Guitar Build: Part 2 – Preparation, Sanding Sealer, Primer & Vintage Amber Lacquer Using Spray Cans
Custom Build Telecaster Style to Equal Fender’s Custom Shop at an Affordable Price? (PART 2) See Part 1 here - ua-cam.com/video/DK1PVW35pTU/v-deo.html
Over the weeks I have been building my own Custom Shop Telecaster Style Guitar - something that I hope will equal the Fender Custom Shop guitars I have here in the studio - at a much lower cost and produced using fairly basic tools.
In Part 1- I covered planning the build-project and specifically the foundation of the build - The “Body and Neck” - the popular choices available, and the reasons why I made the choices I made.
In Part 2 - Preparation begins for spraying the sanding sealer, primer and base vintage lacquer coats. In this video I cover the method I used to spray the foundational base-coats to both body and neck using spray cans and within a home style environment. Before spraying can commence however, a little bit of attention is needed to amend the body so as to avoid damaging finished paintwork in the final stages of construction.
As a long-time Fender Telecaster / Stratocaster lover and player I certainly respect the work that goes into the Fender Custom Shop Relic guitars yet am fully aware that these instruments are out of reach for many players who would love to own one. While not all have the DIY skills, tools and space to build a guitar, perhaps this series of videos might just inspire some to realise a dream.
While I have access to a fully equipped workshop and have many engineering skills behind me I have sought to put together a high quality instrument, where a good number of parts could be sourced at reasonable prices, using basic tools to create a guitar that’s for keeps…
Subscribe and follow my journey and please don’t hesitate to ask questions… thanks for watching… Enjoy!
In Part 3 - I continue the build process as preparation is made for the colour coat, clear coat, headstock decals and final coats of Vintage Amber Lacquer.

    • @StuGuitarChannel

      Hi weasel6535 - There are many kits out there that are completely finished, where you can get a big choice of ready painted colours and fully loaded and wired plates. Although they do of course come at a price. However, even with kits that are pretty much 'build and play' - they still need to be set-up correctly and despite the better kits giving full instructions on how to do that, this would likely be a daunting task for those... where this is not their strength. I did mention in another video, that with the used guitar market being flooded with gear at present, it is much easier to strike a great bargain. I hope you stick around for the next videos as, while I have sought to use basic tools and DIY skills - it is clearly not something to be done lightly if the reason for doing a custom build is to get a high quality instrument. Regards: Stu

      Hi Pete - Yes, I was quite surprised how big the custom-build guitar market is (from standard stuff to the outlandish) and there are a lot of little sole traders (as well as the larger outfits) who make all kinds of bits and pieces along with distribution of genuine brand name parts. I will be doing a video on the costs and time taken to do this build-project and show how and where alternative choices can be made without compromising on a good quality build. I am going to guess an emerald blue color:) In college, a friend of mine had a self-build guitar. I thought that was cool. I failed woodwork class in high school :) But I like the idea of building my own guitar. Lots of things to think about. I've always loved the idea of a custom paint job on the body. Rosewood fret board sounds like a nice idea. My tele is maple. And I have kind of leaned toward a Strat with a Rosewood fretboard for the next guitar. I never really named my guitars...thought is was strange that BB King did...even as a kid...but a custom job, I do agree probably should get a good name (Maybe something, like, ANJ "A New Journey"). I like word art stuff. You could have fun with some cool word art on the head. Alder roasted...I like the idea of having those color tones show through the paint. Fun. I imagine you are keeping tabs on the amount of time and money given toward the project. I will be curious to see how many hours you put into the guitar. blessings :)

    • @StuGuitarChannel
      @StuGuitarChannel 7 днів тому

      Hi Jasper - Mmm... that's 2 of you leaning towards a blue colour or possibly green... as for customised colours... I use to do custom paint work on motorcycles many moons ago and always loved doing Candy Apple and or Flake Finishes but I only ever did one wild custom job on my Stratocaster - I painted it psychedelic. It was the early 70s what can I say... Yes, the name was a difficult one but all will be revealed... ;-) I will do a final video on the cost of parts and cheaper alternatives that could easily have been used without compromising the overall build. And yes I will detail time involved which is not as much as you might think, because I don't have a lot of time to allocate to this. I am keen to see just how close I can get to the Fender Custom shop guitars and yet at a greatly reduced price, but of course - time is where the real cost is on any hand-built type guitar. Have a great day brother... God bless: Stu

    I would guess vintage blonde, but I suspect you may consider that color impersonal so I'm changing my answer. Now I wanna say cherry red, but that would make it very close to Dan Steinhart's "Red." So in the end I'm going with a blue or green but not a standard shade like sea foam or daphney . . . hmm . . . a medium/dark hue of not too saturated blue, final answer.

