I don't know what I was expecting with the white, but that opaque was definitely not it! I think I expected it to just be so watery you'd end up with chalky patches. It's nicer than I thought! I don't think I'd want anything but that white though 🤔
Right? I was like “these dark colors can’t even be opaque i don’t even wanna KNOW what color this white is gonna be” i assume it was going to look like painting with milk or something. But boy is that a beautiful white!
Thank you for this review Teoh! Once again you have been most informative, on the fence as to which one I should purchase to purchase to use for value sketches. It is definitely food for thought.
I haven't read all the comments so maybe someone already wrote this, but for maximum color pay off I dip these blocks in water and then paint with them directly onto the paper. I love the white and was also pleasantly surprised to see how opaque it was!
Not gonna lie, I clicked on this video having no idea what these were. But the video was good enough to have me watching until the end, and subscribing.
Great review! The black and white set seems great for tonal studies. I was surprised to see how opaque the white actually was. I have the earth tone set and really like it for quick light washes in my sketchbooks.
You should take the bigger cork set and add your favorite blocks of color to it. Make a custom palette with the primaries as well as some earth tones and a white!
You should get a sheet of Yupo to use as a palette for the graphite blocks. You can scribble on the sheet with the block to get a good amount on your brush.
Thats really interesting that the graphite block behaves different compared to the graphite in the tin. I thought they would be all the same. Because i couldn't decide which one to get, the graphite stick or the one in the tin and then i got the stick because it was cheaper ;). Maybe the one in the tin has the best quality ? How about making a video comparing all three graphite versions? The stick, the block and the tin? :)
I wonder, the tin has obviously been in use for some time, contrary to the new block in the set. Could it be that the graphite in the tin especially because of the closed lid has become moist with use and therefor more easily soluble? It is the same producer after all.
Thanks Teoh! I think the circular tin is better for a value range but the trio of black/gray/white is worth purchasing just for that awesome opaque white!
I bought the white after seeing this video and I love it! I've never tried gel pens and white gouache, and honestly don't think I'll bother anytime soon - I'm super happy with the block, and it'll last me a very long time I'm sure. I want a really good black version, something that gets as effortlessly pigmented and opaque as the white one. I'm using ink for now, but I'd love a solid block or pan that I could just keep in my palette and use with a fine brush.
Thank you for showing us the entire set! I have only the black block and I mainly use it to draw lines with the sides. After that I go in with a slightly damp brush and dissolve part of the line, turning it into a shadow. I love how that works. For the whites I use gouache, but this white graphite looks really lovely. 👍
The white really impressed me. If it's sold seperately, I might even consider buying it. I did get the round graphite tin a few months ago, by the way and I love it. I like to use it on toned watercolor paper for monochromatic pieces.
The grey one, you could draw it onto paper and then use that as a palette. From Jackson’s website: “Inspired by traditional tailor's chalk, ArtGraf Tailor Shape is a rich, water-soluble block of pigment. It is extremely soft and provides artists with a wide range of shades depending on the amount of water used, from light, transparent tones to deep, rich, opaque colours. When diluted, the Tailor's Shape acts similarly to an ink, it can also be used dry as a drawing medium by itself. It can be used as an entire block to draw or paint with or colour can be picked up from the block with a brush, similarly to how you would use traditional watercolour paint.” So it sounds a bit like Derwent Inktense pencils and paints.
I have a graphite stick from this same company and it is hard to get dark values with it. I also found I preferred hot press paper with graphite. I enjoy using the graphite, but might look into the tin next time! Or maybe the monochromatic set. Thanks for the great review!
Great review - thanks! The sketch actually looks very nice. I’m surprised, because I thought it was a mess going on - so many blotches 😅 It must even out as it dries. Do you think the grit would be hard on good brushes?
Whoa! That white is the main surprise here. It's more opque than white watercolour! Very impressive. Will you consider using the white more often? Or any if the artgraf blocks? That graphite in the set though is not very impressive. Too difficult to get a good tint strength. Which is surprising given how easily the graphite in the tin dissolves.
WoW! The white is amazing. I even ordered a manga ink that doesn't do such a good job on getting white accents. Thanks for your review, I am gonna get the white to accent my charcoal drawings. Looks much better than white pastel or anything alike. I enjoyed your blog for a long time now, but only recently discovered your youtube channel for some reason. I really appreciate how much you pay attention to details and your book picks :) They are always unusual but worthwhile.
I've watched other artists review these sets. But everyone else takes the block out and colours the paper with it first, then adds water to the paper (as you did at the 3:02 mark). However, I think yours is the only review that has put water on the block to lift the colour and then put it on the paper. I don't think there's any "wrong way" but just seems you are the only one that does it this way... that I've discovered so far. :) (I think if I had this set, I'd use them the same way you did at the start)
Wow, so interesting! When you first laid the colors down wet, they didn't seem like they would go together, but they actually complement each other quite nicely! I wonder if you scrubbed a bunch of that graphite on a separate piece of paper, could you then use that to get darker values (i.e., almost using that like a pan)? Not that I need more art supplies, but if I ever decide to treat myself, I'll consider this....
If you let water sit on the Graphite, like you do with Watercolors, would that help dissolve it easier? I really like the texture of the Graphite-on-paper technique.
Looks far too 'fiddly' for me. I like the way the white works but a small tube of white gouache works just as well. Always admire the way you have a go at all sorts of media. Good for you Teoh.
Thanks for another detailed demo. I always believed that it all boils down to skills rather than materials... Materials can only help so much but if you don't know how to fully utilize them, it's kind of useless
i dunno, i mean i feel like the graohite could lead to great things, and if you know how to use the texture to your advandage, the pieces you make could end up really cool
This is more of an Amazon question but maybe you know. If I follow the affiliate link and add the item to an Amazon wishlist, then go back and buy it from the wishlist later or someone buys it from the list as a gift for me, does it still "remember" to credit you for that sale? I definitely want to try these but can't get them right away, so I added them to a wishlist, and then it occurred to me that I want to make sure you get your affiliate link dues for the sale when I do get them.
The purchase has to happen within 24 hours after clicking the link. So before you buy next time, just click on ANY affiliate links from my UA-cam channel or at parkablogs.com (easier to find links there).
@@teohycThanks! That's really good information to know. I will definitely make sure to return to your links when I get these (and also if I buy Iraville's book since I hadn't even heard of that until your review of it, but it looked pretty excellent).

