This was an amazing film. A must watch. Its really sad to know about the rich history that isn't told to us in schools. I never even knew blacks were in world war II and had such a great fighting record. I appreciate the people that put movies like this together and teach us a true history lesson. There should be more of these films put together. Just do a wiki search on red tails. This movie is truly based on true events.
It's not without its flaws. But I think the film's heart is in the right place. For example the shot of a Mustang strafing a destroyer and it has this big explosion. I think that's more than likely hollywood bull****. I feel the film got bogged down with too many subplots but still, it's a story that deserves to be told. Also if you didn't know about the Red Tails? Look up the Black Panthers. They were an all black Tank Destroyer battallion in WWII. If you really want to dig deeper? Check out the Harlem Hellfighters from WW1 as well as the 54th Massachusetts Infantry regiment in WWII. You also had the 1st Kansas all colored volunteer infantry regiment during the Civil War.
We learn something new about us everyday it's sad they never inform us how we also had heros back in the day like this the risk there lives for people that hate us
It's the genius of George Lucas. Sadly, he financed most of the picture due to studio politics. The story is amazing and proves all residents of this country are Americans and have rights.
I was an aircraft mechanic at Delta in ATL when they repainted these. Flew them in from Alabama. We all gathered to watch them come on in, it was gorgeous;
The most underrated, underappreciated, Oscar worthy movie of all time. And it's sad that the box office didn't reflect the great ness of this movie. And why it wasn't nominated for an Oscar?
Why they always make a movies about the American side? German pilots were also fought fearlessly in the sky. Why not making a movie about them too? They were also have a families. I never know how German pilots felt about war.
+Sarwar Nezar Nothing stopping Germany from doing so. Film isn't an American invention. They have the same tech, capital, and talent to create a WW2 film in the perspective of the German pilots. Though it's going to be damn hard to convince the populous to root for the nazis.
Johan Retsler Not saying it won't work. Saying it's going to be hard. Nazis aren't the most liked people in the world with the whole Holocaust thing. If a director can make a film where people are genuinely sympathetic to a nazi then that man deserves an Oscar.

Why is everyone complaining that it is unrealistic, its a Hollywood movie for god sake! Most Hollywood movies are like this because people want explosions and violence so they add a crap ton CGI and shit. In my opinion i think the CGI effects are pretty awesome, if i wanted to watch something realistic then i would watch a documentary or something else.
Saving Private Ryan was not a Hollywood movie? People are complaining because the Red Tails really is unrealistic, and the whole story is nonsens. Very disappointing result, they could have done much better.
People just don't understand the REAL capabilities of the fighters of the day. Some were not built very well and couldn't handle the stresses of some of the maneuvers. However, the Mustangs could handle everything that was shown in this movie. Their aluminum and steel construction could take quite heavy stresses and punishment, there are pictures of them coming home with pieces of their tails and wings torn completely off. There is a recorded and verified incident of the maneuver Lightning used where he pitched up and pulled a hard rudder, stalling out, being done in WW2. The show Dogfights is the best place you can find it, from there you can scour the web and you might be able to find some more detailed documents.
Zach Zier It's not just the stress handling. It's the gang rape ofthe laws of physics combined with clichés which makes a total bigger than the sum of the components.
canicheenrage What the planes did in this movie are possible, granted a few bits a re exaggerated a bit but I never saw a maneuver that wasn't possible. The cliches we can agree on all day, boring...

'Never lost a bomber under their escort.' They lost 25. '1944. The war hangs in the balance.' Hardly. The Axis powers were losing by this point and the Luftwaffe was scraping the barrel with experienced pilots.
@Adam Theirs a reason for the 46 loss number. When Congressional of Honor recipient Gen.. Jimmy Doolittle took command of the 8th AAC and later the 15th. he gave orders for the fighters to fly above and in front in box formation and upon coming in contact with the German Air Force, to abandon the bombers and to seek out and destroy the German Air Force. This caused the 46 bomber loss figure. As a result of this order to abandon the bombers the German Air Force losses were so great...that the allies soon owned the sky's over Europe and it assured D-Day was a success. You could not destroy the German Air Force staying with the bombers.
I personally think this movie was made, not to showcase the classic moral of it portrays but to showcase some CGI and make up for the first Tuskegee Airmen movie that had at best lackluster dogfight sequences. In that regard it did fairly well, the dogfights in this movie were superb. The rest...meh, average.
I just got out of there..its still chaos and people commit headon suicide rather than shoot accurately at an atrocious rate. Getting home to my dog is all that keeps me going.

