I wanted to try an alternative to grow lights so i tested out the Barrina LED T5 8 pack of led lights. They actually worked surprisingly well for plants. I was only using two strips per plant section but if i needed more lights I could increase the amount. These lights are absolutely perfect for shelving setups because they are low profile and don't produce a lot of heat.

Those lights works. Great for all leafy greens and seedlings if close enough. Cheap and effective. My tomato seedlings reached 2 feet and started to flower even if the lights are 6000k. Impressive.

Hey, your videos on plants are so informative! Do you think it'd be interesting to make a 101 on growing lights? I've been researching for a while now, but it's been very hard to find more simple and beginner-level videos about grow lights =/ I can only find reviews of different models and tips for assembling and optimization... and I don't even know if I SHOULD get grow lights.
I don't know if any light bulb I have at home could be used as a grow light or if to make any difference it must be one of these super potent ones, or pink hahaha. I'm really disoriented about the basics, like energy consumption, cost, efficiency, etc. I have windows but I don't feel they're enough for my houseplants.
I think this is the kind of content that would help most people get the 101 basics to start thinking about buying and putting up grow lights, since it's easy to find these simple guides about gardening, but not about artificial lighting!

I did some additional searching after buying these, There are some T8 models with more wattage that might work even better. Also there are some t5 models that have clear covers so you dont have to cut the diffuser off. So far after a few months tho these lights are kkepign my houseplants happy. Dont know how well they would work for some veggies. If you buy some get the ones with a clear cover or try the t8 larger ones too
Techplant , Thanks so much for your reply! I appreciate the extra info . I would use them for succulents . I have over 100 succulents . Been using T5HO fixtures. Tried the red blue LED’s and got eye pain and headaches too . How would you compare them to T5HO fluorescent for plant growth and electric bill ?

Revolutions , Awesome! Thanks so much for the update. I’d love to hear how it works for you . I got a 5,000 K light about a month ago. It’s a DuroLux with 8 strips of white LED . My succulents actually like it . Your video was very helpful. I also have been using the red and blue barrina slights with the reflector for 2 months. I’ve had succulents flower and grow tons of babies under them . And my pink moonstones got super pink under them . I’ll update ya on how mine do under the 5,000k led as well . Glad to hear from ya 😊
@@littlebeebs1 what wattage of the barrinas did you get? I've been looking at those lights and im thinking about going with the full spectrum 3500k yellows/white ones as well as some generic 3000k led shop lights to balance my spectrum better with the 5000ks that I already have. Just to clarify though I'm not the maker of this video, just some guy that is also interested in lights for seedling racks and house plants. Just had a look at the 5500k durolux 8 strip. It seems better then the 6500k model that they also sell. Right now I'm doing a test seeing what the minimum I can get away with for as far as lights and watts. Currently trying two 4 foot 20 watt LED 5000k in a 4 x 1 space but I'm speculating I need 3 tubes at 20 watts each for decent growth on veg seedlings in that space. Only 2 weeks into the test on peppers and just started a few brassicas that I know go very leggy quick in the window sill.
Could you do a PPFD test on them please?

I’ve gotten fairly good results from the led grow lights from hd in my planted aquarium and as well as just plants.
Nice! I have more experience with the pink style, but these are way better on my eyes!
I’ve gotten tons of growth with low light aquarium plants such as duckweed, hornwort, guppy grass, and frogbit. Does anyone think these could be used to grow low light orchids such as Phalaenopsis or Paphiopedilums?

lol, i had one pinned on my wall jammed into a bracket that holds curtain rods so it would hold up one of my plant fixtures at one point

I bought almost the exact same lights recently. started a bunch of pepper seedlings and tomatos and such. no leggy seedlings at all. seem to be working great. my cat grass is growing super fast

They now have their lights for sale without the diffuser. They must of made them stronger because my lights have doubled the size of my plants, and succulents are very happy, in a month of having them.
yeah they made actual grow lights, the ones im using are meant to light a room

