The Abyss was an absolutely stunning achievement for its time, and its presentation in 4k UHD is nothing short of spectacular

Right there with you, preordered as well on Scamazon,was hoping to get it on release,now it says the beginning to mid April.
was given till June 3rd in an email , site said mid April but until lands on the mat
I cancelled my Amazon order when it got pushed back to the end of March and ordered from Walmart instead, which delivered my order yesterday.
Mine areived today and i cant wait to watch it later! Michael Biehn is amazing in this classic!
Unfortunately in Germany we have to wait until April 26th. I'm as excited as a toddler waiting for Santa Claus.
In the UK it still isn't released on BR so I bought an import. This is due to the scene with the rat submerged into oxygenated fluid which was previously trimmed in British cinemas. It's stupid to be oversensitive and restrict the release of the whole film. No harm came to the animal (several were used) and it is obviously not alive now! 🐀
I agree with you. Because of a few offended animal rights activists you guys can't own a movie.
Yeah, I completely agree that it is totally ridiculous to outright CENSOR the film for EVERYONE. If you don't like what they did with the animals and it makes you uncomfortable, you are always free to not watch the movie if it really bothers you (Which is totally fine and understandable, I know I have had movies that I decided not to watch because the content seemed like it would be unappealing and too uncomfortable for me)

Delighted this movie is finally on 4k, one of my all time favourites. Such a pity its not out in the UK and also generally the prices on these 4k discs seems to be going up not down. 4k movie enthusiasts are being treated as niche buyers or collectors, and i think the studios would be surprised how many people they could convert to physical media if they just had a lower price point!
Going to check this one out and True Lies from the library first but am pretty sure I will be picking these up. Thanks.
Your reviews are spot on 👍 .. I was very disappointed with True Lies Blu Ray (I left a comment on your True Lies review too). The Abyss Special Edition was a complete 180 in terms of effort to the restoration done. It's clear that Cameron put the most "labor of love" effort overall into The Abyss restoration because it looks phenomenal.. would agree it's Solid A Grade Overall .. love this movie 🎥 👍 ☺️
Stubled upon it in the supermarket last night. Paid 25,50€ (it was on sale).
There were two copies on the shelf. About one minute after I snagged mine, another guy my age grabbed the other one. Nerds shopping movies at 10 pm on a sunday night, lol 😅
Just watched this and I have to say it looks amazing in 4k well worth the price! I haven't seen this movie since the 90s so it was pretty much like watching it the first time.
Got mine today here in the UK and I paid over the odds for it but I don't care its always been a movie I had to own!
Had a copy on VHS, then a widescreen VHS, the DVD...and then...nothing for almost 20 years... so - yeah about time ! My copy is en route as I type this. Has to be in my top 10 films of all time.
Been waiting for my copy. A lot if whining out there in other reviews/comments complaining about lack of grain and processing. I havent seen the film yet, but was pretty sure itd be great regardless of the outside noise of others. Honestly, Im just happy this got an upgrade from the very mid, special edition dvd. Thx for the balanced review.
I'm a little disappointed that i won't hear "Abyss Watch 4K" anymore 😅.
I just saw it this weekend and thought the new 4K is outstanding!!! That Atmos mix sounded incredible. It's a 1989 movie, but wow that Atmos sounded like a modern sound mix. One of the best I've heard from that era.
I just don't understand the hate I see online for this new 4K. What a VAST improvement over the outdated DVD. Great review, Adam! Thank you!

Thank you Adam! Glad to hear your review. There was a lot of rumblings on this and the other Cameron releases. I’m gonna get it now. I saw it in the theaters when it was released but maybe only seen it once or twice since, so really looking forward to it.
The same is true for me. And, I've never seen the Extended Edition. Are there any fish in that version? 🤣 With your review, and the fact that I praise James Cameron for how Aliens came out, I'm going to have to pick this up.
Yes! So stoked to see your review Adam. I feel like it was pretty spot on. The surround track was awesome. This will definitely be one of the first I pop in when I have atmos set up. It has the tightest aspect ratio of the three films and in my opinion is the best of the three.

It's one of my all-time favourite Cameron movies,I've owned it on,THX Laserdisc,THX VHS video tape, and DVD,it's been a Surround sound Demo movie on all formats throughout the years,l remember the rat scene not being edited out in the UK on the early 90's Laserdisc ....but now the BBFC are doing it again....jeezo I know the world is fubar 😢but a rat who I believe actually breathed/swallowed this emulsion in the glass binnacle and survived ,my copy arrives this week ❤❤❤

Watched this a couple nights ago and i was apprehensive but damn, it looked amazing.
Great review! I hope I'm not going to sound like a newbie, but I don't understand when you do your reviews and say which processor (HDR10 or Dolby Vision) you are using for it. My Yamaha receiver processes both, as does my Sony 4k player. I've searched for something that allows for that choice per film/disc but I assumed that the receiver would choose whichever was appropriate based upon the disc settings.
To enjoy Dolby vision you must have a TV that is equipped with DV and also your video disc player needs to have DV capability.

Do you have any thoughts about the use of AI/AI upscaling/whatever else they used in these three 4K transfers?
Whatever technique was used on _The Abyss,_ the results are fantastic.
Definitely getting it whenever amazon gets more. I ordered back in February and still didnt get it on time
I’m in the UK so had to import as it is banned here.The transfer to me is superb and I loved watching the full version.
This one isn't as bad as true lies and aliens DNR wise bases on the 4k streams I watched
In the screenshots the "fringing" on all edges is very noticeable. It makes the image appear harsh. Sometimes old DVDs had this edge enhancement. Perhaps in motion it is OK.
Its really not OK in motion either. I'm surprised some reviewers don't mention it as it really stands out.

