The first rule in Serbia is: take it easy Serbia is much more than what you scratched the surface of... 970 written history many world-famous scientists, writers, composers... military leader and brave people... in serbia you should take your time and see the north as well as the south.. Serbia has beautiful nature... and finally, ask yourself why many people who come as tourists stay here to live with us😉
Well, unknowingly, we learned the first rule without having it taught to us! It was very comfortable for us to spend time in Belgrade, and I'm sure it's like that everywhere, even more perhaps in the small towns and villages. So glad you liked it here. Hope you will find it worth to come back sometimes. Be sure to check more museums, Avala mountain, some local spots like Ada lake, Košutnjak park etc. maybe make some daily trips around Serbia, you can take a speed train to Novi Sad if nothing, takes only half hour to get there. Little add on, kajmak is a milk cream, basically milk fat. No fermentation so it is not a cheese. Ajvar is being made in varieties, mild, spicy, hot… but in any case basic ingredient is paprika and eggplant. Greetings from Belgrade.
Hi Marko, We do plan to return. There is so much we weren't able to see and do, and we'd love to explore north and south beyond Belgrade. Novi Sad is definitely on our list of places to visit when we return. I read through Wikipedia and a few other sites that kajmak is a type of cheese, so that's why I referred to it that way. I can see now that's incorrect. It did taste like clotted cream, but at the time I couldn't put my fingers on that flavor-being in front of the camera is often unnerving! Again, wikipedia lists Ajvar as having different variations (with and without eggplant and also spicy or not). It seemed that the version we ate did not have eggplant. I didn't see any seeds or taste anything that even remotely tasted like eggplant. Perhaps I don't know enough about it and don't have a nuanced enough palate to have detected the eggplant, but thanks for mentioning it. It was especially clean in the Stari Grad area. There were other areas that weren't bad, but not quite like this area. There are a lot of large dumpsters where people can drop off their trash and plenty of receptacles to dispose of additional trash. We also saw people cleaning up on the streets, which is great. Not everyone on the side streets picked up after their pets, but that's a problem even in the US.

Ajvar is vegetable spread made of red pepper (only) or red pepper and egg plant. Could be mild (not spicy) or hot ( spicy), you can buy in USA in any Mediterranean or arabic store. Comes in glass jars. There are plenty of videos of how to make Serbian food with English subtitles , so you can see ahead what goes in the certain dish. But, always rely on waitresses opinions, because they know best. Waiting for your next visit and new video 🙏.
Yes! This one was only red peppers. it was flavorful, but I might have enjoyed a little dash of cayenne or heat added in. It was refreshing though, especially alongside some of the heavier foods we've eaten in Serbia. Thanks so much for watching and for this explanation. I was a little ahead of my time because it wasn't common to audition from home and I had to drive three hours to my agent's office to audition. It's funny how it has this "unsafe" "criminal" reputation but my time there has been one of the safest in a long time, we were two girls walking the streets of Belgrade at 10pm during summer of last year and there were so many people out, dining, eating ice cream and walking.... One of the best places I've been to for sure and I plan on going back next year.

We feel you, Merrill! Apparently in Belgrade they have been revamping their transportation network and it led to some inaccurate/vague information that made it extra hard. But it should only be temporary and only created a few problems. The Moovit app was a huge help. And it is a really great to hear that you would consider Belgrade for slow travel. We think it would be a great city to hang for a few months. You get 90 days without having to apply for a visa if you have a US passport. -Judy
Hi Rebecca, I love that analogy, and it actually is pretty accurate (wish I thought of it and referenced it that way in the video!). I had to have been in the salon for probably 5 hours to fix something that happened in a salon in Krakow. Two college students who were dating spent the bulk of that time just hanging out-well after his appointment. I've never seen such a thing. They left probably 30 minutes before I finished, and I had to go to an ATM to pay for everything since the salon didn't accept cards or I would have taken pictures. It was such a lovely and unexpected experience! -Judy

04:98 actually, we have about 25 or 30 new, modern CAF trams, Spanish trams. And many old, I think Czechoslovak trams?. And some Swiss, also old trams. I like the Swiss trams the most, because they are very quiet and very comfortable to ride.
How interesting! We weren’t aware of this. That’s awesome. We always love visiting a place with good public transportation, and Belgrade was awesome for this. I was thrilled to be able to go to and from the hospital without having to walk or get a taxi. -Judy

