- Опубліковано 13 жов 2024
- In this video, I build a 4'x8' raised garden bed using corrugated steel roofing for the sides. I use redwood 2x4s for the frame & cedar 1x6s for the top plate.

I've always admired the look of those raised beds. Great job!
Glad you like them!
Wow the view in your backyard is spectacular! This is the same style of raised beds I'm planning on building. I saw one UA-camr who used the Japanese method of burning wood called Shou Sugi Ban. It seals the wood without the use of chemicals and the blackened wood next to the metal looks really sharp. Thanks for the vid and the tip on the poor man's pocket jig!
Thanks resourcefulgirl, I've used Shou Sugi Ban befor. I looks and works great. That would be a cheaper alternative to using redwood or cedar for sure.
I really like my raised beds, had them for a long time. I use Cinder blocks turned on their sides so any excess water can drown out as we have a lot of rain here. You can also sit or walk on them as well.
That's awesome. I have really liked mine too.
I built one of these this week and it turned out great. Thanks for the excellent video.
Russell, that's awesome. Nothing better than to hear you helped someone out. Thanks for the comment.
Pretty nice
I love the look of the metal on the raised beds
Thanks, I really like it too. Now I need a jig that will fill it up.
I just built 3 of these a week ago, I like your legs better on the corners than mine, but it’s to late to change now. I filled mine to about 10 inches from the top with old rotten wood, sticks and layers of cardboard. I used the same pocket hole jig to lol. Great design thanks for sharing.
Hey Todd, that's funny that you don't like your legs. If you watch my next video on raised beds, you will watch me cut this one in half because I changed my mind on how high I wanted it. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for your video. I just built one using yours as a reference. Went smoother having yours as a guide n
Wow Rob, I never thought I would hear that someone used one of my videos to make something. Really glad to hear it. Thanks.
I'm using yours as a reference, as well. Except I'd already gotten what I thought I would need and went with 4x4s for the corners so I'll be adjusting. I've never made anything with wood apart from simple shelves and I've never had need to use giant sheets of corrugated metal (but now know how easy it is to slice up your skin by just grazing it...) so I've been watching and re-watching videos on it. It's been helpful for a lot of tips and yours just happened to use the same measurements. Thanks for posting
I have almost the very same design, just used a slightly heavier galvanized roof panel. I filled with the Hugelculture method in layers of logs, limbs, wood mulch, old hay, horse manure and compost. Can't wait to see how well it works. Built 4 4'x8' beds 24" deep. $400 invested.
Great video 👍
PEACE BROTHERS AND SISTERS 🙏💙. STAY SAFE
Let me know how it works out.
I watch the Sawyers too! Their great peopleà. I love learning and I wouldn't worried about non mitered corners! It looks real good!🙏🏻❤🇺🇲⛵⚓
Thanks Melinda. The Sawyers are good people. I really like their channel.
@@TheWoodHaven So do I! I don't miss a video! He's my brother in arms. Him=USMC, Me=USN! They Love the Lord!!!🙏🏻🙏🏻❤❤🇺🇲🐐⛵⚓🐓
Wow...look at those hills mountains in the background. Nice shot ! 14:12
Yeah, I'm pretty lucky to have that view.
The original build had no bottom frame and had the corrugations oriented vertically. I’m guessing that orientation helps the siding / roofing bear the weight of the soil unsupported. Useful video!
Andrew, you are right. If the metal siding you have access to is like mine, you should support it better...IMO of course.
The wood and steel look very nice together,
Hi Vivian. I was surprised how much I liked it. I was just trying to save a little money :/
Looks just like ours! Nice job!
Gardening with a view is the best!
I just watched your build. They are almost identical, except I think you did a better job.
Love sawyer Ridge farms great video my friend God Bless you 🙏
Hey Bake a Leg, yeah the Sawyers totally inspired me to get a garden going last year. I met them at the meetup last year. They are as genuine as they seem on UA-cam. Maybe more.
FYI, Built 4 of these half height versions. Glad you introduced the 1/2 height version as I probably would have gone a different way. Very pleased with your design. Thanks Daryl.
