Thank you for another great video Christopher. I have always used your reviews as My base when thinking of buying New gear. I own a a6400 that I have spoiled with the Laowa 9mm f2.8, Sigma 16mm f1.4, Tamron 11-20mm f 2.8, Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 and Sony 70-350mm f 4.5-6.3 - still missing Sigma 56mm f1.4 and Laowa 65mm f2.8 (macro). I also have a fullframe lineup for My Sony a7iii and Sony a7riii. So hitting your UA-cam channel Mr. Frost have been an expensive experience. But your recommondations have never failed. They are just spot on.

I think you should've mentioned the Sony 55-210mm lens in the first section considering it's one of the best value for money lenses on the Sony E mount if you get one used (from ebay or elsewhere). I've seen it go for 100$, for a sharp lens with optical stabilization, that's a steal!

      That 55 1.8 is a great lens, just like the Sony/Zeiss 35 2.8.
The latter is the equal of the 55 2.8, however it seems largely ignored. Superb imaging quality, small compact size and, for me, the ideal street and general use lens. Don't understand why it is so largely ignored?

One problem with video like this, that it's produced by profession photographers. But sony apsc system is mainly usedby amateurs, casual man, that migrate from smartphone and need versatile and compact system. Professionals concentrate on technical characteristics like sharpness from corner to corner and ignore size and weight.
Inspired by video like this, for example I made mistake choice some time ago - buy sigma 16f.4 for low light. Really it's very good lense, but I don't use it, because of it's size and weight I don't carry it with me.
So, universal lenses for amateurs must be compact, light, have universal zoom range, optical quality not critical at all (it's not a microscope) and most important - OSS. IMO, OSS is more important for universal walk around travel zoom lenses than f2.8. Hyped zoom lenses with F2.8 don't work in low light, because on APSC camera one stop doesn't really help, but OSS really give 3-4 stops and it's enough for late evening stills in most travel scenes (static scenes, architecture). For dynamic low light scenes F2.8 don't help, primes F1.8 and faster must be.
So I upgrade from kit to Sony 16-70f4 OSS - it's really the best universal compact glass from sunrise to dusk. 18-135 OSS also good choice, but it size is huge, for me size is matters.

I have the Sony OSS 18-200mm zoom lens. It's pretty good, but very bread and butter. I use it for corporate interview work.
Not much barrel distortion at 18mm. 🙂 It came as a kit lens with my FS100. Which I love to bits (Super 35 sensor - takes APS-C lenses well).

From a long follower, I got the a7r new when it came out but there was no wide lenses so i got the 20mm f2.8 pancake APSC lens and use crop mode, with 36MP I accepted the loss it involved. It brought the images back to APSC MB resolution. The lens is tiny and can delivers excellent results on my a6000. I have the Sigma trio but I choose the Sony 20mm against the fabulous, big and heavy Sigma 16mm for fun shooting.

Shooting Sony A6300 & SEL 16-50 & SEL 55-210 since August 2018. I´m very ready to replace both of these lenses because both aren´t really sharp or fast. Tamron 18-300 would be amazing for aircraft spotting which I do mostly. Sigma 15-50 mm looks like a great replacement for SEL 16-50!

Recently Sony and other manufacturers have spoilt us really with e mount lenses.
I shoot currently with a A6300 and astro modded A6500.
Just recently sold quite few lenses (my beloved Ziess Touit 12mm and the 50mm f1.8 amongst them) and moved onto to newer FE glass including the new Samyang 135mm f1.8. Maybe some do think it's a waste to put a FE lens on an aps-c but as I shoot mainly astro and aurora the 135mm and 14mm GM are my new astro wide and narrow lenses and it's where I really need a technically great lens.
I then keep the 10-18mm F4 /18-105 f4 and the 70-350mm f4.5-6.3 in my bag to cover most focal lengths for landscape photography.

  • @scs6757
    @scs6757 2 роки тому +3

Great video as usual. The Tamron 18-200 is now on clearance for $400 here in the US, so it's now fairly reasonable priced for a super zoom with all its compromises. I've really enjoyed the Sony full frame 50mm 2.8 Macro lens on my a6600. Had the Sigma 18-50 2.8 been available a couple years ago, I may have gone that route over the 50mm macro since the little Sigma can still focus fairly closely. However, the Sony 50mm macro will work on a full frame body if I upgrade in the future. I've also been impressed with how well the Sony 70-350 G and Sigma 100-400 handle on the A6600, so one of those will be my next lens. Perhaps you could do a part 2 of this video exploring macro/semi-macro, longer telephoto, and include FE lenses that are equally at home on the APS-C bodies.

If you search something in the 300mms there is no better lens than the sony 70-350.
I own it and cant recommend it enough. Its incredible in every way:
      - incredible sharpness at all focal lengths wide open, except at 350mm (stop down to f8 for extreme perfect sharpness there)
      - good minimum focus distance, Butterflys and larger insects can be easily photohraphed
      - super lightweight for what it is (a fullframe 525mm equivalent which weighs about 600g)
      - the weather sealing ks no joke. I took my a6400 with the sony 70-350 out at temperatures below -10degrees, it was snowing, I had no protection and yet it just performed awesome as always !
      - the autofucs is stellar! I can focus through extremly narrow trees with the fitting af mode👍
      - it is black, which helps to stay incognito in comparison to all white full frame tele lenses
      - I got it new for under 500€ because of sonys cashback action
      One bonus tip:
I used to have a "cheaper" lens filter for protection which led to lines in the bokeh on this lens. Better buy a better one if you want smooth blur with clean bokeh.
If you have any question concerning this lens feel free to ask.
I would like to ask you: Do you think the Tamron 17-70 is light enough to use it as everyday lens or do you think it is too heavy. And: How do you like the vc stabilization for video - is it a huge improvement vs a non stabilized lens like the sigma 16mm ?

