The motor swap has began! Follow along as we convert this GU Patrol over to the Isuzu 4JJ1 Motor! This swap is made possible with the help from Diesel Conversions Australia and is actually quite a simple swap to do!
In this episode I remove the ZD30 from the Patrol and we tidy up the new motor ready for its new home! Safe to say im very happy with the outcome of this episode and its getting me so keen for more! Lets smash this one out!

Super keen for the rest of the build series. Have had my eye on doing a 4J patrol for the last 12-18months but haven’t seen many done or know how they perform in the patrols. I’ll definitely be following along to see the end result!
I’d also be keen on a full cost breakdown of the engine swap once you finished.

I have just purchased a GU 07 and plan to do the same conversion down the track. In the future once you have completed these build videos could you do another video using all of the footage you will gather from the swap, a video with commentary explaining in detail what you are doing? It would be an awesome video to flick back through while working in the garage on our own conversions!
I'm in the process of doing my 4jj1 into my patrol can't wait. Like to see how the exhaust is done. The bling kit looks all right.
This is honestly the best (or at least my favourite) 4wd channel, not over the top just nice and chill and everything done yourself.

My 4j GQ project was given the go ahead by the Mrs cos I said I could do it in 6 months and be finished before our first child.
Nearly 5 years later and its finally registered.
Having said that there was no conversion parts available then and the only thing in the car that's Nissan is the brake master and booster so a little more involved than a plug and play kit.
Very interested to see how straight forward their kit actually is.
Love to see some detail on the wiring and keeping all the factory stuff tidy.
@@RoamLyfe should of waited 20 mins for the rtv to harded,,or use proper gaskets..&,proper torque.. that rtv squashes out, gets in motor fks it..
Following intently but having just had my 2016 ZD30 (88K klms) fitted with Cross Country Intercooler, Tillix & ECU tuned by ECPT (East Coast Performance Tune), with outstanding results, I'm highly unlikely to follow suit right now, but a 4JJ1 would be a serious contender for engine swap should my ZD30 ever say I've had enough, but hopefully that never eventuates cause irrespective of how easy you're going to make this look, any engine swap is a nightmare.
So looking forward to how well this works out, my concerns are RE4 compatibility, engine bay fitment, driveability, engineering & insurance.
I'd actually opt the keep Asin 6 speed box if that was at all possible to keep torque delivery within better rev range, my RE4 does struggle to keep engine in best torque delivery range, primarily due to lack of cogs in my opinion.

what sensible people do,is fit a 4.2tdi..why,,because they last,& no fkn computer bs..sensors that sht & leave you stranded in the desert to die,,think about it..or just go to the local beach.. all those tune kits are bs..they stress the engine, you need torque, not hp..ie 4.2tdi..or any 6 cyl diesel. computerised 4 cyls are rubbish.. i have 240 hp, 700nm..no computer..
@@harrywalker5836 yes, valid point, but the 4JJ1 is also rated as a reliable donk. I had a 4.2lt TD, it was a guttles beast, overheated terribly, impossible to tow without overheating, in comparison the 3lt CRC goes so much better, tows well & is so smooth in comparison to tractor motor drive line vibes.
Also had a 4.5lt D4D Toyo as well, but my ZD30 in its tuned state is far superior to the toyo also. Experienced owner of all the renowned rigs, I'll risk it, & tour/tow/off-road in comfort myself.

Just a bit of clarity… numbers does include Nm power numbers..so too me and I would presume others torque is covered by my comment above.

Get the inlet manifold hot washed at an engine shop man! They come up like new I recommend it.

From what I understand they have full bolt in conversion options, including engine mounts zd30 to 4jj1
Im actually in the market for a 4jj1 swap patrol right now and if I can't find one im switching to a landcruiser....been looking for a new rig for 3 months and there's maybe a half dozen 4.2l diesel patrols on the market actually worth 30 odd thousand and the rest are ruined imo haha this will be a great watch

@@Andrew-hu1bx after my dad owned a Nissan navvy I’m not game enough to buy a Nissan aye, and when we strayed away from Toyota again we had nothing but dramas with the d max, never had a problem with Toyota, my hilux has 400 thousand hard Ks on it, been a work Ute and she still goes like a dream. My dads got a 105 series cruiser and the only bad thing we can say about it is the steering, it’s never steered nicely, and no one can work out why, he’s had it to about 100 places and it hasn’t worked once, so he’s gonna chuck a gu steering box in it, and get rid of the superior arms, and drop it down to 2 inch lift. But i do kinda like a coil cab gq Ute aye.
@@kadenmackriell4751 my 105 @ 3" lift with standard arms and 5deg correction bushes steers nice .. was considering superior arms, might leave it alone after your dad's experience ! NB, my family has two 04_ZD30 Navs with ECU remaps going strong .. but would swap them both for this build .. love my full coil 105_FTE, but a chopped GU dual cab, with 4JJ or FTE conversion, is the - 'other favourite' conversion, I'd like to be wheeling, or have sitting in the garage👌
@@Oz4me_craig yeah we got it second hand and ever since we got it it steered like a piece of shit. I reckon it was in a bingle before we got it and nothing was said about it bc we checked the revs check and it said it was never crashed or anything. We’ve taken it into like 100 specialists and none of them can fix it, and we drive other 105s and they steer nice. So we are gonna get rid of the superior radius arms drop it down to 2 inch lift, and put a gu steering box it it and if that doesn’t work we gonna sell the fucken thing

Would a European diesel say from BMW with a 3.0 diesel turbo straight six for instance be any good in a Ute?