For couple days will be 50 000 people in that temple and 100 000 rats on one place. If there were a posibility of rebrending the countries and nations, Serbia and Serbs should definitlly be the first pick for that process... Simply, when you hear word Serbia you either confuse it with Siberia or Siria (not so catchy and safe places) or you have some reminescence of Yugoslavia wars in 90's and Serbs in Hollywood flicks bad guys roles.. Modern Serbia have nothing to do with cold Asia or ruined Meadle East, wars are also lone gone, country and nation are prospering in every poalsible way, yet Serbia is not some EU clonish country, there still some blend of uniqueness and moderness... Place to visiti 10/10...
We agree that Serbia can be confused with Syria (and I guess even Siberia!). Eastern Europe hasn't always been an easy place for people to visit on vacation, but we are glad that's changing. Geographically this part of Europe is called Southern Europe, but if you have in mind political regional names, perhaps you could go with it, though ex Yugoslavia (Serbia was part of it) was never included in Eastern Bloc, or Communist Bloc, it was Non-Aligned.

"Pork cracklings" as you call them are my favorites. They are the real deal, not the cardboard tasting stuff they sell in bags at your grocery store. You get a bit of skin, meat, and fat...all salty and crunchy...and very addictive. Tastes kind of like bacon bits. My mom & pop butcher store sells it by weight. "Ajvar" is a relish made with roasted red peppers and eggplant. It does come in different "strengths" ranging from mild to extra hot. It goes well with any meat, even fish. "Kajmak", the soft spreadable cheese is also great addition to meats or vegetables. I wish I could buy it where I live.
I really enjoy watching your videos and the places you have been. I would like your opinion. We are thinking about slow travel thru Europe but spending 2-3 months in cities, to feel more like home. We live in Spain now and want to see more of euro🤓

Occasionally we’ll take a side trip for a day or two like we did in Romania but keep our Airbnb if it is cheap enough. We have so many places on our bucket list that we haven’t had too many places where we’ve stayed more than a month. There have been a few occasions where we would have liked to stay an extra week or two, but we sometimes are ready to move on in a month. I love the idea of spending longer in a place and getting even more fully assimilated. At some point we’ll want to slow down more and stay longer, but we aren’t there yet. if I didn’t answer your question properly, let me know also, feel free to ask anything else! I just randomly ran into this video and started watching it just so see how outsiders saw my Belgrade. After a couple of minutes, I realized that the guy in the video looks sooo familiar for some reason. Like "I know I saw this guy somewhere, I just know I know this guy", you know the feeling? You may be right about the specific ajvar we ate, but I didn't detect any seeds or eggplant to indicate that they were included. According to wikipedia, which can be wrong a good bit of the time, it can be made with just peppers or peppers and eggplant. 🤷♀️ We do love castles and fortresses, in part because they represent so much of history. But when we return, we plan to visit both northern and southern parts of Serbia. There's a lot to see and we don't pretend that we know enough about Serbia just because we spent time in one city. Absolutely, we were there from Aug 25-Sept. 25, 2023. We absolutely would love to return and explore more. In fact, we'll be visiting nearby Albania this fall at nearly the exact time of year! If you go, we'd love to know what you think! -Judy
Kajmak is made just from milk fat. First, they cook milk, then when cold fat goes up and they grab just that layer of fat and put in separate bowl and add salt. Next time, milk cooking next layer of fat is added. The rest of the milk is used for cheese. It is a long time process and cheese that left isn't high fat, high quality one soo kajmak than have higher price. Someone like when kajmak is old (stronger flavor, harder consistency), but most Serbians like "younger one." We usually spread it to bred like saltier butter. In West Serbia, you can try "komplet lepinja" and "cevapcici na kajmaku." Ajvar, you can choose spicy or not. Simply-roasted paprika, onions, egg plant, mayby tomato :/ In the city center near universities is Museum of Pedagogy. It is really cute and tickets are cheap 😊