Is it possible the graphite block doesn't get as dark because it comes in a set? As in, you're supposed to mix it with the black and white to get different shades?
@@renzo6490 Graphite will not be as dark compared to black. Graphite is maybe just 85% black. And graphite WILL have texture/granulation. Black has the option of having texture/granulation too depending on the pigment.
Cool video and great sketch!! Like other commenters, I’m surprised by that white! How does it act when dry? Does it smudge or erase, or is it permanent?
The ink I'm using here is SketchINK from Rohrer and Klingner. For disposable ones, look for Uniball Signo, Air or Copic multiliner or any brand that specify waterproof ink.
John Howerton it's heavily staining, like the opposite of gouache. Doesn't move with water after it's dried and mostly/semi transparent. The white is really the only true opaque. I use this to get a darker color in my watercolor, and it lets me go dark to light, but still transparent.
I have been painting in watercolour for decades, and this is crap paint...Watercolour is difficult enough, why make it harder with this stuff?..If you want an opaque white don't use gouche white either use FandW white ink...Very opaque and you can paint over it and mixes very well with all watercolours..

I like the texture effect for the paved areas.
The texture of this particular paper with the graphite block application probably would make a nice cobble stone effect on the alley ground.

There are many brands that make water soluble pencil. Eg Derwent, Cretacolor, or even watercolour pencils (get light blue).
They look fun.
Very interesting. I wonder how it would work with watercolour, as an underlayer?
It could. I know artist Steven Reddy likes to use grey as an underlayer before painting watercolour.
Awesome thanks for making the video.
