I’ve been revisiting all of your reviews on Artgraf products again. I’m still debating this purchase. I have a set of thick water soluble graphite sticks. I’m looking for something portable to use for quick value studies. Thank you Teoh!😊
Wow. Thank you for introducing this medium with us today. Thanks also for all your reviews on Amazon.com. They are incredibly helpful. I cannot wait to purchase my own tin of ARTGRAF water soluble graphite soon!! It looks like you had so much fun with it. Your love and passion for art truly shows and shines when you talk about your artwork, your materials, and give out tips and techniques. Thank you for emphasizing tricky points and good ideas when you teach. I will definitely look into purchasing some spray fixative soon!
Hi Theo, I have been rewatching this video and all the graphite-related ones recently because I am trying to get used doing value studies. I really enjoyed them and always appreciate so much the effort and great explainations you put in you demos and reviews 😊 have you tried by any chance the Derwent XL Graphite blocks that came out recently? The new ones, natural (not the colored ones) version of graphite compressed chunky big blocks. I got the tin of 6. I find them hard to use as a water-soluble medium though. Very uneven textures, I can't achieve a smooth wash, and they will smudge a lot after dry. It doesn't really stay put on paper and it takes only a careless light touch of your hand on a portion of your work to move the dried graphite. I really hope you will get a chance to do a review on this product... Hopefully you could show a way to use them, better than I tried to figure it out so far!
It is difficult to create smooth wash with graphite. That's just the way it is with graphite. Whether graphite will fix on paper depends on the binder used. E.g. Watercolour graphite from Daniel Smith will not smudge, just like other watercolour colours. This Artgraf graphite is quite resistant to smudging, but it's not 100%. You will need to spray fixative on graphite to prevent smudging.
Thank you so much for this comprehensive review. I had a gift voucher for my favourite art store and, on a whim, I chose ArtGraf (as well as a Kolinsky sable travel brush ☺️). I’m just starting to play now... it’s beautiful. Can you tell me if it’s compatible with watercolour? And if so, are there any special tips/techniques to ensure you achieve the desired outcome? Cheers and thanks 🙏
Hi. That looks like a fun medium :) To my surprise, I have found our local (South Korean) online shop has the Artgrah watercolor graphite and just ordered it. Have you tried to mix it with regular watercolor to have some colored tint? How is it compared to your sepia liquid pencil you did in other video on monochrome drawing? Thanks.
+Teoh Yi Chie I haven't used graphite before and I was wondering because Derwent has Graphitint color pencil lines. Does that mean you don't like the Derivan sepia liquid pencil, either?
nabi767 The sepia liquid pencil is a bit too patchy for my liking. Anyway, graphite does not work well with watercolours because graphite's colour looks dead when used alongside watercolours.
+Teoh Yi Chie Thanks for your opinion and introducing interesting art products. I have read a Derwent Graphitint review and he said at least try indigo one, unfortunately we don't sell Derwent color pencils individually here.
The packaging said it is erasable but I haven't been able to have any success with erasing the marks after it is dry. Is there a certain eraser or method to use?
eh, I use fixative over everything anyways :D Always scared to think what could happen to a watercolour painting if it got wet or stored in a humid area. plus the expensive schmincke stuff helps with my fading phobia.
Hello, I was checking on the subject and found many different types of fixative and varnishes gloss or matt. Would you please elaborate on your experience, Thank you.
It is quite permanent when dry. Of course if you erase hard, it going to smudge, but other than that it's really resistant to accidental touch. But I don't think other media will work well on it though.
+Katherine LoCurto You can use it with watercolour. However, I find that graphite does not look good together with watercolour. Try it. I've a video on why that is so at ua-cam.com/video/zn9wvk8B36I/v-deo.html
+Teoh Yi Chie I had a feeling. In general I don't like graphite, but I find your use of it in today's video intriguing. I might try it for fast sketches as you demonstrate. Thanks for all you do.
I want to try this product; you make it look very doable. Do you have Amazon links for it? I think there are some links for other things. It would make it quick to just hit the link to purchase. Thank you for sharing, I appreciate hearing your impressions while you work. be well. bye now
@@teohyc thanks for the reply... But the other who tested it ...they can lift and re-wet it...Especially the kneadable one and also the one you using..
I just got some Derwent water soluble graphite pencils and now I need a little tin of this art graf. Thanks for a great tutorial.
Just bought this graphite today. Can't wait to try it out
Interesting product. I actually like the granulating texture you've got on the last draw. Thanks for the review :)
EXTRAORDINARY SKETCHES
I love the little tin of Artgraf. I use the lid to take off some water/pigment.
What a nice demonstration, I just found this graphite, so I’m going to give it a go, looks like fun
holy cow! that gets really dark right off the bat. I want to try this product :D Thanks for your awesome videos!
Thanks very much! I just bought some but wasn't quite sure what to do with it, so this helped!
Tyvm for the analysis. Greetings from Southern California. Keep up the good work.