Hi Ernie, We typically use Viator, TripAdvisor, or Tourswithlocals, Airbnb experiences when we travel (or the vendors that list on these sites). Especially when it comes to learning the history of a place, we want someone who is trained in history or architecture and who can teach us, not just show us around. We think it's worth it to hire a professional tour guide so that we can learn something and have a rich experience, especially since we are passing on what we learned with others through our UA-cam channel. (spelling?)......probably the prettiest street in all of Serbia 🙂 AirBnb and TripAdvisors are quite good too from my experience. I admit, haven't used Tourswithlocals. These days i go straight to Nis as that is where my Mrs is, so get off the plane and head straight for the bus stn and off to Nis. @@FindingGinaMarie Skadarlija Street, Judy, is very Bohemiam style. If you've seen the movie Hans Christian Andersan with Danny Kaye, when he is in Copehnagen and the flowers above the shops etc, that is what Skadarlija is like. It has/had (i believe they have "fixed" it up since i was there in 2015, the original stones from the Ottoman days. Nis has a different feel. It is a mix between Belgrade and Novi Sad. Belgrade forgot what paint is. Novi Sad knows a lot about paint. Nis is a 50-50 lol. Nis is the 3rd largest city which is small compared to our western standards with re 300 000 ppl including surrounds. It is much slower and ppl seem more relaxed there compared to Belgrade. For such a small city, Nis has a lot on offer re things to see and has a vast history. If memory serves me correctly, Churchill said, the Balkans has enough history that not even they can remember it all lol. This is one thing I love about Europe. In Oz, nothing bar Aboriginal things is more than 200 years old since it is such a young country. One thing i recently (in the last few months) found out via one and only one YT video is that Nis is known as the City of Fairies, after the Celts went thru it. Not even my Mrs told me that hehehe When you come to visit again, yes, pls if you can, ensure you get to visit Skadarlija, Novi Sad and Nis, and there is still so much more to see. One could easily spend a few months and still not see all the nice things to see. 🙂
I did find some pictures of Skadarlija Street, and it looks beautiful. You "paint" a wonderful picture of both Novi Sad and Nis, and we are more enticed than ever to visit both the next time we visit Serbia (and more of Belgrade). Eastern European countries in general don't get enough attention or promotion, especially to people from the US. We aren't saying at all that Serbia isn't amazing, but there aren't big tourism campaigns by Serbia to promote visiting the country. And since for many years a lot of Americans didn't visit due to politics or war or various other reasons, there's a lot we don't know. We are glad to have visited and are hoping we can encourage more people to visit and learn about the beauty of Serbia. -Judy

As a Serbian, I can tell you, if you approach young people on the street, everyone speaks English good enough to help you out. Don’t be surprised if some people actually go with you to your destination, and expect nothing in return.
Hi Julio, Great question; thanks for asking it! There were a few people who could not, but the majority of people spoke at least a little bit. My hairdresser spoke English very well and so did all the doctors and waiters we dealt with. It is a very easy place for someone who speaks English. -Judy
We study English and French in school from early age of 7 until 14 years old,and its mandatory. After that we can choose another language or continue learning English or French

It's the first time in my whole life I've seen someone having chvartsy and kaymac at the same time! Much too greasy. Ayvar could be mild and hot and of different quality. It takes time and experience to find your own taste and way with it.
We can appreciate that our choice of foods was eclectic, but Kevin's surgery in Serbia definitely put a crimp on our time for food exploration and seeing the city. one should definitely visit The Museum of Yugoslavia. It chronicles the period of Kingdom of Yugoslavia and Socialist Yugoslavia as well as the life of Josip Broz Tito. Tito's grave is located in one of the museum buildings (the House of Flowers)

I am SO glad you had a great experience at the hospital in Belgrade. The "word on the street" is that their medical education has really soared, and . . . Sadly, the EU attracts many of the best doctors. Thus, they have a brain drain. Some of my relatives know a Harvard Medical School professor originally from Belgrade. Another one of their friends does clinical advanced training in neurology in Paris.

