This was such a struggle, but I learned alot from the process. What I would love for you guys to take from this is that the frustration you feel is actually a good thing. That's when you are pushing yourself and learning new stuff in the process. Don't forget to subscribe, and leave me a comment. It's nice knowing you're out there. Hope the rest of your week is awsome! ✨🥰🎨
Thanks Cathy!! I know your advice is on target but sometimes it’s so hard to keep going. I guess that’s just being human and not perfect. So enjoy hearing from you and sharing. Good luck with your workshops and I look forward to you next video. 🥰🌻
I just love your take on art. I have been painting all my life and now tired of faces and my style. I get so frustrated I cannot get anything really doen. So when you are not happy with your work it so comforts I am not the only one. Tried one abstract last night and it was tough until I figured out some equipments and bubbleplastics and all I have aorund. Today I finishes and was pretty pleased. Thank you Cathy
You are so welcome! And I am so so happy to hear that you find things around the house that you can use. Your imagination is the only thing that stops you from using anything. Caps from bottles, string, plastic wrap and forks are all fun to use as well. 👍💙🎨
I actually love it. Because I'm a beginner and at that stage where I feel like I can't paint abstract. And I guess I gotta keep plugging away. I love that and the colors.
“You’ll fix it in the end!!!” I so enjoyed your video and how you honestly showed your frustration that we all go through- I get so mad sometimes when I can’t resolve a painting. I often have to set it aside for a bit and not look at it for a while….
Hello Cathy thanks so much for your time. When I go out sketching I try to use your techniek. So difficult to just let it go. I use a limited palette to keep it easier. Now we have the confinement here in France I try to find a place to hide. We are allowed to leave our houses for shopping and one hour for a walk. I love doing it and 'sometimes' it goes easy , but not often. Keep giving us pleasure love to watch you work. ,
Wonderful! So glad you are able to get out even tho corona is giving us a hard time atm. Keep trying and all of a sudden you will let go. It just takes time for your brain to adjust. 🥰🎨🤗
This was a great learning curve. I felt your frustration at times, you had something, then you lost it, but eventually you found something beautiful.I think I would have ended up with a big hole in the paper 😂x
Hey Cathy, greetings from a Louisiana colored pencil on paper landscape artist and subscriber! Returning to my art practice after several yrs at age 55, I'm exploring loose, intuitive abstract painting and enjoyed this video immensely. Even though your volume seemed low with no headphones or auxiliary speakers, I still got what I needed just by watching from my armchair in the forest with a hot cup of tea under the Full Harvest Moon in Pisces. Marvelous time for creativity and new beginnings. Thank you for creating and sharing.
Thanks Belinda. Glad you were able to get something out of it even with the poor audio. This was done before I had any kind of equiptment. Glad you enjoyed watching. ❤️
@@CathyMevik I learned from watching another artist afterward that you can use the gear/settings icon in the lower right of the screen to change subtitles from Off to English. It helps, but just watching is awesome.
Bravo!!! It is beautiful! I'm going to do an abstract tonight!!! You are so inspiring!!! I told my niece about you tonight....told her you are an amazing abstract artist!!! So glad I stumbled upon your work. Infact, I lost you and couldn't remember your name but then you commented back on my comment and THERE YOU WERE! Yay! I book marked you this time. ha ha
I've seen quite a bit of the copious work you've posted. What interests me most is the psychological cycle your "constructive -destructive" process takes me through. You plop down a lot of everything, going from calm to turmoil several times in a single picture. In the end I'm not sure what I'm left with other than your anguish. I don't think I'd like to paint like you but somehow I really enjoy watching you. Thank you so much
Haha.. Without that process I wouldn't be able to create. There is actually some structure to the madness. Glad you enjoy watching and I hope you don't feel worn out after watching. lol 💜
Good morning 👋😊 Cathy hope your well and staying safe and being careful as the numbers are rising here again sadly I always enjoy watching your painting come along and listen to what your saying and feeling as you go along the way from start to finish this morning I wasn't feeling the the red and blue was working for me tho I did love the lines you were adding tho till next time enjoy your week ☺️ 🙏🎨✍️🖌️💌
Thanks Linda. These colors were way out of my comfort zone as well, but I really enjoyed it even though i struggled alot. Kind like breaking the rules when it comes to color these days. Sorry to hear that those corona numbers are up in your part of the world. Same story here to. I have lots of time on my hands, so planning an online class now. We'll see how quick I get it done though. haha! Have a great weekend. ✨🎨💙
@@CathyMevik thank you Cathy looking forward to taking your class in the future so sorry to hear that the CV19 numbers are up there now too stay safe and please be careful as we had for the first time a dental appointment cancelled due to someone at his wife's work place came in contact with someone who did test positive so sad enjoy your weekend 👋🙏✍️🖌️🎨💌😊
Great video! This is my life right now! But you have given me my new mantra❤ " just keep going...I'll fix it in the end, JUST WATCH ME!" That's why I love abstract painting...it gets me through my abstract life!
