- Today we go for a first flight in our abandoned 2006 Zodiak 601XL SLSA that we bought for just $16,000. Will there be issues? Will it fly okay after sitting for 8 years? However there is a lot of work that has to happen before this plane plane can safely (and legally) take to the skies. Enjoy this part 2 video of us restoring this old bird and rebuilding it to an airworthy state!

@21:38 You got me good. Nothing like getting the hart going at 6 am.
Me too
Meee Toooo
Damn, I had to stop the video to change my under ware!
I really like the newer "hands on" type videos for these past two. Fun watching the guys do all the work. Thank you for being transparent about plane costs and such, makes wanting to follow the channel so relevant! Great job!
More fun than watching rich kids buy stuff? 😂
HOWEVER, in MY opinion, I would've changed the oil and filter and added 'Lucas Oil Treatment' in it instead, 'cause it causes oil to go where there is heat, (from friction, rings, bearings, valve guides, oil pump), and coates those areas with oil and Lucas Oil Treatment, lubricating and cooling those areas. ALSO, when the engine sits when not running, the Lucas coates the bearings and cylinders with a film of oil, so that when the engine is restarted after a long period of time, there's no dry areas of oil. It's already prelubed as oil will find its way to the oil pan and drain away from the bearings, rings and valve guides and momentarily will be metal to metal before the oil is pumped through the engine after cold starts. I put Lucas Oil Treatment in ALL of my vehicles, tractor, motorcycles, even riding lawn mower, 'cause it'll double the life of the engines as long as the oil and Lucas is changed religiously as well as the oil and oil, air and fuel filters. Compression comes up a bit more with Lucas in my engines, as it coates the cylinders as well. My engines also run a bit cooler too.
Lucas states that if their product causes your engine to fail, they will buy you a new engine. That'd how much they stand behind their product, so that's good enough for me and I've only had good things with adding it in ALL of my engines. They also have a fuel Treatment product that works great for keeping carburetors and fuel injectors clean of carbon build up. 👍
Am I the only one that almost died with the Spider Jump?
Jump scares never get me. That one was so completely unexpected that it dud, but at least now I know not to trust this guy. Angry upvoted.
Nearly died... My wife asked why I almost leaped off the couch 😅
Yes. Do not almost die every time you are surprised. It's not worth it.
I hit my arm really bad on my table. That was so unexpected.😂
Now this is the kind of content I love to see. The kind that is more than just seeing someone jump into a plane and fly which is fun and all but seeing planes being taken apart, repaired, tested, put back together and flown is awesome to watch. Keep em comin' boys!
Great video, I learned a lot watching you work on a plane that is so similar to mine. A few items to note:
1. The canopy struts should be mounted with the rod pointing down so the lube will run down to the seal and not let it dry out. I had to replace mine that were mounted the same way as yours.
2. I replaced the nose gear bungie with the puck system that Zenith offers and so far it has been great.
3. The number three cylinder on my O-200 had two intake valve rocker arms instead of 1 intake and 1 exhaust rocker. The exhaust rocker has an oil weep hole so with two intake rockers it wasn't getting enough lube and the exhaust valve springs failed. I would suggest checking to make sure you have a weep hole on each exhaust valve rocker.
4. It looks like you don't have an oil cooler. Mine does but it didn't have anything directing air flow to it and my oil temps were getting high in the summer while climbing so I split the airflow to the alternator to provide some air to the oil cooler.
5. I installed a Donaldson P10-7150 air filter which has a nice white paper element that makes it easy to see when it is dirty. I had to trim the corners on it to avoid interference with the cowl.
What do you fly
This guy Zeniths.
21:35 not even gonna lie, you got me there
mf gotta stop with the spiders
You guys were so lucky to have Larry for this project. His knowledge and personality seem amazing! Love these types of videos!
Did I just get Rick Rolled on an aviation UA-cam channel?
*Ha!, ha! Jeff, you know how the YT game is played. Cheers!*
Man… it’s a beautiful thing to see this bird come back to life. Congrats to all the team.
the plane flys so nice in case anybody wants to know.
That was great to see a good aircraft fly again. It looks like a fun and inexpensive way to go flying. Congratulations on your methodical servicing and your attention to all the details.
I really enjoyed the 2 videos so far. I'm a retired A/P, worked for the NAVY on their Aircraft mostly on the P-3, but I did work on a Blue Angle #7, also worked on EAB-6 and S-3s. I mainly did sheet metal work om the P-3's fuel cells. Enjoyed your work and making the A/c FOD free.
Hey ! Nice plane and so glad for you see it flying like a charm.......Good Luck for you and all that was involved in getting it airborne
Great job crew, looking forward to seeing more.