    You did a great job on the upgrades! I didn’t know that people sanded these necks. I recently got a guitar that has some sort of gloss on the neck and my squirt debut strat neck feels sanded already compared to that. Maybe it’s something I can try to get a “real” sanded feel!

    • @StuGuitarChannel
      @StuGuitarChannel 8 днів тому

      Hi Mark - Lot of folks a little wary of sanding the neck, particularly on an expensive guitar as it could affect resale and will definitely affect a trade-in with a shop. Buying a custom shop guitar with an authorised relic neck is one thing but doing it yourself will have financial implications for any sale. Just something to consider. Otherwise, as you possibly noticed, with the type of satin varnish on the Squier - when sanded with 400, the 1500 grit - you don't really notice it's been sanded other than it has a slightly duller finish, but it sure feels nicer to play. If you keep up with the custom build project I am doing you will see what I do to that neck to give it a played-in feel, matching my Fender Custom Shop guitars... Regards: Stu

      Hi Jasper - I've worked in Texas, and while I agree... everything is bigger... Blackstar do some nice amps, I was going to try-out their newer stuff until I came across the Marshall SV20H Studio Vintage Plexi 20W Valve Amp Head - Mark II - review here - ( ua-cam.com/video/rXmYNLipKMA/v-deo.html ). Getting a sticker! Always wins for me! Back in the days when I really liked punk rock and hardcore bands - I wanted stickers and pins (small buttons) for everything. Since all the bands I liked were underground, I don’t think my pins will be worth anything in the future. The reverb sounds nice...could get a Dick Dale sound with that pedal. Never played with reverb as a pedal. And truthfully don’t use it too much other than when playing clean blues, and at times with a chorus pedal. I use digital delays a lot. Does the pedal react different if a distortion pedal is placed before or after it? I am thinking, like a Cry Baby, after and before distortion almost two different effects. Thanks for the review 😊

    • @StuGuitarChannel
      @StuGuitarChannel 9 днів тому

      Hi Jasper - Yes it's a nice pedal for no-mess reverb and just gives a bit of a lift to the tone of any instrument. I am careful with reverb and particularly with delay, especially when recording, because as you know, too much cannot be corrected in post. Yes - distortion before and after makes a difference to all my modulation pedals and when I record I put those through the effects loop on my amplifiers (all have effects loop features). If using my pedal-board I keep the modulation / reverb pedals before the distortion / boost pedals (amplifier - modulation / reverb - distortion - guitar). For anyone interested I did a review on this when first setting out a pedal-board seen here - ( ua-cam.com/video/Q1l5T-PaSOs/v-deo.html ). A free sticker... well, that may have just pushed me to get this particular pedal ;-) I had a friend who covered his guitar, amp and guitar case in all kinds of stickers... looked a right mess... but considering what I use to look like and what I did to my gear... GSD's are wonderful dogs, they were actually bred to herd & protect sheep from wolves in the Alps. Also bred to protect the shepherd & children. Because GSD's are so intelligent, abuse can cause a nervous breakdown. My suggestion as a trainer is that the dog owner needs the training & that supports a positive, loving relationship with any dog. Ironically many people make the mistake that small dogs don't need training & it's the small ones that can cause mayhem ! Because GSD's are so popular there are greedy breeders who cause problems like hip dysplasia. Though smart, GSD's are also big sooks & goofballs which is why they are great family dogs. But they need a yard, a spot on or near your bed ! plenty of walks & social interaction & activities which engages their intelligence. And don't feed dogs chocolate or potato ! Real care for any animal is shown if you realise that you don't have the time or housing circumstance to care for them properly & I applaud anyone who puts the comfort & care of any animal above human whim. Hi Derek - Not sure if I picked you up right or perhaps I didn't explain clearly? I did change-out all electronics - pick-ups, along with fully loaded Fender Custom Shop Telecaster control board, the only thing I chose not to change was the input jack and its modern wires. The Texas Specials sounded over-bright as I did not dial them in to where most folks would normally have them - the disparity on the amplifier settings and tone control settings for each guitar was night and day - so as I had already filmed the 'Debut' video I was trying to not mess with settings too much on the Texas pick-ups. In the Custom Build Project (first video uploaded next week) we will get to hear what they sound like in the custom built guitar and dialled-in tones to show them off better... Hi James - Thanks for the question. I am not knowledgeable on the wide range of pick-ups on the market today so hopefully someone else will chip-in. As you will know, Semi's can often have issues with feedback (howl) due to the hollow body design and this can be exasperated by pick-up choice. It does depend on what kind of tone you are looking for. In this Gibson ES 339 it has Classic and Classic+ humbuckers and much depends on what amplifier I play this guitar through as the results can be very different. I do tend to feel the Classic pups are a bit lack lustre and have thought about switching them out for something a bit brighter. Of course much depends on the tone wanted. • @StuGuitarChannel
      @StuGuitarChannel 15 днів тому