One of my VERY favorite stories. I am Canadian white guy and a lot of black people live here because they are usually treated better than in the US. I do not understand the American bigotry and hope it goes away soon. Do that here and you end up in jail pronto.
Well the first thing, it's not black, it's poor people and black people happen to be that majority. Second thing, we have freedom of speech in America so ya, thank god no one will end up in jail for using words. Third thing, the poorest places are the ones run by American Democrats who in turn perpetuate stereotypes and continue to recieve votes from the poor community because they offer hand outs. Anyways, reread your comment. No one cares, except for you and your phsycotic friends, about skin color; get off the internet loser.

+DavIDLSY 1245 just such a shame that lucas Film got a hold of this story and bastardized it. As if the true story is not good enough to stand up on its own. There are some great reads on the subject. A lot of the "colored" units in WW2 received commendations for bravery. Wont be watching this.
The Nameless Tell me about it. I didn't really like it at first. But when I watched it again. I think its KIND OF under-rated. However, I think it should have been a TV movie not a live action movie. Also, I agree that the real story would have held up better. WHY COULDN'T THEY USE LEE ARCHER OR ANY OTHER REAL TUSKEGEE AIRMEN?!?!
BaconCandy Suzie Because the movie is totally unrealistic. On this trailer alone a Me-262 cannot outrun a Mustang, Mustang makes a 180 turn on a dime, and somehow a ship exploades when fired by a planes mg and cannon.
Pikkabuu Actually, it can do all three. The Me262 is faster, the mustang did a famous German manoeuvre performed by Hans Joachim and if the .50 calls penetrate the amour of the ships side at the ammunition area, it will explode and has been done historically. Also, the weather was hot in the area of the ship and the gun camera recorded a hatch to the ammunition being left open, as the crew wanted ventilation and were caught of guard.
Joel Malcolm You need a very very very lucky shot to be able to blow up the ships munitions with .50 call. Besides the fact is that historically the Tuskegee Airmen never sunk a ship. There is only one case where the Tuskegee attacked a ship which got disabled and later was scuttled by the Germans. As for the other two. Yes the Me262 could outrun the Mustang easily but this movie shows that Mustang could keep up with it. As for Hans-Joachim Marseille (Please use the full name, as searching only a partial name takes time.) turns, Marseille was an exceptional fighter and one whos skill was very high (Remember that even his comrades couldn't keep up with him.), so I highly doubt that you can find tons of people who can accomplishe the same manouveres as he did. But this movie again shows that such manouveres are easy to pull. And of course such manouveres were not used on Me262 as they were again too fast.
You tube is full of low self esteem losers. If you stay on UA-cam long enough you will see so much disrespect hatred abtd criticism. The haters have in common the belief that by putting someone else down is the only way to elevate themselves. If you feel other than these haters be proud of your feelings in spite of these losers.