From all the projects you were involved and they were many this was my favorite one. Thank you for sharing.
It’s the cheapest, yet by far the fan favorite!
Great find and another great video! Keep knocking it out of the park! You three make a great crew to watch!
Love everything you boys touch! More more more 🎥
Love this series can't wait for more aviation content. I would love to see this plane get a custom interior. Maybe even add some glass instruments.
I'm really digging this Zenith! Another great video guys! I'm loving the length of the videos too!
Awesome, thank you!
Fuck, that spider again got me good. A second time 😂
Me too bro. Lol
lol @@rightsidelanechoice7702
Same here !!
😂😂😂
So cool...more like this....very interesting
Looking very nice.😊😊 Thank you for sharing a cute aircraft.😊
Can't wait for the flight back! Cool little series you're doing with this plane.
More to come!
Brilliant content guys can't wait for part 3 and the flight home.
full break down for sure!! dope series
Love it that you arent afraid to talk actual costs and value. That makes it relevant to the real world, so many channels hold that back. So yes for a cost breakdown video.
I love watching this type of video. Bringing older planes or cars back to life gives me a lot of joy. Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thumbs Up! 👍 Thanks for sharing. And, YES, SAFETY FIRST!! ✈️
I really enjoy your videos keep up the great job! Professional Pilot Steve.
I really enjoyed this video! I'm ready for the next one.
The cool thing about you guys doing this work yourselves is you really get to know the plane, sure you could pay someone to do it but you get so much more out of it when you do it yourself. Keep up the great content.
Loved this video. Very nice aircraft.
This was an awesome video, can’t wait to see the next one! Definitely do a full breakdown on cost and also would love to see some mods on it in another video. Thanks for taking us along! 🤙🏽🤙🏽
If that o-200 is anything like mine, it will spit out anything more than 4 quarts. You’ll thing you’re consuming oil if you keep it at 5 because it’ll drop to 4 in a flight or two. However, once it gets down to its happy spot around 4, you MIGHT have to add one quart before the next oil change.
magnificent! I really enjoy watching your videos as a new pilot (two years in total), we all can see that you are in good hands, your friend is a good pilot and a very educated mechanic, well done!
There is no doubt that this is an instructive video and I look forward to seeing your return flight. After extensive work on the plane, I'm sure you know it to the level of the screw.
And congratulations on the successful purchase... Good luck!💪
Amazing job on this! I think you will enjoy flying this the most of any airplane you own. There is something to be said for simplicity.
Love this series!
Give a detailed breakdown of all the costs including people’s labor and parts. Great video content

Well done to the Team, Larry is a Legend.
Nice flying. Good Job
Corvair engine, hell yeah!
I love how N106WL fires right up, like it's eager to get airborne. That engine sounds GOOD. Some of the other aviation rescue content providers are going to be jealous of this save!
Right! She fires right up everytime!
I love you guys content, Im just a guy thats interested in aviation, but I love watching everything that you guys share on youtube. Thank you
love Larry ! down to earth kind of guy ..
You totally scored on this airplane! Was there any chance that any of the old air filter was sucked into the carb when you first tested it? It looked pretty bad when you removed it. Great video!
I wondered the same thing!
Guaranteed they would have had a peek in there and/or changed the fuel filter...
Yeah - no they didn't. They started it and it ate the filter - at least that is how it was edited to look - although that won't really harm it, it is taking all the crap its been keeping out of the engine into the engine it one lump. The problem with will-it-start videos is that you can wreck the engine with a few basic things that aren't shown to be checked (but hopefully they are). Obviously, check that it turns and sounds ok, check for anything in the induction system, take all the plugs out, spin over on starter until you see oil pressure and stop if you don't. I would also flush the fuel lines and check the carb because schmoo will get in there when its been stood and will not do it any good (they did replace the fuel lines). I would also have a hard time trusting an engine thats been stood suddenly pressed into service, would check it very carefully, check the screens every few flights. If its in a place where corrosion isn't an issue then great - where I live it would be rusted solid by lunchtime.
@dr_jaymz Yeah and after the oilchange they didn't start it to shut it off again to recheck the oil level. They just flew out with it with to little oil in it as he made it sound.. It's a car engine, you always start after oil change, then shut off shortly after. Top up oil to max before driving it.
You guys are awesome, great content. Much more interesting to enjoy. What about a breakdown of cockpit layout inside Larry's experimental taildragger.....
Thanks you you program it's excelent ! God bless You
Yes on video with full costs involved. You should also do a video on selling it.
Larry is a treasure!! So. knowledgeable!
This channel is the favorite you guys run. Car stuff is cool also but I love the planes.