The rocker cover and plates are looking nice. Going to have to pain the engine bay to match now. Im not sure if i missed it in a previouos video, is that a series 1 GU? Dash setup is probably the same as my s2 GQ and was hoping the wiring you got would deal with the 4jj1 to non modern dashes without having to mess around with signal conversion stuff
I keep thinking about painting it and how much works involved! 😕😕 not sure yet!!
As for the patrol it’s a series 6, basically same as the 4 but not sure about wiring yet I’ll have to figure it out!!

Might not be as widely used but they're certainly making some power out of them. (450+hp unopened)

I certainly agree that the 4j is a much more reliable engine but swapping a 4j from a crd zd is absolutely pointless. 😁
Looks clean would definitely go +50s to just have a little more tickle capability front mount would be a must to do you can see the the blings looks sick so far though

Nice swap. Use oven cleaner foam spray to clean all the greasy stuff in the inlet manifold. Did mine and it looked like new.
Oven cleaner eats the coating off alloy and in a month or so you'll see bulk corrosion...inside would be fine once covered in soot but be careful getting it on anything visible

4jj1 power! This 3 liter engine does over 1000hp in thailand, absolutetly a beast for its size.

Check out performance tourers and Tommy Barnes, he has a lot of 4JJ1 stuff aswell as exchange intake manifolds.
As usual, we never get to know how much things cost - probably because its too much, and would be discouraging.

I’m very jealous of a converted patrol
I would prefer a wagon infinitely to a dual cab, I fuckin love my car but if there was a wagon version I would have picked that any day, it just suits me better to have my stuff and dog in a cabin rather than the tray
, plus for me and my family the cab is a bit small since my siblings are all about 6ft lol
Bought it for that 4jj though and I have no complaints, wouldn’t mind getting injectors tested tho then maybe some 30s and a tune

Honestly those cranes would come with at least a 1.5x safety factor from the designer for corrosion, ‘low IQ’ and rough handling allowances. So lifting 275-300kg with it on the 250kg point once while it’s brand new would be completely fine.
Yeah that’s what I was thinking!! I think it’s more for tipping over aswell, it still had to be pulled hard on the back to do a wheel stand so I thought it was fine 👌👌

Love to see a bloke turning spanners himself. Great production. I like the 4.5 Cummins idea more than the old jackaroo motor 😉 but there's definitely more Tokyo ghetto drift in the 4j. That's a lot of effort for essentially the same donk though.
I've put a 3.9 isbe cummins in a discovery 2 landrover and even on 35s it was abit too low geared for the motor. For my y61patrol i did think about a cummins but decided against as gearing in a patrol would need too be made drastically higher to make it a nice drive and i never see many people keep there cummins swapped patrol after. Anyway now partway through installing a bmw M57 3l i6 made alot more sence to me.
A nice easy trick to clean those intake manifolds out, get yourself some oven cleaner. Soak it over night then hose it out
Well he wasn't wrong, motor does indeed look pretty sick after being painted and doctored up with the fancy stuff.
Surprised the re4 auto failed so let us know the problem. Hope the flex plate is heavy duty and torque converter is upgraded too. Anything is better than a zd....oh cept a turbo td42 kettle which is often a really bad choice! Helmet on....
Oven cleaner then pressure wash for the intake manifold dude.

2 3.0 diesels to choose from? Maybe should of considered the M57 from a x5 😅
A simple flash tune gets you over 270hp and they have rods bigger than any diesel 3.0 you have seen! And at 1/3 the cost

Hey mate, have a look at modified explorer for 4jj1 stuff he’s a legend in the community and provides too notch stuff
Another way to lower vehicle is leave wheels on and flatten them that’s how we do it in our workshop doing engine swaps on lifted fourbies
Ultra sonic clean for the manifold, and block that darned egr
There is also the BMW M57, another great engine that is very capable.

Still don't see the 4j hype, have had 4js for the last 7 years done nearly everything you can do to em HD mechanic by trade. All they do is snap cracks and drain the wallet dry but as long as people keep swapping them all the engines in my shed keep going up in resale so yeah.

@@Darioros326 I didn't say you couldn't , I have twins on mine and I've seen some push 50 psi, it doesn't matter if you build these engines and put a forged crank in them, the crank is always the weakest link

You forgot one of the most mis-understood engines, the ZD30. Yours was/is pretty stock so you havent seen what they do when modded.
As for why to convert: 3L out, 3L in, 4 banger out, 4 banger in, Easy change on rego/compliance.
@Vuoiy Dui Sorry, had to re-read your message several times, not sure who you find is funny.... As for my comment, the donk coming out has not had much done considering the standard parts and stock intercooler. The ZD's do actually go alright when looked after and modded correctly. As for my expirience, who cares? Only had grease under my nails for over 35 years....

The best thing about this build is if you get sick of it, you’ll easily sell it for top dollar. With the gold, the chromeies and all the red bling bits and pieces, I’d bet some Italian or Greek guy from the city, who on the weekend loves to head to scrub and blow a few pigs away with his beretta would be all over it 😂 just joking my ethnic bros , calm down. But seriously good build, love the channel, it will explode even further after this episode 👍
