I like the look of the taller beds as you get more of the tin showing, and they look really good in Jim's backyard. Nice cameo from the chickens, and great action shot of the falling wood.
Thanks Jess! believe it or not the falling wood shot took the longest as I practiced throwing it so it would have less of a chance to break the camera...lol!
Great Job...I basically copied your design to create my 4’ x 4’ Raised Garden... Thanks for the Inspiration. A friend asked me to create a video so it’s posting shortly. Thanks for your great videos
Joe, your videos are great. You should do a video about how you make your videos (camera, equipment, editing, etc). You've inspired me to start filming some of my projects, and would love to hear more about how you started and what steps you took to improve. Thanks so much.
Thanks so much Corey! Just watched the shotgun primer bow shot...very cool! I may do a video on the equipment but so far I'm pretty basic and don't really use anything too fancy. I just got a shotgun mic for the last couple videos... but before that it was just the onboard camer mic and then just editing through imovie. Anyways, I just subbed you and will check out your vids:) joe
We want to build a few of these and have found them rather pricey, Watching you build these made my husband and I say, we can do this. We are going to give it a try. By the way, loved your friends backyard. I got all excited seeing the chickens.
Thanks so much! Yes, they do sell well on craigslist... in my article on Backwoods Home (see link in description) I speak of selling them on craigslist as a way a person could earn some money;) Joe
Joe, a fantastic video (as always). Even if 99% of your audience never make the raised beds, your enthusiasm and passion shine through. Can you give us an update on what is growing in the greenhouse ?. Kindest Regards from across the Atlantic.
Thanks Tony! Yes, the greenhouse have venting now but nothing growing... I don't plan on growing anything really until the fall... but yes, the next part should be soon, I have a solar fan installed and a wind diverter at the window and the ground around the GH a little more graded. I'm debating weather to add in the rain catchment for the next part... or wait... as it will require some more digging and I'm not excited about doing more digging...lol! Joe
DAMN!! wish I would have seen this early spring before I made planters out of 2x12's. These are much more decorative, and clean looking set up. Nice job!
Thanks Jackson! Much appreciated... but 2x12's also make for nice looking beds too! I'm sure yours look great. Maybe these could be like an accent around the house or in a more show-case area of the garden:) Joe
Thanks Mackey! That's about 71 degrees in F... and that sounds about perfect to me! Hope it lasts for you! Tucson and Phoenix hit 109 and 114 two days ago (42.7 and 45.5 C)...whew... hot! My house is a bit cooler than them but we still were well over 100 (37.7 C). Should be a bit nicer in the coming weeks though... I hope;) Joe
Hi Jan! These will look just as good when using pine or other woods as well:) If you check out some of my garden vids you'll see that I made my own raised beds with pine and not redwood... my friend Jim just preferred redwood on these. And you could even use pallet wood and I think it would look really good too :) Anyways, thanks for watching! Joe
Ohh i been watching your videos for a while now. I always find them intresting. I see that its possible to make them very nice in other three sorts. But here in Norway we dont have soo many diffrent sorts of wood, and sometime it would be fun to make something else. Look forward to watch your videos in the future also. Have a nice week. Best regards Jan :)
Awesome! just wanted to say THANKS! Your videos are extremely helpful and inspiring... I have only built a few beds thus using the corrugated metal (w/ 2x4s)... still waiting to catch some redwood in the bargain bucket! LOL! Thanks again!
Thanks for checking it out! btw... I'm going to have to pick your's and brads brain for this THN broadcast stuff. I work a weird shift schedule so that's why I haven't been able to start the Sunday broadcasts yet. Been on the last few Sundays, but should have several open after the 12th. Anyways, gonna go check out your last one now:) joe
Probably the simplest approach to raised beds that I have seen, thank you! Have you had any problems with the beds buckling out at the corners over time with just the flashing as corner supports? - e.g. if people sit or stand on the top caps of the beds. The flashing I've seen doesn't seem as sturdy as what you've got.
LOL if that is what you want to call rust. But at last I had to sell it as I can barely walk the 50 foot from my door to the car. It was fun while it lasted and I used it mostly as a work truck for almost 20 years.
I'm wanting to make these and something similar to these for my grandmother that would hold one or two of the standard garbage company roll off totes if you need any ideas! Thanks for this and all of your other really cool and informative videos.
Hi Joe! Just recently subbed and have been watching so many of your videos. LOVE the new shop! Looks fantastic, but is a bit above our heads to accomplish. However, these raised beds are FABULOUS! Just love them!! Can you give me an idea of what each one cost to build? I'd just like an idea before I head out to buy materials. I think I can do this myself! (fingers crossed! lol) Thanks so much for your content and sharing so much with us. After the planters, we plan on giving the fire pit design a try. That is simply AWESOME! Peace! ~Lisa
I like that idea Lance! Glass or Fence boards would both look great.. if you did a hinged top you could even store something like a propane tank or something like that... hmm , now you got me thinking;) Joe
If you took a router to the inside of the top boards and cut down a 1/4'' you could then put the glass inset in the wood. Maybe even screw a piece of that tin to the underside of the top boards
These are perfect and super easy! Thank you for sharing!! Going to do two of these on my deck ❤️ Question, though... How did you do/what did you use for the bottom of the planters?
Hi LG, I originally built some for a lady and she requested them to be 2ft in height. I was a little hesitant at first because I thought the same thing. So I figured we'd give it a go and make sure to only fill with compost and no 'regular' dirt for just that reason. In the end they will only generally be filled to about 18-20" or there abouts. Thanks for watching! Joe
Hi Liberty, I made my vege garden with corrugated iron, it's enormous 4700mm length and 900mm height. I fill the dirt half way (about half a meter starting at ground level) and have had no issues at all. I've had it now for a year and there's no bulging or any deformities to the original shape.
could you make a garden bed on top of your rock holder we have lots of rocks around our place and thinking about doing a garden on top of the rock bed that you show making. You do great videos, thanks for showing them to us.Also the raised beds save on your back when it is time to weed the gardens you do not have to bend down to the ground to get the weeds out. Thanks again the videos are great will continue to watch became a subscriber today.
These are awesome, and you made it look so easy that I plan to make three of them in the same size you made (2x2x4)! I'm a complete amateur, but I think I can make these myself if I have my hardware store make all the cuts for me, and then assemble them at home. Can you provide more details on the size and type of nails and screws you used for this job, so I'll know what to get? Also, did you pre-drill any holes, either on the flashing, corrugated metal or wood pieces? Thanks!
Hi YFZ, I'm not sure. They've worked well for me, but it certainly might not be the best solution for all weather environments. But I do love the look! :) Joe
Wow, nice. I found your videos by accident. I like how you are self-reliant to do all this yourself, what a inspiration. You have so many ideas, I have to subscribe to your channel dude. LOVING IT!!! wondering if a person could put a bottom on these and somehow seal the inside so as to hold moisture a bit longer...throw some gravel in first for drainage of course....wonder if that would help conserve water usage?
Hi Amber... you certainly could but something that I've found that works is to add some plastic bags(compost/manure bags) or an old tarp in the bottom. It won't seal completely but will help to keep some of the moisture in:) ps-sorry for the super slow response:) I always appreciate seeing your comments and hope your homesteading adventure in N AZ is going well:) Joe
They look awesome. question....how strong are the 3 x 3 flashing? they won't bent with the weight? Thank you. Old video but just saw it. New sub here. :)
Very nice planter > how i made my raise beds > Old barn roofing tin, and a few tee post held togather by bailing wire he hee it works There 9 yrs old and still making gardens he hee to help the looks> i did paint em white and to reflect the sun rays ~ there 3 'W x 10' L x 4' H took 4 tee post on each long side Price was stuff just laying around ZERO $
I built these at my house. One word or caution I didnt see included is that depending on the size you make these you may need to add vertical or horizontal supports on the sides. Our tin siding is bulging out several inches all around due to the weight and pressure of the soil. I had to retroactively add supports on the outside which make this not look as good.
Thanks MHHDH! I think you'll like em'! And much easier to build than they look... my buddy actually saw pics of them and thought it was some crazy complex joinery, until I showed the video.. then he saw how basic the cuts and assembly was. thanks for watching! Joe
Best raised bed video yet. Great job.
Nice and easy!
Love your workbench.
You made it plain and simple. The way I learn best. Right to the point. Thanks.
Nice video, I like that you keep it simple! I have subscribed and saved this video.
Wow, beautiful planters! Thank you!
I like the look of the taller beds as you get more of the tin showing, and they look really good in Jim's backyard. Nice cameo from the chickens, and great action shot of the falling wood.

