    I was in school when this came out and bought the album, the following day my mate played it all the way through on an acoustic guitar in the classroom, he could learn any track instantly, great player. He is sadly gone but I did play in a group with him for several years. Great memories, thank you Sped. PS I seen them play this live as well.

    • @SpedSpedding
      @SpedSpedding  2 роки тому +8

      Wow, that’s definitely a skill. I mean, I can now learn a few songs in a day. You get better at that the longer you play, it gets easier.
      Your friend sounds like a special player, sorry that they’re not with us any more.
      Were they pitch perfect or have a photographic memory?
      You will be able to do the same thing as well for sure, keep at it Charles!

    This is the song that taught me hammer on and pull off! And only very recently, I’m an older chap relearning guitar. I heard the song and thought ‘I have to play that!’. I cannot tell you how much time I have put into this song, a lot, but I will definitely never be frightened by hammer on or pull offs ever again, they are now second nature! And I’m quite good at the song now even though I say it myself. Nice video, you do teach very well Sped….

    • @SpedSpedding
      @SpedSpedding  2 роки тому +2

      Exactly, that’s where you want everything to be. Effortless and second nature. What’s cool about this example in particular is that it moves between shapes and little lead lines, a nice mixture of rhythm playing and intricate picking.

  • @aquilarossa5191

    Cool. I learned it quickly, even with the almost old now person early morning brain fog. Now I just have to remember that I know it. Use it , or lose it -- just like learning a language.

      Getting all the new notes in when you’re learning a song is the hardest part. When you’re off sheet you can just practice and have fun. No more double checking.

    Over The Hills was one of the very first songs I learned on my first guitar in 1986. I still play it today. If you listen to the live version there is an extra riff Jimmy throws in the intro that sounds really nice. I'd love to see a video on some of the riffs that don't appear on the studio tracks. Stairway is another good example. Love your videos, Thanks!!!

    • @SpedSpedding
      @SpedSpedding  2 роки тому +3

      Yeah I’ve mentioned this a few times, he’s just doing some major and minor thirds working his way up to the D chord but imagining it as a bar at the seventh fret. And I know the one you mean in Stairway to Heaven as well, they’re very cool, when I did my 5 facts about Stairway I did chuck in the little blues lick that he puts in the Am7 section.

      If you haven't listened to the Zeppelin on BBC recordings you should find a copy. Comes as a 3 disc set and they have some arrangements that they only seemed to do on live shows as well as a couple medley arrangements of their own and other songs that are really great.

    Great lesson Sped .One of the first riffs I learned , had a low end guitar with high stiff action , very hard to play ,killed my fingers ! That guitar became a smasher at my friends show . He was the singer of a metal band that played a lot of Sabbath , AC/DC & Metallica covers . He put together a show with about 60 bands on a weekend from Friday til Sunday night , all kinds of music , rock,metal ,blues,country ,reggae,jazz ,punk etc ,. Good times

    I passed on this beauty playing guitars upstairs at SWAS in Redlands, cause my bestie Richard had already nailed it, as 16 year olds ... but now I'm nearly 60, and it's caught my ear again. So, yes, Sped, you are still turning on folks, even though it's 40+ years later now - but what took my friend probably 2 weeks from ear, barely took about twice the time of the video for me ;-)

      Ah you’re welcome! As always it’s my spin on things. I feel like less is more with the strumming on this one though until it opens up at the end. More about dividing up the bass and treble with the pick. Balance. 🙌🏻

    Not sure I've ever listened to this track, certainly not in 40 years or so, and never so carefully as I just have after watching your lesson. Thanks for throwing it my way.
    I love the intro which is definitely a good work out for the pull-off skills especially if you play it on an acoustic guitar as Jimmy did (I knew that from the sound but couldn't resist checking the book to be confident enough to go public!) One to try out for certain, for which your TAB will be a necessity.

    P.S. Some videos on how he got his tones and how to approximate them with the kind of equipment most players have or can get.
    For example:
    1. That strange flanging phased effect on the guitar in the intro to Nobody's Fault But Mine (zero point flanging?).
    2. That searing cut in the solo of Since I've Been Loving You, plus that live version in the film at the point the NYPD bobby's jaw drops (I always wondered if that cop quit the force and became a hippy after that lol)
    3. That big sounding reverb or delay in the solo of You Shook Me. The solo in Tangerine is similar (delay and reverb pedals do not seem to sound the same to me, plus I figure it is probably added at the mixing desk via a bus).
    4. Wah, fuzz, and Echoplex for the Dazed and Confused intro. Probably the easiest of this list, but running echo into a crunchy amp might seem strange to some folk.
    5. How he makes a fuzz tone cut and not sound all mushy in the low end like they tend to do.
    Cheers.

      I actually have something like this planned, it’s not specific to these songs but more a cinematic sketch followed by some tips on tone I’m general and what I’m using from time to time.
      I love your suggestions here though, maybe this is something else I could take a look at. I’m by no means an expert or a massive gear nut. I just use my ear and get by with what I have.

      The triplet feel on the riffs in between the chords and the way that he kind of pushes into the next bar can be difficult. If you’re tapping your foot I’d do it double time. Not worrying about the syncopation as much, I found it easier that way anyway. Make sure you’re leaving the correct pauses between each part too.
