I have gotten DQ’d in breaststroke so many times I’ve lost count and just this summer finally got it legal it’s really slow but legal so at least I’ve made a bit of improvement!
I've just been certified as a stroke and turn judge for my kids league. Thank you for clarifying some things (like I couldn't understand why anyone would touch the bottom of the pool until I saw your video). I had two questions, if you don't mind. First, on the individual medley, can a swimmer do the backstroke flip turn to breast stroke, in which case, they won't finish on their back (they would approach the wall with their one arm pull while on their tummy right?)? Secondly, this comes up a lot in kids swimming anyway, what are the rules about fixing their goggles in the middle of an event?
I understand your motivation for this question - it does seem harsh! Fixing their goggles breaks the stroke cycle. So if they are doing breast stroke and stop to fix their goggles, they will likely do an extra kick out of cycle or their arms will break a rule with respect to recovery or some other rule about the stroke. If you look up the individual stroke rules, you can find out how the change in arm motion breaks the rules.
Hi, individual medley - they got to FINISH backstroke style before going breast. Flip turn after backstroke is a DQ. Had one DQ for this in Swedish National Mastership last year, and one who got away with it… for now 😂
Remember, for IM you are not judging turns, your judging finishes and starts. So from back to breast, you are judging a back finish, meaning there must be a touch before turning over. Leaving the wall, your now judging a breast start from the wall, meaning the swimmer must be facing down past the vertical.
Fantastic information as always, can you please do smaller clips for each stroke on Instagram to share with our swim team? Also - have you ever swam in a pool that has a false start pole at 15m? so 3 poles instead of the conventional 2 flags at each 5m end?
Things might be a bit different here in Germany, but afaik, you are allowed to stand on the bottom of the pool in freestyle (as long as you don't start walking or push off the bottom), and you can change your stroke during a freestyle event, as long as it's not on the same lap (i.e. if you want to swim the 200 free in IM order, you can, as long as you transition from one stroke to another with a proper turn). Also, as a quick addition: your hands may not be on top of each other when touching the wall in a fly or breast event. They have to be next to one another, for both turns and finishes.
Back in the 1980s I was DQ'd by a starter because I jumped into the pool at the start of a backstroke race before he said "Backstrokers in the water." In those days it was common for backstrokers to dive into the pool out to the backstroke flags and then swim backstroke back to the wall, kind of to get the arms loose before assuming your starting position. This starter, I noticed, had been reading out all of the information about the event before inviting the swimmers to jump in, and then he was rushing them to get into position. So once the previous heat's swimmers had cleared the pool and the starter began with the announcement "This is heat three of the boy's 13-14 100 backstroke. . . " I dove in and started to prepare myself. He then walked over to my lane and informed me that I was DQ'd because I had entered the pool without his permission. I don't know about these days, but back in the 1980s there was no rule in the rule book stating that a swimmer had to wait for the starter to invite them into the pool. The USS rulebook simply dictated that you could not get in the water until the previous heat had cleared the pool and the next heat was ready to begin. I protested, but to no avail. I always hated that starter.
Hmm, several things.... Not really having any coaching, I have never understood the requirements for the hand touch before the turns in the IM, and why flip turns without touching the wall with your hands for the fly and breast stroke are not allowed. Well, maybe just because that is the way it has always been done. I did see a swimmer from China who was DQd from a 200 fly event. He was doing a long glide rather than pulling as soon as his hands entered the water. He finished second. Eventually I will swim my over arm side stroke in a competition, which will most likely have to be with freestyle. The problem will be that I have not been able to find any rules for the side stroke since 'we only keep rules for competition strokes'. It was dropped from competition prior to the 1900 Olympics, supposedly because 'breast stroke was more gentlemanly because there was less splashing'. Only record in existence was set in 1895, 126 years ago, when a British swimmer swam 100 yards in 1:02.5. Freestyle record at that time was some thing like 1:01.2.
Yes, you can. The rule states you must be on your back or 90° on your side and touch the wall before doing your cross over, bucket, suicide or traditional turn to breast stroke.
I 100% know that this is for highschool but don't know if this is for USA swimming Breaststroke: You can't start your underwater pullout while in a downward 45 degree angle, you have to be in a flat 100 degree angle, to start it or you get disqualified Caps: You can't wear a cap with someone else team or name on it, or you get disqualified
Since you are a judge, please explain this DQ. One of my swimmers got DQ on the flip turn ( on the 50 yd freestyle part of the 200 IM). Judge said this flip turn MUST be pushed of of the wall on the stomach ( not on the back or side ( fly kicking) still underwater turn onto stomach before starting the free.
