I have victorinox, SOG, Leatherman and Bilbury multi tools and like them all...The Gerber however is (in my view) very different from everything else. As a sailor I'm often reaching for a multi-tool when I'm holding something in my other hand. The Gerber Centre Drive gives me one-handed access to the three tools I most often use- The pliers, the knife and the screwdriver. That one-handed capacity is what makes it different from all that I own. Increasingly I'm only interested in tools that offer one-handed access to tools without opening the pliers (ie the Leatherman Free P2)

The Surge is on an entirely different level than the Gerber. Gerber could easily compete but they don’t. They don’t care because they hate their customers.

It seems to me you favor Leatherman you're not giving a fair review for both the knives your favorite because you like leather and more be honest about both the tools and one thing I know Leatherman tools multi-tools are way overpriced for what you're getting the Gerber suspension NXT comes with everything the Leatherman waves got it is 30 bucks and it uses the same steel Anna spring assisted for the pliers you do not give fair reviews. Give Gerber its props they did a good job on this multi-tool and I feel you don't like it

And another thing you don't mention the bits come with the Gerber the bits don't come with the Leatherman you have to buy them

I don't like how you dog the Gerber because you like Leatherman better they both make a good multi-tool

Just so you know the Gerber center-drive blade is the same steal the Leatherman uses with the wave

Very helpful review, my friend! I've been saving up to get a Leatherman Surge, but I think I will pick up the Center-Drive instead. I find myself needing a bitdriver almost daily, and I like the layout of the one on the Center-Drive a bit better, as well as the interchangeability with standard 1/4 bits.

Tried one on an outlet cover used some torque and it bent I'm not gonna use this bit kit to me it's garbage

As another person also asked - your Surge Sheath/Pouch - What Brand, name, size, or type? I ask as many are not able to carry the bit kit w/ the surge and if they do then they are not in separate pockets and this makes it a pain to use the surge on a regular basis.

I just ordered the wave plus. Both sides have the same sicorrs, flathead, and small screwdriver. There is no bottle opener or larger driver bit. The package (picture) has it on it.

This lack of function with standard tools (hex bits) is bordering on a deal breaker.

Bit driver for standard hex bits is a standard function I think every multitool should have; unless it's a survival/bushmans version. The Leatherman are great, but the fact that their bits are proprietary makes it less of a multitool, and more of a specialized one. There are so many multitools, but I which I could just put my own together.

Secondly, the 6mm hex/allen bit by Leatherman is different in shape (more rectangular than hexagonal) from the actual 6mm hex/allen key on your other multi-tool? So, I'm wondering if the Leatherman bit is able to get the job done with actual hex/allen screws?

In practice you had better have a flashlight to read the marks on the bits! I can't hardly read the designations on my set. They say these bits work with other brand tools, but I forget which... I think maybe the Walmart fake Wave...? Whatever it's called... They have to have an internal mechanism to hold the bit on the groove on the middle of the bit. Leatherman tools cost too much, and I spend all kinds of time trying to get myself to pay the extra BUCK$... Still trying to get myself to buy a Surge... OZARK TRAIL!!! I think somebody said the Wallyworld OZARK TRAIL fake Wave multi-tools can use these 2D bits... IMHO

Hahaha . I have the letherman surge end I am so happy . The letherman surge it is for hard work end EDC survival tool.

I really don't understand why someone would want the center drive. Catching myself one handed 90% of the time I need my mutlitool, would just piss me off having to open the Gerber, unfold it, get the tool I need, and then repeat the process backwards. Granted, you still have to open the surge for some tools, but your most commonly used items are readily available

I must be the only person that uses the screwdriver on the surge with it half opened like a L shape. Way more.torque and it fits small places like.that too

Gerber center drive is the strongest multitool I have. Much more stronger and robust than my leatherman surge and my victorinox spirit.(I broke 3 times surge and is almost impossible to brake Centerdrive. The steel is harder and better heat treatment) Except for the shamefully carbide cutters, CD is the best multitool for working environment. Not so good as edc or camping outdoors.(no wood saw, no scissors) But it Have fews tools and very goods.

Excellent review. Very detailed the way I would like it. It helped cement my decision when replacing my lost 20 yr. old M-T. This review with a couple others like the one showing the SOG near equivalent and it’s spring wearing out and thus not holding the knife or saw back in place is a BIG no-no /issue for SOG. So now I’ve just purchased a Surge. Even though it’s heavier or bulkier or more manual to operate than others, for the long term, it is a solid product through and through and could well last me my lifetime; my intention. And when Gerber makes it difficult to understand what is its M.O.C., that’s even more reason to trust a brand like Leatherman. Thank you again 🏆

I tried putting the waves bit holder into the center line after you just got through saying it was proprietary to the Leatherman Wave? Sorry your biased towards the wave is clearly a thing. Want to try putting the center lines bit in the Leatherman Wave?

I just purchased the bit extender and the bit kit. The bits get locked into the extender and cannot be remove without help from a vise. I had to modify all the bits from in bit kit. I used a small jewelers rat tail file to open up the retaining notch to a nice radius. The bits still lock into the bit holder but now I can remove them with my fingers.

Put your thumb across the serrated blade. I bet you couldn't cut yourself. Wave all the way
