  • The second episode of our Nut Dynasty Pecan Irrigation video is here. In this video, we look in detail at how we ran the water to our pecan trees at the Bag-A-Nut Research Orchard. Irrigating pecan trees is key to successful pecan trees. Pecan irrigation systems don't have to be super complicated, let's take a look.
    PART ONE CLICK HERE: • Irrigating Pecan Trees...
    Your pecan trees will do better if they are irrigated, but this step is often overlooked because of the headaches involved in most irrigation systems for pecan trees. Watch this video to see our low-maintenance watering system and some of its perks!

    Great vid. Ive been roped into helping set up a garden and fruit orchard at the inlaws' new property next spring (the orchard is more for me 😁). Ive been researching deep tree watering and will be helpful out there in the desert. This is a great method also mounting the open ended rubber tube to buried stand pipes.

    Justin, I really liked your video, have watched it multiple times. I'm using your design for my apple orchard - - - 288 trees (12 rows of 24 trees each on16' centers). I'd like to know more about other mechanical design details (pumps, pressure regulators, air/vacuum valves, etc.) if you care to share.

      I’m glad you’ve found our video to be helpful. I’m afraid I’m not the guy to take you deeper into mechanical design as It doesn’t take much for me to have to call my plumber buddy or uncle. I hope your apples do well!

    Really enjoying your videos and approach to raising pecans. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. We have a homestead and are currently planting our nut trees.

    Electrical tape will go bad very quickly due to uv-rays. I would consider a metal zip-tie or a copper wire

      Thanks for the comment. I bury mine so they are not in direct sunlight. I have some that are over five years old and going strong. However, I agree that your suggestion is a better long term solution.

    Thanks for all of it. I'm starting my video watching and find your presentations really engaging and SOOO simple... GREAT!
    I have 8 mature trees that have not been attended to - and I'm starting to. In setting up irrigation, how much of the circumference of the roots (drip line) do you recommend watering? Seems like I ought to do it at 4-8 points around each tree to get sufficient water and balanced load. Trees are 30 - 50' diameter from drip line to drip line.
    One upright per tree with 4-8 tubes? Any guidance appreciated.
    AND... water through winter? Stop when?
    Thanks for anything, Silas

      Thanks for watching!
      I keep watering through the winter but decrease the amount. The main reason I do it is just to keep the irrigation lines clear and solenoid valves functioning.
      I personally would not do more than four watering points per tree as I believe the roots will eventually find the water.

    I noticed at the end that you have about a 6" PVC around your riser. How deep does that go and does it affect the freeze proofing of the trunk line/riser line? Loving the videos and learning a lot. I'm considering doing this commercially in the southeast as my "retirement" many years from now. I'm considering gulf coast area, so freezing is an issue, just not a huge one.

      Great question John. I added that PVC piece around the riser in hopes that it would be easier to visually inspect the area. What happened, in reality, is ants and dirt just filled it in, and it was deemed pointless. I don't think it would help with freezing issues. Being below the surface should be plenty of protection from freezes.
      Good luck with your venture! I hope you go for it! I'm glad I can be a little help along your journey. I am no expert, just a guy who did just what you're about to do!

      Thank you, glad you like the video! We don't have a specific supplier we recommend. We actually just shopped around for the best price. Ended up buying in Jacksonville FL and trailering it up to GA.

    Thank you for you videos I’m about to use this method. I was wondering if it would be feasible to run two quarter inch lines from one riser to feed two trees. I’m wanting to know if I can run one line between two rows and water two trees from each riser? Would that just depend on pump size?

    • @BagANut
      @BagANut  2 роки тому +1

      Justin, you can do all that. Just keep in mind that if you put to many 1/4” lines on any given main line the trees at the end of the that main line may not receive as much water as the ones near the beginning. Put a 5gallon bucket at the end and beginning of the line and see if the water is flowing equally before you bury it.
      I hope that helps!

    Silas, We have ground squirrels in our area and folks that have installed subsurface drip irrigation in orchards have experienced destruction by rodents. Have you had any trouble with rodents chewing through the vinyl tubing?

    • @BagANut
      @BagANut  4 роки тому +1

      Richard,
      Thanks for the question. I have not had any rodent issues yet. I have had the occasional ant bed on the end of the tube, but that is about all the issues I can think of that I have had with animals on the irrigation. If you have any issues and figure out suggestions for them, let us know! We would love to share your experience.

      Well just to give you some more feedback, I like your irrigation method so much that I am installing the same type of system in my orchard. I have also shared your videos with my local PVC pipe dealer in hopes that it will help other people. Thank you so very much for taking time to share your insights and knowledge!
      By the way I own 2 BagANut rolling pecan harvesters!!! Thanks Again!
