  • Our small pecan orchard is irrigated using our onsite well system. This video highlights the micro-emitter nozzles, tubing and piping sizes to each tree, valve system, and well pump details. We have made a few changes over the years but the basics of this system have worked for our orchard for the last 15 years or so.

When you go to adding the second emitter, think about going underground with your water and installing a plastic tank and injection system to fertilize your trees. I know you said you were thinking of adding another zone but plan ahead for more zones. The bigger the trees get the more water you will need and the larger zones will take more water. Enjoyed the video and look forward to more.

How is the 1/4" tubing that feeds your emitters tied into the 3/4" "black plastic hose" (3:00)? I have 11 newly planted pecan trees and you have inspired me to install irrigation! Getting tired dragging the hose around to water!

The 1/4" tubing has a coupler on the end and you use a tool to puncture the side of the larger tubing and insert the coupler into the larger tubing. The tool is sold at most hardware stores. It's just a plastic punch tool of a certain diameter.

Ever had a problem with the pipes bursting or freezing during winter?

The winter temperatures are generally mild where I live. Also we aren't using the irrigation during that time of year and we shut off the water to the irrigation system and the lines are drained.

Very clear explanation! How many GPM is your well pump?

I'm not too sure. It was installed before we bought the property. It is a 2.5 horsepower pump if that helps.

How is it going now? I'm planning a similar irrigation for an orchard. Do you feel the 1/4 inch gives enough for a tree? Do you think it would be good to have two emitters for each tree to cover both sides?

Our one 1/4" tubing for each tree has worked well for now. Our trees are about 20 years old and likely could use two emitters per tree. To do that I'll have to split into more zones because my well pump can't keep up the pressure then. If you use one, you could just leave the water running for a longer period of time.