Looks super classy and will last a long time without leaching anything unwanted into the beds! Awesome thank you!
These are very sweet. You just settled a protracted debate. Thank you. Well done.
Nice video Joe, you are a true craftsman!
Much appreciated Mark!
Joe
Awesome video.... my summer project... hopefully!
Really good build Joe. Simple and durable. love the way the sun reflects in the tin.
Thanks Andy! I love the way the metal and the wood contrast too... kind of a modern/rustic kinda thing:)
Joe
These are really nice. I have tin left over from another project so will be put to good use after seeing this video. Thanks.
We want to build a few of these and have found them rather pricey, Watching you build these made my husband and I say, we can do this. We are going to give it a try. By the way, loved your friends backyard. I got all excited seeing the chickens.
Finally a great tutorial from a man who knows what he’s doing! Thank you, now I can make my garden beds🌈
very nice and great idea
This is a great project! Something that would sell well on CL or farmers markets. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much! Yes, they do sell well on craigslist... in my article on Backwoods Home (see link in description) I speak of selling them on craigslist as a way a person could earn some money;)
Joe
Those planters are beautiful!
Wow you are the man!! Beautiful planters!
Thanks so much Ana!
Joe
homesteadonomics great and nice job. Congratulations
Very nice. I can think of some easy idea to install a base as well. Thank you.
Do you possibly have a tutorial on how you made your work table? I love it!
Very, very nice! Attractive and useful. Thanks for sharing another great video. Giving me some good ideas! :)
Thanks Mom! I could easily make a bunch with your availabe metal;)
To make it really sturdy, I would swop the corner flashings for angle iron painted with Rustoleum.
I was wondering if the flashing would really be strong enough once filled with soil...
Gorgeous.
WOW! very stunning planters. Thank you for the video, we will be building them for Canada Day. Thx!
Great planters - I like the look of these.
Thanks so much Tommy!
Joe
Anytime my friend
Very nice,I really looks good.
Really nice planter boxes Joe. Your hens are becoming movie stars.
Thanks Ted... they are getting very photogenic letting me get in for the closeups;)

