That's the 200 IM for me. The second I finish a race I swear that I'll never swim it again, but 20 minutes later I'm thinking about how I'll improve for the next meet.
Butterfly was my best stroke competing in swim meets back in the day. Now that I am older I lost the technique, thank you for the video, very helpful for me.
3.45 Water is 800 time denser than air, but water is not 800 times more resistant than air. Water resistance is not a constant. Resistance is a function of velocity as well as fluid density. The greater the speed the greater the resistance, which is why falling from a great height into water can be as deadly as falling onto concrete. In terms of swimming, the water resistance is also a function of how much of the body's surface is submerged in the water. For example the overall water resistance will be different at different moments in a stroke. The more of the body that is out of the water the less resistance, because there is less friction and drag. Even when fully submerged, the more aquadynamic a shape, the less resistance it experiences. For example a torpedo or a seal or an otter will experience less resistance moving through water than say an armchair or a bicycle or a tree.
i like entering the water with my forehead first, instead of my chin, not for the waving effect, but to rise the legs. it looks that your technique is different.
This is gonna help me a lot i just had junior olympics this weekend and added 5 seconds in 100 long course meter butterfly in finals after I was dropping in everything I can't wait to try this in the water especially since I'm gonna be moving up a age group in a little
I love butterfly!! And you're probably thinking, this guy is either crazy or lying!! But my personal opinion is butterfly should be the foundation of any swim training program. This could be wrong but for me if you can learn to enjoy butterfly and train it regularly, it seems to up your endurance and technique in all the other strokes.
Thanks for the video. I'm terrible at butterfly. I can swim intermediate level in the other strokes but butterfly just kills me. I'm gonna try and practice to get a little better; probably focusing on technique is the starting point.
I know you talk about the olympic way of swimming techniques but for me, who started to learn the butterfly 2 months ago, would be great to see a video about the Shaw butterfly which requires a different and more relaxed technique. To be honest I need some time to reach the physical level to do the olympic way of butterfly properly, but I can do the Shaw fly easily without exhausting myself. It seems to me that it has a more natural and relaxed pace so it is easier to do it for begineers and for longer distances. There was a swimmer in the far east who competed using the Shaw fly and he was really fast with it too (it is a different question that he submerged in one of his race completely so then he was disqualified due to this technique that let's you submerge and do one bigger wave)! Here is a video about his race where he was disqualified (otherwise he would have finished second): ua-cam.com/video/9H6zpBGVQL8S/v-deo.htmlo if someone want to "fly" fast, maybe this technique would be also a good alternative based on his performance. I would be also interested why this guy's Shaw fly (with a second small kick and one pull that might have some delay so it has definitely a different tempo) works as fast as the olympic way butterfly where you should do the lowest wave possible with a different pull and kick synchronisation.
it feels to me his stroke frequency is lower, but each stroke is very effective. He does more undulation but does that mean it's very different from the 'Olympic way' of butterfly? Don't understand why he's disqualified
He's a stud! He knows what works for him! Each swimmer is different based on their body type, flexibility, strength, conditioning and training background!
Haha I feel you! Fly is my worst stroke, but I had to do a 200 yard IM for a meet. Long story short, not fun, but I kinda want to do it again for some reason XD
@@rebeccawilliams8261 My thought exactly every time I swim that event. The end of a 200 IM is living hell, but somehow I'm weirdly addicted to swimming it.
When i do the kick underwater backwards, water always goes up my nose and it's hard to continue so I stop. Is there anything that I can do to stop / improve on this😅?
Just Me positive pressure is like when you blow your nose. Exhaling is positive pressure and inhaling creates a vacuum, or negative pressure. If you don’t maintain a stream of air bubbles out of your nose when you are inverted, water will go in. It doesn’t take much. Just a little constant pressure.
Not bad but I disagree with not diving up and down. You can't have undulation without it. Also it's nearly impossible to breath if you don't push your chest down. I challenge anyone to try butterfly on the surface and breath (without fins) The best swimmers can keep their arms leading due to shoulder flexibility but their body is still undulating. You nerd the bouyancy of the water to push you up to breath. Who cares about speed when you can't breathe properly.
Definitely agree that undulation is a huge part of butterfly! However, the fastest way from point A to point B is a line, so as one's butterfly develops, there needs to be a balance between pressing the chest down but also keeping the momentum moving forward and not necessarily up and down.
Yeh buf most people who want to learn fly just want to be able to do it. Not necessarily to enter and win any race's. I've tried both staying more flat and undulating deeper and the only way i can breath and get my arms over is allowing the water to push me up to breathe. Obviously not too deep/sharp an angle
Ahh Butterfly. The stroke that requires PASSION. I've been training it the past 2 months and it's really getting me into great physical shape. It's so challenging but I love it. Thanks for a great video

Thank you very much, you make my journey easier :-)
I just love love love doing fly it was my dream stroke when didn't know it I have learnt swimming it by myself and to master it, i come here You are the best coach i have met...
I really benefit a lot from your whiteboard lectures. They are so helpful, especially this one since I was never really instructed to do the butterfly. Before watching your video, when I tried it in the water, it was just awkward and I ended up kicking and splashing to the end of the pool. I needed to learn how to do it gracefully. This video helps a lot. I'll try it during my next training session in the pool. Thank you, Fares!
When you swim your either a breathstroker or a butterflyer, I usually was a breathstroker but my coach gave me the 100 meters fly so I need to get better at fly now. Your video helped me SO much. Thanks :D😅
This video was really helpful. I learned butterfly when I was swimming competitively, about 30 years ago. I recently started swimming again at the local pool, and someone made a comment on my technique. This video showed me how outdated my technique really is, and how I can improve. Thank you very much.
This channel has helped me so much in my swimming journey. I have started training for butterfly & here I am again, looking for tips!!! Thanks for all you do :)
I've always been scared to attempt the butterfly. I always end up turning it into a half-hearted breaststroke. But since building up strength with open water freestyle, when I get into the pool for the autumn/winter for sure I'm going to start training Fly! Great video.
This is a great video, but the "Angel Hands" you mention is an old school way of swimming butterfly. Ten years from now every flyer will use a vertical recovery in the butterfly (especially in the 50 and 100m events), aiming to take advantage of the gravity aspects of the recovery. So sorry, but no angel hands...
Hmm, the kicks are not the same size, and you actually show this in your animations, and as you swim. The difference is with the breathing kick. You can not engage your core totally since you are inhaling. The breathing kick has higher amplitude with the heels usually coming out of the water, again, look at your animations. As for the chest not moving up and down much, I was blown away by a video of Michael Phelps, there is an excellent one on You Tube about how he trained for it. His arms are extended in front a bit under the water, and his chest is maybe 18 inches under the surface. Yes, I know we are not all like Mike, but I do think there is some thing to be learned from that.
I swim freestyle a lot and fast, but never mastered butterfly. This helped a bit, I am close to getting it nailed. Only issue is breathing part, many times I breath in some water, especially if there are some waves, while swimming freestyle, waves do not bother me at all, even big ones. Any advice how to breath in not to get water in lungs :)
i think there is not much that can be done there, if ur for example not swimming in a pool where waves can happen. I know what u mean. With freely we are more flexible i guess with our movements hence breathing, where with butterfly u have to keep a constant movement.
@@anesethemi5054 somehow during freestyle, I quickly get air out and in, angle is different too.I think I am splashing water or something during butterfly, since my head is even higher, but I drink too much water. More practice I guess :)
@@jutjub22 yeah more practice. I used to get water on my mouth during freestyle, but as I got more acquited to it, I dont anymore. Probably the same goes for butterfly