Hi Debra - this is sometimes called the "Lochte rule." 12-time NCAA Champion Ella Eastin got DQ'd for just this in the 400 IM: www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/ncaa-swimming-flashback-ella-eastin-rebounds-from-crushing-setback-to-annihilate-400-im-american-record/
@Bob Hansen So, why is it illegal to do dolphin kicks on your back in freestyle, and probably in the fly as well? I remember hearing that Lochte had a faster dolphin kick on his back, and that is why it was made illegal. Can't think of any way that dolphin kick on your back could be stronger than on your side or on your tummy since water pressure is equal. I did hear a discussion about it at Race Club, but it made no sense to me.
@@robohippy It's faster to do underwater dolphin kicks on your back than on your side or on your belly. Because Lochte figured that out, he started doing them during butterfly and freestyle events, turning towards his stomach before breaking out to do the strokes before the 15 meter rule. The rule sucks as I believe every swimmer would do it like Lochke. Just like the you're allowed one dolphin kick in your breast stroke transition.
@@paules0099 I am looking for some one to tell me why. In theory, it should not make any difference since water pressure is equal on all sides of your body. I did find out that with my flutter kick, with a one length of a 25 yard pool, it takes me some thing like 10 to 15 fewer kicks with back stroke flutter kick than it does with freestyle flutter kick. Gary Hall Sr. over at Race Club has his 'velocimeter' and I think he has measured it down to some thing like an arm length difference to break out, with flutter kick on your back compared to on your front. I have heard a number of different stories about why, but to date, not one has made sense.
@@robohippy Time yourself doing underwater dolphin kicks on back, side and stomach. I can't explain why, but you'll see the times for all three ways and find that underwater dolphin kicks is faster, just saying!
Non-symmetrical kick is a common disqualification for new breaststroke swimmers. It can be difficult to get it fixed without some form of manual manipulation of the swimmers legs by a coach with the swimmer doing the kick while gripping the wall, and the coach guiding the feet until the swimmer mentally maps the correct motion. Given the current litigious environment most coaches will not ever touch a swimmer - but this is how my breast stroke kick was fixed.
Near the beginning of our previous season (December), me and a friend were seeded 1 and 2 in the 200 IM. We start the race. After the first 25 meters, I did a fly>back turn off the first wall. I resurfaced (almost coming to a complete stop) and just continued doing butterfly, knowing I was getting disqualified. We finish the race, and I finished first. My friend finished second. Another guy from our team got third. We saw on Meet Mobile immediately that I had been DQed. A couple of minutes later, my friend had also been DQed. Our team had gotten false DQs on Meet Mobile before that had been resolved later. But no. He got disqualified for a non-simultaneous breaststroke kick. So my other friend who finished third won the race. Funny thing was we had been beefing all week over who was gonna win this race (friendly), then we both got DQed. The whole team knew about the beef so everyone thought it was funny.
I once DQed out of the podium for the 200 IM. The guy next to me didn't show up, so after I finished racing, I went into the empty lane to shake someone's hand without realizing someone was still swimming (in a different lane of course)
Breaststroke you can’t bring your hands below your waist? That happened when I was 7 in my first meet lol also accidentally wiggling on the blocks I think I was swimming 100 free so that was a weird event to get DQed on 😅
I get dqed in the breast stroke a lot, i swam the 100 breast 4 times this season and got dqed every time… it’s my kick, it’s a scissor kick and I’ve been trying to work on it but it’s really hard and frustrating to fix
If you're swimming freestyle and happen to miss touching the wall after a flip turn, you're allowed to turn around and touch the wall before continuing to swim. Simply touch the wall with your hand or feet and then resume swimming. However, if you don't touch the wall and keep swimming, you'll be disqualified.
In high school I got disqualified because I had a Nike logo on the back of my dragsuit that was bigger than 2 inches. Can't remember the exact rule on size requirements. I got 1st too. I was pissed
I got disqualified because I did a tumble turn and ended up in the wrong lane. 😅 I was like 12 doing my first 200 back. Apparently they made the rule that you have to finish in your own lane because of me. I was so embarrassed that I cried

Am 17 years old I started swimming lessons before 3 months ago but it’s hard for me didn’t get anything😞😞 I really give up . I never swim in my life ever. The students who learn with me all of them they now how to swim they are all older than me as well and the big problem is the teacher tension is always with them. I wish I could find someone to teach me well from basic.