Serbia is not well marketed as a tourist destination, so we really didn't know what to expect. But it was beautiful, the people were friendly, the food was delicious, and it was a very comfortable place to live for a month. So yes, we were surprised. Not everyplace in the world is like this. -Judy

Kajmak is not a cheese. And it is pronounced as kaymak. Also ajvar is pronounced in as ayvar. Americans don't have an excuse with mispronunciation, as everything is available on line these days. Don't stay ignorant! All the best.
I think we made it clear in our video that we rushed to try a bunch of foods that we didn't know much about. Part of the time in Serbia was spent with Kevin having surgery. We admit that we didn't have a ton of time and tried our best to still try some of the foods that are important in Serbia. When we looked up kajmak, here's the definition we got: "Kajmak is a Serbian/Croatian fresh, unripened or "new" cheese made from unpasteurized, unhomogenized milk. It is fluffy and light in texture-you might compare it to whipped cream cheese in that regard, but it doesn't taste like cream cheese. It tastes like a slightly stronger cheese, but it's also sweet at the same time. Some compare it to clotted cream." So perhaps you'll forgive our "ignorance" by trusting the internet. Also, if you've ever looked at pronunciations on the internet, there sometimes are multiple pronunciations and it's hard to know which is right. Our intention is not to ruin the places we visit. We have always tried to be respectful of the people and cultures everywhere we go and learn as much as we can so that we can become more tolerant, empathetic, and knowledgeable humans. It's not about Americans versus Serbians. Yes, we are bringing attention to some places that aren't overtouristed, but it's with an eye of sharing the beauty of a place with the world who might never have a chance to travel here themselves or demystify it for someone so they can consider traveling there. And Serbia, like most other countries, depends on some tourism. -Judy
Serbia doesn't get a ton of press as being a must-see tourist city, and that's unfortunate. We had no idea what to expect because it's not talked about enough. We tried to demystify some of it and show off some things we enjoyed so that others might want to add it to their list of places in the world to visit. Not sure if you actually watched the video, but we were impressed by how kind everyone was and that the food was excellent and it's overall a beautiful country (in case people didn't already know). How many people live in Budapest? Belgrade is growing fast also. I live in Stockholm 2 milion live there, you seem not to like Belgrade since you write such a "gifted" comment. The first rule in Serbia is: take it easy Serbia is much more than what you scratched the surface of... 970 written history many world-famous scientists, writers, composers... military leader and brave people... in serbia you should take your time and see the north as well as the south.. Serbia has beautiful nature... and finally, ask yourself why many people who come as tourists stay here to live with us😉
Well, unknowingly, we learned the first rule without having it taught to us! It was very comfortable for us to spend time in Belgrade, and I'm sure it's like that everywhere, even more perhaps in the small towns and villages. Be sure to check more museums, Avala mountain, some local spots like Ada lake, Košutnjak park etc. maybe make some daily trips around Serbia, you can take a speed train to Novi Sad if nothing, takes only half hour to get there.
Little add on, kajmak is a milk cream, basically milk fat. No fermentation so it is not a cheese. Ajvar is being made in varieties, mild, spicy, hot… but in any case basic ingredient is paprika and eggplant.

Hi Marko, We do plan to return. There is so much we weren't able to see and do, and we'd love to explore north and south beyond Belgrade. Novi Sad is definitely on our list of places to visit when we return. I read through Wikipedia and a few other sites that kajmak is a type of cheese, so that's why I referred to it that way. I can see now that's incorrect. It did taste like clotted cream, but at the time I couldn't put my fingers on that flavor-being in front of the camera is often unnerving! Again, wikipedia lists Ajvar as having different variations (with and without eggplant and also spicy or not). It seemed that the version we ate did not have eggplant. I didn't see any seeds or taste anything that even remotely tasted like eggplant. Perhaps I don't know enough about it and don't have a nuanced enough palate to have detected the eggplant, but thanks for mentioning it. Wow the city is so clean than in New York
It was especially clean in the Stari Grad area. There were other areas that weren't bad, but not quite like this area. There are a lot of large dumpsters where people can drop off their trash and plenty of receptacles to dispose of additional trash. We also saw people cleaning up on the streets, which is great. Not everyone on the side streets picked up after their pets, but that's a problem even in the US.

Ajvar is vegetable spread made of red pepper (only) or red pepper and egg plant. Could be mild (not spicy) or hot ( spicy), you can buy in USA in any Mediterranean or arabic store. Comes in glass jars. There are plenty of videos of how to make Serbian food with English subtitles , so you can see ahead what goes in the certain dish. But, always rely on waitresses opinions, because they know best. Waiting for your next visit and new video 🙏.
Yes! This one was only red peppers. it was flavorful, but I might have enjoyed a little dash of cayenne or heat added in. It was refreshing though, especially alongside some of the heavier foods we've eaten in Serbia. Thanks so much for watching and for this explanation. I was a little ahead of my time because it wasn't common to audition from home and I had to drive three hours to my agent's office to audition. Things are so much easier these days where you can submit auditions from home! But it has been in the back of my mind that if we need to earn some income, revisiting that career could be an option (although I'm having too much fun doing this full time instead!).

