Thanks, I’m looking forward to carrying the Surge, bit kit, bit extender and a small single AAA light in the Leatherman 4.5” Camo sheath. Just gotta wait on the mail man
I have the same setup and it’s the only setup I think I’ll ever need. I find myself reaching for my leatherman sheath with tools more than my actual home tools lol. I don’t do anything too extreme though. Mainly use my Surge for home and at campsites. Gets the job done for most basic situations.
I just purchased the bit extender and the bit kit. The bits get locked into the extender and cannot be remove without help from a vise. I had to modify all the bits from in bit kit. I used a small jewelers rat tail file to open up the retaining notch to a nice radius. The bits still lock into the bit holder but now I can remove them with my fingers.
I own the Surge, the Wave and the Charge multi-tools and also the made in USA and already discontinue (generation 2) Leatherman Tool Adapter that attaches at the pliers, between the handles. This adapter is so useful because it's like a compact hand tool by itself and I can use bits and extensions out of my tool box that I all ready have, plus I can fold it into a 45 or 90 degree position and achieve the extra torque you need to break a stubborn screw or nut. The new LM flat bits are weak, they strip and break easy because they're made for small jobs plus they only work with the tiny short mount located on the tool handle or with the over-priced driver extender, whereas the adapter works with all of my Leatherman tools and all of my bits and quarter inch drive sockets from Harbor Freight. I really don't know the reason why Leatherman discontinued the all stainless, made in USA Tool Adapter but I think it was because of production co$t plus they weren't making enough profit out of it so they decide to replace it with the "new and improved" made in China bit kit and extender. I know this kit is easy to carry inside the sheath but like I said before, they are also easy to break or strip, and the more you brake, the more you buy, and that's exactly what the guys at Leatherman want.
Small world I have the same trio and few more. At least you have the tool adapter. And I know what you mean about the flat bits, what I found out was that are "Leatherman" knock-offs, same packaging, literature. Difficult to tell the different. "Caveat Emptor" (Buyer Beware). Some of Harbor Freight products are great buys however be wary of the prices (too good to be true) and quality (Made where?) Thank you for your comments too.
I just ordered the wave plus. Both sides have the same sicorrs, flathead, and small screwdriver. There is no bottle opener or larger driver bit. The package (picture) has it on it.
Well done brother! And definitely subscribed because we have the same pinky! I use the scissors on the Leatherman Supertool 300 to trim the weird forming nail. My pinky was left in a squat rack. So cool to see someone with a equally dismembered falange.
Thanks for the thorough review. As I suspected, my spring isn't present on the extender. I haven't come up with an elegant manner to stow the extra 2 sleeves of bits. The case that came with the Charge TTi handles one very well.
I got to be honest I'm not sold on the bit extender for LM. The fact that you can't really use standard 1/4" bits like you would with any other 1/4" bit driver is a little bit annoying. I get they want you to buy the proprietary bits but come on 🙄
You know what? I subscribed to your channel. :) You are a Really handy person. I got curious about your Wave bit driver holder, so I checked your channel -- couldn't find it tho? Are you planning to make the video about it? I want to watch it! Thank you for your comments too!
Hey thanks for becoming a subscriber! Thank you so much for the compliments, unfortunately, I don't have a video of it and I am not sure if i'll make a vid either, but I can send you a picture if you'd like? Let me know friend !
For me it was a huge disappointment to discover that the extender cannot be used properly with standard bits. When the bit sinks it is quite inconvenient to use. Despite the marketing promises of LM! And it is quite simple to adapt the tool for standard and proprietary bits, some users are doing it. My solution was to buy a bit longer bits of 30 mm and they fit perfectly.
Oh I remember I used to use non-standard bits while I was working at a major airline. As long as I know, the bits you are talking about is not popular in the US. Thank you for reminding me!
Or you could use a generic bit adapter that comes with a cheap multitool which comes with bits because with a generic bit adapter, the bits don't sink like they do on the crap Leatherman bit adapter, which is a ripoff anyway!!
All your vids are great. Would like to see you make a come back and introduce some new reviews if you have any other tools or multi tools to do fresh reviews on. Anyway, thx!
i recently got the extender and bit kit for my wave. once a bit is inserted into the extender, it is very difficult to remove. the bit gets stuck in there and just using the wave's pliers is not enough. i had to clamp it in a vise and use a vise grip pliers to pull it out. its ridiculous. leatherman needs to improve on the design of the extender.
You may want to contact Leatherman about your issue. Never had a problem of bits getting stuck. Keep in mind that the standard bits are shorter than Leatherman bits too.
SevereTstormFan check the spring clip is inside your extender. Mine was so tight I couldn't remove the bit without pliers, it loosened up with a drop of machine oil.
There should be a circular ring inside the bit holder, that is the spring clip, which holds the bit in. If the spring tension is correct, it should grip the bit at the notches around the bit itself. However, if the spring clip has lost its tension, it may not grip. Or worse case, the spring clip is missing.
You can order direct from Leatherman either on-line or call them, pricing will be manufacture retail. Try Amazon.com, you'll find pricing better, or a retail outlet that sells Leatherman Multi-tools i.e. Major Hardware outlets (Home Depot), Large Sporting Goods Outlets in your area. Hope this helps
Why would I waste money on Leathermans Proprietary bits when I can take a bit adapter and put it on my Super Tool 300 Phillips since it is a 3D Phillips and it fits the square hole in any bit adapter?? I think the bit extender is a rip off and the bit adapter is crap, when you use normal bit's you have to use your pliers to get them out. They suck big time!! Take my advice, get a bit adapter from a cheap multitool kit and use it with a Super Toll 300, you'll be able to use any bit including ratchet and drill bits, and if you lose bits, you can always get more and won't cost you like the proprietary bits. Even the Phillips on my Gerber MP600 is a 3D Phillips and I can use my generic bit adapter and bits with it as well!!! Don't get ripped off!!! If you have a 3D Phillips, you can use ANY bit adapter with bits, screw Leathermans bit kit garbage crap!!! They just trying to get more money off you as if you didn't spend enough already!!
All boils down to individual preference and personal application. unfortunately I to own a center drive along other gerber products. Along with Leatherman Surge, Wave and few others. What I found Leatherman proprietary bits is "handy" yeah may not be full size, not as durable as full size like apex brand, for a "pocket tool box" you do have bigger selection with less bulk. besides your collection of multi-tools sound somewhat similar to what I have a small investment in multi-tools and I wasn't trying to collect them just kept upgrading is all....
I think the Super Tool 300 is a good tool but I do prefer the Gerber MP600 over all, I have no use for a saw, scissors, and the file, I rarely use. The screwdrivers and knife are all I really use. I also wasted money on a Bit kit long ago and I don't even use it. I do use a generic bit adapter which fits both my Leatherman and my MP600. If you lose a bit from a bit kit, you're screwed and have to buy the whole thing all over again. better off buying a Stanley Bit kit since they're cheap. Like I said, the Bit adapter on the Leatherman Bit Kit is garbage, it swallows short bits so you have to use longer ones. I'm about practicality, not pain in the ass!! Another thing, the bit adapter has no magnet but my generic one does so I never lose any bits. I find Leatherman to be Way over-priced, even their bit extender for the Wave, Surge which is a 5 cent piece of steel they charge almost $30 here in Canada when I can buy a cheap multitool, take the adapter and use it on both Leatherman and Gerber. At least when you buy a cheap adapter it comes with a multitool and bits!!! If people want to get ripped off, be my guest, I'm too smart for their over-priced crap. For the price Leatherman charges for Bit extender, Bit Kit, you could go buy yourself a 45-60 piece bit set!!! Now that t me makes more sense!!!
Thank you for confirming that there are two different adapters!
Thanks, I’m looking forward to carrying the Surge, bit kit, bit extender and a small single AAA light in the Leatherman 4.5” Camo sheath. Just gotta wait on the mail man