emeraldhunter1 with no doubt, but it would be pretty boring to stare at a plane flying for 15 minutes in one direction and than killing one enemy aircraft
+Spectre _ No, a lot less un realistic that arcade mode lol! Well, spitfire with rudder @ 110mph can actually do the same maneuver that was done, I actually performed it in RB but ripped.
I just saw the movie. VERY well made! I havent ever seen modern movie with better airplane scenes! Very realistic! Also the story is very convincing and witout the usual famous actor who have the protagonist role and make supehuman acts. Very impressive!
No, it's quite unrealistic. One example: When the american fighters shoot, everything goes up in fire and explosion, just like if they were shooting with explosives. But in fact, american fighterplanes like the P 51 hat just machine guns. When the attack the ship, also this goes up in flames, by machinegun bullets! And later, when the american pilot get's hit by the german Me 262, it seems like the germans used normal machine guns (like the P 51 actually had), but that's wrong, because the Me 262 had four 30mm machine cannons that shot projectiles with explosives. A pilot being hit by this would get torn into thousand peaces and not sit bleeding in his seat...
Jolly Roger Ok. I laughed too when he attached the ship and exploded or the attack at the train but after having seen multimilioner movies like pearl harbor, The Aviator and others, I was very impressed by this movie. Many different airplanes realistic scenes (I am not talking about the machine guns) but heavy landings, formation of many bombers, smokes ecc. Here Airplanes had the protagonist role they deserve.
Jolly Roger LOL maybe you need to use your eyes. When the ship blows up, they were shooting propane tanks with their machine gun bullets. If you actually bothered to watch the scene, you would see all the propane tanks on the deck of the ship. As for the other times, like when they attack the camp, the bullets themselves didn't blow thing up, but in all the confusion, fire can spread. All it takes is one panicking person to knock over some flammable thing, into a cooking fire or something. There were tons of cooking fires in the camp. And true, you are right about the Me 262, but that's the only time you're right. I can't understand why so many people hate on Red Tails. If you want something that is EXACT, then watch a fucking documentary! For a Hollywood movie, I'd say it's top notch.
Winning Goalie I don't hate the movie. The problem is just that it bases on effects before facts, and that makes it competely unrealistic. Why should there be propanetanks on a destroyer, placed in a way that makes it absolutely likely they get hit and explode when attacked by machineguns? That is complete nonsens. And it's not nessecary to make these over the top action scenes, have a look at movies like Saving Private Ryan or Iwo Jima.
Jolly Roger Those other movies are good, especially Saving Private Ryan. The reason Red Tails has over the top action is because that's what the average American wants. From my experience, Americans have REALLY short attention spans. Sorry if you're American, I don't mean all of them, I'm Canadian myself haha.
Eh, i don't view carpet bombing as that heroic. One of those bombers they save might have killed some poor factory worker because the brass thought strategic bombing was causing substantial morale damage to the enemy. While it had economic benefits that impeded the German ability to use blitzkrieg tactics. Regardless of the sacrifice and risk bomber and escort pilots took, the 800,000+ German civilians and 60,000+ French civilians died in vain.
The story of the Tuskegee Airmen should just write itself. How George Lucas was able to turn it into this dumpster fire of a movie is beyond me. Unrealistic and appalling CGI, dreadful script, just an unbelievable tangled mess of a film. You're far better off watching any of the (many) documentaries on the subject - this is a travesty, and a poor reflection of the committed and brave men that flew the Red Tails...
This movie got some flak (not a pun i promise), but in all honesty i really enjoyed it. It told a story id never heard in depth if at all, and i though it did it pretty well. Had a lot of moving moments and the action didnt feel too over the top. George Lucas certainly is still a top notch filmmaker in my books.
Awkward dialogue, characters you don't feel emotionally invested in, and a comically evil German pilot for the villain (when the 'villain' should have just been the war and discrimination), but still a good movie. Gets way more hate than it deserves.

They had a horrible record lmao
We learn something new about us everyday it's sad they never inform us how we also had heros back in the day like this the risk there lives for people that hate us

+Sarwar Nezar the red baron
+Sarwar Nezar Nothing stopping Germany from doing so. Film isn't an American invention. They have the same tech, capital, and talent to create a WW2 film in the perspective of the German pilots. Though it's going to be damn hard to convince the populous to root for the nazis.
+Ricky Williams Works for infantry films. Would work for a LUFTWAFFE film also.
Johan Retsler
Not saying it won't work. Saying it's going to be hard. Nazis aren't the most liked people in the world with the whole Holocaust thing. If a director can make a film where people are genuinely sympathetic to a nazi then that man deserves an Oscar.
+Ricky Williams Sure, we all know that. But I say people view the Soldiers as German before Nazi ones. Just like in the movie Stalingrad.

Wow, this is a weird Star Wars Movie.
Robbie Robinson this released several months before Disney bought LucasFilm.
Joke?
This is one of my favourites!I really like how they do a damage of planes and maneuvers and all that. It's just looks great!!
The Red Tails was not unrealistic or this movie but saving private Ryan that was super fake and its a shame
Zach Zier
It's not just the stress handling.

'Never lost a bomber under their escort.'
They lost 25.
'1944. The war hangs in the balance.'
Hardly.
The rest...meh, average.
this is like a dramatic look at war thunder arcade battles

Well the first thing, it's not black, it's poor people and black people happen to be that majority. Second thing, we have freedom of speech in America so ya, thank god no one will end up in jail for using words. Why so many likes but so many negative comments? I liked the movie. The action and plane-maneuvering moreover.
Joel Malcolm
You need a very very very lucky shot to be able to blow up the ships munitions with .50 call.

Jolly Roger
Ok.
Winning Goalie
I don't hate the movie.
This film is underrated.

The story of the Tuskegee Airmen should just write itself. How George Lucas was able to turn it into this dumpster fire of a movie is beyond me. Unrealistic and appalling CGI, dreadful script, just an unbelievable tangled mess of a film.
It should get even more hate. Its a movie were is summer in Italy and at the same time winter in Germany !!!!!
