  • A popular, image stabilized, fast 50mm lens for Sony mirrorless APS-C cameras. Before I tested this lens I'd seen mixed reviews of it. Let's take a close look - because it this lens is any good, it could be a great option for a lot of people.

    Thanks for the review, Christopher. I've wondered about this one (being relatively new to the Sony lineup). I've just started my review of the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DN lens, and early impressions (very early) are favorable.

    Excellent review as always Chris, thanks!! I'm so happy you have started playing with the Sony a6300 and lenses for it. Once I got my a6500 I sold off my Canon cameras. If Sony could only just up the game on their lens lineup a tiny bit, I could stop using adapted Canon EF mount lenses so much...

    I bought this lens in 2015 for 210€ from French Amazon for my old Sony NEX-3 camera. Afterwards the price was increased. It is one of the most popular lenses for APS-C e-mount cameras. It proved really sharp and excellent for its money. It can't be compared with the full frame nifty fifty 50mm f/1.8 for full frame Canon, Nikon or Sony cameras because its angle of view is much narrower.
    The minimum ISO of my Sony NEX-3 camera is 200 and the fastest shutter speed is 1/4000sec. That is two stops above the usual ISO 100 and 1/8000sec. So with this lens under daylight at f/1.8 I need an ND filter otherwise I can't have shallow depth of field.
    The optical stabilization of the sony 50mm f/1.8 isn't impressive. It has a 49mm filter thread which is typical of nearly all small e-mount lenses by Sony.
    It is affordable and a great choice after the typical retractable power zoom 16-50mm f/3.5-6 OSS kit lens by Sony. It is much sharper and above all it offer good shallow depth of field which is impossible with kit lenses.
    It has an aluminum exterior but in reality everything inside except the elements is plastic.

    This lends hands down is a must-buy for any aps-c user Sony shooter. For what you get and a cheap price this is a must-buy it will be the sharpest lens in your first line of lenses and is a great starter point. Disciplines is incredibly sharp you can find it for under $300.

      @@Merinox I did buy the 50mm f1.8 OSS. The performance is way beyond the kit zooms (55-210 and 16-50) According to DXOmark this is as best you can get for low CA and distortion. It never goes on sale though.... which might tell us something too.

    Thanks for the review . I have been looking at these, though I have many other lenses in this range including the Sigma 60mm F2.8 Art, but I am sure the OSS and better AF might make this one worth the premium.

    • @csabagrunfelder
      @csabagrunfelder 6 років тому +1

      Hi Matthew, I have both lenses and...may I say: the Sigma is a killer in sharpness. I'm not really convinced with that Sony. For my taste it is too soft (by the way the bokeh is really nice, better than the Sigma). Also a bit warmer look (camera jpg) as the Sigma. But if I want to take picture (mostly portrait) in this focal lenght range...I take always the Sigma. Also than the Sony price is maybe relatively low, it is (IMHO) not a premium category. Regards

    • @clubphotoraw8577
      @clubphotoraw8577 6 років тому +2

      Hi Csaba, i had both lenses too a few months ago. I sold the sigma because at f2.8, the image quality is really the same. Impossible to get a big winner. Too close even if the Sigma is a little bit sharper. BUT, the Sony have OSS and a better AF, and can go f1.8. So this is a really better choice for sure at this price ! For proxy pictures, it was the same results. But the stabilisation really help a lot. Now, i have the 30mm and 16mm dc dn f1.4 from Sigma. And this is just some awesome lenses ! Here some pictures from my collection with theses lenses : www.flickr.com/photos/romainchaffin/collections/72157691270681785/

    Hi I have this lens for my a6000. I also bought an A7ii and the full frame FE 50m F1.8 recently. I am hoping to get the 55mm zeiss lens at some point (read that it is one of the best) . I am now wondering whether I should return the full frame 50 mm lens and just save up for the 55 zeiss? What are your thoughts? Is that worth it. Also could I use my aps-c 50mm lens on the full frame A7ii? Or is it worth keeping the full frame 50mm as well?

    I have sigma 30mm f1.4 dc dn lens. And this one. Sony 50mm oss is slightly more snappier and accurate than sigma 30mm f1.4 dc dn
    And Cristopher, I agree with you %100 about sharpness. In other reviews comparison with Sigma 56mm, They claim this lens is way softer. Such bad photos i've seen in reviews even worse than the kit lens. But yeah, this lens is sharp. And accurate. I loved it on my a6000
    And i shoot portrait video without distortion and without hand shake. This is sth. I agree with you again.