Interesting lights, the lumens output for the wattage is huge compared to everything at my hardware store and can be got in Australia (where I am) for a decent price ($85 AUD).
One thing in your video you mentioned that you specifically wanted the light to go straight down and not bleed out, well this ties in with a curiosity I have at the moment, basically can the fresnel panel from an lcd monitor/tv be used to help with that. Size could definitely be a problem, but from what Ive seen you could prolly batch a few together. Its just that if it did help, the panels are widely available and could be gotten free in a lot of cases (I know where an outside tech recycle bin is, will be hitting it up in a couple of weeks). I dont have money or am growing anything so hard for me to do. Would love someone with a PAR reader to test it. Anyway, just an idea.

I've these set up over a 6 foot planted aquarium for close to 2 years now. They've worked quite well so far, probably would better without the diffusers. Thinking about trying a combo of their white grow lights and RB lights soon.
hey any updates? How you think these compare to a real T5 Ho fixtures? they're only like 15w so im not sure about the strength and PAR rating./
@@gallardo20000 real t5 would be better for sure, however considering cost of these, they're not bad. My 125g is fairly low tech so crazy lights aren't required. About half of them have failed over the last 6 months or so. ~3 years for decent lighting at $80 (back then) is pretty good. I will probably try a similar product again, but this time with 2 banks of 4 2' lights or 3' lights, with full spectrum "white" and some red/blue grow lights.
Barrina now makes actual grow lights in full spectrum yellow and blurple, I don't want the real difference is between them and their regular led shop lights though. I use the regular kind exclusively to grow Kale and Lettuce.
im over the blurple, ill have to checkout the other "white" ones. Im guessing its a specific color temperature maybe 4500k instead of 6000k I don't know. thanks for letting me know about them tho. Id love to see your leafy greens setup

I thought about that, but i dont have any decent clear material that im sure wont start on fire if it gets too hot. Im always really nervous about these cheap lights and their safety

I bought some generic non grow lights too. 5000k tho with the clear lense. After doing some tests though I think the diffuser is better because these lights are best used within 4 inches and without a diffuser on the light doesn't spread as evenly at close range.
Good point! I think if you are using them on veggies or seedling and you have them close like that the diffuser is better. I have mine kind of high because they are for some basic tropical plants so i ripped it off. Very good observation tho. I didnt consider the diffuser being left on based on proximity!
@@TechplantChannel yea, the reason i noticed it was because with the clear lenses I was using two, 22 watt, 4 footers, rated at 2200 lumens each, at about 9 inches apart from each other and at a distance of about 5-7 inches from the plants. Long story short my ppfd didn't really go up much or as much as I expected, It was just covering a bigger surface area and didn't really stack the intensity.. Roughly 100 umol/s. I added a 3rd light which now put them every 3 inches apart and finally the light started to stack a bit better. Roughly 200 umols/s at 5-7 inches from plant canopy. However at close range within 4 inches not much difference in ppfd with a clear lense. 1 light puts out about the same as 2 or 3. Just covers a bigger surface area. With that said, peppers are doing good under em.
Can you do an update on these lights? Have any of them burnt out or stopped working? or did the plants end up not doing well? I want to get these for overwintering some houseplants in the fall
Sure, so far they are all functioning great and my plants seem to be doing great!

Was looking how to get rid of the plastic tube on it. Seems pretty easy to do but i would wear cut resistant gloves.

Im just about to try out tissue culture for my monsteras and peperomias but I dont know that much about lighting and how to think for the first few weeks of growth (callus stage tissue culture) maybe these would work? Im trying to find something that has a light value close to natural (sun) so that I can have it visable in my livingroom. Im going to put them in my old aquarium and watch them grow so dont want any purple light. Really like your videos!
Barrina makes a newer actual grow light! they are a higher wattage and will work much better, I would look for those!