Wow touching the bottom? Must be pretty shallow. In all the pools I’ve seen, they’re close to 8-13’. Might be a bit painful to try to touch the bottom.
Istg I’ve only been DQed for something OTHER than a false start like less than five times everything else was false starts bc I could never be still enough as a kid 😅
The tiny flinch on the starting block ugh. No forward movement, no time advantage, just move your toe or finger or flinch an elbow and you're done. My kids now get up on the blocks in position and just wait (like Summer McIntosh as one example). They used to wait for the "take your marks" but if you don't grab the block right or your foot slips then you get DQd.
🤣In and Out shakes all the away!! But really, I was wondering what happened to the male full-body suit they wore in Beijing. Then there was that thing about the Soul Cap and FINA...
I had a 25 second in a relay start which got disqualified, before that I had a 28 second. Edit: We had someone who never swam butterfly which was why we got a dq
So misconduct activities that can get you disqualified in swimming include..... 1. Dry humping (obvious no-no) 2. Crotch grabbing (obvious no-no) 3. Urinating in the pool or out of the pool (that's public urination - biggest no-no)--ditto for defecating as well--also disqualifiable--only do that stuff in the appropriate swim bathrooms!!! 4. Elbowing another swimmer in anger 5. Dunking another swimmer in anger 6. Forcibly throwing another racer into the pool 7. Assaulting or battering a swim official near the starting block 8. Verbal profanity or disorderly conduct at a swim official 9. Streaking (also an obvious no-no) - this is when you go into the swim area with no suit on 10. Flashing - also definitely disqualifiable (even without intent and only inadvertently)- this is when you allow your suit to drop exposing your genitalia, so make sure that your suit is TIGHT ENOUGH SO NO MATTER HOW YOU MOVE, OR SWIM, IT WILL STAY THERE and your genitalia will never be exposed throughout your swim meet.
And if you are a water polo player, you probably know that any very serious violation of the rules (leading to brutality foul calls), or committing 3 exclusion fouls during a water polo match - means a DQ as well.
I remember getting DQed for doing 2 breaststroke pulls underwater during my 100IM when i was 17. Me being Autistic, i freaked out cause i am such a perfectionist

@@FaresKsebati Which flags does a 50M sprinter need? BTW, I backstroked and gave up on goggles in races after a couple leak episodes, but then I had to touch the wall before I could flip and no butterfly kicks off the wall. (Yes, I am old). In a very intense race I upped my reps, leaked in one eye, touched the wall in the drain (cracked two fingernails) but hit the wall with my face (six stitches on the forehead). I did complete the last lap then had a long discussion about whether I should have been DQd since the judges thought I must have done something illegal. But my hand touched first, my head was deep into my flip when it made contact, my feet pushed off just below the drain with an enormous amount of compression power because I was so tight to the wall (that's why the judges questioned legality, I made up the time I had lost in a late turn with a huge push-off) . Sadly, the pool had to be emptied because of my bleeding.
back in my day, your head going below the water in breaststroke, automatic DQ. Also, this back to breast turn is designed to DQ swimmers, but not all of em. If you can turn onto your stomach on backstroke (events) turns (wish we had that back then), then why not on back to breast? STOP making it so complicated and punishing swimmers. Some ¨get caught"while others ¨get away with it¨. It´s just wrong.
I once got DQed for touching my goggles on the block. Idk if its an actual rule bc i swear ive seen people touch there goggles on the board and not got DQed. I think its stupid
In freestyle race, we can do any stroke , even mixed...10 mtr. Front crawl, 20 mt. Back stroke and 10 mtr. B. fly and finish with front crawl... I guess we can do that as FINA did not say you can't.. Fina rule is, to finish the race in same position , you start swimming.. But in free you caN do any thing mixed..Unless its a relay..

I have been dq on my first butterfly race
i have been DQ for doing to strokes of freestyle in backstroke :'(
I've gotten dq'd in backstroke, they said that I popped my head out to late in a 100 back in new jersey junior olympics
That turning on your stomach to do a "free" turn in backstroke was implemented in 1990.
Yeah, that was weird to get used to after doing the old style turn for years.
"15m Rule Resbumersion" now no longer applies for backstroke... you can now submerge for 5m before the finish....
Am 17 years old I started swimming lessons before 3 months ago but it’s hard for me didn’t get anything😞😞
I really give up . I never swim in my life ever. The students who learn with me all of them they now how to swim they are all older than me as well and the big problem is the teacher tension is always with them. I wish I could find someone to teach me well from basic.