It's worth the money. There's a good amount that can last for a long time
Excellent demonstrations. I only just discovered this medium a few minutes ago. It's very appealing for me. Thanks. :-)

+Peggy Yang Thanks :-) If you want to work with graphite and want to keep your work, definitely use fixative over the work.
Very useful review! Thanks 👍

Graphite is usually best used on its own. When used with watercolour, the colour combination is going to look weird.
thank you for the demo
Nice review! Nice work! Thank you!
When dry on paper and you rub tissue over it, does any graphite come off have you noticed?
Some graphite will come off. If you want to prevent that you will have to use fixative
@@teohyc i see… thank you - I was not sure if it was normal :-)
Have you tried the stick or even the large 250 g one ? I have trouble making dark tones with watercolour graphite but I really enjoy it.
Graphite will not be completely dark. Graphite won't be as dark as charcoal.
@@teohyc Thanks
Looks like some great stuff. I got a watercolour graphite stick here I like to use but it`s colour isn`t so intense.
+firecloud What brand is the graphite stick? Artgraf also has a graphite stick and it's quite intense. I'll review that in the future.
+Teoh Yi Chie It`s from Koh-I-Noor Hardtmuth - Graphite Aquarell Soft Progresso.
CAN YOU MIX IT WITH WC, TO GET DIFFERENT TONING?.
Graphite can mix with watercolour, but the colour will look dead
Thank you! Did you try china ink colorized? One or two layers can work if ink value is light Still experimenting.

Have you tried to mix it with regular watercolor to have some colored tint? How is it compared to your sepia liquid pencil you did in other video on monochrome drawing? Thanks.
+nabi767 Colours usually don't look nice when you mix watercolour with graphite. I prefer to use graphite or sepia alone for monochrome drawings.
+Teoh Yi Chie I haven't used graphite before and I was wondering because Derwent has Graphitint color pencil lines. Does that mean you don't like the Derivan sepia liquid pencil, either?

Is it possible to use this graphite without water, like a pan pastel? If yes does it erase well?
It needs water to activate and re-activate. When dry, the graphite is almost permanent and does not rub off easily, just like watercolour.
The packaging said it is erasable but I haven't been able to have any success with erasing the marks after it is dry. Is there a certain eraser or method to use?
+Kristin Cozzolino What I mean is, it will smudge when erased, but it will not erase totally. It behaves like watercolour.
Why is it better than carrying around a block of watercolor??? Thank you for a great presentation!
Depends on which colour block you are carrying. People use graphite because they like the graphite look. There's also graphite in watercolour tube.
but how do you get the lid off!? I love this stuff but the lid is SO hard to get off once there's even the tiniest bit of build up
I usually twist clockwise and anticlockwise
I saw 6:38 and was like, "holy sh*t, what a drawing!"
eh, I use fixative over everything anyways :D Always scared to think what could happen to a watercolour painting if it got wet or stored in a humid area. plus the expensive schmincke stuff helps with my fading phobia.
Hello, I was checking on the subject and found many different types of fixative and varnishes gloss or matt. Would you please elaborate on your experience, Thank you.
I ordered the graphite and it arrived all broken up. Will adding water to it fix it?
Not sure about that, it may help. Anyway the broken pieces will not affect anything. They just look... broken that's all.
Is this easy to erase? Can you work back into the medium?
Once applied, and dry, it's difficult to remove. Behaves like watercolour
Can u make a review of Xl graphite from derwin
How would you say this product differs from a graphite watercolor paint?
I'm not sure. I've not used the tube watercolour graphite before. Maybe the tube ones is easier to dissolve since it is softer.
I can't tell if it forms a stable surface to be reworked upon cleanly in another medium or transported without smudging...
It is quite permanent when dry. Of course if you erase hard, it going to smudge, but other than that it's really resistant to accidental touch. But I don't think other media will work well on it though.
After using artgraf, before using fixative, can you add watercolor?
+Katherine LoCurto You can use it with watercolour. However, I find that graphite does not look good together with watercolour. Try it.
I've a video on why that is so at ua-cam.com/video/zn9wvk8B36I/v-deo.html

Thanks for your support. You can get it at www.amazon.com/Artgraf-Watercolor-Graphite-In-Tin/dp/B006ZAVT9A?tag=ttmus-20
Does this ruin good, expensive sable brushes at all, or should I have a special brush? Great video! I just bought some
Just wash your brush after each painting session and it should be fine. No need for special precaution
Meaning .. You can't re-wet after it dries?
It dries permanent
@@teohyc thanks for the reply... But the other who tested it ...they can lift and re-wet it...Especially the kneadable one and also the one you using..
can add colour to give photo effect
+Sylvia Costello Thanks for the idea.

I was hoping you were going to show how it erased with various erasers….
Once it's dry, it's very difficult to erase