Artists usually make art to please themselves, not others.

I’m very surprised this didn’t get a steelbook edition, along with Aliens and True Lies. I can’t wait to see The Terminator and T2: Judgment Day on 4k. Hopefully, James Cameron fixed the quality of T2.
Unless the print is so small I can’t see it, nowhere on the case does it say Dolby vision.
Does the disc itself have the words printed on it?
So far any movie I have with DV always says it somewhere. Have I missed something?
It’s on the back of the case, look for Dolby. It lists as Vision Atmos.

How do you watch a movie that has Dolby vision ? Do you need a special 4k player?
You need Panasonic 820 player
You’d have to have a 4K tv that’ll support Dolby Vision, just any one, and then just any 4K Blu Ray player with the support for Dolby Vision as well.

Thanks Adam. Got mine yesterday. I understand that many are upset about the revisionism but revisionism and all I think the movie looks incredible in 4k HDR. It blows the old DVD out of the water and there is no other way that I would watch this film.
Just watched Aliens last night and was impressed with the transfer. Hoping this one was just as good.
Aliens looked incredible.
The extended cut is the actual story in the book, the theatrical release was a huge disappointment chopped for no reason. I can’t wait to get my brothers in US to obtain this for me as UK release stopped by the maniacs running our country!
I can’t wait to own this release as is one of my favourite films.

Great review, your not kidding about the scene near the end with bud on the alien ship,….the white diver suit is PRESTINE & CRISP in that scene, I had to pause the film to admire what I’m seeing here,….actually I paused alot of times during this film, I’m so happy to finally get this in 4K, I’m not a big fan of FILM GRAIN & this transfer (watching it on Samsung 85inch in HDR10+ Dynamic Mode) & it’s buttery smooth, dam near as clear as his Titanic & Avatar 4K’s….Cameron is a genius….Thx’s for great video/review…I gave picture a A+
Of the controversy surrounding the three releases, this one actually looks the best. Albeit, with zero film grain. I think Cameron got used to the perfection of digital and wanted to reverse-engineer all three films this well. Didn't work so well with Aliens and True Lies. But in spite of this not being a proper transfer, and something of a Frankenstein's DNR Monster, it still looks amazing.
Bluray dnr can be rage inducing? Man, people need to relax and get some fresh air..
Seems to me like a “safe” release by Disney with all three of these Cameron classics. They deserved better; Steelbook or special edition like the recent Avatar films. With any luck Sony will look to address this.
This, Aliens and True Lies all look terrible, Did you not see all the haloing, really weird motion blur, over-sharpening, all the AI artifacts? There are some scenes where the digital processing has made a complete pigs ear of the transfer. The DV isn't DV, it is static metadata and SDR in DV/HDR containers, people have analysed the content and found it is not actually DV, not even HDR. If people vote with their wallets for these lazy trash transfers Disney especially will just chuck out these lazy cash grabs and film preservation will die a death.
Compared to the care and effort companies such as Sony take with impeccably restoring from the source negatives, all this is is the cheapest option and it shows. Some people seem to like the revisionism which has turned the films into what look more like videogames in places, but it is really not for me, I think it looks like uncanny valley and watching the films I just couldn't unsee all the digital processing defects. I hope this doesn't turn into a trend or it will be the death of physical media, you may as well just get the streaming version if you don't care for image quality.

Who was able to get ahold of a copy? Thanks to living in Australia 🇦🇺 yay for me! NOT! It was meant for release here but got pulled at the last minute. Same as Alien, Aliens & True Lies. I can always order online but am looking at around at least $50 upwards just for shipping costs & the cheapest actual physical copy I’ve found sits at around $80-$90. As much as I want them I’m not about to take out a mortgage on my home to be able to afford them. Can anyone tell me why film studios do that? Stop certain films being released in certain countries? It’s really annoying. I’ve always been a movie buff and have been collecting since the age of around 8 years old. So back in the VHS days & then ofc upgraded to dvd to BD & then 4K UHD. Now my ever growing film library has come to a screeching halt. May sound funny but it’s not. It actually really P’s me right off. Maybe someone can give ideas as to how I might be able to get movies sent to Australia from the USA. I have tried from Walmart and the like when they have their sales but they don’t ship to Australia. So boo to that idea. Someone once told me that you can go through something like a re-shipping service or open a PO Box or something like that. I wish I’d paid more attention when they told me it back then it wasn’t that much of an issue cause most stuff was still being released worldwide. Not the case no more. Great visual, atmos is reference, all speakers are use including height speakers!, lfe also. Like better director cut.

Havent seen this since the cinema release 35 years ago. I dont remember much about it, other than it was OK. And yeah, I dont like the rat scene.
Now Aliens in 4k I'm REALLY looking forward to.
A- is fair. I think it's just about as good as it could be considering its age. I do not think this should be a polarizing transfer. True Lies? Hell yeah...that one is, even if it is still ultimately the best way to watch it at home. So much waxy skin...it just looks DNRed to hell.
I don't think this, or the other two cameron releases, were native 4K. From what I've read, they were lazy upscales of older scans and not one was given entirely new attention. That is just the beginning of why these are NOT worthy of a spot in our collections.
The whole release date, availability, etc., just seems very sketchy right now. I don’t trust any of it.
All white cast Is something you will never see today.