I know nothing about airplanes or aviation, so I have no idea what you guys talk about but I love planes and I love this videos
Wonderful video, a real joy seeing this airplane brought back to life. Good thing you had Larry to help out. Larry added at least $4,000 value to your purchase with the rescue and annual inspections. Larry was very thorough. I admire his attention to detail also his methodical approach to maintaing aircraft. I hope Larry was compensated for his huge effort.
Such a great series
Glad the algo recommended this. Loving the content.
Awesome. Please do video of costs breakdown
Think I would go with a double bungy setup! And Larry is a great help to get it done... Also, would like to know what was the approximate cost of getting it legally airborne.
You should recheck your compression with a warm engine.
That’s the plan
I'm very excited getting to go on this journey and seeing this plane get brought back to life!!😎
That’s Awesome!! I want one
That plane was such a good find! 😃👌🏻
I think so too!
That F'n spider gets me every time!
Great video!
Awesome video
woohoo! So good seeing this bird in the air!
Great job guys👍🏼
Love watching your success I’m a huge fan of you and Christian this should be a nice profit on the sale.
Yes. I like the real cost videos. Thanks
Very cool of Larry to help you lads out. You guys got a heck of a deal on that airplane. That is a really nice plane. Looking forward to the next video on it.
Thanks 👍
Nice!!! I Love Zenith aircrafts! I have a almost done Stol CH-750! Tnks for sharing! Following now!! Gustavo from Brazil!
Nice work.
Not only did you scare the crap out of me on the 1st one but yep, you got me twice!!!
Please in the next video incorporate all the cost , parts , time etc.... You guy's have done amazing work....wish i could have been there!!!!! enjoy your new plane !!!!!
Thanks for sharing. many blessings
nice work
Came across part one, staying for all three parts and whatever comes next! Good job brother
A couple of years ago I took and RV6 that had been sitting for 8 years and returned it to flying status. It is very satisfying to accomplish something like that.
would love to see a breakdown of the cost to bring it current.
Yes please!
Great content.
Stop the spider already... got me twice!!!
Dear Jeffrey and Christian,
That this Zodiac CH601X L SLSA was a factory built plane makes the plane a lot more safe. Informed with a friend of mine and these sorts of planes are still allowed to fly in Europe. Only the kid built types have a permanently stop in flying. Great to see how well this plane still is flying after she got some love. I look forward to your next vlog and send you love from the Netherlands
Very wrong. My homebuilt and many others are still flying
Superb
Great vid, with great presentation. No, you don’t talk too much…very intuitive explanation of what you’re doing!
I really love this airplane.
I'm curious how much it cost to get the plane air worthy after the initial purchase. I'd like to see a itemized breakdown of those costs.
21:37 Crap! you got me!
i saw that spider coming, didnt fool me this time!
Damn, got me BOTH times with the spider 🤣😂
Awesome!!!
*To be precise, you are calling it a "compression test" when actually it is a cylinder leakdown test. The process is much more revealing than a simple "spin it and read a pressure gauge" compression test. Normal reference pressure is 100 PSI, at least for non-avn engines. Makes logging cylinder leakage percentages so much easier. Cheers!*
Most aviation engines use 80psi as the baseline. Minimum psi is manufacturer specific. Continental uses current atmospheric pressure, JR’s concern about it being below 60psi wasn’t really an issue.
Yes please, full costs breakdown!
My heart skipped a beat when I saw what you got!!! this looks like a winner 16grand???? Incredible!!!
so here i am .. 45 years old .. feel like i did nothing with my life, and then i find you guys ,, buy an airplane restore it and fly it ... loooove it, anyways .. future video .. fly it up to Larry from Ammo nyc .. have him detail it and shine like a new penny .. trust me it will :D .. just an idea
It flies like a beauty
Love the long form content! Pro tip: poor the oil with the spout on the high side for better flow and control. I know it seems counterintuitive but they’re designed for it. Can’t wait for the next one!
Piss off with that damn spider gag!🤣🤣🤣 Got me again!
What you did with this plane, I have done several times with antique motorcycles, fun, keeps me young!
Nice progress in this video! Add me to list of people who really enjoy seeing you get hands-on with the planes! Not only do we get to follow along, but you guys are gaining so much knowledge that will make you better pilots. Can't wait for the next installment!
Thanks! Will do!
Awesome video …. Time for you guys to become pilots now 👍🏻
Thanks for a GREAT VIDEO...
LARRY IS THE MAN......
I LIKE THE CUT OF HIS GIB....
PRESS ON LARRY!!

great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Cost breakdown to bring current will be great, please! Thank you for bringing us along!!!