@@samarnadra wawwwwwwww thank so much
Wow touching the bottom? Must be pretty shallow. In all the pools I’ve seen, they’re close to 8-13’. Might be a bit painful to try to touch the bottom.
Istg I’ve only been DQed for something OTHER than a false start like less than five times everything else was false starts bc I could never be still enough as a kid 😅
I learnt that in breaststroke rule. Elbow cannot above the water surface
I go DQ and was so sad
The tiny flinch on the starting block ugh. No forward movement, no time advantage, just move your toe or finger or flinch an elbow and you're done. My kids now get up on the blocks in position and just wait (like Summer McIntosh as one example). They used to wait for the "take your marks" but if you don't grab the block right or your foot slips then you get DQd.
Who else goes to DQ because the ice cream machine is broken at McDonald's? 🍦
No but I always joke to my friends that when we get DQ’ed we should go out for Dairy Queen afterwards
🤣In and Out shakes all the away!! But really, I was wondering what happened to the male full-body suit they wore in Beijing. Then there was that thing about the Soul Cap and FINA...
Ok plz tell me if im missing the joke or not bc i had no idea thats how the free works
Flat wall start - toes have to touch the pad
I had a 25 second in a relay start which got disqualified, before that I had a 28 second.
Edit: We had someone who never swam butterfly which was why we got a dq
So misconduct activities that can get you disqualified in swimming include.....
1. Dry humping (obvious no-no)
2. Crotch grabbing (obvious no-no)
3. Urinating in the pool or out of the pool (that's public urination - biggest no-no)--ditto for defecating as well--also disqualifiable--only do that stuff in the appropriate swim bathrooms!!!
4. Elbowing another swimmer in anger
5. Dunking another swimmer in anger
6. Forcibly throwing another racer into the pool
7. Assaulting or battering a swim official near the starting block
8. Verbal profanity or disorderly conduct at a swim official
9. Streaking (also an obvious no-no) - this is when you go into the swim area with no suit on
If you where another swim team swim suit and or swim cap with there name/ logo you can get DQ
I remember getting DQed for doing 2 breaststroke pulls underwater during my 100IM when i was 17. Me being Autistic, i freaked out cause i am such a perfectionist
Breaststroke does not have 15m rule that would be very interesting where athlete keeps themselves gliding as far as they can with only one Dolphin kick one arms stroke one breaststroke kick
I've been DQ today in 50 dolphin because of a early start
I am get dq I my high school meet in my 100 backstroke for jumping toooo for out really
Third leg touch 😏
A am a grate swimmer
DQ for not reporting to competitor steward on time, relay takeover plunge too early
I do not understand why 50M and backstroke swimmers wear goggles for races. Are they required?
Goggles are not required, but they prevent water from getting in your eyes and subsequently not being able to see the flags and finish correctly :)
I bring my son to Dairy Queen every time he gets disqualified. I might be unintentionally engaging in positive reinforcement...
The only good thing about being DQ'd is DQ! 😂
I am the fastes
I was disqualified in my first evere 50 breast strok because i forgot that you can only take 1 butterfly kick and i made around 15 of them
back in my day, your head going below the water in breaststroke, automatic DQ.
You missed how you get DQed for being fully submerged under the water in backstroke
I got disqualified once for literally swimming the wrong stroke😂💀
That's awesome, though! Hey, at least you were a free spirit!
I got DQ for breaststroke by touching the wall with one😂😂😂😂😂
You missed one.
You can’t touch the wall twice at the end of freestyle if you think you missed it the first time.
My DQ was not touching the wall on back. Then getting told I swam for nothing by the official.
that guy shoulda watched this video
I once got DQed for touching my goggles on the block. Idk if its an actual rule bc i swear ive seen people touch there goggles on the board and not got DQed. I think its stupid
being disqualified is the worst

In freestyle race, we can do any stroke , even mixed...10 mtr. Front crawl, 20 mt. Back stroke and 10 mtr. B. fly and finish with front crawl...
I guess we can do that as FINA did not say you can't..
Fina rule is, to finish the race in same position , you start swimming..
But in free you caN do any thing mixed..Unless its a relay..
Hence; it's a cloud - cluster of data. I'm sure - out of order - is an iszue.
My sister got disqualified for touching the bottom whereas I won lol
Two of my friends swam breaststroke in syncrony and got disqualified for that
I was diqualified on the 100 breast:(
breast stroke every time, Hope i dont do it tomarrow