That's awesome Gary. I hope you get good use out of them. I have loved mine.
Am subscribing just in the hope to see more of that amazing view to compliment the solid job done on the raised bed.
Hey C S, thanks. I hope you're not disappointed.
Nice snow capped hills. Wild guess of Tejon Pass area?? You seem like a calm craftsman with some framing experience. Nice job!
Hey Karl, not in Tejon Pass area. I'm in Utah along the Wasatch Front. Glad you liked the video.
You did a great job with this!!! Nice to meet you this weekend!!!
Thanks, this is the video that got me monetized. Got this idea from Sawyer Ridge Farm.
Oh wow love the mountains in the background. Gorgeous! Wendy🐞🐝❤️
I can't complain about the views here.
@@TheWoodHaven just gorgeous! Mountains sure make for some amazing natural landscape. And it’s free. 😀
@@hardnackfarms1736 Yes they do. Hey, nice score on those trash barrels you found on the road.
@@TheWoodHaven one had a broke handle and the other a split but to a farmer this is perfect. Thank you I watch another channel and he gets so many roadside treasures I was tickled to find one. Keeps these out of the landfill. I am thankful
@@hardnackfarms1736 so what you're saying is one had a good handle and the other only had one split. Sounds good to me.
Wow! What a fabulous view!! It is so Gorgeous, it almost looks like a stage set. Wow.
As you casually pan around - - - Oh yeah, I just happen to have the best view in the country.
. . . nice raise beds too.
Forget about DIY builds - just point the camera at the mountains when the snow begins to fall - 3 hours should be about right - with Christmas music playing softly in the background. You'll get about a million views this Christmas - more if we're still in a lockdown.
You know what - I'm subbing to you just so that I can see more of your view. Thumbs up too.
Mystic Meadows, I have those same thoughts A LOT. It really is gorgeous here.
@@mysticmeadowshomestead6209 I wish it were that easy :/
Looks like Utah.
Great ideas! Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure Timbo Tim. Glad you liked it.
This is great, and that view!! I see why you want to put the garden over there.
I sure can't complain about the view.
Drills a beast!! Great vid
Hey thanks Jay D. I appreciate it.
I love raised beds to me it’s the best way to grow food. I like how you made yours. In our area we can’t find the materials to do more raised beds and if we find any of the materials the cost has went up significantly. Thank you for sharing your build. It was nice to meet you in Oklahoma. Are you attending the next one? Have an awesome weekend. Wendy❤️🐝🐞
Hi Wendy, that build was copied from Sawyer Ridge Farm. It was a fun build and did fantastic last season.
Right now I'm planning on being at the next meetup, but haven't gotten a hotel yet. I tried booking the Pryor on the first day but it was already sold out. Then I tried to get on a waiting list for the Pryor Motel, but have not heard back. Still trying.
@@TheWoodHaven I am going to try and make that meet up again! You might check for an AirBNB there is an app I used it and you can find great places to stay and less expensive. And if you can’t find one in Pryor then possibly a close town? I hope I can go but when I got home from the last meet up we were hit with an historic epic ice storm we are still trying to clean up. So I might not get to attend. I was invited to a few more meet ups before I was invited again to this one. But glad I made some new friends. Is this SD? I love your view. We have family in South Dakota Wendy
@@hardnackfarms1736 No, this is in Utah.
@@TheWoodHaven oh okay. I thought you were in South Dakota. Silly me
Awesome n great explanation! I have some leftover metal roofings. Hopefully my husband start this project for me! 😇
Ari Mills, this would be a great time to start :)
You’re right! He said our roofing is very heavy metal n not sure how to cut them 😂
@@4meporky I ended up cutting mine with a small harbor freight grinder with a cutting wheel.
@@4meporky many people use tin snips. You can also buy a metal cutting blade for a circular saw.
That view is amazing!
Yea, it really is.
No idea where in the world it is but I’d love to have that backdrop in my backyard.
Your added support will serve you well. I'd suggest 2x6 for the top rail in the future. You can always double up what you've put down to help keep it from splitting and warping. Be sure to glue and screw to laminate the boards together.