Awesome project! So simple, but beautiful! Great build!
Thanks Michael! Simple is my favorite way to build...lol... well, sometimes at least..lol! thanks for watching:)
Joe
Look very nice. Wish we had redwood here, but still thats not a problem to make this. Just like the color. Have a nice week

Thanks Janice... glad you liked them:) They are pretty straightforward to build and I think you'll love em!

Outstanding job as always God bless buddy
Thanks as always CM!

Joe
homesteadonomics ur wlcome joe! Us joes stick together..haha!😆

I wondered the same. Flashing is usually pretty flimsy.
I wound up building some of these and they're solid and holding up great after 11 months or so.
Hey man, thank you so much for this video. It's very inspirational!
As always a great looking and fun project. I believe you the fire pit is about the time I subbed your channel.
Thanks Chevy! That's sounds about right... always love hearing from you and seeing your classic truck pic in the comments too! She's a beauty!
Joe
Wish it was mine, it's a 51 and looks way better than my 62 Chevy.
haha....but I'm sure you're 62 chevy has got a lot more character than my 2000 vw tdi;)
LOL if that is what you want to call rust. But at last I had to sell it as I can barely walk the 50 foot from my door to the car. It was fun while it lasted and I used it mostly as a work truck for almost 20 years.

Great job.
Thanks Robert!
Joe
Sweet project!
Thanks Doc!
Joe
inspiration for patio end tables! glass top maybe, or maybe more fence boards.
I like that idea Lance! Glass or Fence boards would both look great.. if you did a hinged top you could even store something like a propane tank or something like that... hmm , now you got me thinking;)
Joe
+homesteadonomics if you make one let us know! I think it would look very nice!

