What helmet do you use? Let us know! 🚴♀
No helmet .
I have a aero road helmet and a regular road helmet!!!
Smith Jetstream TT. Just bought it for a 70.3 and full IM this fall. If I'm still a midpack athlete, I might sell it; it doesn't seem meaningful to have expensive equipment and gadgets unless you're competitive.
Thanks for the video, literally just bought a Met Manta Mips (the Black and Red, looks sweet too), so good to know the penalty isn't too significant. I wanted a helmet that would be good for training and races, and as I am doing Triathlon more for fun, comfort trumps absolute performance. Love the magnetic clip on it too. Like with the rest of my gear, I know that I am never going to win anything, so having super space age aero gear would make me feel a bit of a plum. The middle ground choices seem like where I should be spending my bucks.
Tri helmet with a visor when it rains to keep my glasses clean. Otherwise, an Oakley Aro5 road helmet
Thanks for this video. Never buying a full aero helmet after this. Comfort first!
I’ve been meaning to say for some time now that James as a GTN presenter is making me want to stick to this channel! (The others are also good but that you already knew :-) )
Awesome video guys. Good to see you cutting down on the tacky not so subtle product placement and focusing on content.
Good to know the difference. Thanks for doing this comparison.
When wearing the ful aTT helmet I noticed a large gap between the rear and the back. Also pointing down. The TT helmet works best when the helmet and the back are a continuous surface.
Great video Guys!!! Great tech info…. 👏🏻👏🏻😍 If only another cycling channel gave us this kinda info 🤔😂 also head/visor steaming up is another thing to consider 🤔
Hi Mark, thanks for the video, I just finished watching your new TV series "The Gentleman" and thought you played the character of the Duke very well. Indeed you are a man of many talents.
Wait, what.. was Mark in The Gentlemen?!
Thanks this was insightful! I wish you’d compare the normal road helmet as well. I’d guess there is also a similar (marginal) time gap..
Thank you GTN
A pity the MET Codatronca have only been mentioned but not included in the test.
It would be intrigueing to observe a test run with deliberate head movements to see how this impacts the aero performance of the helmet types.
I have two things to add. If I get too hot, I take off the visor and flip it up. The wind on my face works for all the cooling I needed when it’s hot enough. Second, my position is low enough that I can’t see through my sunglasses in a normal road helmet because the top frame blocks my view peering up. I would have to buy a pair of sunglasses without a top frame, or use my giro aero road helmet that also has a magnetic visor and I can see through. But in my tests that giro helmet is like 18 watts slower for me than the TT helmet, it must be really bad for my head. And it kind of makes you look like toad from Mario without any ear coverings.
I find it very difficult to ride aero bars, mainly through lack of confidence in my ability, and therefore ride mainly on the hoods with occasionally on the drops. Due to that body position will there be any benefits from changing my current road helmet to an aero one instead?
Lazer helmet with Aeroshell cover smmes like a good idea.
could you share the velodrome results?
You should have done an additional test with more realistic head movement added in. Look to the side, raise your head position, etc.
Pog uses the Met Trenta even though it is slower. It points to the Manta having poor airflow. The temperature comparison being similar to the TT helmet would back this up.
You guys should sell the met helmets in the GTN store!
Depends on speed and heat.
What speed were you going in?
never seen that version of the met drone. is it commercial?
Can you do it outside in the real world with moving head. So we can see how much that penalty is
Aero road Oakley
You guys going down to Ironman wales?
and this helmet fits perfect, there's still a little room to spare also
road light helmet, coz I can scratch my scalp when itchy
"Which Is Faster?" "It depends" lol
Two pieces of equipment, you need a bike for a bike leg :p
So there’s no point in a full aero helmet if you’re only racing a sprint or Olympic distance?
The faster you go, the greater the marginal gains from an aero helmet. So it's still worthwhile in an Olympic or Sprint, as long as it's legal (not a drafting event).
@@JimCullen Wait, a TT helmet is illegal on a drafting event? Might be the killer argument for going for the aero road helmet if you only choose one.
@@Alex-kr7zr correct. TT helmets cannot be used in drafting events. I believe it's a safety thing: they catch wind more, and they're a big pointy thing that might not go well in a crash.
That said, if you're only doing triathlons, it's _very_ unlikely you'll be doing anything draft legal. I recently looked into the options and at least near me, the only way to do a draft legal triathlon is to have a professional licence, and _then_ apply for a draft-legal licence on top of that. So as far as most of us are concerned, triathlon == non-drafting.
@@JimCullen Good to know, so that's not a consideration then. Well, maybe if you want to do group rides, might be silly to do group rides with a TT helmet.
If you've already lost your mind, do you still need a helmet!
No. Just tape a visor to your face.
Yes, because an aero helmet is faster than going bare-headed.
One piece of equipment you also need... a bike
$200 for 3 minutes gain. Sounds reasonable
S Fight 👍 £15.
God damn. You've ruined my day. I thought I would save tons of time wearing a full aero helmet but now it seems I just wasted my monies 😃
Nah. Money spent on looking cool is never wasted.😀
Well, the aero road helmet might at least cost as much as the TT helmet. And the TT helmet arguably looks badass.
We have to admit, helmets are actually getting uglier and uglier and uglier! I wonder why!
