- Protests had been bubbling for months but kicked into a higher gear after more than 100 pro-Palestinian demonstrators who had camped out at Columbia were arrested Thursday.

It pulls the Overton window in ways that some mainstream coverage and Biden administration talking points do not.
The disruption it causes also makes for political pressure. American politicians just want Gaza to be minimized and not talked about. But when there are widespread protests in the one side , state department resignations, Aaron Bushnell's self immolation, more and more reporters are going to push back and ask questions.
It also raises general awareness, makes the news. A lot of people are completely unaware that anything is happening that they should care about, but this sort of protest gets talked about.
