  • Tune in for a demonstration of how we grade and price vinyl LPs. We will take questions as we research, clean, grade and determine the retail price of some classic pre-owned albums.
✶ Talking About Records is presented by NTX Vinyl, a local, independent, chain of community based record stores in the DFW area.

I’ve bought new and used from GI at NTX Vinyl. The used vinyl was in EXCELLENT shape and played superb. In dealing with GI, he’s a great person. Very knowledgeable and accommodating.

Very informative for someone who got into vinyl just recently! I dont plan on doing much selling but as a buyer this helps me. The closest record store to me is two hours away so I'll be prepared when I go next time.I plan on using Discogs as a reference when I go there next.
Funny that your last record was Fly By Night. I have a bunch of old Rush records and they were hard to nail down on Discogs. I have Fly By Night and there are a ton of variations, some with blue or purple covers for example!

I just started hobby selling on the bay and its so time consuming, especially taking photos. I learned a few tricks from you, and I'm becoming more confident about grading and pricing. Watching a pro do it has really helped me. Thank you!

Why do you visually grade rather than play grade? I imagine it’s due to time constraints with the amount of vinyl you move, but I’d be nervous to visually grade as a record could appear to be free of defects, but the grooves can have been murdered from a bad/cheap stylus. Love your videos. Thanks for your contribution to the hobby.

You’re very welcome, and your assumption is correct. Not even remotely possible to spin every record, as we price hundreds every week. If it’s higher end ($50+) and I’m questionable about the grade I will absolutely play test a portion of it - but on normal $5-$50 LPs a visual grade is the norm.

As a younger millennial, my music collecting really started with buying CDs and then ripping them to my computer to put on an iPod. Since iPods also list artists by first name, that’s what I became accustomed to, so that’s how my record collection is organized!
I’m curious, GI: how do you sort Alice Cooper? Under A for the band name, or C for the solo artist’s last name?

I noticed on some records you wipe down you’re not putting them on the sleeve but rather on the furniture? Doesn’t that scratch them? Just an observation I made while watching the video.

Naw it’s a very clean and smooth surface - otherwise I wouldn’t use it

I’m curious what POS and Inventory Management software do you use? You’re grading your new LPs and creating a barcode for them but I haven’t heard you talk about how your stores manage multi-location and online inventory. I’m interested in that element of record store operations.
Enjoy your videos and will stop into an NTX location when I’m in Denton area several times in early summer.

hey there! I honestly don't do a lot of inventory tracking. I focus on moving inventory fast. I'd rather spend my time selling than tracking stock. If it sits long enough for me to "inventory" it than I'm losing money.

Hey GI. Any reason you put your inners in with the opening aligned with outer cover opening?

Very surprised you put it right on the desk with no sleeve or anything underneath.

What was the cleaning solution you used?

Also, what are your thoughts on gluing covers back together?

      Cleaning solution is called Kaiu
I have no problems repairing covers to restore them. I even do it to one on the fly in this video, with glue. Another with tape

Very informative as always. Personally, the matrix numbers/pressing variations on almost all the more popular groups (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Stones, etc). is the main reason I do not list them on eBay or Discogs. I understand that certain collectors look for different pressings of albums, but it is way too time consuming to breakout the magnifying glass and look each up individually. A Robert Ludwig pressing notwithstanding, I can sell the same Led Zeppelin album in my brick and mortar store by just pricing it up based solely on condition. Grading and selling the groups or artists with limited album pressings on eBay or Discogs is less time consuming and much easier on the eyes.
