  • Is the New Kadampa Tradition a route to compassion and loving kindness or an authoritarian cult? Does involvement with NKT mask unresolved trauma? Jon and Michelle consider NKT’s claims to compassion in light of the harassment of former members.

Indeed the impression I got from my limited exploration of the NKT is first that they are setting up false dichotomies like as you say between knowledge and experience. Second that the speakers on the UA-cam videos don't have the serenity or enlightened speak of but actually seem quite anxious. Thirdly listening the Geshe la himself and he talks incoherent gobbledygook. Kind of like an old senile person who we pretend to understand and agree with last they get angry and start swinging their walking stick!

Hey. I am currently having a face-off with them because they have caused someone vulnerable to be at risk, and I challenged them by supporting this person, although he is terrified of challenging or leaving this. I have in the past been helpful towards preventing harmful behaviour from a cult in the past, following up on my parent's footsteps in a way. If you would like to share your experience sometime I'm very interested and supportive

These short videos are great both for me and my atrophied attention span!
That NKT video about knowledge vs experience is very interesting. In one sense you could say he is talking about studying vs experiencing something. E.g. 'reading about swimming' vs actually swimming. Obviously they are very different things. Or alternatively he is talking about conscious competence vs unconscious competence. E.g. being fluent in a language Vs struggling to get by.
But then he switches to talking about getting it in the heart vs the head. Suddenly the meaning of experience is nebulous and feeling-based. A knowing that's supposedly coming from deeper understanding in some undefined way- completely unmeasurable. And he literally says that the goal of the retreat is an emotional reaction. Then you'll see that what the lama says is true. It could just as easily be unquestioned beliefs instilled through repetition in a controlled environment. You can't know how great it is until you've already bought into it. To sum up: bullshit alert. (Please enlighten me if I'm missing something).

I don't think you're missing anything, David. I'm horrified by this pseudo-Buddhism - medieval Tibetan Bon magical ideas with a veneer of Buddhism.

Hi David, Spike here. Do check out Michelle's channel in a couple days. I'm helping her put together the testimony of a former member (due to go up very soon!) that absolutely echoes what you point out here.

The book eight steps to happiness is based on a poem thats been translated by kelsang gyatso by a langri tangpa ad 1054 1123 I have read it twice now 1st time about 5 years ago and very recently, why I hear you ask well the general practice classes are based on one of the books and the present 12 week session is this book . not sure it will make any best seller list on story line or poetic prowess but I thought its best to swat up a bit on the subject, what i know of your good self jon you would agree do your research on a subject if interested enough to invest your time and money in it, dont go blindly into buddha den and if the cooks name atisha stay well away as he's a miserable get, ask michelle :-) . ps they never read the poem at these classes :-) .

Lama Atisha's life and teachings are fantastic, as well those of his close disciples, the so called old kadampa Lamas. And some stories are very funny. Some teachings are out of context in this day and age, but some are wonderful. Langri Tangpa, Geshe Chekawa and others.

I'm very sorry you seem to have had a bad experience of the @UCDz-Wk0ykecFBgB7Pg31cVQ/modern Buddhism.... its not actually clear what experience you have had?
As far as i understand Kalsang is a title given to those who follow the kadampa tradition/Buddhist way of life, it also means 'good fortune'. I suppose finding a more peaceful/enlightened way of life would be very good fortune!
I just want to make it clear i am in no way religious or a Buddhist myself. I have been to meditation classes and talks on buddhism, these have left me feeling calmer/more relaxed and more aware of the suffering around me.
In my opinion, If you have ever experienced anxiety you would not think the guy in the video you mentioned was anxious at all... considering he is in a room full of people as well as being recorded, that's a lot of pressure!!
The phrases in your video all seem to be taken out of context... reading 1 paragraph of a book/taking 1 sentence from a video does not give you the full picture...

Hi Hayley. Apologies I've only just seen this comment. As part of a series of talks this video (hopefully) makes more sense but alone I can see how it's confusing. You can watch the other videos in this series which explain my experience or you can read my testimony on my website and view all the abuse I have received here www.newkadampatraditionreport.org.