I know what struggle feels like! If that piece were mine, it seems that there is so much saturated color that my eye darts around the page. I would dull some of the strong colors. Then I see that there is little warmth to the piece. Even just "tinting" the white gesso with a yellow ochre or quin gold would add a bit of warmth. Other than that, I love watching you do the mark-making!
Thanks Dee. I did dull most of my colors with grey and black, but wanted that pink to really shine. I can see what you mean , but I just wasn't wanting to use warm colors for this one. Glad you enjoyed. 💜🧡💛
I have three paintings that I'm struggling with at the moment which is unusual for me but I am pushing myself and like you, I've used colours I don't usually use in two of them, the temptation to put in what I know will work is so strong and that darn gesso lol on the brush or fingers it goes and it goes wrong again, strange creatures us artists we put ourselves through such torment but love every minute of it.
OMGsh... love this (loved it from about half way thru, really ;-) ) thanks for sharing your journey thru it - super helpful. First time I've seen you on TY. New subscriber!

Love how your struggle evolved Otis really wonderful success. So many times I gave up to soon and ended up throwing out the work and been frustrated with myself for quitting!!
Been there too Vickki. But now I know that when that frustration shows up it means I'm learning something new about myself and the way I paint, so I keep pushing. If it gets to be more than I can handle, I'll just walk away from it for a day or two, before I try to push on. 💜💛💚
once again, sharing your process is the most valuable element of your video. While I love the finished piece, I also loved it at various stages along the way that you didn't. It's helpful to know that other artists feel frustrated, lost, and stumble around in the dark looking for a way forward in an intuitive painting. Very inspiring!
Thank you so much Celeste! That is exactly what I started making these videos. To let people see that you do struggle and that mistakes are not always bad. 🧡💙💜 Glad you enjoy watching the process.

I use a sketchbook with regular sketch paper. Most paper works as long as you gesso your page first. Mine is a Wire-o-sketchbook from a german company called Kunst & Papier. Hope this helps.
Hello it is lovely. I wonder the marker tool
Thank you. Its called a fine liner. I fill it with dilute acrylic paint. ❤️
Cathy, why do you use gesso instead of titanium white to add lightness to your paintings? Is it because of the texture?
Because of the texture. I love the matte chalky feel it has to it. 🎨💜😊
Nice! New subscriber here...thank you😊
Thanks for subbing! 💗
I love your paintings! I recently started getting into abstract art you give me lots of inspiration. I also have a question what kind of acrylic markers do you use?
I use them all! Haha. I use Amsterdam, posca, molotow and liquatex. I probably have some pebeo and montanas in the mix too. ;)
What type of a marker did you use to draw over the paint?
That is a fine line applicator filled with diluted acrylic paint.😊
Hi Cathy how do you avoid brush marks on you painting?
No way! I love brush marks. ❤️❤️❤️
I love this even the whole in your page! 💕 New friend here & Subscriber!
Thanks Tracy! 🥰
Lovely! What kind of marker pens do you use?
I use so many different markers, but I love Amsterdam paint markers. 💖
Would u pls list your materials
Alot of work goes into the editing, but i'll try to do that in the future. If you are wondering about anything, just leav the timestamp in a comment and I'll have a look.
What was that roller with dots. It went so fast.
Just a patterened brayer. 💜
What kind of paper in your book?
The paper is sketchbook quality (130gsm), so it has to be gessoed. 👍🏼
Why do u gesso instead of white to cover what u don’t like?
I love the chalky texture and the hazey affect it leaves on the paper. 😊
So sorry you struggled so much with this one. I've always heard that when you get like that, it might be a good idea to walk away for awhile and then come back to it. Do you ever do that?
I do that alot when working on large canvases, but never when I work in my art journal. 🥰
The middle of the page seems too empty.
You could be right. My journals are only for exploration and practice. ❤️🧡💜
MahJENta rather than mah GEN ta ;o)
