpen, filled with the waterproof ink it comes with
-Daniel Smith Watercolors
-Pentel Aquash Waterbrushpen

Thank you for showing us this. So many people, so many outfits, so much design fit into just 2 pages! Thank you for showing us your process and I love the colors you used!!!
You are so welcome!
Yes, this does inspire me, especially the Frankensteining.
I hope you get to Frankenstein a lot
Going to learn to Frankenstein! To think how much pressure that takes off from assuming I need to create a true likeness for an acceptable true portrayal of the experience. Frankenstein Pages!!!
Always happy when Tuesday rolls around!
Me too ☺️
I love your videos! Your sketches are so inspiring and full of life
Thank you so much!
This looks so much fun. An interesting market, overwhelming, I feel that too at times when the view is all jumbled and disordered. Love your sketch. 😊
Lots of fun!
Good morning Koosje. I love your videos. This one was too short for me. I love your book, have read through it twice, when I need inspiration I pick it up. Have a wonderful day. 😅
Seems like the book was too short too 😜
Thank you for sharing this incredible inspiring video Koosje❤ much love Fee
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Koosje, you always inspire me, I have still need to pluck up the courage to draw on location….. maybe one day! 🥰xxx
Maybe if you do it with at least one other person it might be less daunting?
One day or some day is not one of our seven week days…. Just saying! Why don’t you pick up your sketchbook and a pen and do it right now, today? And if you don’t feel courageous enough, ask a friend you trust to go have coffee with you, and sit next to you while you do a quick sketch?
I was fascinated by the poet at his typewriter. Have a great day!!
Me too! I should have asked him for a poem.
Very cool! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I’ve been to that market❤ I’ve been to NM twice. It truly is the Land of Enchantment!
☺️
I love your sketch. It is so interesting to watch you sketch on location. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Been twice to Santa Fe, if I were rich I would move from Scotland to New Mexico. I just love it there. I imagine your workshop was wonderful. This 'departure' drawing is so full of life and love. Thank you for sharing with us Koosje ❤❤❤
I’m looking forward to my first visit to Scotland this summer!
I was happy and surprised to see that you were in Santa Fe. My family is from New Mexico, and my mom spent 20 years living in Santa Fe. She was the HR manager at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum when they opened up years ago. It's such a truly wonderful place and a great artists' haven.
Me and the group of students were all very inspired there!
Once again, most excellent! Have you tried the (disposable) Pentel Sign Pen Micro Brush Artist? It makes the thinnest lines I’ve seen so far. Similar to the Kuretake Ai Liner. But alas it’s not a refillable. 😢
I tried it but it’s too thin for my heavy handed sketching
Koosje, this is wonderful, and as a New Mexican I am contractually obligated to point out that our state vegetable is chile (not chili).🌶️ 😂
😂
Oh! Good one! I was there for too short of an amount of time (and in an art workshop bubble) to even realise...
Hi Koosje , "ENVY " is not a good word and I always try to avoid it . I follow you keenly and I have heard many times the advice involving practise etc and I'm sure its all good and accurate advice , but after watching your videos there are times that I do come very ,very close to that "E" word !!!!!! Thank you , so much for all that you give me , Mike in Exeter , UK , xx
Mike, I get it. There are artists whose work I look up to and their work - instead of feeling envy, I aspire to draw like them. I am always looking to learn, expand my skills and grow as an artist.
Moving to Tucson shortly and can't wait to meet you at your next event!
Good luck on the move!
My wife and I got married in Santa Fe. We were just back there in April for our 25th, just missed you.
Congratulations!
Too timid to draw in front of others.
You can also sit in a corner in kind of an invisible way. It’s how I got started too.
