  • In todays video we use our latest piece of equipment to grade the spuds. We needed to do this because there was too much clay in the box with the spuds and some of the spuds had started to sprout.

Many years ago I spent hours working on a machine just like that one. Riddling Spuds in Lincolnshire. The spuds were pied down for the winter time in long straw and earth pies, clamps perhaps ?.Single cylinder Lister engine pounding away all day, no electric power available. Yes three different sizes mainly, little ones usually went to the pigs eventually. Out in the field, cold, wet sometimes, frosty usually. Sometimes had to use an axe to break the soil off the pie. Spuds usually OK because wrapped in straw. Remember it well. Temember too the Potato Marketing Board coming and pouring purple die all over the spuds to stop them being sold, reason ?. To keep the price up in the shops . We still managed to salvage a few bags full though. You need a proper tatie fork, tines with a round ball on the ends.

Memories there.. we used to grow 150 acres of spuds back 25 year ago.. would have to grade 5 tones every evening and take them to Dublin markets for early morning... don't miss standing in a cold shed at 10 o clock at night grading and bagging after been working all day ...

Should have put a ratchet strap around the spud box & headstock, you could have tipped them out easily then.... the grader is a great machine 👍🏻

Have the same unit here, expect it has and extra layer and conveyor on the side so can separate into 4 sizes.
Will pile up the soil underneath over time but great for putting on veg patch or flower bed. Important to keep it level. Watch out for the lift conveyor getting jammed at the top.

The mild weather has them sprouting Phil. Removing the soil will make no difference if it stays mild. That severe frost last night should slow it down. The earlier varieties like Queens would be sprouting. Later varieties like Roosters would be fine.