Thanks for the tips. I might just make those mods next season.
I like this and think it would be cool to drop a liner in it for a fish pond as well.
Hadn't thought about that one. Now I need to rethink my whole strategy.
17000 this videos doing great Daryl
I wish I knew the formula.
Nice bed. Thanks. Seems reasonable to do compared to purchasing high priced , much smaller readymade beds. Really like the poor man jig.
Even cheaper when you cut it in half to make 2 beds :| -- watch next garden bed video.
Thanks for sharing! I just subscribed.
Thanks for subbing!
I love it! I have been wanting have a raised garden for years, hopefully I can get it done! Looks amazing, great job!
Thanks Christine, I really appreciate it. You can start a raised garden in any structure. Don't let building a raised bed be a roadblock. You can start in something as common as a large cardboard box by removing tape and folding all flaps inward.
I made some raised garden beds last summer. I just used old scrap lumber. I love the look of the metal with the raised beds and I should of used it on mine!! Great video Daryl!!
My guess is a lot of folks are going to be making a garden this year.
Pretty good prediction!
I always use a little outside rated glue on joints. It keeps them together better
That's a good idea.
Great job!
Thanks a lot Ken. I really appreciate it.
Drip on a timer and your golden! 👍
i will add that for sure.
That is a nice looking bed . I don’t have use for it but if I do I will how to build it.
If they don't start stocking the grocery stores, we are all gonna be making these :/
Nice work! Congrats! Liked and subscribed!
Hey thanks a lot pilooha. Welcome to the channel.
@@TheWoodHaven Your very welcome! Good luck!
Looks good Daryl.
Thanks Kevin.
Semper fi, brother.
Thanks Gunars
I do wish you had provided the measurements for the cap pieces and the inside support braces. And your cost for doing the project.
I forget to do that all the time. I mean to and then just forget. I'll add that to the description.
Thanks for reminding me.
I think I watched the same video you referred to from Sawyer Ridge Farms but am I mistaken, didn’t he only have a top frame and leave the bottom just metal?
Yeah, you are correct. I didn't follow their plan exactly, but since it inspired my design, I thought I should give them credit.
@@TheWoodHaven yes, I think everyone modifies to what materials they have. I appreciate you replying. I like your design. The thing that draws me to his is no wood on the bottom means it won’t rot but I worry about the stability.
@@Jonatone To be perfectly honest, I think mine (and his) would be just fine without the bottom rail. I mainly added it for looks. And since it was touching the ground, that's why I used redwood. I met them at a get together in OK a couple years ago. They are the most genuine people you could ever meet. I can't say enough at how impressed I was with them. Great people.
@@TheWoodHaven I was thinking that too after I watched the video again. Seems like good folk
Farfegnugen!!! Still laughing...hugelkultur.
I was close :/
@@TheWoodHaven
Made my morning!!
is it hard to put screws in the steel, like did you pre drill first?
No, I used self-tapping screws which makes all the difference.
You could have split the 1x6’s into 2 1x3’s and you would not have needed the extra bracing. Great job though.
How much did it cost to build?
Judah, when I built this a couple years ago, it cost me about $80 to build. I just priced it out today and it would cost $190 to build.
Now, I ended up cutting this one in half to make 2 beds that were only half as deep. which would cut the cost in half.
That video is here: ua-cam.com/video/xEEUJjs160o/v-deo.html
Do you have any concerns about lead content in the galvanized metal?
Not at all for a couple of reasons. One it is only on the sides, not the bottom. 2nd, Lead is part of the zinc coating and only leaches when zinc breaks down when it comes in contact with acids. Non acidic soil has no affect on it.
Wouldn't it be better to seal the corners?
Woudn't hurt, but it's unneccesary. The corners hold the soil in without issues. I've used these for 3 seasons now and they work great.
Will the sheets of steel not buckle
Hi Justin, not at all. The corrugation keeps them from budging. I can stand on them and there is no give.
where do you find the corrugated panels?
