  • The MXR JD M-299 Carbon Copy Mini Delay… is it any good? Well, I Wish I Had One Back in The 1970s - Super Pedal for The Size.
As I continue my journey back to playing guitar, effects pedals are of course part of that trip, and if I thought there were numerous pedals to choose from back in the 1970’s - In 2023, the choices just became almost impossible to keep abreast of what’s available, and new pedals just keep coming.
MXR Pedals need very little introduction, they began life in 1972 in New York, later to be owned by Jim Dunlop, and are well-known for their build quality. The MXR JD M-299 Carbon Copy Mini Delay comes in a dark metallic green finish and for such a tiny pedal it covers a fair bit of ground and without doubt feels and sounds like a quality pedal.
This video shows close-up easy to view illustrations of the pedal at work, and while not an exhaustive review and test, this should help anyone who is either considering a digital delay pedal or indeed the MXR JD M-299 Carbon Copy Mini Delay... Enjoy!

Nicely done, Stu !! "Detailed Operation View" is right. You nailed it!!
Never much of a delay guy but i bought my first gen CyberTwin from co-guit Jerry and he loaded in a bunch of great pre-sets along with what was factory loaded. I wish i could play it right.
One was Deep Delay Lead which i think was his. I think i know where this came from....
Among our set list in the '80s was Gamma's "Razor King". We or should i say Jerry and Rob nailed this.
I just tried to stay out of the way (shadowed the bass, not the keys for verses, open and barre chords and 9ths for the chorus). I believe he used a DOD DDL but, that was a long time ago.
When we did the reunion bit in '05, i'd found a cassette of us at a gig from then. Heard this.
When Jer called about a practice, i was almost in tears,,,,"We gotta do Razor King!!"
nope...."Too much hassle getting the timing right ". i dunno, man :)
BTW, a fan of MXR stuff. This seems like a cool pedal but i go back to '81 and the Distortion Plus my neighbor had.
Loved it and bought one of my own. Later learned Randy R used one. Pretty sure mine was 'on' for the tv bit.
The Boss Heavy Metal pedal was getting some good press. Sorta poor at the time so offered the Dist Plus as trade.
I never really got on with the HM2,,,,option anxiety with the 2 band eq??? I gave it to my son to give to a GF when they were in Jr High. Can't say how things worked out.
"10 or so years ago, i bought another Dist Plus.
It's on a pedal board with other dirt boxes and more.I need to use it (and everything else) more.
Long post, sorry,,,,hit a raw one here ;)
    Rock ON!!

Many thanks Glen... Just back from the North of Scotland and found the "Book" waiting for me... but now just got called out on an emergency job... so... drat! I'll check it later tonight but what I saw after a quick flick through - it looks like a really good read and a lot of pictures that bring back so many memories... PS: Great post, it's not too long at all and I will digest it better on my return tonight... best regards: Stu

@@glenkepic3208 Just back from Edinburgh - We have the International Festival going on just now so it's a really busy city to try and get in and out off. Anyway... Ahh The old MXR Distortion + oh yes I remember that one well, it was a favourite pedal of mine (it got stolen) and it worked so well with an overdriven Marshall valve head. I don't know what the new versions are like, but I will be doing a review on the 3 overdrive pedals I have (non are MXR). Listening to you play, I can't quite make out what you are using on the TV show. Now DOD Pedals... I remember those... didn't know they were still around. In regard to the delay pedals, I tend to use the little MXR Carbon Copy very sparingly alongside an overdriven tone and it helps to sustain the notes when you want those long drawn out tones. They get a bit messy if you try to play too many notes in quick succession. I also find them easier to use in a recording environment (more control) compared to a live stage environment where timing can get tricky if your not careful. So... I'm off to bed now cause I've got my "Amplifier" book ready and waiting to be read... and looking forward to it.... regards: Stu

@@glenkepic3208 Yes its important not to take for granted those close to us, as the old saying goes... you don't realise what you have until you don't have it anymore. My wife has 3 sisters and when they all get together its funny watching them all loudly talking over each other, and yet they seem to be able to communicate their stories to each other with lots of laughs and tears. Was reading the 'Amp' book and saw an old Marshall I owned and had the same experience as the author. He was talking about the Marshall 'Artist' Combo, that when he got it home he realised it was not what he was looking for and I had the same experience. I was about 14 at the time and bought one brand new (paying it up every week) and while it sounded lovely in my little bedroom, within a rock band environment it was underpowered and lacking overdrive ability even when up full. I managed to do a deal with a friend who had an old Marshall half stack - he took my 'Artist' combo and traded it in for something he wanted while I took his Half stack and just kept paying up the 'Artist' until paid off. The book is a good read and I'll take my time reading it so thanks again for the heads up on that.