    Funny, how your review on this lens just came in. I just closed a deal to get a used copy of the 50 f1.8 OSS last Sunday. I'll pick it up this coming Saturday locally. This lens cost U$300 in our country. Got it for less than U$200.
    I already know about this lens from other reviews and was debating of getting this or the FE 50 f1.8 so that I can still use that if I switch to 35FF bodies later on. But this seems to fit tailor made for aps-c. It's optical qualities if used in aps-c sensors make it lead a bit vs the FE version. The E version seems to be slightly sharper especially at the corners. The AF is also snappier vs the FE version. And it has OSS too which the FE does not have. With the price of the A7R iii still beyond my reach, I would be best serve getting the proper lenses for my a5100. The A7R iii is a bit too pricey in our country in introduction at U$3,500 (with an extra batt + 64gb sd card). I think I'll just wait for the A7 iii or better, till 2020, when the price of the A7R iii goes down to U$2,400 just prior to the release of the A7R iv. Add to the fact that such 42mp camera requires good lenses too, so that is another problem to solve. I can always shoot at crop mode and get about 18-19mp, still good for the 50 f1.8 OSS when the time comes.
    With that long wait, and the money involved, I think I best just concentrate on aps-c for now. Right now, I also have the 16-50 kit (which is a fine lens though slow). I also have the 55-210 for range, though I hardly use this. And the excellent 18-105 f4 OSS PZ. I don't have a fast lens, so the 50 f1.8 OSS will just fit the bill. It solve my low light or fast lens handicap, and give me a decent portrait lens too (75mm equiv). I'm well covered now, except maybe getting a 35 f1.8 OSS as well later (I should have taken that one for U$250 when it was offered to me) or a sigma 30 f1.4 DN DC. That should complete my semi-wide angle/normal and fast lens .
    And this leads me to think that this 50 f1.8 OSS and the 35 f1.8 OSS complement each other well. Maybe put a fast 12mm too if one wants the wider focal length.
    Thanks, Christopher for another fine review! :)

    This was the first lens I got for my old Sony NEX (came with the SEL16f28 which is also decent but for different purposes). For me it was great value and I still use it sometimes (but not as much as I love my 18-200). Cost/quality, AF, stabilisation and size combined make this lens one of the best buys for Sony APS-C (maybe the most practical of the prime lenses for these cameras).
    I don't have the SEL35F18, I've heard it's a popular buy too but I have the 30 macro, so I'm not sure I can justify it. It's also substantially more expensive.

    I really like this lens on my A6000. In fact, it's probably the sharpest lens I own. I love the bokeh it makes. I've seen busy bokeh some of my legacy lenses make. Now, I have an A7ii, this lens works amazingly well on it in APS-C mode. I will eventually get the SEL50F18F lens, but maybe I don't need it.

      I can tell you.. sigma 30 1.4 more sharpest than sony 35 1.8 even at aperture 1.4. I used it in sony a6k.

      AF speed sony a little bit more fast, accuracy sony better (sometimes sigma missfocused but rarely), and noise depends on your camera. cmiiw..

    I’m new to photography and I recently bought the Sony a6000, I see that there are two different Sony f/1.8 50mm camera, the cheaper one being $250 and the other priced at $300, what’s the difference? Is it because one has a manual focus and the other doesn’t?

    • @howieman5
      @howieman5 6 років тому +1

      Hey Shay, so he has another video on the FE 50mm f/1.8 which is $250 that I think you are most likely talking about. The difference in this one is you are paying for the image stabilization (OSS feature), which is what the $50 difference is and I think it's well worth it. I say that because OSS adds extra versatility in what you can shoot, and a big plus if you shoot any video. I shoot a lot of moving subjects, and I don't always have a tripod, so I went with the $300 in this video. I shoot also with an a6000, and this was the third lens I got for it and I'm very pleased. Take a look at the other video he posted, but I recommend the 50mm f/1.8 OSS two thumbs up, especially if you are starting out and looking to upgrade from kit lens.

      Howard Shin and I actually bought the FE lens today! I’m very impressed with it, me being a beginner, the loud focus noise doesn’t really bother me at all. And I will most likely just shoot portraits or just pictures in general, I(probably) won’t be shooting any videos at all.

    So this lens on a full frame sony cam will actually be 75 mm?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  5 років тому +1

      You're confused. This lens is only for APS-C cameras, where its equivalent full-frame focal length will be 75mm. On a full-frame camera you'll just see lots of vignetting around the edges

  • @loonaya
    @loonaya 3 роки тому +1

    Good review! My findings from shooting with this lens are the same. I have a Sony a6500 with Sigma 16mm 1.4, Sigma 30mm 1.4, and this Sony 50mm 1.8 lens.
    This lens is by far the weakest of the three. I agree that it starts getting sharp at about f4. When aperture is wide open, sharpness is similar to a better phone camera which fakes the sharpness with raised clarity, but when you zoom in it's not really sharp.
    This is of course a problem in low light when I need to open the aperture, or if I want really really shallow depth of field,
    cause in that case, even the part of the image that is in focus is not really in focus, it's just the least blurry.
    Like you said, it doesn't really have the character, and bokeh is so so.
    If Sigma made 50mm lens in the same class as 16mm and 30mm lenses(which are similar price range as the sony 50mm 1.8), that lens
    would've been much better than this Sony lens.

    What will be it's focal length? 50mm Or 1.5x50mm =75mm on my a6000?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  5 років тому +2

      You own an APS-C camera. Therefore, you must always always multiply the focal length by 1.5x for the full-frame equivalent. So yes, 50mm x 1.5 = 75mm