Such a great idea ! They look beautiful ! Also love the chicken close ups! Lol one day I'll own some myself too!!!
Thanks TCU! yes, get chickens when you can... they're fun littel creatures and very easy to take care of too!
Joe
Very nice.
AWESOME! Pretty cool. 💙🐝💙
Looks great! Where did you get your 2 x 3 redwood? I've called a few local lumber yards, menards, home depot, and lowes with no luck!
get 2x6 cut in half
hey those are really nice! great video to!
great design!
Thanks VWW!
just added this project to hubby's To Do list ;)
Awesome! Can't wait to see how it turns out:) btw... sorry for the slow response... been out of town:)
Joe
These are perfect and super easy! Thank you for sharing!! Going to do two of these on my deck ❤️ Question, though... How did you do/what did you use for the bottom of the planters?
Nice looking planters. Did you put bottoms in that weren’t shown in video?
great as everytime!!!!!
Thanks so much Tradstone!
Nice video, nice beds, and nice backyard of your friend's house.
Once question, won't the soil pressure make the corrugated metal walls bulge?
Hi LG,
I originally built some for a lady and she requested them to be 2ft in height. I was a little hesitant at first because I thought the same thing. So I figured we'd give it a go and make sure to only fill with compost and no 'regular' dirt for just that reason. So far so good with hers... but I do think that about 2ft is the absolute max you could go with this thickness of metal before you start getting into problems. In the end they will only generally be filled to about 18-20" or there abouts.
Thanks for watching!
Joe
Thank you.
Hi Liberty, I made my vege garden with corrugated iron, it's enormous 4700mm length and 900mm height. I fill the dirt half way (about half a meter starting at ground level) and have had no issues at all. I've had it now for a year and there's no bulging or any deformities to the original shape.
any thoughts on making it easy to add a little hoop house card set up to each of these planters?
maybe drill some holes for the PVC arches in advance?
Love following your videos. Not really on topic but... what make/model is your wrist watch? I have a watch problem. Haha
could you make a garden bed on top of your rock holder we have lots of rocks around our place and thinking about doing a garden on top of the rock bed that you show making. You do great videos, thanks for showing them to us.Also the raised beds save on your back when it is time to weed the gardens you do not have to bend down to the ground to get the weeds out. I'm seeing a lot of metal planter being used. I wonder if the weather wise in some area may be bad to used. It's pretty cool to see.
Hi YFZ, I'm not sure. They've worked well for me, but it certainly might not be the best solution for all weather environments. But I do love the look! :)
Joe
Very nice
Thanks HD!
Just found your channel ....diggin it!
Very nice looking.
Thanks WV!
Wow, nice. I found your videos by accident. I like how you are self-reliant to do all this yourself, what a inspiration. You have so many ideas, I have to subscribe to your channel dude.
If you have a chance, I would like to know what kind of blade did you use to cut the corrugate metal sheet and what did you put on the bottom to prevent the soil from escaping out from the bottom.
Hey David - i just built these. following the video. I put a simple weed barrier in the bottom to prevent soil leak. And you can cut the metal with tin snips or a grinder with a blade that can cut metal
Any updates on how these planter boxes have aged? I'm worried about rust and degradation of the roofing material from the soil and moisture contact.
nice clean work i like
Thanks Kandalfus!
Joe
Awesome Video, Don't mind I ask off subject. What kind of camera you're using to make this video? My friend and I has been talking about to create a video for the deaf in full sign language. But we have been trouble to find the right camera for that.
It won't seal completely but will help to keep some of the moisture in:)

+homesteadonomics thanks! I like the tarp idea!! we head out this Oct. can't wait to get started
They look awesome. question....how strong are the 3 x 3 flashing? they won't bent with the weight? Thank you. Old video but just saw it. New sub here. :)
i had the same question
Very nice planter > how i made my raise beds > Old barn roofing tin, and a few tee post held togather by bailing wire he hee it works There 9 yrs old and still making gardens he hee to help the looks> i did paint em white and to reflect the sun rays ~ there 3 'W x 10' L x 4' H took 4 tee post on each long side Price was stuff just laying around ZERO $

I need to build something like this but.... 4'Wx8'Lx2'H for vegetable raised beds
very nice
Thansk!
Very cool, the wife and I were just talking about making some of these. Thanks for the info.
Thanks MHHDH! I think you'll like em'! And much easier to build than they look... my buddy actually saw pics of them and thought it was some crazy complex joinery, until I showed the video.. then he saw how basic the cuts and assembly was. thanks for watching!