If I would do things over I would start with the new 35-150mm 2-2.8 from Tamron and that's it lol. Maybe upgrade with a 200-600mm and supplement with a 85mm 1.4 for portraits. The 85mm 1.8 is nice and light but the background is usually too busy compared to my 135mm 1.8.

I have a Sony a6400 and bought a sigma 56 and th sony 70-350, also because of your reviews.
Now Im super indecisive if I first buy the Tamron 11-20 or the Tamron 17-70/sigma 18-50
There are so many nice options on sony apsc, what I would love to see in future would be a lens like 12-30 or something like that. I wouldnt really care about the fstop, I just would love to have the flexibility of having a lens which can do ultra wide, wide and portrait with reasonable blur. Though I think this is physically pretty hard to build - one can dream though 😅
And the lens I would look forward most to would be an apsc super telephoto lens. I would love to see something with more reach than the 70-350 optimized for apsc or a 300mm focal length with a better aperture.
Im really hyped for the future and hope Sony wont be lazy and brings out a new apsc this or next year.

The 16-50mm 2.8 "basic b***h" kit lens is low key one of the best lens for the E mount.
    Its overlooked advantage is portability.
Throw it onto a A5000/6000 series or even a A7/R/S series and you have a portable camera that can rival any compact camera with more functionality than any of them.
I also think that the best overall lens for the APS-C E mount system is the Sony 35mm f1.8.
Its may not be quite as sharp as the sigma 30 at f1.4 but its much more compact, the autofocus is smoother/faster/quieter, much more compact & lighter and the lens is stabilised, which IMHO gives the overall win to the Sony.

Great video!! I'm sure I've watched at close to 60-80 of your videos as I have bought/sold and changed systems .. My first mirrorless digital camera was the Sony NEX-6 with the older kit zoom. You were right,,most Sony APS-C primes were not good -- The 16mm was not sharp at any setting--I tried 3 copies. Although you alluded to them ,,I'm surprised you didn't mention the Sigma primes specifically-- especially the 19mm, 30mm, and the 60mm 2.8s. Really great lenses for the price and, of course, the 3 1.4 lenses are even better--although 3 times more. Had the newer zooms you mentioned come out earlier I might have had more faith in the Sony crop sensor line up. As it was in 2016ish,,I left for the Panasonic Leica lenses in Micro 4/3s..

As usual;. a stand out review. It certainly assists given that you have owned a small Sony apsc for some years".
I just find the extra heft, yes, it is minimal compared to putting a FF 70-200 2.8 IS on my a64000 ( and the a6000 that is just too competent, apart from IAF to sell), compared to the relatively recently released Sigma 18-50 2.8. Also agree, the native Sony 50 1.8 OSS is a one of the very, very few value for money lens for the Sony apsc line up.
I like shooting landscape type shots, and given the relative lack of decent glass ( not a fan of the Song 10-18), I just use my enduring and menu friendly Canon 6D with Canon L wide angle glass and several third party primes.
All in all, excellent and value focused round up.

If you are on the cheap, get an adapter.
If you have lenses from a DSLR system, you will find an adapter. Dumb adapters are just a spacer and a mount usually cheap, get one that is metal. Autofocus adapters are more expensive and usually list compatible lenses. Worth it if you have lenses.
I got a viltrox autofocus adapter for Nikon. All af-s and af-c lenses, including my sigmas work pretty good.
You won't have native zoom performance for sure, but with my nikor 35mm dx, nikor 50mm fx or af-s 24-70 2.8 I've only had a little more hunting than I would natively.
You won't get autofocus in video mode, thought. Which is no problem thanks to the great live focus peaking.
I've got dumb adapters as well which all work wonder for manual focus lenses.

I have it. It’s excellent, but it, along with the 16-55 G lens are more pro level, both quite expensive and probably not the first step to upgrading your Sony APS-C kit lens.

Sony APS-C needs a COMPACT quality 23mm f2 (35mm equivalent) and 18mm f2 (28mm equivalent) small everyday carry lenses that can compete with Fuji and the Leica CL...We've been waiting 10 years.

I have a 16-70 or so MM Zeiss... but sadly I can't get an aperture below f/4 and there's some edge barrel roundness but my real chore is the focus (old camera -6000 instead of 6100) has some focus issues where I'll be stuck having to snap multiple photos of the same scene to get some non blurred shots.
The one you literally called terrible :(

I'm very surprised you didn't include the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS, my second-favourite ASP-C lens only to the Sigma 56mm. I find the rendering much nicer than the Sigma 30, it has OSS, the chromatic aberration is better controlled, and the autofocus is in a different league entirely, esp. in low light (and yes, commenters, I've got the firmware update). It isn't quite as sharp, which maybe explains its absence, though I've never been disappointed.

    • @MrMartinek99

I had Sony 35f1.8 for few months and only point I agree with you is fast AF. Also compact size is positive of this lens. I sold it early, because I didn't like rendering at f1.8-f2.4, which is kind of bad at fast prime. I can compare only with absolutely stunning Sigma 56, which also have aberations much better corrected. I had Sigma 30mm only for a few days from my friend, but I would definitely prefer Sigma (for photo shooting).

Also a big fan of the 35mm f/1.8 OSS! I prefer the wider field of view as compared to the Sony 50mm, and I love the creative mood I get when I have to zoom with my feet. Besides the kit, the other lens I own is the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 which I can also recommend.

Why is the Sigma 18-50/2.8 not being included into this List? For 500 bucks, it's the best APS-C Zoom lens, in terms of price & performance, -size. Much better than the Sony "Zeiss" 16-70/F4 ZA, for real. Greetings.
