Hundreds of Yazidis celebrated the start of their calendar year on Tuesday.
Those attending lit candle wicks at the site of a holy shrine.
    STORYLINE:
Burning wicks for the start of a new year.
The atmosphere at the holy shrine of Lalesh in northern Iraq is a festive one.
Hundreds of Yazidis take part in a celebration to mark the year 6769 of the Yazidi calendar.
It's also the anniversary of the creation of the planet and the day the Lalesh holy shrine, the religion's most important temple and pilgrimage route, was created, according to Yazidi religion.
The Yazidi believe that a supreme being created the world, but does not rule it.
Instead, his will is carried out by seven angels, chief among them the Peacock Angel, known as Malak Taus.
The tomb of Sheikh Adi, in the town of Lalesh north of Mosul, is a Yazidi shrine and pilgrimage site.
"We came to the New Year feast so our wishes become true, and to pray for the Yazidis in our feast, the peacock angel feast,"
    says Besey Suliman.
"We came to light the wicks for the Yazidis and for those in captivity, as well as for all the people in the world," she says.
The Baba Sheikh, the head religious leader of the Yazidis, is present at the celebrations.
Much confusion surrounds Yazidi beliefs, but scholars say teachings are a mix of several traditions.
"The month of April is the month of renewal," explains Hassan Zeydan Hamid, a Yazidi religious man.
"It is the month of flowers, the month of goodness, and it is the month of giving," he says.
"We have celebrated this feast since the ancient times," he continues.
"I congratulate all the Yazidis and all those who support the Yazidis in the world," he says.
Over centuries, Yazidis have been the target of violence and purges, and have survived as a close-knit community that does not proselytise.
IS group militants rampaged across Sinjar in 2014, killing Yazidi men and abducting thousands of women and children.
Many followers of the minority faith are still missing, after women were forced into sexual slavery and boys were indoctrinated in jihadi ideology.
According to Kurdistan region's Office for Yazidi Abductees in Dohuk, an estimated 3,425 Yazidis have been freed from IS from a total of 6,417 Yazidi abductees.
Over 360,000 Yazidis are living in the displacement camps in Dohuk Governorate in the Northern Kurdish region of Iraq.