      Hi Roger - Thanks for chipping in - No, I had them both at the same volume, I may have slightly altered the Texas Specials just a little because the 'Debut' pick-ups are quite flat and need a bit of edge from the amplifier. The Texas Specials on the other hand are pretty edgy and need to be dialled down to get what I would prefer. Either way I did try not to mess too much just so the difference could be heard. The little Blackstar is a good wee combo which does of course help. If I played the 'Debut' through my Bad Cat Clack Cat - it would sound even better but that combo is nearly 4 times the price... Next week I start the Custom Tele style project using quality parts and materials (still keeping the cost far less than Fender Custom Shop) and once completed I will be able to add that into the side by side comparison... should be an interesting experiment... regards: Stu

      @StuGuitarChannel Yeah, I have built quite a few. The last one I put in fender customs, I believe they are called. Didn't really like them. I have been using cheaper necks but level and crown the frets. It's fun. I usually just sell them at cost. I am not really doing it to make money.

      @@rogerledoux4741 Hi Roger - I'll be interest to see what difference the body and neck I'll be using makes to any tones... arguments about that topic to one side... I have a number of Custom Shop Fenders here from time to time and while tones are nuanced, I find a difference in tonal response depending what type of amp/speaker is used in-conjunction with each other and how each guitar is approached in playing style. So much is of course subjective, anyhow, as you say it's fun seeing it all come together, but it's not something I aim to do again... regards: Stu

      @StuGuitarChannel Other then resale value I don't think custom shop guitars are worth the money.

      @@rogerledoux4741 Hi Roger - Ah, now that’s a topic and of course once again, subjective. From my own point of view I really like my CS Strats and Tele's (all relic models) and I appreciate the length of time it takes to custom build things having designed and built many custom projects from bikes, cars, boats and small aircraft - so when it comes to time spent on a project (whatever it is) as you know, that’s where the costs are. I have a couple of Fender USA models and they are nice but I don’t play them anymore and they will be sold off. I feel a definite difference between something made by machine and something that’s had a lot of hand-work. Again it’s subjective… I have a history with worn-out guitars from years of playing and I suppose that’s another connecting point which is personal. Will they hold their value… time will tell, an important consideration for some but not at the top of the list for myself. I suppose the reason for my next video’s fits in with your question, should folks who want something a bit more special, yet working within a tight budget think about building their own custom guitar that they can really connect with. Thanks for chipping in Roger, it would be great to see some of your work as I have had a few folks share with me picks (privately) of work they do - a lot of talented people out there... Just found you Stu, great review! I picked up a Squire Affinity HH model just before the pandemic. It was on a deal for just over $200 US dollars… I really wanted a Les Paul, but now I’m sold on the sound of the Tele with humbucker pickups and an easy to play neck… Quality has been great since I bought it. I’m just a casual (hack) player, but I love it. I will be watching more of your channel. All the best from the States. 😀

      Hi Danny - Thank you for the kind comments. Yeh, Tele's are great guitars and while I don't have any Fender Tele's with Humbuckers in them I have been considering it in regard to a Custom Build Tele style project I working on just now. Video series to follow. I did upgrade the Debut Telecaster and that video will be uploaded at 5pm (UK time) tonight so that should prove interesting as I do a lot of changes and alterations. Thanks for chipping in and always love to hear other folks stories... greetings from Scotland... regards: Stu

    Okay Folks... For those who were interested, this Friday 23rd I will be uploading the Squier Debut Telecaster Upgrade video. In this, I will show a quick breakdown of the guitar and the parts that will be getting replaced along with carious modifications. I have sought to do this with basic tools and DIY skills and will end up doing a side by side comparison (before and after). You can decide if it was worth doing and something you might be thinking about. Once the guitar is put back to its original 'form' I will be doing a competition to give this away... Regards: Stu