Hi Beverly, you can find these corrugated panels in the junk pile behind my shed. Or you get them at Lowes or Home Depot...you choice.
Is galvanized safe for veggie gardens?
Yea, it's perfectly safe. You can buy galvanized planter boxes.
If I want to make them 4'x5' how much materials would I need?
Hi Kimberly. You are going to build one of these the most efficiently using a derivative of 8, so 4x4, 2x6, 3x5. I actually ended up cutting this one in half getting 2 at 2'x8' by 18" deep. If you want it this deep (27") at 4'x5' you would need 4ea. 2"x4"x10', 2ea. 2"x4"x8, 2 sheets of corrugated panel and 4ea. 1"x6"x6' cedar fence boards. I recommend viewing these 2 videos for a better design and less material cost: ua-cam.com/video/9MrFIEBZV5Q/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/T5bk-4rfz1E/v-deo.html
Good Luck.
@@TheWoodHaven I appreciate it. I will take your recommendation and do a 4x4. I do like this style without the 4x4. I like the flat all around look. Now with the braces you added on the inside of the box (extra support) were those included in your list?
So for one box I am thinking based off your plans and dimensions for a 4'x4'x24" box:
6-2"x4"x 8' boards (4 for the frame 48" wide and long & 2 for the corners based off this video style @ 17" tall to equate 24" total.
2 - 8' sheets metal panel
2-1"x6"x10' (if possible) for top slat with 45º miter cut.
Thanks for the help and feedback it's very much appreciated.

Thank you Shriya
May I ask the budget for each bed?
Hi Val, I probably spent around $80 for this bed. But if you watch my next video, you will see that I ended up cutting it in half and making 2 beds out of it. That would make it $80 for 2 beds.
@@TheWoodHaven what a great Deal! Thank you Daryl!
Can't find the corrugated metal roofing in stock 😔
My lowes just sold out too. Not sure if you have a Home Depot. They seem to have plenty here in Utah.
@@TheWoodHaven actually found them at another lowes location the other day, but had already built them out of 2x6...
@ 13:45 “line-in, farphanoogle” filling . 😂. And 20 years of grass clippings?🤔. And people think I am weird for saving just several years of logs and sticks.
I have a bad habit of substituting words when I can't remember something :/
Hugelkultur can give fertile soil for 20-30 years. So hopefully it works well for you.
@@teller007 This is the first time I've tried it. I'm looking forward to seeing how it works.
What are the overall measurements
This one is 4'x8'x 28". If you watch the video called Build this raised bed for less than $40, it has a free set of plans for making a 4'x4'x14" or a 4'x8'x14" raised bed.
I am planning on a raised bed here in SE coastal Florida using aluminum corrugated hurricane panels that were donated. Might use treated lumber and put the frame on 1x1 concrete pavers. Due to a bad back I plan to make it higher maybe 30 inches. I dont have many tools so a quick change chuck for the drill looks like a next buy.
@@sidneywhite749 pretty much all impact drivers have those chucks now. Only problem is you have to use hex bits, but everyone has those too. I absolutely love mine. I think you will too. Good luck with your build.
What but is that on drill
I'm not sure which one you are referring to, but I used 1/8" drill bit for drilling and a T2 torx bit for the wood screws, and a Kreg square bit for attaching the corrugated metal.
Is that a special chuck in drill
@@sidneywhite749 OK, now I see what you're asking. The drill is an impact drill so It has a quick-release hex chuck and all the drill bits that I used here are impact-ready hex bits. I love this setup because it's so easy to change bits.
That mountain almost looks like Mt. Humphreys.
Don't know much about Mt. Humphreys. I think that mountain is called Sierra Bonita.
Can't see what you are buildings
It is a raised garden bed.for planting a garden.
@@TheWoodHaven yes I know, but your recording I can't see what your recording is about.
or you go down to the dollar store and buy a plastic kiddie pool fill it with dirt and WA-YA you are done!
MrKinser01, that's a great idea. You would need to drill some holes in it for drainage though, but I like it.
@@TheWoodHaven two inches up from the bottom so it drains but still retain some water.