It's funny how it has this "unsafe" "criminal" reputation but my time there has been one of the safest in a long time, we were two girls walking the streets of Belgrade at 10pm during summer of last year and there were so many people out, dining, eating ice cream and walking.... One of the best places I've been to for sure and I plan on going back next year.

We feel you, Merrill! Apparently in Belgrade they have been revamping their transportation network and it led to some inaccurate/vague information that made it extra hard. But it should only be temporary and only created a few problems. The Moovit app was a huge help. And it is a really great to hear that you would consider Belgrade for slow travel. We think it would be a great city to hang for a few months. You get 90 days without having to apply for a visa if you have a US passport. -Judy

Hi Rebecca, I love that analogy, and it actually is pretty accurate (wish I thought of it and referenced it that way in the video!). I had to have been in the salon for probably 5 hours to fix something that happened in a salon in Krakow. Two college students who were dating spent the bulk of that time just hanging out-well after his appointment. I've never seen such a thing. They left probably 30 minutes before I finished, and I had to go to an ATM to pay for everything since the salon didn't accept cards or I would have taken pictures. It was such a lovely and unexpected experience! -Judy

04:98 actually, we have about 25 or 30 new, modern CAF trams, Spanish trams. And many old, I think Czechoslovak trams?. And some Swiss, also old trams. I like the Swiss trams the most, because they are very quiet and very comfortable to ride.
swiss trams are green, rest are red, spanish and czehoslovakian.
How interesting! We weren’t aware of this. That’s awesome. We always love visiting a place with good public transportation, and Belgrade was awesome for this. I was thrilled to be able to go to and from the hospital without having to walk or get a taxi. -Judy

For couple days will be 50 000 people in that temple and 100 000 rats on one place. If you plan to visit India my recomndation is to visit that temple, Golden Temple also , Jodpur and indian holiest city on Gang river, i can not remmember the name. Sorry, it is completely out of our topic.
Since we don't drive in foreign countries, we appreciate anyplace that has any sort of public transportation. Some is far better than none! Wait-worshipping rats? I think that is a hard pass! Simply, when you hear word Serbia you either confuse it with Siberia or Siria (not so catchy and safe places) or you have some reminescence of Yugoslavia wars in 90's and Serbs in Hollywood flicks bad guys roles..
Modern Serbia have nothing to do with cold Asia or ruined Meadle East, wars are also lone gone, country and nation are prospering in every poalsible way, yet Serbia is not some EU clonish country, there still some blend of uniqueness and moderness...

We agree that Serbia can be confused with Syria (and I guess even Siberia!). Eastern Europe hasn't always been an easy place for people to visit on vacation, but we are glad that's changing. "Pork cracklings" as you call them are my favorites. They are the real deal, not the cardboard tasting stuff they sell in bags at your grocery store. You get a bit of skin, meat, and fat...all salty and crunchy...and very addictive. Tastes kind of like bacon bits. My mom & pop butcher store sells it by weight. "Ajvar" is a relish made with roasted red peppers and eggplant. It does come in different "strengths" ranging from mild to extra hot. It goes well with any meat, even fish. "Kajmak", the soft spreadable cheese is also great addition to meats or vegetables. I wish I could buy it where I live.
You have made my mouth water. I know it was a very unconventional way to try these foods, but we were glad to have done it before we left. -Judy

