Building a Raised Garden Bed with Corrugated Steel

  • We show you how to build a raised garden bed with corrugated steel sides. This design drains neatly past the wood, so you don't need any landscape fabric. We also built it atop a bed of pavers to keep the pressure-treated lumber from directly contacting the ground.
This bed should last for more than 10 years.

You said so right! This are exactly the words I wanted to expressed too. I was thinking of using basement U tracks of 3.5 " , like a 2 x4 size, stacking 3 pieces I would get a 10" height. Once I saw this, I can ditch the U Tracks and the use of bricks as the spacer is a very clever means to stop rotting and silent the weeds at the perimeter. How nice we only need to think of the keywords to search for answers.

Excellent video and set of plans. I have scoured UA-cam for the best and easiest idea and this was it. Spent 10 hours yesterday building 4 sets of these (3' x 8' and 4' x 8'). They are came out amazing. Approx price for all 4 was $450.

The bottom foot of the bed, you can bury sticks and logs to save on dirt and it adds longterm compost. Most plants dont have root systems that deep anyways.

GhostCreek straw bails make good filler then go to the city & get compost for Chep by the yard for the rest then top off with good soil! In a year the whole thing will be good soil !

Built one! Turned out great! The only changes I made was to make the vertical supports taller so there wasn't wasted wood and I added a center support on the long edges so that the metal wouldn't bow out there. I also added some 45 degree supports along the underside of the top "seat" for a little added stability. Thanks so much for the plans and vid!

These beds look great. I like the idea of using the pavers under the base. I'm doubtful that the bed will last 10 years. The corrugated galvanized panels are 0.014 inches thick, so that galvanized layer is extremely thin. It might work well for roofs where water runs off and then quickly dries, but when continuously exposed to damp soil, usually containing some form of fertilizer, the life of those panels will likely be far less than 10 years. I'm sure they will last a few, not sure they'll do well beyond that. I'd like to hear from someone who has had such bed for many years to hear about how well they have held up.

thanks for this video, I like how the galvanised steel is not only used as a way to contain the soil but also prevents the soil from coming into contact with the pressure treated timber. One other thing I could suggest that might help is to add in some corner galvanised capping/angle to use in the corners for the full height of the box so it would help prevent any loose soil from slipping in behind the sheeting and may even give it a bit more reinforcement. Just an idea, but love this video, thanks again!

the bottom wood will still rot at a faster rate than the top. It's more a wood-framed raised bed with steel walls than steel raised bed. Could you have stuck the steel into the ground itself at all with no wood bottom edge?

@@Protoolreviews I think would keep the top part of the boxes and use the ground itself as the bottom frame creating stability the steel needs. The ground would serve as the wooden bottom, and too would be the same.

How much did all the materials cost per bed? Or for both beds? Looks pretty spendy.