phalange lol
Lost my pinky to a pallet jack while assisting some guys off loading one of them asked could " I lend a hand" almost lost two fingers lol...
Fun fact: using the MUT wrench and RBD can make a tourqe wrench for tougher screws.
Use bits by wiha
Thanks for the thorough review. As I suspected, my spring isn't present on the extender. I haven't come up with an elegant manner to stow the extra 2 sleeves of bits. The case that came with the Charge TTi handles one very well.
Good info. I didn't know about the standard bits going in too deep. Thanks. 👍
The pliers will pull bits out of the extension.

Early Wave tools had a single Phillips head screw driver. You can use bit drive
I wonder how old is your Wave tool... Thank you for your comment.
Gadget Survivalist first gen! Still works
Nice review once again buddy, I actually made a 1/4" socket holder that fits in the Wave bit driver holder, pretty neat ;)

Mine gets really stucked, brand new bit extender.

Working on it with the Leatherman Free P4
Gadget Survivalist fantastic. I’ll be lookin out for it. Thx for reply.

I have the same exact issue!!! It took me well over 10 minutes to remove several bits as I tried more than one.
This lack of function with standard tools (hex bits) is bordering on a deal breaker.
Awesome review!
Thank you for the comment
is compatible with super tool 300 eod???
No look at the other extender, he had photo of it at beginning and it’s on Leathermans web site.
Thank you.
Use your leatherman to pull the bits out
since you ahve an MAULTI TOOL
When I push a bit into my extender it falls out when it's upside down. Shouldn't be that way!
SevereTstormFan check the spring clip is inside your extender. Mine was so tight I couldn't remove the bit without pliers, it loosened up with a drop of machine oil.
MrBlueSkies101 thanks