Occasionally we’ll take a side trip for a day or two like we did in Romania but keep our Airbnb if it is cheap enough. We have so many places on our bucket list that we haven’t had too many places where we’ve stayed more than a month. There have been a few occasions where we would have liked to stay an extra week or two, but we sometimes are ready to move on in a month. I love the idea of spending longer in a place and getting even more fully assimilated. At some point we’ll want to slow down more and stay longer, but we aren’t there yet. if I didn’t answer your question properly, let me know also, feel free to ask anything else! I just randomly ran into this video and started watching it just so see how outsiders saw my Belgrade. After a couple of minutes, I realized that the guy in the video looks sooo familiar for some reason. Like "I know I saw this guy somewhere, I just know I know this guy", you know the feeling? However, I just couldn't figure out why the hell a random guy in a random video on YT looks and sounds so familiar. You may be right about the specific ajvar we ate, but I didn't detect any seeds or eggplant to indicate that they were included. According to wikipedia, which can be wrong a good bit of the time, it can be made with just peppers or peppers and eggplant. 🤷♀️ We do love castles and fortresses, in part because they represent so much of history. But when we return, we plan to visit both northern and southern parts of Serbia. There's a lot to see and we don't pretend that we know enough about Serbia just because we spent time in one city. Absolutely, we were there from Aug 25-Sept. 25, 2023. We absolutely would love to return and explore more. In fact, we'll be visiting nearby Albania this fall at nearly the exact time of year! If you go, we'd love to know what you think! -Judy
Kajmak is made just from milk fat. First, they cook milk, then when cold fat goes up and they grab just that layer of fat and put in separate bowl and add salt. Next time, milk cooking next layer of fat is added. The rest of the milk is used for cheese. It is a long time process and cheese that left isn't high fat, high quality one soo kajmak than have higher price. Someone like when kajmak is old (stronger flavor, harder consistency), but most Serbians like "younger one." We usually spread it to bred like saltier butter. In West Serbia, you can try "komplet lepinja" and "cevapcici na kajmaku."
Ajvar, you can choose spicy or not. Simply-roasted paprika, onions, egg plant, mayby tomato :/

We thought it was pretty central to the city. You had to walk a little bit to get around, but it was easy to get to all parts of the city, which was terrific for us. For a month in September, we paid $1,162.81. We would recommend it! -Judy

You paid for a walking tour? I am sure when i did it in 2015, it was free unless it's a different tour or they started charging. The one i went on lasted for about 4 hrs from memory 🙂
Hi Ernie, We typically use Viator, TripAdvisor, or Tourswithlocals, Airbnb experiences when we travel (or the vendors that list on these sites). Especially when it comes to learning the history of a place, we want someone who is trained in history or architecture and who can teach us, not just show us around. We think it's worth it to hire a professional tour guide so that we can learn something and have a rich experience, especially since we are passing on what we learned with others through our UA-cam channel. (spelling?)......probably the prettiest street in all of Serbia 🙂 AirBnb and TripAdvisors are quite good too from my experience. I admit, haven't used Tourswithlocals.
These days i go straight to Nis as that is where my Mrs is, so get off the plane and head straight for the bus stn and off to Nis.
Once i move to Nis and settle, there is a lot of travelling to be had lol..... a lot of weekends away etc 🙂

I'm not sure how we missed it, but I don't think we saw Skadarlija Street. I've got it on our list to visit when we return. Thanks for the suggestion about Nis, we will have to add it to our agenda as well. Belgrade definitely had its own vibe, but that's the benefit of travel. @@FindingGinaMarie Skadarlija Street, Judy, is very Bohemiam style. If you've seen the movie Hans Christian Andersan with Danny Kaye, when he is in Copehnagen and the flowers above the shops etc, that is what Skadarlija is like. It has/had (i believe they have "fixed" it up since i was there in 2015, the original stones from the Ottoman days.
Nis has a different feel. It is a mix between Belgrade and Novi Sad. Belgrade forgot what paint is. Novi Sad knows a lot about paint. Nis is a 50-50 lol. Nis is the 3rd largest city which is small compared to our western standards with re 300 000 ppl including surrounds. It is much slower and ppl seem more relaxed there compared to Belgrade. For such a small city, Nis has a lot on offer re things to see and has a vast history.
If memory serves me correctly, Churchill said, the Balkans has enough history that not even they can remember it all lol. This is one thing I love about Europe. In Oz, nothing bar Aboriginal things is more than 200 years old since it is such a young country.
One thing i recently (in the last few months) found out via one and only one YT video is that Nis is known as the City of Fairies, after the Celts went thru it. Not even my Mrs told me that hehehe
When you come to visit again, yes, pls if you can, ensure you get to visit Skadarlija, Novi Sad and Nis, and there is still so much more to see. One could easily spend a few months and still not see all the nice things to see. 🙂
I did find some pictures of Skadarlija Street, and it looks beautiful. You "paint" a wonderful picture of both Novi Sad and Nis, and we are more enticed than ever to visit both the next time we visit Serbia (and more of Belgrade). Eastern European countries in general don't get enough attention or promotion, especially to people from the US. We aren't saying at all that Serbia isn't amazing, but there aren't big tourism campaigns by Serbia to promote visiting the country. And since for many years a lot of Americans didn't visit due to politics or war or various other reasons, there's a lot we don't know. We are glad to have visited and are hoping we can encourage more people to visit and learn about the beauty of Serbia. -Judy