Yup my houseplants are doing very well. Still have not tested of vegetables tho. For another 20bucks you can get the t8 version with clear coverings that are double the output
Ive had barely any success starting tomatoes under these lights. Not quite sure why...Any feeback would be great, i.e how far those lights should be from seedlings?
for veggies i would say you gotta have them like an inch away. If you have options i would buy the barrina grow lights they sell that are almost 4x the output. OR go with an actual grow pannel like spider farmer or viparspectra. for sure, you would need to screw the brackets in or do something to secure them

I use this for cactus and succulents about 4-8 inches above and they provide excellent light. All my succulents have that beautiful color to them u see in the advertisements and none of my succulents stretched throughout the year. I been using these for almost 2 yrs now and just bought another set for my outdoor plants i plan on bringing in for the winter. Now im alil confused how high i should hang for different light types such as bright light, bright indirect light, ect. If anyone has any help please let me know.
I have even stronger versions by barrina now and i keep em at all different heights, im starting to think they are almost over kill for some of my plants tho. And yeah they work really well on succulents I still am using the lights in this video they work so good

@@TechplantChannel I'd be a little paranoid using those as grow lights, in case of a fire, barrinas and all the other cheap brand shop lights seem to have no certification s behind them. Also the lumen and watt output I imagine is embellished. Should do a test and download a lux app on your phone if you could. Let me know what lux your getting a different heights.
@@GuitarLessonCharts I bought them for my plants and they did not react good and i had them in use for 4 months! The plants all started looking sick and some leaf loss 😳 so took them down
@@a.m.rootedinbuffalo331 I ended up buying some from a local hardware store. About 10$ extra per light then that off of Amazon. Been running em for about 3-4 months now. 5000k spectrum work great. Grew lettuce and some other veg I tested. Using em on my succulents now. Lots of growth. In your case the lights were probably to far away from the plants to have any significant impact.

They are workign well! However, i would reccomend their new grow light focused lights. They are a litte more expensive, but twice the power and you dont have to cut off the diffuser. These ones in this video have worked fine but the new barrina grow light ones work way better!
@@TechplantChannel I ended up purchasing them. I really like it so far. I too want to remove the diffuser. But I’m leaving it on for now as it sits right above my indoor plants maybe 6” and I really like it. I’ll def check out the lights you mentioned as well.
Can you tell us how to care for plants when you have AC in your house?

The LED Diodes gives a laser beam stream you usually cant see but enough of them illuminates the spread out of spectrum light overall of desired range of spacing. Its best to use a wide box device over the sticks but you can use sticks as long as its 6 or more. 2 to 3 sticks only good for small desk plants....
Too close to the diodes like an inch or 2 too close, will burn a hole thru foliage or leave where as you can see how the lasers work thru the hole mark as it has happend to me...

For myself, I think I would just buy two sets of the light strips rather than McGyver them. But that’s just me.

These lights DO NOT WORK. I've tried them and were very dissapointed with them. After two weeks of having these, my aroids did not like them. The new growth being pushed out looked wrinkly and small, some growth wouldnt even open with the light intensity it proivded. I think what ive learned is that the wattage for these are too low to be viable for plant growth. I would honestly invest in something else, something with quality when it comes to LED lights.
Really? My Monstera Deliciosa and adansonii are doing well under them. same with some begonias, raphidaphora and pepperomia. Did you cut the shielding off? they make even higher wattage lights too if they arent working for you
@@TechplantChannel Yeah, ive slid the translucent diffusers off the housing to provide a direct light. The plants are just not acquiring enough light to sustain proper growth with them. Again, the new growths were weak and wrinkly. They are all at least 6-10" from the light source, which is reasonable enough distance. My p. hederaceum and micans are fine with it, most of my other common plants are doing just okay with it, however my gloriosum, other rare philos and rare anthuriums are not a fan of these lights. I don't think they come close to actual LED lights rated for growing.