As a Serbian, I can tell you, if you approach young people on the street, everyone speaks English good enough to help you out. Don’t be surprised if some people actually go with you to your destination, and expect nothing in return.
Hi Julio, Great question; thanks for asking it! There were a few people who could not, but the majority of people spoke at least a little bit. My hairdresser spoke English very well and so did all the doctors and waiters we dealt with. It is a very easy place for someone who speaks English. -Judy

Hi Franz, you are right. Some people have three jobs and not a one of them offers healthcare benefits, and the pay at each isn't sufficient to buy health insurance out of pocket without an employer partially funding the cost. It's a terrible thing. -Judy

one should definitely visit The Museum of Yugoslavia. It chronicles the period of Kingdom of Yugoslavia and Socialist Yugoslavia as well as the life of Josip Broz Tito. Tito's grave is located in one of the museum buildings (the House of Flowers)

I am SO glad you had a great experience at the hospital in Belgrade. The "word on the street" is that their medical education has really soared, and . . . Sadly, the EU attracts many of the best doctors. Thus, they have a brain drain. Some of my relatives know a Harvard Medical School professor originally from Belgrade. Another one of their friends does clinical advanced training in neurology in Paris.

Serbia is not well marketed as a tourist destination, so we really didn't know what to expect. But it was beautiful, the people were friendly, the food was delicious, and it was a very comfortable place to live for a month. So yes, we were surprised. Not everyplace in the world is like this. -Judy

Kajmak is not a cheese. And it is pronounced as kaymak. Also ajvar is pronounced in as ayvar. Americans don't have an excuse with mispronunciation, as everything is available on line these days. Don't stay ignorant! All the best.
I think we made it clear in our video that we rushed to try a bunch of foods that we didn't know much about. Part of the time in Serbia was spent with Kevin having surgery. We admit that we didn't have a ton of time and tried our best to still try some of the foods that are important in Serbia. When we looked up kajmak, here's the definition we got: "Kajmak is a Serbian/Croatian fresh, unripened or "new" cheese made from unpasteurized, unhomogenized milk. It is fluffy and light in texture-you might compare it to whipped cream cheese in that regard, but it doesn't taste like cream cheese. It tastes like a slightly stronger cheese, but it's also sweet at the same time. Some compare it to clotted cream." So perhaps you'll forgive our "ignorance" by trusting the internet. Also, if you've ever looked at pronunciations on the internet, there sometimes are multiple pronunciations and it's hard to know which is right. We think it's more important to have brought Serbia to more people and shared with them the things about the country that are worth seeing and tasting and trust that most of the people watching will be kind and understanding. -Judy

Our intention is not to ruin the places we visit. We have always tried to be respectful of the people and cultures everywhere we go and learn as much as we can so that we can become more tolerant, empathetic, and knowledgeable humans. It's not about Americans versus Serbians. Yes, we are bringing attention to some places that aren't overtouristed, but it's with an eye of sharing the beauty of a place with the world who might never have a chance to travel here themselves or demystify it for someone so they can consider traveling there. Serbia doesn't get a ton of press as being a must-see tourist city, and that's unfortunate. We had no idea what to expect because it's not talked about enough. We tried to demystify some of it and show off some things we enjoyed so that others might want to add it to their list of places in the world to visit. Not sure if you actually watched the video, but we were impressed by how kind everyone was and that the food was excellent and it's overall a beautiful country (in case people didn't already know). Also, Kevin got great medical care while we were there, and we wanted to spotlight it. -Judy

Overrated city.
We enjoyed our time in Belgrade. We loved the waterway, the restaurants, the beautiful buildings, the kind people, and the Nicola Tesla museum. We would have loved to explore more, but our experience was great. Had Kevin not been laid up from surgery, we would have explored even more. -Judy

Even though there clearly are touristy areas, it was never jam packed the way some big Western European cities can be where you have to queue in long lines and deal with big crowds.
